My Fellow Anglers & Friends,

You know we tend to feel that the grass is greener on the other side. Maybe it is but the truth is that every green field has brown patches. I recently visited Australia to meetfriends and for business. I brought along my fishing equipment as we hear a lot about how easy it is to fish in Australia.

I hit quite a few of brown patches there. Fishing was tough. I fished at two well known jetties, a pond, a water way, and a river. I didn’t catch anything, in fact I was fishing with quite a few local anglers and no one caught anything (at least the “crabers” caught crabs). It was only at my final day of fishing that I manage to land some trout.

Fishing is not a thousand times better in Australia (well, granted that it is easier) but it surely is more comfortable with the cooler weather, more fun with super crazy winds, and definitely cleaner fishing areas. We may not be able to have the winds and cool weather but we can surely have cleaner fishing areas.

Also my apologies for being late this month due to me falling sick. This is one disadvantage of not having a team. When I am down or my business partner is down, we get stuck. It is time for The Asian Angler to grow. Anyone interested in being part of a fast growing mag-azine? Do send me an email should you be interested in a sales posi-tion. Do also checkout our Classifieds section for more postings.

Thank you and have fun reading.

Cheers,PhilEditor In Chief

I must admit that when it comes to travelling overseas to fish, one of the things that I really dislike is having to carry rods in a rod tube. It is really inconvenient and budg-et airlines the likes of Air Asia, will use this opportunity to make more money off you. I am not one of those nay sayers that want to see Air Asia go down but I still would like to spend less on flight tickets and more on my fishing.

Happy Traveller

Being a travel bug, I travel a lot and my fishing gears always travel with me. On my recent trip to the land down under, I was all smiles as I do not have to check in a rod tube in the special counter for oversize lug-gage. I don’t get people looking at me as if I am transporting firearms. Having the word “Bazooka” on your rod tube doesn’t help either.

I just packed all my fishing gear in my bag and have the said bag checked in. Collecting my bag at the airport was also a breeze. I needn’t have to visit the oversize luggage either. I just waited for my bag at the carousal, pick it up, and I am on my way. All these were made possible with the new Berkley AMP travel

Lightweight stainless steel guides help make the Berkley AMP a light rod to carry.

Light On The Pocket

There are quite a few travel rods in the world and few make it to our shores. Those that do, come with a price tag that is not very pocket friendly. The reason is that travel rods, unlike single piece or two piece rods, are dif-ficult to make and they cost more to produce. The backbone of the fishing rod is essential and get-ting that right on a four piece rod is not easy.

Berkley made it possible with the Berkley AMP four piece travel rod, a rod that I love a lot. Not only is it convenient to bring about my travels with, it is also light on the pockets, and definite-ly is a rod that “travel bug angler” must have.

Good Looks And Durability

The Berkley AMP is a good look-ing rod with Japanese design cues. Coming with a split EVA handle design, stainless steel guides, and missing fore EVA handle, the Berk-ley AMP is designed with weight reduction in mind. However, it is not necessary a superlight rod. What-ever weight saved goes back into its powerful and strong blank.

Most lightweight rods have thin fragile blanks (blank walls). Don’t get me wrong as they are capa-ble rods with enough power and strength to take on brutes. The only let down is that they need extra care as they fracture easily. But not the AMP travel rod.

The Berkley AMP travel rod comes with a thicker carbon graphite blank wall making it a tough and strong rod. A more accurate term will be a “less fragile” rod as compared to most lightweight rods.

18 19

Page 11: The Asian Angler - April 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Superb Caster

The Berkley AMP casts really well thanks to its flexible tip, allowing me to cast with ease. A simple flick of the tip would send the lure flying towards the horizon. It is also a great rod for vari-ous casting techniques including the underhand cast of which is a challenge to do on most of the medium heavy action rods, but simple on the AMP.

Smooth Casting Guides

The Berkley AMP comes with stainless steel guides. These thin guides are strong and light both of which helps with weight reduction and durability. They also look great being slim and thin. They help make casting smooth.

Most anglers prefer ceramic guides as they are common and have been used for years. However, stainless steel guides are great too with the additional benefit of looking good. There’s noth-ing wrong with ceramic guides and the only disadvantage is that they are heavier and they look bulky.

