Silverhatten, where it all began, turns 40!Hotell Silverhatten celebrates it’s 40th year on Saturday. This is the hotel where it all began back in the beginning of the 70’s.

Silverhatten (the Silver Hat) was built by Harold Tallfeldt, who died 10 years ago, and Lawe Söderholm. It took nearly three years of planning and fighting the bureaucracy before they got all the permits. At that time, many locals did not want loads of people invading ‘their’ Arjeplog.

Some politicians wanted the hotel to be built next to the Silver Museum; some people suggested Renberget, about five kilometres east of the hotel.

First car testers Tallfeldt and Söderholm did not give up until they were allowed to build their hotel

on Öberget mountain. They wanted to build 60

rooms but the government decided that 30 rooms was enough. Once the building

got started, everything went very quickly.

The first car testers were using the airplane landing strip on Lake Hornavan to test their cars. Harald was chairman of the airplane company, Silver Wings.

They needed a place to stay, so he invited them to stay at the newly-built hotel and so it all began.

Silverhatten was also used as an office for the Bosch car testers.

Good Old DaysIn those days the hotel was small and cosy and after some years, Harold and his wife Gun-Mari became famous for their food and personal service.

They ran the hotel more like a home and veteran car testers like Dieter Jonner, Dieter Roller and Dietmar Hackner can tell tales of how things were in ‘the good old days’. Jonner, for instance, used to help prepare the food in the hotel kitchen.

Harald Tallfält built Hotell Silverhatten and invited the first car testers to stay there in the 70’s.

This & That...• Frasses restaurant is closed for a few days until their ventilation problems are solved. You can have the lunch of the day during the week but no hamburgers or fast food will be served until the new ventilation system is working properly. • Harrys is open every day as usual from late afternoon and evening, with live entertainment and special offers on the weekend. See details on page 8, What’s On. You can see some mingle pictures from Harry’s here:http://gallery.me.com/jofoto#gallery.

• The German company that was denied building permission for Nellys (café, bakery, pub?) on the market square (Guldklas torg) will now be able to buy the building that was the old tourist information office. This decision and the fact that they got a long lease on the grounds around the building was taken by the municipal council after a long debate this week.

• Many places in Lapland and in Arjeplog experienced temperatures of of minus 40°C this week. The official Swedish cold record of all time is minus 52.6°C which was measured in Vuoggatjålme in the Kommun of Arjeplog on February 2, 1966.

• Some of the actors and directors as well as a bishop who were guests at the Film Festival in Arjeplog last weekend were taken for a fast ride in a Porsche (Porsche-On-Ice). They were also able to try a BMW prototype with a 550 horsepower engine on Icemakers’ tracks. They thoroughly enjoyed these exciting activities.

Kurt Jofs (left) and Jan Edvardsson are the joint owners of Silverhatten/Kraja/Silver Lodge.

Sofi Holmgren, manager of Hotell Silverhatten welcomes you to the 40year celebrations on Saturday.

When Harold Tallfäldt filed for bankruptcy the hotel was taken over by the Kommun. A host of different lease-hold-ers tried, some rather unsuccessfully, to run it.

In 2002 Jan Edvardsson bought the hotel and subsequently also Kraja, Silver Lodge and a few other hotels. Since then a lot of money has been invested and Silverhatten has been extended and improved a great deal. This applies to Kraja and Silver Lodge as well.

Today Silverhatten/ Kraja/ Silver Lodge together offer more than 400 rooms and have a seasonal staff of 85.

Recently, Kurt Jofs, a businessman with a past history in Ericsson (cell-phones) became a part-owner.

Ghost at HattenOne of the only constant things throughout the 40 years at the hotel is the resident ghost.

The site of the hotel is said to be an ancient burial place for the Saami people and a lot of people have testi-fied to the presence of this ghost.

Open during the summerSofi Holmgren, manager of the hotel, told us that until now Silverhatten has mostly been a winter hotel, catering for car testers and ‘event’ visitors. However, now they are trying to recruit a person who can run the hotel as a summer hotel as well.

Sofi will be going to Germany in the summer to sell Arjeplog and Hotell Silverhatten. They are also hoping that FlyCar, the company that has charter flights to Arvidsjaur in the winter time, will also run summer charter flights.

Celebrations of the 40th anniver-sary of Silverhatten will take place all day Saturday. See page 8, What’s On.

My job can be divided into two distinct areas. One is to represent the people of Arjeplog and

to lead the political process. The second is to work for the development of the the municipality (Kommun).

The political process formulates the objectives of what we would like to do. The Kommun’s task

is basically to provide education and care for both children and the elderly. On the technical side, we handle most of the streets in the municipality, street lights, water and sewage and refuse collection.

Our revenues consist of the taxes we charge our residents and the government grants the state

gives us. The latter is an attempt on the part of the Government to equalize conditions between rich and poor municipalities and between municipalities in different parts of the country with varying conditions.

Since we do not have an unlimited amount of money we have to give priority to certain sectors

and activities within the Kommun. My job is to lead this work and to lead the meetings of the Municipal Executive Board which is made up of a small group of representatives of each political party. The purpose of these meetings is to prepare for the decisions that are then taken by the Municipal Council, which is the supreme governing body of the Kommun. This Municipal Council is made up of 31 members who are elected by the inhabitants of Arjeplog every four years. When the aims are formulated and the money distributed, the employees of the Kommun then do the best they can under the circumstances.

