December 2015Welcome Art & Della Johnson TP 206

Art and Della are the most charming and thoughtful couple. Art was born in Carthage, MO but in 7th grade moved to Seattle and then to Palo Alto, CA. He went to San Francisco State and subsequently worked at United Airlines as a jet engine mechanic for 10 years. Next, a major switch into real estate.

Della was born in Los Banos, CA, received an AA in Business from San Jose City College and worked at City College Hall Los Banos for 4 years and IBM in San Jose plus a short career as a stewardess with American Airlines.

Now. Where did these two meet? An airlines bash? No. Nov 14,1965 they met on the dance floor at Tiger A Go Go in San Francisco and married in June, 1967.

When married, they remodeled their home themselves and sold it for a profit. This began a series of house renovations and convinced Art to leave the airlines and make a living in real estate in El Granada. Investing in several small businesses followed with Della as bookkeeper. Eventually a vending business for 20 years in Mission Viejo.

They retired in 2002. They also had 2 sons who now live Roseville, CA and Fenton,MO. They followed the younger son when he graduated from Seminary to Fairhope, AL 7 Years ago. He was transferred to Mo but Della wanted warmth, they knew FL well and finally chose the best place on the west coast, Naples.

They are happily living here, meeting new people, enjoying the entertainment, food and wonderful staff. Maybe they could soon sell the apartment for a profit but I sure hope they don’t!

Director’s Notes

Last month the Presidents of both Arbor Trace and Tower Pointe Condominium Associations hosted a “Newcomers” social at the Top of the Pointe, to welcome those new to the community and to help them get acquainted with not only other new residents, but also with key staff that they are likely to encounter as they become familiar with the community and the myriad of services that are offered. For the benefit of those new to the community I was asked to explain the relationship between the various business entities within our community and how they all relate. For the benefit of those who were unable to attend the “Newcomers” social and for those of you who are still confused about how we are organized, I will attempt to explain this in simple terms.

In late 2007, the residents of both Arbor Trace and Tower Pointe banded together to purchase the Clubhouse, including the pool amenities from the Georgia Tech University Foundation. The developers had gifted the property to Georgia Tech years earlier and they had no interest in being a landlord. Tower Trace LLC was created to take title to the property and hold the assets. The Tower Trace board is responsible for the overall maintenance of the Clubhouse and amenities. Tower Trace is also responsible for the real estate operation which is managed by our broker, Jennie Bradford.

Also in 2007, Arbor Pointe Management LLC was created, but not activated. After an unsuccessful stint with an outside management company, Arbor Pointe Management was activated in 2010 and signed a lease with Tower Trace to manage the property and amenities, including Arbor Glen. Arbor Pointe Management has its own board who are responsible for the day to day operations, including all services and amenities as expressed in the Use and Service agreement every resident signs once they become a unit owner. The Arbor Pointe Management board sets policy and the procedures by which we deliver the various services to the community. As Executive Director, I manage the 111 employees through the various department heads in food and beverage, maintenance, housekeeping, accounting, social activities, human resources, marketing and nursing services. The two condominium associations in turn, contract annually with Arbor Pointe Management to provide maintenance, housekeeping, accounting, concierge and management services to their respective communities.

Arbor Trace and Tower Pointe Condominium Associations, through their own elected boards set policy and enforce the rules and regulations set for the governing documents of their respective associations. At the end of the day, the entire community is managed by the various boards comprised completely of Arbor Trace and Tower Pointe unit owners. In this respect, the unit owners do indeed dictate what happens within our community. I think this system of management, while somewhat complicated, works very well for us and is what sets us apart from other senior living communities.

In other news, I would like to point out a particular problem we are experiencing in the Colonnade Room and to a certain degree on takeout orders. Each evening we offer a four course meal consisting of a soup, salad, entrée and dessert to all residents, whether eating in the dining room or picking up their meal to go. We feel that at $16.00, this is a good value for the amount of food provided. We recognize that sometimes, this may be more food than what some people can consume at one sitting and the servers are asked to package any leftovers, including the soup or a dessert to be taken home. This is something that we do routinely and is not a problem. However, it has come to my attention that some residents, after having eaten their soup, salad, entrée and dessert in the dining room are requesting additional soup(s), dessert(s) or fruit to be boxed up to take home. While we do not want any resident to go hungry, the Board feels that when some residents abuse the system, everyone else is subsidizing that resident’s weekly grocery bill by providing breakfast and lunch for the next day. Therefore, effective immediately, it is the Board’s policy that any additional food requested over and above what is provided as part of the typical four course meal will no longer be allowed.

