January 2016Welcome Doug & Eltress Dick

TP 402

It takes a lot to really wow me, and the Dicks have done it. Its a delight to have him and his charming wife, Eltress, join us.

Both come from New England. Doug, born in Wellesley, was there through high school. Then to Yale, an ancient history major. He did his honors thesis on Roman Dentistry! Yes, he wanted to be a dentist. Next Harvard School of Dental Medicine, one of a class of 14, graduating magna cum laude. The Army called him for two years to Ft. Mead, Md. After this, he returned to Harvard for his post doctorate in Orthodontics, and did research in embryology in the Anatomy Dept at the Medical School. With this fabulous education, he was ready for private practice which he did for 10 years in MA and in Charleston, S. C. from1983 until he retired in 2004.

Eltress, was born and raised in Melrose, MA, the eldest of 5. She went to junior college in Boston for 2 years and then met Doug on a blind date when they were both between freshman and sophomore years. This great date stuck and they were married three years later. She worked at Children’s Hospital in Boston and left when their son was born and later, a daughter. After that she devoted her life to her family and to many volunteer jobs with the Heart Association, Garden Club, Junior League, and PTA.

They rented in the winter for 7 years at Princeton Place at our nearby marina and enjoyed Sunday real estate visits. They knew what they wanted and the Tower was IT.

Doug confessed that he has returned to an early love for the trumpet which he played in college. He is practicing with a good mute in the apartment’s big walk-in closet!

They are proud grandparents of a boy and a girl who Doug is leading into learning to play instruments. -Merle Bauser

2Director’s Notes

In the month of January we will hold the annual meetings of both condominium associations. On Wednesday, January 20th, Arbor Trace will hold its Annual Meeting and elect two directors. Since there are six candidates for the two seats, ballots must be cast and tabulated at the annual meeting.

Tower Pointe will hold its annual meeting on Thursday, January 28th. After four years of service on the Tower Pointe Board, Earle Gates has decided not to seek another term. Bob Boyden, who has served for the past two years, has also decided not to seek another term. Please join me in thanking these two fine gentlemen for their dedicated service to the Tower Pointe community. Since we only had two candidates file to run for the two vacant board seats, there will be no need for a formal election. Therefore, Bennett Berman and Douglas Dick will join the board at the annual meeting and serve two year terms.

In other news, I am proud to announce that Nick Hoops has assumed the duties of Association Manager for Tower Pointe. Nick has been the Association Manager for Arbor Trace for the past year and will now manage both communities. Dale Carnes will now assume the duties of Director of Maintenance for both Tower Pointe and Arbor Trace. This dynamic duo is eager to serve you and together I am sure they will do a fine job managing the affairs of both condominium associations. I plan to step back from the day to day operation of the condominiums, but I am still very much involved in the budgeting and financial performance of both associations as well as being responsible for all staffing and services provided by Arbor Pointe Management. If for some reason Nick or Dale need guidance or are unsure of how to handle a particular situation, they will confer with me or if appropriate, the committee chair or board having jurisdiction. Otherwise, my philosophy is, let your managers manage. I have complete confidence in their abilities to do so.

In closing, I would like to update everyone as to the completion date for our Clubhouse lobby renovation. By the first week of January, all construction related activity will be complete. This includes painting and the wallpaper accent wall in front of the reception desk. We are still waiting on several pieces of furniture, which were custom pieces. Once these last few pieces arrive, we will set everything in place and hang the new artwork all in one day. I would anticipate this also happening by the first week of January. I appreciate everyone’s patience over the past few months and I hope everyone is pleased with the final result.

Yours truly,

Dan EdenfieldExecutive Director

The Arbor Trace Revue6Arbor Trace Travel

Group

We are breathing new life into a very popular group that was once active here: TRAVEL!

If you are like many of us, you still have the wanderlust but would enjoy a trip more if you went with Arbor Trace friends.

We will have our first meeting at 10:30 am Wednesday, January 6, at the Gathering Place in the Tower. Complete with coffee and cookies! I have invited well known Naples’s travel agent Connie Moody of Preferred Travel to present some choices for us for this winter. The only prerequisite Arbor Trace asks is that you be able- bodied enough to travel. At this time we will not have an Arbor Trace escort or a tour director with us. That could change as the group grows.

