From the Committee

The 5th International Student Seminar (5thISS) is the scientific seminar OF the students,

BY the students and FOR the students. This seminar is planned and held by the

graduate students themselves in the Graduate School of Biostudies and the Institute

for Virus Research, Kyoto University, Japan.

The concept of it is "the active exchange of the young scientists’ research across

borders and between fields”. Nowadays the studies in life science have progressed

rapidly, whereas split into various small fields. But for the future progress in life science

it should be important to know the results and the methods in all fields in life science

and to co-operate one field with different fields. So we have planed the seminar, in

which graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in the various fields of life science in

the world present and discuss their studies actively and know the latest studies in life

science. We hope that young scientists discuss the future of life science and establish

friendships through this seminar, and people who form friendships in the seminar will

become core members of top scientists to lead life science studies.

Judges 1: Affiliation

2: Research Fields (Themes / Interests)

3: Comments

Dr. Akinori Noma / Professor / 野間 昭典 教授

1: Department of Physiology and Biophysics, Graduate School of Medicine, Kyoto University

2: Cardiac Physiology

3: The individual cellular function is composed of a large variety of molecular interactions. To

understand the complex mechanisms underlying these cellular functions, we need to integrate

molecular function into a cell model in a quantitative manner. The approach of Systems Biology

is one of the promising methods for integration. Indeed in the field of cardiac physiology, the

homeostatic mechanisms underlying the cardiac myocyte contracting activity are now explained

by integrating ion channels, ion transporters, cardiac membrane excitation, contraction and

energy metabolism into a comprehensive cell model.

Mr. Douglas Sipp / Manager

1: RIKEN Center for Developmental Biology

2: Science communications

3: I am very much looking forward to learning from this year’s group of international student

delegates. Last year’s event was excellent and I anticipate even more energy and enthusiasm

in the presentations this year. Relax, enjoy, and show your excitement!

Dr. Fumio Matsuzaki / Group Director / 松崎 文雄 グループディレクター

1: Laboratory of Cell Asymmetry, RIKEN Center for Developmental Biology

2: Neural development, Neural Stem Cell, Cell Polarity

3: You may not need to speak English to do original work. Once you have done it, then you will

definitely need to speak English, and will get better chances to do more original work.

Dr. Ikue Mori / Professor / 森 郁恵 教授

1: Laboratory of Molecular Neurobiology, Institute for Advanced Research, Division of Biological

Science, Graduate School of Science, CREST, JST, Nagoya University

2: Molecular Genetics, Behavioral Genetics, Neuroscience

3: Research fields in Bioscience are diverse and sophisticated nowadays. Scientists in

Bioscience for the next decades must be equipped with expertise in multiple disciplines to meet

the various scientific needs in the society. Challenging the function of brain for example requires

the broad knowledge ranging from experimental psychology to behavioral genetics and also the

appreciation to experimental skills such as electrophysiology and computational biology. I would

like graduate students to grasp the current scientific world, let alone to be eager to learn, to be

thoughtful and to be creative.

Dr. Ikuko Nishimura / Professor / 西村 いくこ 教授

1: Department of Botany, Graduate School of Science, Kyoto University

2: Plant Molecular Biology

3: Where there is life, there is science.

Dr. Kazuhiko Igarashi / Professor / 五十嵐 和彦 教授

1: Department of Biochemistry, Tohoku University School of Medicine

2: Regulation of gene expression and chromatin

3: Doing science can be a life-long adventure with so many funs and excitements. You can

explore what you like with taxpayers’ money. The corollary is that you have to work productively

to make discoveries and to communicate well. Please enjoy your own quiet progress.

Dr. Makoto Noda / Professor / 野田 亮 教授

1: Department of Molecular Oncology, Graduate School of Medicine, Kyoto University

2: Molecular Oncology

3: Our group is interested in the molecular mechanisms of cancer progression and now

focusing on a molecule (named RECK) that regulates extra-cellular matrix remodeling. The

techniques we use include cDNA expression cloning in mammalian cells, cell migration assay

using time-lapse microscopy, retroviral and adenoviral gene transfer, and conditional gene

targeting in mice. In this international seminar, I look forward to learning your efforts, findings,

and excitement.

Dr. Michiyuki Matsuda / Professor / 松田 道行 教授

1: Department of Pathology and Biology and Diseases, Graduate School of Medicine, Kyoto

University

2: Signal transduction, Oncogene, FRET imaging

3: Many feats in science have been achieved by serendipity. For me, daily research is to

maximize the chances to hit upon such unexpected findings. If my research progresses as I

write in grant applications, it must be horribly boring. I am looking forward to this meeting

because young scientists are bold enough to present “something terribly weird”, which makes

me exciting. Hope you also enjoy searching for the hidden clue to the secret of life.

Dr. Shunichi Takeda / Professor / 武田 俊一 教授

1: Department of Radiation Genetics, Graduate School of Medicine, Kyoto University

2: Molecular Biology、Cellular Biology

3: Compare to my days as a graduate student, nearly twenty years ago, I am amazed by the

high standards and the progress of research in current biological sciences. I hope you will all

take advantage of the wide range of fields of study that are available to broaden your horizon

sufficiently for a successful future career.

barriers, and go ahead to your own research goal.

Dr. Yasushi Kawaguchi / Assistant Professor / 川口 寧 助教授

1: Division of Viral Infection, Department of Infetious Disease Control, Research Center for

Infetious Diseases, The Institute of Medical Science, The University of Tokyo

2: Virology

3: It my great pleasure to join 5th ISS in Kyoto University as a judge for presentations of young

scientists. Hopefully we will have fruitful discussions in the seminar and these will provide

insights into future researches for you guys !!

Dr. Yoshinori Watanabe / Professor / 渡辺 嘉典 教授

1: Laboratory of Chromosome Dynamics, Institute of Molecular and Cellular Biosciences, The

University of Tokyo

2: Chromosome segregation

3: It will be great to exchange scientific and non-scientific information between young

researchers face-to-face across countries. That will enormously encourage young people to

engage in scientific study and to play an important role in this community in future. I am looking

forward to hearing your enthusiastic presentation and discussion in Kyoto soon.

Group Seminar

Date: 2nd March (9:00~)

Place

NeoII (Building G in Faculty of Medicine campus) *Please refer the access map.

Style

The aims of the Group Seminar are to discuss the works across borders, to understand the

works in different fields and to shear the scientific experience. Each group will consist of 2

invited guests and 3-5 young Japanese scientists from various research fields. Each member of

the group will present their studies using mainly the posters which are used in the poster

presentation. Other supplementary materials such as PC and pictures also can be used. Times

of presentations are as follow.

Those who present a study in both oral and poster session: ~7 minutes (talk)

Those who present a study in the poster session only: ~12 minutes (talk)

Question-and-answer can be exchanged anytime during presentation. Chairpersons of these

seminars are the members of the 5thISS executive committee.

In this seminar, we hope to talk the future of life science and to form good friendships between

fields for us and for the future of life science.