As a reminder, the Colonnade Room offers a nice lunch menu featuring salads and sandwiches, which may be ordered for takeout Monday through Saturday by calling the Clubhouse. Your order must be placed by 10:30 am and can be picked up by 12:00 noon.

Yours truly,

Dan EdenfieldExecutive Director

The Man With the

Horn

WOW! What a fantastic presentation gifted to us by Marty and Alice Krebs on Friday, November

6. Marty has been a jazz trumpet player in his spare time for many years and friends with Jebry and her band. He invited them to play for us and joined them in some truly memorable songs. On top of it we were treated to drinks and hors d’oeuvres!

Marty’s trumpet and Jebry’s voice combined with the bass, Carlos Fusillo, piano, Mel Rosen, and drummer, Bobby Philips had the Top of the Pointe rocking! “You Made Me Love You,”“There Will Never Be Another You,” “It’s All Right With Me,” to name a few. Marty’s singing a la Louis Armstrong, of “Do You Know What It Means To Miss New Orleans?” plus the trumpet solo brought the house down. On top of that, Jebry gave us a combine of “Sheik of Araby” and “Caravan”, complete with fancy head shawl, and further instrument solos by the band. Bebop came in with “Georgia Brown,” very well done. Then she and Marty did a clever duet combining “Bourbon Street Parade” and “Bill Bailey” which offered a prize to someone who could name the latter tune. Heidi Stryker was the winner of the “prize”, Carlos the bass player. She came up while he serenaded her in Italian with “Santa Lucia,” a big laugh for all.

Jebry has been performing in Naples for 29 years and is often at our dances. I have been a fan of hers for at least 25 years and honestly cannot say I have witnessed a better show than this one. Marty is a treasure and I hope I can speak for all who were there to say a great thank you to him and his wife and to hope that we will hear him play again with this delightful band. -Merle Bauser

Trip to Six Mile Cypress Preserve

It is hard to believe this natural wonder is in the midst of Fort Myers! It was a joy to walk on the boardwalk, and see this special environment, as Florida originally was. Sitting in the shade, listening to the woods and smelling the Cypress trees was really relaxing. Our knowledgeable tour guides were happy to point out many animals and interesting facts on the local flora and fauna and what a

special role the native plants play in our ecosystem. -Sandy Steinbach

Helpful Holiday Tips

The holidays are filled with reflection and family. Here are some suggestions to help you if you are facing them without your spouse for the first time or you find yourself in a new caregiving role.

1. Make time to eat well and exercise2. Just take it ‘one day at a time’3. Let your cherished memories come to mind and talk about them. Expressing your feelings can help you understand why you feel the way you do.4. Do something for someone else. Helping others can be a great mood lifter.5. Recognize that the anticipation of the pain at holiday time is usually worse than the actual day6. Get rid of imagined guilt. You are doing the best you can at this time, all things conserved with the information you have at this time. 7. Take advantage of religious affiliation, if you have one. If you have been inactive in matters of faith, this might be the time to become involved again.8. Most of all, if you find yourself feeling blue just remember: The choice is always yours: The sky is partly sunny, and the glass is half full and revel in our gratitude for our bounty, health, hope, and our courage to face each day with hope and determination. -Sandy Steinbach

FYIAs we all enjoy the lovely atrium garden maintained by Sandy and Bob Bortz, there are many things that went into it’s planning that we don’t take into consideration.

First, the many hours those two put into maintenance and also rearranging plant material. More often than not, their posture is “bottom’s up” and their clothing damp from the Florida humidity.

A new fact I learned is that Sandy has chosen the White Swamp Milkweed plant to attract the Monarch Butterfly which has found our garden already. Butterflies have four life stages: eggs, larva (caterpillar), pupa (chrysalia), and adult. They seek out a host plant and devour it in a very short time. During this period you see only sticks in the ground, but don’t despair, because throughout the process a beautiful creature will emerge and the plant will regain it’s foliage.

Much more that creating a “feast for the eyes”, Sandy and Bob are contributing to our botanical knowledge, and we owe them our appreciation. -Jenny Duffy