Bring your travel ideas and desires January 6, and Cherie plans to bring some Caribbean Cruise possibilities for this winter and ideas for other trips in 2016 also. Please join us. -Joan Millon

Holiday Thoughts

The Hanukkah dinner held for residents of the Jewish faith was held on Dec 9, the 4th night of the festival. A large number of residents, Jewish and non Jewish, ate together at large tables and lit the candles. Hanukkah, no matter how it is spelled, is not a religious holiday. Rather it is a celebration of the re-dedication of the Temple when the Maccabees defeated the Seleucid Empire in ancient times. The story goes that the oil for the holy light in the Temple was only enough for one night but miraculously burned for eight nights. We now light a special candelabra called a menorah which has eight candles and one lighter candle. Each night of the holiday, a candle is lit until the last night when all eight are lit.

When I was a youngster, this holiday was not as celebrated as it is now. It has come into prominence because it was felt that Jewish children should have a festival near to Christmas. They receive money as a gift, eat special foods (potato pancakes and donuts), light their menorah and play a game with a special top called a dreidel. Of course, everyone eats and eats good food.

We didn’t get any money at our party or play with the dreidel but we did eat potato pancakes which were better than other times, about as good as Trader Joe’s. They were grated raw potatoes, best are grated. Ge, our favorite baker, supplied us with delicious donuts filled with jelly, what we called a Bismarck

in Chicago. They were a real treat.

I used to hang up my stocking too at Christmas and would receive an apple, an orange, a walnut, and something special like a new tooth brush. I don’t have a fireplace now so guess I can’t do that but maybe Santa Claus will find me anyway. -Merle Bauser

7January 2016Arbor Glen News

Congrats to Shirley & The Arbor Glen Staff!

In December our assisted living facility, Arbor Glen, had it’s biennial inspection

done by AHCA (Agency of Health Care Administration). This is required by the State of Florida for us to maintain our necessary licensure. The goal of the survey process is to ensure the health, safety, and welfare of persons receiving services in assisted living facilities. Arbor Glen passed the inspection with flying colors and all of our licenses have been approved for renewal. Shirley Harvey, the Director of Nursing, and her staff have done a wonderful job in keeping Arbor Glen up to the high standards that the State requires. We are lucky to have such a great facility right here on our campus! -Jennifer Hoops

Welcome Janet Thomas-KobesArbor Glen Life Enrichment

Coordinator

We are delighted to welcome Janet Thomas-Kobes as our new life enrichment coordinator for Arbor Glen. Janet is originally from Holland, Michigan and brings with her many years of experience. While there is nothing about her job she

doesn’t love, her favorite part is the process of listening to the residents and then developing meaningful activities to meet their needs. Janet loves animals and has 3 dogs-2 older Labrador retrievers, Lexi and Tanner and 1 young Pitbull named Grace. In her free time she enjoys reading and gardening. -Sandy Steinbach

A special thanks to all of the residents in our community who take time out of their schedules to share their talents with those living in Arbor Glen. Your volunteerism makes this community a truly special place where everyone feels loved. Thank you so much!!! You are appreciated!! -Sandy Steinbach

Festive Trolley Tour

A group of 25 of us had an enjoyable evening out on the luxurious Premier Trolley. We started the evening heading down to Vanderbilt Beach to The Beach Box where we enjoyed a cocktail and what turned out to be a lovely sunset. We then boarded the trolley and headed down to Mangrove Café on 5th Avenue, where we enjoyed a wonderful meal. On our way home we sang carols and enjoyed a Christmas light tour through Victoria Park. Keep your eye posted for the next trip on this trolley! -Sandy Steinbach

Christmas Music Set Tone for Holiday

No holiday has inspired more composers than Christmas to celebrate the birth of Christ and Fred and Elsa Katz presented the best of the best this December for a grateful audience in the Tower Gathering Place. The familiar tunes were performed by a variety of artists: “Deck the Halls” by the Cleveland

orchestra, the “Hallelujah Chorus” by the London Symphony and “Joy to the World” by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. The famous three tenors, Jose Carreras, Placida Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti, thrilled the audience with “Mille Cherubini in Coro,” and “O Holy Night.” More contemporary songs were “White Christmas,” sung by Bing Crosby, “Do You Hear What I Hear?” performed by Kristin Chenoweth and “Twas the Night before Christmas” by Judy Collins. -Eric Pachner
