The Advantage e-Newsletter
It’s the last hurrah for summer! Sorry kids, it is almost time to go back to school… That means that there are a lot of events taking place this month, so check out our calendar for this month or to see a full listing of events/activities check out our website at merrillchamber.org Ever wonder how all these events/activities take place? Mostly volun-teer groups & business sponsors. It’s not groups out to make money, it’s organizations that put the profits right back into the community! City Band Concerts—volunteers! Gazebo Nights—volunteers! Firefighter Charities Softball—volunteers! Relay for Life—volunteers! Fill the Gazebo—volunteers! Crazy Daze—businesses & vol-unteers! LC Fair—you guessed it, volun-teers! Movie in the Park—businesses! Merrill Community Night Out—businesses & volunteers! Merrill Lion’s Labor Day Car Show—volunteers! Gleason Mud Bogs—volunteers! Tractor Pull—business & volunteers! Pork in the Park—Business & you guessed it—volunteers! Rodeo—volunteers & business spon-sors! And lets not forget all the food stands at these events that you enjoy...you guessed it right again—volunteers! Where oh where would we be with-out volunteers? Most organizations have boards & committees. Who serves on these? Of course the an-swer is volunteers! I sense a theme here…! Merrill is a community full of non-profits & service organizations. And who makes up these organizations? You & me! We are all volunteers! I sit on many boards representing the Chamber and/or Merrill. Some are more pleasurable than others, but they all play an important role. Representing Merrill is important on many fronts—it puts Merrill on the radar & allows the opportunity to talk
positively about all our attributes & talk frankly about issues & what we are doing to fix problems. And some-times, Merrill just needs a ‘mouth-piece’ & who better to do that than Merrill’s biggest cheerleaders—the chamber staff! It’s always great to greet visitors, people that are lost, giving tours to new employees & just talk about everything Merrill. It’s funny that even when they are turned around or lost, they always seem to find the chamber. I guess those blue signs were a good investment after all! And if you are on-line and/or google chamber, guess who pops up? That’s right Merrill Chamber of Commerce.
We get a lot of calls from all over asking questions about other areas of the state…& we have found out that when they are on line searching, we are the one that pops up!
That says a lot about our search engines & our wide reach with marketing! So we are happy to
give them the correct number to the CVB or chamber that they are look-ing for. Even outside of office hours, your chamber staff is called at home & stopped on the street because we will know the answer to the ques-tion! It is nice to know that we are seen by many as the ‘ambassadors’ of the community & people trust & value our opinions & information. As you can see, many of the activi-ties/events scheduled for this month are put on by volunteers. The big-gest of those is the Lincoln County Fair! The fair this year is August 15-19 & we are told that it will be in August again next year too. Thousand attend the fair each year & many will complain. But remember this big event is all done by volun-teers. Volunteers are people, we are not perfect & unfortunately events like this will have its fair share of nay-sayers & complainers. Some com-plaints may have merit, but for most fair attendees they will have an en-joyable experience, especially the kids & isn’t that what the fair is truly about? Kid having fun, raising & showing animals & taking part in 4-H

programs? I’m glad that we still have a fair. And the Merrill Festival Grounds is looking great with new building, repairs & new bathrooms! We are looking forward to having Pork in the Park there this September & there will also be a big gun show at the Expo that same weekend. So we are looking for Volunteers...we need rib cooks, so contact us! Friends of the River Bend Trail are planning a big day this month too. Aug. 25 there will be a big Chalkfest around the courthouse and a Bike the River event with two different, family friendly routes to choose from & the day will end with a Pigout at the Pavilion pig roast! Just last weekend, Merrill had it’s 4th Annual Lobsterfest, raising mon-ey for the Safe Ride Home Program. Ballyhoos served up 400 lobster dinners—cooked, served & cracked at you table, by you guessed it...volunteers! It was also Merrill’s first triathlon—Black Squirrel Scurry! Nearly 50 people took part in this canoeing, biking & running event—once again organized by volunteers & topped off with a family friendly walk/run called the Lobster Crawl just before Lobsterfest. No where else but a small commu-nity like Merrill can you find so much to do, all giving back to the community, by so many volunteers! And summer wouldn’t be summer without all the programs at TB Scott library for every age group! There was reading, music, shows, movies, picnics, arts & crafts & so much more. Thanks to their group of volunteers also known as “friends”. If you haven’t experienced any of these events yet, there is still time with so many end of summer & fall adventures yet to come! From my doorway to yours, experi-ence the events & thank a volun-teer! Debbe Chief Executive Officer

