Dear friends,

The end of the year is approaching rapidly. It has been an important year for NileDutch, marked by the delivery of the MV NileDutch Breda, the first of our four newbuild vessels. The Breda is currently operating on the East Coast South America to West Africa (ECSA) rotation. Her first port calls were marked by receptions and parties. The other three new vessels will enter service in 2015.

Another great development is that the NileDutch Portugal office recently received the award for the best Portugal-Africa shipping line, for the second year running. It has been a busy year in many respects and our cargo volumes are still growing. That is the result of the hard work of all NileDutchers, all over the world, and our customers who trust us – I would like to thank them all for that.

In this issue of The Africa Connection you will find many articles about people, both customers and NileDutchers. After all, it is the people who make our company. The NileDutch Story introduces some of our people who have moved long distances, often to a different continent, for work. Their international perspectives and language skills help us provide a better service to our customers.

The Person in the Picture in this issue is Emmanuel Lanne, Commercial & Trade Manager, North East Asia, based in Hong Kong. Peggy Wong-Lim of Aquamaritime Logistics gives us a perspective on the developments in Malaysia. In Feet on the Street, Romain Massoulle of NileDutch France tells us more about the French market and its connections to Africa.

As part of our corporate social responsibility efforts we recently shipped a container of computers to Kinshasa for Close the Gap. This non-profit organisation aims to bridge the digital divide by providing computers donated by organisations and businesses in the West to projects in developing and emerging countries. You can read more about this on page 8.

I would like to thank our customers, partners and staff for their contributions and hard work in 2014. I would also like to wish you all the best for 2015 and a happy holiday season. We all look forward to working with you again in 2015.

05NileDutch STORY

Yuxienne Wang is a sales executive at NileDutch’s office in Pointe Noire, Republic of Congo. Her role is mostly focussed on new customers.

“After doing a marketing and commercial studies course in France, I worked in the luxury cosmetics business. Eventually I decided it was time for a change and to discover a new continent, so in 2009 my husband, son and I moved to Brazzaville, the capital of the Republic of Congo.

In September 2012 I joined NileDutch at Pointe Noire. The reliability and quality of service the company offers really appeal to me. I also like the fact that we are operating in a niche market and are a dynamic company which is really in tune with the African market. I think Africa has a great future. We also want to develop our export operations. That mostly involves shipments of timber and minerals for Chinese companies.

The team at Pointe Noire is great. Everyone is friendly, dynamic, professional and responsive at the same time. Every day is different; we have to deal with lots of different situations. It’s completely different from my old job in Paris! However, I miss going shopping as there are no shopping centers like in Europe, and there are no cinemas.

I like the hospitality and warmth of the people here. The tropical climate is also great and I enjoy the sunshine and the beaches at Pointe Indienne where we go at the weekend to enjoy nature and the local cuisine. I also like to get involved in events such as the NileDutch parade on Independence Day, 15 August.”

This diversity brings new ideas and energy to our company and helps us

provide a better service to our customers. For example, Chinese customers

can deal in their own language with two of these NileDutchers in West Africa.

Jean-Francois Laubel is Managing Director of the China & Asia Trade at our Shanghai office. He is involved in most aspects of the business: trade, commercial negotiations and agency management.

“My background is highly international, I’ve lived and worked in Algeria, the Caribbean, Pakistan, India, France, Russia and Malaysia. My wife is also French, but we met in Moscow, and we have a 15-year old son. I joined NileDutch two years ago. The Shanghai office is the headquarters for China and I travel all over the country for meetings with customers and other NileDutch teams. We moved here as a family and our son really likes living in China and loves the energy of Shanghai.

As Managing Director I work with the team leaders in all areas of our business. Basically, I aim to monitor the activities and help maintain a good working environment and team spirit. Working in Shanghai, in China, is different from my past experience in South East Asia, which brings new challenges and a new cultural and management approach. China is huge and from North, to East, to South China, you have different dialects, although Mandarin is the common language. Each province has a different culture, way of working and attitude - really interesting.

I’m taking Mandarin lessons but I still have a lot to learn so at the moment our social life is focussed on the expat community, from all over the world. I’m also a member of the French Chamber of Commerce. There’s nothing I miss here, we can even get real French baguettes. Shanghai is also a perfect base from which to explore Japan, Taiwan, South Korea and other countries.”