Four Pieces And A Bag

The model I have with me is the Berk-ley AMP AC664MH A of which means simply a 6’6” rod in four pieces. Hav-ing four sections, each section is about 1.7 feet in length of which fits nicely into my luggage bag (1.9 feet tall). The rod also comes with a rod bag that keeps every section protect-ed (to a certain extent). This is what makes it a superb rod for travellers.

My Thoughts

Overall I am very happy with the Berkley AMP four piece travel rod as it is inexpen-sive, great value for money, convenient to carry and travel with, lightweight, strong and durable, sensitive, and it looks great.

The Berkley AMP caught the attention of many anglers while casting on a jetty in Semaphore beach, Adelaide, South Aus-tralia. One thing for sure is that the AMP looks good. Another reason could be that it comes in four pieces of which is seldom seen. However, I got a sneaky feeling that it caught all the attention because it was the smallest, thinnest, rod on the jetty.

You know you have a very good setup in your hands when you hear “Wow! That guy can really cast” coming from a crowd of regular anglers.

The smokin’ gun in Quantum’s array of reels is this matt black and gun metal colored, tattooed, and weapons grade like looking reel.

The Quantum smoke is a reel of which Quantum engineers had performed somewhat of an ex-traordinary feat. They created a light weight reel using aluminium instead of carbon or magnesium based materials.

Using aluminium gives the Quantum Smoke rigidity and a solid feel of which is a great feel-ing to have as it gives you the extra confidence while fishing and playing the fish. As an an-gler you want to know that eve-rything is secure and well even under pressure.

Minimalism Rules

Like the EXO PT reels, the Smoke also was built based on the minimalism platform where unnecessary weight that will not have any impact on the reel’s performance is re-moved. What’s left is all the important parts sitting in a light weight reel.

It is like building a high performance fast car. To make an already fast car go faster, engineers reduce the weight of the car by either using light weight materials, or by remov-ing unnecessary items, or even both.

30 31

Page 17: The Asian Angler - April 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

The Sleek Assassin

The Quantum Smoke looks great too. In gun-smoke matt color adorned with printed Quantum logo and words that look like tattoos, the Quan-tum Smoke emits an aura of elegance yet subtly dangerous especially if you are a finned creature that lives underwater.

If you have played this game called Hitman on your gaming console, the Quantum Smoke does conjure up memories. Your character in dark matt black suit, red tie, looking sleek and el-egant, yet dangerous; does resemble the Quan-tum Smoke somewhat.

Sleek reel with a star drag the likes of a ninja’s weapon.

32 33

Page 18: The Asian Angler - April 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Quantum Smoke In Action

The Smoke cast really well with a silky smooth spin of the spool as the deep diver (lure) glides towards the horizon, landing a long distance from where I was standing.

Happy with the distance, I reeled the lure hoping that a toman would hit. Deep divers are notoriously heavy (feeling) lures to crank. Some reels make crank-ing deep divers easier than others. The Quantum Smoke sits somewhere in the middle. The Smoke claims to have a maximum drag of 15lbs but the unit I tested only managed 13.8lbs. However, the drag of the Smoke is smooth up to about sev-enty to eighty percent of the drag set-ting (within 10lbs to 11lbz) after which its quality of smoothness reduces. This is quite good comparing to many other reels in the market.

34 35

Page 19: The Asian Angler - April 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

The Verdict

Cosmetics wise it loses out to its brethren the Quantum EXO but comparing to other reels available, it sits up there with high points of which is in the, “I love it” category.

It performs well with silky smooth spool rotations and drag of which equals to consistent casting distance and lesser op-portunity of losing your fish due to a sticky drag.

When I say consistent distance, it doesn’t mean that you will cast to the same exact drop spot every time you cast. This is measured based on a drop zone with an allowance of 8 feet. Its line capacity (12lbs / 135 yards) is more than enough for our type of fishing and it feels rigid and confident thus giving confidence to the angler as well.

It dawned on me that we have nev-er test drove any fishing lines and fishing lines are super important as it is the link between us and the fish.

