Delaware Union FAQ’s – Management

Why do Delaware Union and CDSA want to merge? • Share philosophical views on youth soccer placing an emphasis on developing the whole

person at every age and level of play • Pooling resources together for a greater opportunity to service our recreational programs

all the way through the highest levels of competition • Gain greater efficiencies while expanding the quality of service and opportunities to our

members How will the combined club be managed? • Members from the current Board of Directors of Delaware Union and CDSA have

combined to form the merged club’s Executive Board of Directors for the strategic oversight of the club, administration of programs, and coordination of resources

• Additionally, two Regional Operations Boards have been formed (North - Middletown area & Central - Kent County area) as well as a Smyrna/Clayton Affiliate Board to retain and manage local soccer programs in their geographic areas

Delaware Union FAQ’s – The Recreational Approach

My child plays on a recreational soccer team. What impact will the merger have on him/her? We do not anticipate a change in the existing recreational program due to the merger. Your recreational player will retain the advantages he/she currently enjoys. Your player will practice and play games where they have traditionally practiced and played games. Recreational teams will be formed by age and geographic location and will continue to have volunteer parent coaches. Teams will continue to practice one to two times per week plus play games on the weekend. U12 and above teams will play an inter-club schedule with other local REC clubs in fall 2014. The biggest change is that recreational coaches will have greater access to professional coaching resources, including more tools and training. The training will be based on the philosophy that it is more important for players to be placed in a situation to learn the game and have fun versus winning games.

U8 REC Practice Plans

In order to make practices run smoothly and be fun, it is important for us to have a basic understanding of the intellectual, emotional and physical developmental stage of the players we are coaching. Here are some typical characteristics of the Under 6 player. • Focused on themselves – reality to them is based on what they see and feel • Unable to see the world from another’s perspective • Everything is in the here and now • Cooling systems are less efficient - need frequent water breaks • Enjoy playing, not watching. Every player should have a ball in practice • Limited attention span - keep directions concise and to the point • Effort is performance – if they try hard, they are doing well • Active imaginations – utilize their imaginations in activities, they will love practice! • Look for adult approval – be encouraging when they say “Coach, look what I can do!” • Unable to think abstractly – spatial relationships are a mystery • Typically have 2 speeds -- extremely fast and stopped • Usually unaware of game scores – keep it that way
