During 1968-69 several groups and individuals have been copying cemetery inscriptions in Desha County. We were appalled at the conditions we found. Floods.· time and, most of all, neglect have done irreparable damage. Thanks to the surveys, people are beginning to appreciate the historical value of old burying grounds and are making an effort to preserve what we have left .. -- Mrs. J. H. Stroud! HOLLY GROVE CEMETERY, TRIPPE, DESHA COUNTY, ARKANSAS

Holly Grove Cemetery is at Trippe in Desha County, Arkansas, on the MCGehee-Arkansas City Highway. The cemetery property adjoins that of Delta Country Club on both sides of the highway. Maude Trippe Bowden, McGehee, who made the survey Nov. 6, 1968, said:

Thirty unmarked graves on side next to the bayou, fully that many on opposite side of highway where the old church once stood. The church was used during the early 1900's as a school until it burned. Six graves marked at one time with hand carved wooden head boards were behind the church. All of the many graves were marked at one time., The church was built by Grandfather Trippe, and he gave the land for the cemetery, about two, and one-half acres, on either side of a narrow country road. The holly trees were planted in front of the church and along the sandy road. Encroachment accounts for the smalIne,sson one side. Infringement will also be found next Crooked Bayou .

GEORGE David E. George died at Enid, Oklahoma Territory,. Jan. 13, 1903, alone, broke and

despondent. He was a part-time house painter,a drifter in the brawling Territory. After his death the story was started that he was really John Wilkes Booth, the man who shot Presidel1t Lincoln. It made a big splash in the newspapers and much has been written on the subject of his actual identity. The body was embalmed and to this day has never been buried. On a 1902 insurance application he gave his name as David Elihu George, born June 14, 1844 at French Camp, Miss. In 1902 he is known to have visited ''home ", somewhere in Arkansas. Two names crop up in connection with this man: William Bailey George "of Arkansas" and a nephew, Willy or Wilty George. I am trying to find out just who this man was, if it is possible at this late date. My interest is historical, not genealogical, but in this case it amounts to the same thing. If anyone has any clues, please write me.
