The Anniversary of Flodden 2013
A vision for the future?
What I've been doing for the last 2 months
Meeting over 40 stakeholders as individuals and in groups from both sides of the border
Discussing their plans, ideas, hopes and dreams for Flodden
Preparing my report as a possible way forward Common ground on issues like tourism,
management, local projects, education, marketing and infrastructure
Introduction Thanks My background Great enthusiasm for the project The potential of Flodden Of National and International Importance Cross Border Collaboration is important A commemoration Regenerative tool for the region We can make of it what we want to
The Anniversary
2013
A programme to consist of an event to start, small independent events, then a large event to conclude
The ridings are already a spectacular annual event and should play a key role
Branxton and the battlefield have problems and advantages for the anniversary
Other projects/events for the year
Local Projects in the Long term
An annual event? Memorials? New ones for Scotland and
England. A joint venture? Raise awareness of Flodden and the Borders A series of little books and perhaps a children's
book The importance of the battle - conference? The battle is an important memory to keep alive
in times of increased nationalism
Infrastructure
The footpaths and interpretation should be improved around Flodden with better disabled access, audio tours, better pathways and interpretation
Flodden could be the start of a whole network of access routes linking all the heritage of the Borders
Each story would be independent but create a profound cultural experience
A map of local heritage?
Infrastructure A visitors centre can be a simpler, smaller project
than previously thought Its key role would be as a gateway Ecomuseums are not opposed to visitor centres Democratic: local people at the heart of the project
and given the necessary help Many aspects of them suit for Flodden
Education
Young people must be consulted on all aspects Flodden can be included at all stages of the
curriculum It can also be cross-curricular Need for a co-ordinated approach Educational activities and workshops can be offered
by many organisations Volunteering
Education
A co-ordinated touring exhibition could be bigger and more exciting than several independent ones
There could be greater geographical, archaeological and historical research
Could be a resource for education or involvement for young people
New website for both children and adults Children's section, blogs and downloadable
content
Marketing
The tourism in the area could improve drastically and not be noticed
Boost the regions economy Tie in the whole of the Borders with the
marketing Create a Flodden and Borders brand Programme to the anniversary
Marketing
A professional cross-border approach both regionally and nationally
The media is a useful tool to raise the profile and awareness of Flodden
Songs of Praise, BBC, documentarys, news Sponsorship and merchandising
Organisation
Several groups have offered funding, many can fund their own activities
Group together to apply for a single bid to HLF or to Europe
Fundraising Increased Cross Border Collaboration on this
and other issues would be a great result Expertise from both sides with contacts, skills
and advice to make all this a reality
Organisation A management group and several steering
groups Seems to fall into organisation, local projects,
education, marketing and infrastructure Anyone can sit on any steering group Core management group of experts, funders
and local community Project Development Officer key Facilitator and organiser O

Next Steps Flodden a great opportunity lets not let it go to
waste Management plan needs to be done by next
spring Need timetables, funding arrangements etc Infrastructure needs to be put in place so that
events can be planned Project Development officer must be applied for
soon If the stakeholders want their vision to reach its
full potential action must be taken swiftly
Thank you for listening Any questions?