Helen Sun (Sun Tingting) is Commercial Supervisor at the NileDutch office in Luanda, Angola. She is responsible for incoming FEWA (Far East – West Africa) traffic and is the first point of contact for our Chinese customers.

“I moved to Angola from China in 2008 because I was looking for a change in my life and a new challenge. My father, brother and sister also live in Angola, but in a different region. My first job here was with a Chinese construction and trading company. After that I joined an international inspection and testing business where I gained a lot of experience. One of my friends introduced me to NileDutch and told me what a professional company it was. I joined in May 2012 and really enjoy working in the committed and enthusiastic team.

We are now using the Soportos container terminal which has helped us increase the volume in-line with the market demand and we are now number one in containerised cargo here. I also follow up sales leads and approach prospective customers. It’s great working in such a nice team. Working at NileDutch has also helped me develop my skills and become more self-confident.

The weather here in Luanda is nicer than in the area where I’m originally from as the summers are much cooler. I share an apartment close to the sea with a friend. On a good day it only takes me 20 minutes to drive to work. I enjoy living and working here, and the Angolan people are nice. But I do miss Chinese food!”

Close the Gap is an international non-profit organisation which aims to bridge the digital divide by offering high-quality, pre-owned computers donated by businesses and public organisations to educational, medical, entrepreneurial and social projects in developing and emerging countries. The organisation recently celebrated its tenth anniversary, and the celebrations were attended by its patron, Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

NileDutch recently sponsored Close the Gap by shipping a container with computers from Antwerp to Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. We also took care of the handling in port and the road transport to the final destination.

NileDutch wins Portugal-Africa shipping awardAt the recent Transportes & Negócios transport awards event in Porto, Portugal, NileDutch again received the award as best shipping line on the routes between Portugal and Africa. There are many specialised players on this market, especially on the Portugal-Angola route. Hence winning this award in both 2013 and 2014 is a real achievement by our team in Portugal. It is testimony to their excellent teamwork.

Our weekly West Europe - West Africa (WEWA) service calls on Lisbon and Leixoes in Portugal. NileDutch has five offices in Angola, which is an important market for Portuguese exporters. The WEWA service is complemented by our feeder service in West Africa.

11The NileDutch NEW BUILDS

The MV NileDutch Breda called at Luanda at 2 October. To celebrate this milestone, and the fact that NileDutch has been serving the Angolan market for over 30 years, the company held a party for its customers and other valued associates.

Page 12: The Africa Connection 05

Exploring Hong Kong withEmmanuel Lanne

NileDutch carries huge volumes of

cargo between China and Africa.

To serve this important market

efficiently, NileDutch has six

offices in China. Emmanuel Lanne,

Commercial & Trade Manager, North

East Asia, told us more about life

and doing business in Hong Kong.

12

Page 13: The Africa Connection 05

“I’m 32 and I grew up in Lyon, France, where I studied at Lyon Business School and obtained an MSc in Management. My father is French and my mother is originally Japanese. After graduating I went straight into the shipping industry, mostly in sales and marketing roles. I joined NileDutch in Hong Kong in September 2013 and now handle the trade and commercial management of the FEWA (Far East – West Africa) and SWAX (South West Africa Express) services. The Hong Kong office is fairly small, apart from me there are Dicky Lo, Operations Supervisor, and Pierre Chui, Customer Services Manager.

There is quite a large community in Hong Kong with Indian connections and they have extensive trading links with the businesses of similar communities in Africa, especially Nigeria, Ghana and East African countries as well as Congo, DRC, and Angola. Other customers in Hong Kong also supply these countries as well as Cameroon. In the past, much export cargo from mainland China went via Hong Kong. These days, businesses on the mainland often ship goods directly to or from Europe, the Americas, and other countries in Asia. However, a lot of commerce with Africa is still handled by traders in Hong Kong and we are expecting these volumes to grow. Many of these businesses rely on informal and personnel contacts. They are often thriving family businesses with five to ten people and many of them were set up in the 1990s.

At NileDutch Hong Kong we try to distinguish ourselves from the competition by being friendly and responsive. And our customers really appreciate that. Being a niche operator we have a strong position on routes to Congo, DRC, Angola, South Africa and Cameroon.

China is a huge country, and NileDutch has six offices here with over 80 staff in total. We have a presence in busy ports and trading cities: Tianjin (near Beijing), Qingdao in North China, Shanghai and Ningbo in Central China, and Guangzhou and Hong Kong in South China.