Bricks make great gifts for any occasion! There are 4 sizes of bricks to choose from & each brick can be engraved with names, dates or special messag-es. The bricks make wonderful gifts for birthdays, anniversaries, holiday gifts or simply to honor some-one in a permanent way. All profits from the brick purchases are earmarked for future improvements to Normal Park. So purchasing a brick for the walkway is just the beginning, you will also be supporting ongoing improvements now & into the future. The bricks have not only paid for the memorial walk-way, but also the garden surrounding the gazebo. New this year are the bathrooms, concession stand/kitchen, warming house building & curbing around the gazebo thanks to our partners City of Merrill & the Merrill City Band. Also scheduled for this year, the three of us will be installing a paved parking area for handicapped park-ing. A new partner in our Normal Park venture is the Mer-rill Optimist Club. After the accessible playground is installed next summer, we will decide where the new pathways should be installed followed by historic lighting.

Let’s look at the top 10 reasons this year. Here are the top 9 & 10: 9. Promotion and publicity. With a chamber membership, you can reach potential clients through member exclusive advertising and opportunities for business-to-business adver-tising and publicity. 10. Access to members-only discounts and services. These differ from chamber to cham-ber. For example, the Merrill Area Chamber of Commerce has a Member-to-Member dis-count program where a chamber member will receive discounts on their purchases from many other chamber members businesses Did you know... The more a firm is networked with its community, the quicker and easier it is to establish a trust bond with customers. If a firm is to gain maximum value from membership, it must be an active participant in chamber-sponsored events. Chambers plan events so that its members benefit. Only by participation, can a firm get maximum benefit.

ceives over 6000 hits per month.

Albert Einstein once said “Only a life lived for others is a life worth-while.” When I reflect on why being a mem-ber of the Mer-rill Chamber of Commerce Board of Direc-
tors is important to me it really comes down to doing what I can to help others. Being a business owner in Merrill it is important to me to see our community grow and prosper and offer amazing things to the people who come to visit our wonder-ful city. But beyond that there is a sense of obliga-tion to give back to others and help foster the com-munity that has given so much to myself. Working with Boy Scouts and being in charge of the Haunted Sawmill every year has given me a unique perspective on how this city needs new and exciting things to draw people in. I have had the opportuni-ty to interact with people in our community who are thrilled to see Merrill doing things to attract visitors and guests to our city. I have spoken to guests who have come from as far away as Chicago and the Twin Cities just to go to the Haunted Sawmill in Octo-ber. We have consistently had over 7000 guests come to each annual show. I have also had the opportunity to work closely with other business owners who help to sponsor our incredible Autumn tradition. The overwhelming positive reaction that we have received makes me feel incredibly proud that we are doing something great to not only help Boy Scouts and the youth of this community, but to help our local business owners by bringing in guests who frequent their businesses and help draw atten-tion to Merrill through print and media advertis-ing. Knowing that you have done something that means so much to others in an incredible feeling to have. I feel the same way about working the Chamber of Commerce. Through the events that they sponsor and the Board’s goodwill and outreach we are also helping to grow Merrill, put it on the map and make it a place that we can all be incredibly proud of. By working with the Board I have another opportunity to help showcase all of the incredible things that Merrill has to offer, from our downtown shop own-ers who use their talents and generosity to make people visitors to our community feel warm and invited , to our annual events, our scenic natural beauty, all the way to our larger businesses that help provide the jobs that make this community strong. Helping promote what we have to offer makes me feel like I am doing something worthwhile to be of service to others.
