In the United States, there are more than 30 million small businesses, collectively employing 59.9 million people, which is 47.3% of all employees in the country. Locally, small business is the backbone of the Greater Burlington economy. This month, the Greater Burlington Partnership is shining the light on the importance of small business, culminating with a celebration event: Root, Root, Root…for Small Business.

When thinking about small business, consider this: small businesses are typically the first to step up and support local athletics, the arts, community festivals, school fundraisers, church youth groups, community beautification and more. Why might that be? Perhaps it is because small businesses are owned by friends and neighbors who understand that giving back is part of what makes Greater Burlington such an awesome place to live.

But the contribution of small businesses to the quality of life goes even further than philanthropy. Small businesses are owned by entrepreneurs, and the very nature of an entrepreneur is that of an innovator. That innovation shows up on the menus of local restaurants, in storefront displays, in the quality service delivered by professional and personal service businesses, and in the community events and promotions that small business owners help plan. That demonstration of innovation in business adds value to the lives of those fortunate enough to live here and makes the community a fun, interesting and welcoming place for tourists.

For many people, owning a small business is the epitome of the American Dream. While it requires grit, determination and some calculated risk-taking, small business ownership for many is the path to financial freedom. For some it can even change the trajectory for their entire family by creating a business that is handed down from generation to generation. Additionally, these small local businesses provide important employment options for people, often with flexibility not possible in larger, corporate settings.

The year of the pandemic was fraught with uncertainty and disruption. Small businesses were impacted at a disproportional level. In many ways, the pandemic highlighted the importance of small business to the economic health of the region. The Greater Burlington Partnership salutes this vital segment of the business community. Chamber members are invited to join together and Root, Root, Root…for Small Business on Friday, April 30 at Community Field.

Integra Pool Covers, an innovator within the automatic swimming pool cover industry, has agreed to purchase the former Siemens manufacturing facility located in the Flint Ridge Business Park. This new location allows the company to better meet the incredible demand for their automatic swimming pool safety covers and replacement safety covers, while accelerating their expansion into the production of vinyl pool liners. Integra Pool Covers is transforming the pool cover industry with these product lines.

Integra Pool Covers is part of the newly formed Xplore Pool & Spa Group that is headquartered in Knoxville, Tennessee. This group is comprised of a collection of leading brands that have been passionately sponsoring quality family time for over two decades.

“Integra Pool Covers prides itself on our ability to provide high-quality safety covers within 48 hours,” states Toby Karsten, General Manager at Integra Pool Covers. “The addition of the Burlington site allows us to maintain high standards and better serve Value Added Resellers, independent dealers and the families they serve. We are especially excited to be creating 80 jobs over the next three years and leveraging local talents and knowledge to fuel even more growth.”

The Greater Burlington Partnership Economic Development team assisted Integra Pool Covers through Iowa Economic Development Authority’s Targeted Jobs Program application. Burlington is one of five Iowa cities that offers the Targeted Jobs Tax Credit Program, which refunds a portion of the Iowa withholding taxes for positions created above the county wide wage threshold of $21.61 per hour. Integra Pool Covers has committed to 40 of the positions being at or above the wage threshold. The company is also looking to take advantage of the Iowa Industrial New Jobs Training program which is administered through Southeastern Community College, and provides financial assistance for new employee training.

The Partnership and the entire community could not be more pleased to see this world class company, their vendors, and their dealer networks expanding into the Greater Burlington area. Welcome to Iowa!

Even though travel has slowed considerably due to the COVID-19 pandemic, work to attract visitors to the area never halted. The Convention & Visitors Bureau has been busy building relationships with Viking River Cruises and Choice Travel Agency/Air Choice One to put together amazing experiences for future visitors.

Air Choice One has started a new partnership with Choice Travel Agency. The goal for this new partnership is to attract visitors from Chicago and St. Louis to fly to Greater Burlington for a packaged adventure. Choice Travel will have the ability to book the visitors' total experience – from airfare to lodging accommodations to event tickets – making the experience as smooth as possible for the visitor. These packages are currently being developed. They may be general "come see the area" packages – or focused around a theme or large community events.

Viking River Cruises will begin sailing the 400 passenger vessel on the Mississippi River in July 2022. Fourteen dates have been secured on the calendar to host these visitors from all around the world. Once in the community, passengers will have the option to explore the community on their own or participate in one of the pre-planned itineraries. These experiences will provide the opportunity for the visitor to dive into the history and art scenes, as well as the farm to table experience.

Greater Burlington is very excited to start welcoming visitors with lots of new experiences soon!

Why did you join YP? I was excited to join YP to meet other young professionals, business owners, and people in the community. It has provided me an excellent opportunity to better understand what is going on in the community and how to better serve the area as a local community banker.

Which community organizations/events do you volunteer for? I volunteer as an ambulance driver for a local volunteer EMS service, teach various topics for Junior Achievement, and assist at the local airport. I also volunteer for various committees at my church including assisting with mission trips through my church's mission organization, Harvest Call.

What do you enjoy most about Greater Burlington? The Greater Burlington area has an incredible community of hard-working individuals who strive for growth in every facet of the community. This has been amazing to see and be a part of as a local community banker.

Unique about me: My side hobby is flying airplanes. In my spare time you can usually find me out at the airport flying or giving people flight lessons. I enjoy sharing my passion, so feel free to give me a call if you have ever wondered what things look like from above!
