THE ANCESTRY OF ''''''''''''''''' ''''''''''''''''''''''''''' KERR
AIM: to trace the KERR ancestry back through the paternal line as far as possible. This report is
the result of approximately 7 hours research.
Records searched
1. Since 1855 in Scotland it has been compulsory for all births, marriages and deaths to be
recorded. The birth, marriage and death certificates are held in the General Register Office for
Scotland (GROS) and are accessible via their Scotlandspeople service. It is possible to search
just the indexes to the records without viewing the full certificates.
2. Before 1855 registration of births or baptisms, marriages or marriage banns and deaths or
burials was the responsibility of the Church. The records of the Church of Scotland, known as
Old Parish Records (OPRs), and the Catholic Church Registers are also available through the
Scotlandspeople service. However, because registration was not compulsory these records are
not always complete – either because people chose not to inform or involve their local minister
or priest, sometimes the minister or priest chose not to record all the details and some records
no longer exist. The information that was recorded can vary from a lot of detail to just a basic
list of names.
3. Censuses have been taken every 10 years throughout the UK since the early 19th century but
only since 1841 have they included any useful information. That said, the 1841 census lists
only name, sex, age (rounded down to the nearest 5 for those over 20), occupation and where
the person was born, though that information is limited to whether they were born in the same
county if in Scotland or if they were Foreigners, English or Irish. Later censuses provide
increasingly more information. Census data is available through the Scotlandspeople service,
though only up to 1911 as census data is not made available publicly for 100 years.
4. In addition to the above records, information can be found in a variety of other locations. The
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has a large number of transcriptions of records from
around the world which are available through their Family History centres and Familysearch
web site. The Ancestry web site also has transcriptions of some Scottish census records.
As every direct male ancestor is called by the same name (David Kerr) I have added a number to
each one and have appended two charts at the end of the report to assist your understanding.

Introduction '''''''''''''' ''''''''''''''''''''''' Kerr was born on 1 November 1896 in Uphall, West Lothian (copy of
certificate supplied). This shows his father was David Kerr and his mother was Mary Kerr m.s.
Richardson and that his parents were married on 25 March 1892 in Uphall, West Lothian.

1. David Kerr (1) Using the information provided on George Richardson Kerr’s birth certificate to locate David’s
marriage certificate provides the following information (extracted):
25th March 1892, at Broxburn after Banns According to the forms of the Church of Scotland.
David Kerr, miner, single, age 25 of Broxburn, son of David Kerr, Pitheadman, and Margaret
Kerr, m.s Galloway (deceased).
Mary Richardson, single, age 24 of Broxburn, daughter of George Richardson, Miner,
(deceased) and Janet Richardson, m.s. Lawson.
Witnesses: John Veitch and Janet Richardson
Officiating Minister: Wm Johnston, Minister of the Parish of Uphall
Registered: 29 March 1892 at Broxburn.
Ref: ''''''''''''''''' ''''''''''' (Scotlandspeople)
From this and his death certificate (copy of certificate supplied) it is possible to estimate that David
Kerr(1) was born in approx. 1867. In fact he was born in 1866 in West Calder as is shown in his
birth certificate (extracted):
David Kerr, born 26 September 1866 at 32 Tweed Street, West Calder
Parents: David Kerr, Shale miner and Margaret Kerr m.s. Galloway
Married on 28 February 1865 in West Calder.
Reported by: David Kerr, father on 6 October 1866 at West Calder in the County of
Edinburgh.

The information about his parents confirms that given in his 1951 death certificate (copy certificate
supplied).

Their son Andrew appears in the 1901 census but not the 1911 so it is possible that he is one of
the children counted as no longer living in the 1911 census. This could be further investigated in
the future to be confirmed.

2. David Kerr (2)
David(1)’s birth certificate provides the information that his father is also called David and his
mother is Margaret Galloway and that they were married in 1865. Searching for a marriage record
of a David Kerr to Margaret Galloway produced no results. However there is a marriage listed for a
David Kerr to Catherine Galloway in 1865, the details of which are (extracted):
As further confirmation that this Catherine is the same as the Margaret listed elsewhere, searching
for other children provides the details for their first child, a daughter Margaret. Her birth certificate
states (extracted):
This certificate states that the date of the marriage of David Kerr and Margaret Galloway is January
rather than February, but as the birth was reported by the child’s grandmother this may have been
a simple mistake on her part.

As they were married in 1865 the first census they appear in as a family is 1871 living in Shotts,
Lanarkshire (extracted).
Then they appear in Slamanan, Stirlingshire in 1881(extracted).
The 1871 census lists a son named Andrew age 2 and the 1881 also lists a son named Andrew
age 2. A quick check using Familysearch and the Scotlandspeople indexes shows that there was
an Andrew Kerr born 4 Aug 1868 to David Kerr and Margaret Galloway, likely to be the one listed
in 1871. However there is a death listed in the index of an Andrew Kerr, in Shotts, age 5 in 1874
which is likely to be this child – though the certificates would need to be checked to confirm this.
There is a birth listed in the index of an Andrew Galloway Kerr in 1878 in Shotts, Lanarkshire which
is likely the Andrew listed in the 1881 census – though again the certificate would need to be

checked to confirm this.
By 1891 the family was in Uphall, Linlithgowshire (extracted).
As can be seen from the above 3 census records and the birthplaces of the children, the family
appears to have moved around quite a lot. This may have been as a result of David searching for
work, as he is listed initially as a farm servant & ploughman, then as a labourer before gaining work
in the mines.
David’s wife Margaret is listed in 1881 census but not in 1891 so she must have died after 1881
but before 1891. This is confirmed by her death certificate from 1885 (extracted).
The names of her parents are not exactly the same as those listed on her marriage certificate. Her
mother’s maiden name is listed on her marriage certificate as Johnstone and on her death
certificate as Sime but having checked on Ancestry, Familysearch and Scotlandspeople indexes
for other information relating to Andrew Galloway and his wife I believe Sime or Sim, as it is
occasionally listed, is correct. Johnston may simply have been recorded incorrectly by the registrar