In the work involving the development of the Kommun it is my job to find out what the various

businesses and organizations need in order to develop. The task of the Kommun is not primarily to create jobs for our inhabitants (the locals) even though we have between 300 and 400 employees at the moment.

Our task is to pave the way and help local companies develop and in that way increase job

opportunities. Therefore it is important for me to meet with various representatives of the companies as much as possible. If you see me at the car testing sites, it is probably because I am trying to get a picture of the

car testing business. This is necessary in order to work out how we can co-operate with each other and hopefully in that way develop the Kom-mun.

Meet Anna Sundström, Cartest – this week’s local Name: Anna Sundström

Age: 23

Family: Mother Bente, father Alf, sister Åse and sambo (living together as married) with Jerry Jonnerby.

Home: Arjeplog.

Occupation: I work for Cartest in the winters. I do the bookkeeping and clear the snow and fix the tracks. It is a family business so I also do other jobs when necessary. In the summers I work at the home for old people. I enjoy the quietness, the routine and helping older people which is so different from my work at Cartest.

Favourite food: Traditional Swedish dishes, husmanskost (see last week’s issue of The Arjeplog Times) such as meat soup.

Dream car: I am not interested in cars and don’t have a dream car. My interest lies in real horsepower, in my horse, Nellie.

Present car: I drive a silver Peugeot, I don’t know the model.

Sparetime activities: I have lots of spare-time activities and I work a lot, so I have to organize my time well. I spend time with my horse, Nellie and I am a riding instructor at the stables here. I am also an instructor at Träningkompaniet in kick-box and spinning. I train at the gym, jog and swim. And then there is singing, which I love. I sing in the choir which is run

by Maria who is the cantor at the church in Arjeplog. Music is impor-tant for me and I am also learning to play the piano. Now and then, I watch a film on TV and eat sweets. It happens so rarely that I really enjoy the relaxa-tion. What’s good in ArjeplogWe are surrounded by Nature that is so peaceful. We have so much space to move around in. I know most of the people who live here and there is a good feeling of togetherness and belonging.

What’s bad in Arjeplog? The distance to other places from here. On the other hand I try to see things in a constructive way and when we have to drive far (such as for horse-training and competitions) I enjoy the journey in the car, talking to the other passengers.

Music you listen to?A total mixture of music. In the choir we sing both modern and old songs.

What’s important in life? To spend time and money doing the things you like to do. I think it is so important to allow yourself to do and enjoy those things.

Anna Sundström, Cartest

The Daimler car testers told us that they enjoy going to Pizzeria Verona to eat, drink beer and watch their favourite team FC Stuttgart playing soccer. Last Tuesday evening they enjoyed watching FC Stuttgart play Barcelona in the Champions league. The result was 1-1.

Verona has been turned into a sports bar where it is possible to follow your favourite soccer team or watch other sporting events. There are 2 big screens so it is possible to see what you want.

Water, Water, EverywhereWater is necessary for all life on earth. KonsumCOOP supermarket in Arjeplog sell more water in winter than any other Coop supermarket in Sweden!?Why? Because car testers prefer to buy bottled water.

There are more than 8000 lakes, rivers and streams with pure water in the municipal area of Arjeplog. This is more than in any other area in Scandinavia.

The water from the tap is so clean and pure that it only needs to be filtered through sand and occasionally get a dose of carbon dioxide to maintain the correct Ph-value. The water in Arjeplog is very ”soft” which means that it is low in minerals such as calcium. It does not contain any additives like chlorine.

Tap water is pure water that comes straight from the untouched mountains. There are no industries, farms or other activities that can pollute the water.

Sediment samples from the bottom of Lake Hornavan (where Arjeplog gets its tap water) reveal stunning facts. There is no chemical difference today compared to 10,000 years ago. There has been no measurable effect of nearly 40 years of car testing on the lakes! “We do continuous tests of the water in Arjeplog and in

winter the water in the taps is extremely pure. In fact it is so pure and low in ions that you can use it instead of distilled water for a battery”, says Lars-Gunnar Burman, technical engineer at the Kommun. “And it tastes good, you should try it”, he adds.

Locals cannot understand why anyone would want to pay for drinking water.

Anette Westerlund, manager at Coop Konsum said that they received a call from the distributors in Stockholm asking if they made a mistake in ordering so much water. They said that Coop-Konsum in Arjeplog sells more bottled water than any other Coop shop in Sweden during the winter.

She is a bit ambiguous, on the one hand she wants to sell as much water as possible, but on the other hand she is proud of the excellent tap water in Arjeplog.

Car tester buy mostly carbonated water, but many also buy regular water. Anette is quick to point out that their Coop brand water beat famous brands like Evian and San Pellegrino, in a large blind test conducted by Aftonbladet, one of the biggest newspapers in Sweden. Runner-up in the test was tap water carbonated in a Sodastream machine (Sprudelwassergeräte). We are sure that if they used water from Arjeplog this would have been the winning drink.

So next time you are thirsty try a glass of fresh “Horna-van water”. It’s good, healthy, cold and absolutely free.

The clean water in the taps in Arjeplog comes from the mountains.

Anette Westerlund, manager of the Coop Konsum supermarket in Arjeplog orders more bottled water than any other Coop in Sweden during the winter.