It still surprises me when Chinese people from different regions cannot understand each other in some circumstances. For instance, someone from Tianjin in North

China might be as lost as a Dutch or French person at a meeting where everyone else is from Shanghai in the east of China, and speaks Shanghainese!

I live in Sai Kung, a quiet village. It is lovely and surrounded by hills and water. In my spare time I go walking, running, kayaking and swimming. It takes me 45 minutes on my motorbike to get to downtown Hong Kong, which is really busy. Obviously there are times when I miss my family in France, but I do enjoy living here.”

Durban Container Terminal Pier 1

DCT Pier 1 forms part of Transnet

Port Terminals (TPT), a division of

Transnet SOC Limited. Transnet is

South Africa’s state-owned freight

transport company. TPT has 16

terminal operations in seven South

African Ports. In addition to four

container terminals there are also

terminals for handling cars, break

bulk, bulk and agribulk.

14

Page 15: The Africa Connection 05

DCT Pier 1 is dedicated to containers and accounts for almost one fifth of the volume handled by Durban Container Terminal. Pier 1 has two berths and can receive vessels with a draught up to 12.5 metres. The six ship-to-shore cranes are supported by a fleet of gantries and terminal tractors. The site has a storage yard of almost 20 hectares with a capacity of 720,000 TEU. Durban is located on the East coast of South Africa and DCT is therefore also a gateway to neighbouring countries like Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, Swaziland and Lesotho. The main shipping routes are to and from North and South America, Europe, Asia and the rest of Africa.

Terminal Manager Joe Madlala joined DCT over ten years ago. He is responsible for all operations at Pier 1, including financial performance, health and safety, customer relations and business development. He believes that his role is to enable others to excel in their jobs and he generally takes a hands-on approach to management. When asked what he liked most about his job Joe replied: “The challenges, meeting new people every day and making a difference within the entire global economy’s supply chain.”

He explained that the efficient operations at Pier 1 facilitate a quick vessel turnaround, short berth occupancy and cost effective-vessel calls. “We are centrally located relative to major landlocked countries and are therefore ideally placed to handle both incoming and outgoing cargo flows. This creates excellent growth opportunities, not only for shipping but also for industries such as manufacturing, mining and logistics.” The Durban region is also popular with tourists, because of the pleasant climate and the friendly welcome they receive.

Obviously South Africa’s economy has been affected by the global slump, but so far the impact has been limited. In fact, exports are still growing, albeit only modestly. When considering the continent as a whole, the economic growth in Nigeria is an important factor, with both positive and negative aspects.

“The NileDutchers we work with most are Stephen O’Hara, Nolan Naidoo and Kevin Govender of the Durban office. We have built up a really good working relationship with them and the rest of the NileDutch team. The cooperation is very good and we ensure that all decisions we take benefit both businesses so we can grow together.”

When asked how he experienced working with NileDutch, Joe commented: “They are absolutely marvellous. The level of communication, forward planning and sharing of challenges ahead of, and during, vessel operations is outstanding.

NileDutch people are passionate about their

company and it shows in everything that they do.

Their friendliness and dedication is what I notice most. They are very professional and handle issues with absolute integrity and understanding. They are aware of the challenges we face in this industry and are always willing to work around these challenges to ensure the best productivity. NileDutch’s Far East - West Africa service is likely to grow very quickly as this is such an important trade route.”

“NileDutch would be good mentors to explain how to build a productive service provider - client relationship. We of Pier 1 wish NileDutch all the best in growing the business, particularly in South Africa.”

Romain Massoulletells us about the French market

Our own office in France opened

last year and has a staff of ten. As

Line Manager, Romain Massoulle is

involved with many aspects of the

operation.

16

Page 17: The Africa Connection 05

NileDutch France was set up in July 2013 and took on the staff of Currie, the agency who used to represent us. The office now has a team of ten people. Romain joined us soon after this office was set up.

“I’ve worked in the shipping industry for over fifteen years now, and my work has always been linked to Africa,” says Romain. “My career actually started in Pointe Noire in West Africa and later I moved to Senegal, mainland China and Hong Kong. During this period I learned a lot about the routes between Africa, Asia and Europe, and cargo shipments in all directions. Five years ago I moved back to France and settled in Le Havre in the north-west, where NileDutch is also based.”

“My job is primarily commercial. But I also deal with a wide range of other subjects such as finance, expenses, human resources and other operational issues. The commercial side of my work involves lots of contact with customers to understand their needs and provide them with the best possible service.