3. David Kerr (3) David(2)’s marriage certificate provides the information that his father is another David and his
mother is Catherine Crawford. According to the Old Parish Records their marriage banns were
read in Kirknewton on 12 February 1837 (extracted)

were regularly proclaimed in order to marriage and no objections offered.

David is listed here as David Kerr Jun(ior) because his father is also listed on the same page of the
census (see extract on p. 15).

This should give us a date of between 1806 and 1811 for David(3)’s birth but I found it in 1804 in
Carnwath, Lanarkshire, which as we will see later (in 1851 census on p.16 ) is his mother’s
birthplace, and not in East Calder as it suggests in the 1841 census (extracted).

1844 but so far I have been unable to find a record of his birth or baptism.
The family next appear in the 1861 census, again in East Calder (extracted)

David, their son, does not appear with the family in 1861, but is not yet married. I searched the
Ancestry transcriptions for a David Kerr born between 1842 and 1846 and found 18 in Scotland.
Eliminating the ones not listed as being born in Edinburgh or Edinburghshire, and the ones listed
as sons of another couple leaves 4.
1) David Kerr, born c. 1844 in Lasswade, Edinburgh, a Law Clerk, living as a lodger with Elizabeth
Horn and her family in Govan, Glasgow.
(Ref: ''''''''''''''''' '''''''' ''''''' ''''''''''''''''''''''' ''''''''''''''''''''''' '''''''' (Ancestry transcription))
2) David Kerr, born c. 1843 in Kirkliston, Edinburghshire, a Servant (carter), living with Alexander
Wright and his family in Colinton, Midlothian.
(Ref: ''''''''''' '''''''' ''' ''''''''''''''''''''''''' '''''''''''''''''''''' '''''''' (Ancestry transcription))
3) David Kerr, born c. 1844 in Edinburghshire, an Agricultural Labourer, living with the Walker

family in North Mains Farm, Linlithgow, West Lothian.
(Ref: ''''''''''''' ''''''' '''' '''''''''''''''''''''''' '''''''''''''''''''' ''''''' (Ancestry transcription))
4) David Kerr, born c. 1844 in Currie, Edinburghshire, a Ploughman and Hay Carter, living with
Elizabeth Russell and her family on Dales Farm in Whitburn, West Lothian.
(Ref: ''''''''''' ''''''' ''' ''''''''''''''''''''''''''' ''''''''''''''''''''''' ''''''' (Ancestry transcription))
While it is not possible to say which is definitely correct, it is unlikely to be the first one given the
information we have about his birth and his later life as a farm servant and miner. We can
probably also eliminate numbers two and four because of the information about birthplace – from
later census returns we know “our” David was born in Kirknewton. That leaves number three as
the most likely, but it will need more research to see if there is any way to confirm this.
Then in the 1871 census (extracted)

It is not clear who is/are the parent(s) of David and James Kerr and Catherine Crawford. Based on
earlier censuses David Kerr and Catherine Crawford only have one son, David, who, in 1871 is
married to Margaret Galloway and living in Shotts (see extract on p.7) and their children David and
Catherine are listed as being with them on the night of the census and are different ages than the
ones listed above. It may be possible with further investigation to find out whose children they are.
Page 14 26/03/12
Neither David nor Catherine appear in the 1881 census so they both must have died after 1871 but
before 1881. Their death certificates confirm this (extracted)

4. David Kerr (4)
From the birth and death certificates of David(3) we see that his parents were David Kerr and
Helen Haddow. I can find no record of their marriage in either Kirknewton and East Calder or
Carnwath, or indeed anywhere in Scotland. I have, however, found information about the births of
5 other children besides David on Familysearch transcriptions. There will be copies of these in the
Old Parish Records on Scotlandspeople, but time did not allow for them to be located and viewed.

I found no record of David or Helen in the 1861 census which suggests they both died after 1851
but before 1861. I can find no record of Helen’s death, which suggests it may have been before
1855 and was not recorded in the parish records. I did however find David’s death recorded in
1855, which was a real bonus. When compulsory registration was introduced in 1855 a large
amount of information was recorded for each death. Unfortunately, much of it was dropped from
the form the following year. See below (extracted)

Suggestions for further areas of research
1) Extend the research on siblings. This would perhaps help answer some of the questions raised
during this research about some of the children in each generation.
2) At the time of his marriage in February 1767, David(5) is listed as living in Edinburgh, working
as a mason at Castle Barns there. Though in December of that same year his son, James’,
birth was registered in Kirknewton. It may be possible to find out more about him as a mason,
and why he was in Edinburgh at the time of his marriage, where and for whom he was working.
3) So far the research has been to trace the KERR line back, it could be expanded to cover the
female lines within the Kerr ancestry (i.e. Mary Richardson, Margaret Galloway, Catherine
Crawford, Helen Haddow, Catherine Thornton)
4) During our discussions you mentioned stories from your mother’s family and a possible link to
the Douglas family. This obviously would be another possible area of further research.