Our main route is WEWA though we have increasing FEWA cross-bookings. Those cross-bookings have grown a lot, compared with last year. We have also significantly increased our market share on the route to Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, and the volume going to Pointe Noire, Congo, is stable. We ship a wide range of products to Africa: foodstuffs such as flour and malt, oilfield equipment, etc.

Le Havre is France’s largest container port (2.1 million TEU in 2013) and is served by all major shipping lines. The port authorities cooperate with those in Rouen and Paris to improve operations and customs procedures. The centre of the city, which was rebuilt in concrete after the Second World War, is a World Heritage Site.

“Obviously, we are largely focussed on French-speaking countries in Africa,” explains Romain. “Much cargo for West Africa is consolidated in Rouen, slightly further inland, and we have good connections to that port by barge. The inland waterways also link Le Havre to Gennevilliers, on the edge of Paris. The competition includes all the major shipping lines and some smaller players. It is always difficult to predict how the market will develop, but we expect the growth in our volume to continue.”

Bracongo keeps the drinks flowing with NileDutch

Bracongo (Brasseries du Congo)

in the Democratic Republic of the

Congo has worked with NileDutch

for over a decade. The company

trades in and produces beer, soft

drinks, wine and mineral water.

18

Page 19: The Africa Connection 05

Bracongo has a workforce of around 1,700 and is part of the Groupe Castel, one of Africa’s leading drinks companies operating at over 90 sites. The company imports a range of raw materials, such as malt, extracts and other ingredients. Hence the company receives a large number of containers every year. Gérard Filizas, Technical Manager: “The growing economy makes our turnover and our imports grow. NileDutch plays an important role in that respect. They’re always quick to react and any problems are invariably solved.”

“In my experience, NileDutch offers a quick and reliable service, and they are close to the customer. They understand our needs and adapt to meet them,” says Laurent Lescuyer, Bracongo’s Deputy General Manager. “Reliable deliveries mean we can implement lean stock management. I mostly work with Marie-Claude Jungers, Sales Manager at Comexas in Kinshasa, NileDutch’s agents in the DRC. She is always very focussed on our requirements and easy to work with. We look forward to continuing to work with NileDutch and receiving this level of service.”

Eddhies Ahozi, Transit and Logistics Manager, commented: “We think very highly of NileDutch. The contacts are very efficient and every request is dealt with appropriately. Sometimes the response covers more than the question.”

Earlier this year, Bracongo, Comexas and NileDutch worked together to provide the orphanage at Kimbondo, near Kinshasa, with a reefer container for use as a food store.

NileDutch offers a quick and reliable service, and they are close to the customer.

Malaysia has one of most vibrant economies of South East Asia and is one of the world’s biggest producers of computer disk drives, palm oil and rubber.

We interviewed Peggy Wong-Lim, Commercial Head of Aquamaritime Logistics who is based in Shah Alam, the state capital of Selangor, where Port Kelang is located. Aquamaritime Logistics is a liner, port agency and also provider of project logistics services. They have represented NileDutch since 2006.

“We are obviously in regular contact with NileDutch offices. I mostly deal with Chia Leng and Mark Lim about commercial and pricing matters and with Marinus van den Berg about backhaul matters. Chia and Mark are at the NileDutch Singapore office and Marinus is based in Rotterdam. We communicate by e-mail, Skype and WhatsApp, both during and after working hours, and that always goes well. In short, they are accessible people who add a personal touch to their work! We really appreciate their expertise and focus on West Africa.

Port Klang is Malaysia’s largest port. Aquamaritime handles commodities such as palm oil products and milk products and general cargo like toiletries, clothing, plastics, furniture and other products from Penang, Port Kelang and Pasir Gudang. We ship those to the ports in West Africa served by NileDutch. Backhaul cargo from West Africa to Malaysia includes sawn timber, rubber and cocoa.

Our office organises various staff events, such as birthday parties, a Chinese New Year dinner, the breaking of the fast in the month of Ramadan and an annual company trip, this year to Bangkok.

If you visit Malaysia then you should really go up the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur, the views are stunning, both by day and by night. You can also try the lovely street food from a range of cuisines. One of the great things about Malaysia is that it is so multicultural with a diversity of people, food, languages and architecture, so it’s like the whole of Asia in a nutshell. And finally you can enjoy summer all year long on our beaches, except when it rains during the monsoon season.”