In this issue we test drove the Spi-derWire UltraCast FluoroBraid.

Testing In St Kilda

I have been using braided lines for a very long time now and I have never used one that sinks fast. When the SpiderWire UltraCast FluoroBraid touched our shores I knew I had to try one.

I got myself a 10lb FluoroBraid and proceeded to fill up my BC reel with it. I then tied on a Fluorocarbon leader and took it to St. Kilda, Ad-elaide (South Australia), for some fishing.

It Sinks, It Sinks

I snapped on a 3 inch Grub secured to a jig-head and made a cast into the some-what fast flowing inlet. The soft bait and line sank to bottom at a rather fast rate of which caught me off guard at first. Being rocky at the bottom I lost the jig-head and grub on the first cast.

In fact I lost the next jig-head and grub too on my second cast. I decided then to go weedless this time using a worm-hook and another 3 inch grub, rigged Texas style (Texas Rig). I managed to escape getting snagged twice and then I got snagged on the rocks again.

Fishing at the very windy St. Kilda Barker Inlet, Adelaide. Me on the left kept getting snagged. My friend on the right had no problems as his braided line floats.

42 43

Page 23: The Asian Angler - April 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

My buddy fishing with me had normal braided line on and he had no problems with the rocky bottom. We used the same jig head and grub.

Although a fast sinking braided line may be the wrong type of line for where I was fishing but all these shows that the Spi-derWire UltraCast FluoroBraid really sinks faster than normal braided lines.

Cuts Through Wind

Not only did it sink fast. I also noticed that it cuts through wind well. We were fishing in very windy conditions and my fishing buddy had problems with his line and bait gliding to the left every time he cast and needed to adjust his casting angle.

On the other hand I had no problems with the winds at all. Well, not totally but I had a very much easier time casting out my bait and it went straight despite the windy conditions. Even after changing to a float-ing lure (had enough of getting snagged) my cast were straight.

44 45

Page 24: The Asian Angler - April 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Wetter On Knots

One tiny problem I noticed with the Spi-derWire UltraCast FluoroBraid, is that it needed to be wetter to get a good knot. I normally use uni to uni knot to link my mainline to my leader line.

Being a slippery line, the FluoroBraid didn’t catch on well and needed more spit (as they say) to get the knot tightly secured.

My Thoughts

Over all I like the SpiderWire UltraCast FluoroBraid as it is an excellent line to use when you need your lure to reach the bottom fast. It is also an excellent line to use in windy conditions and in conditions where the currents are relatively strong. You may want to try out the SpiderWire Ul-traCast FluoroBraid but do remember that you will have to be extra careful with knots.

Fishing Lines Part 2: Super-LinesBy Philemon Foo

52 53

Page 28: The Asian Angler - April 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Last month (issue) we looked at monofilament lines and in this issue we take a look at super lines. Super lines are becoming more popular as more and more anglers move towards using these lines for many reasons.

Super Lines

There are many super line brands in the market of which materials are made with either Dacron, Dyneema, or Spectra (Poly-Ethylene based).

Whatever the material used, these lines have since made their way onto the reels of many an angler. I too use mainly super lines these days during my fish-ing but I still bring along a reel filled with fluorocarbon lines and / or monofilament lines just in case the need arises.

54 55

Page 29: The Asian Angler - April 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

What Makes Super Lines So Attractive?

There are many benefits to the usage of super lines. Even more if you include their use as part of a shoe repair kit while you are stuck with a broken shoe in the middle of the jungle or if you are in need of a knife to cut meat and your knife has gone missing. Let’s just stick to fishing.

Characteristics Of Super Lines

Super lines have a few character-istics being mainly inelastic (zero stretch), high buoyancy (sinks slowly / floats), noisy, smaller di-ameter (thin), stronger (comparing to mono lines), cuts (lines, vegeta-tion, etc), zero memory, visible, etc.

56 57

Page 30: The Asian Angler - April 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Some Of The Benefits

Close To Zero Stretch

Super lines have close to zero stretch which is great. Having close to zero or even zero stretch benefits the angler.

a. Better sensitivity. Without much stretch or any stretch at all, the slightest nibble can be felt especially with a high carbon light rod.

b. Better and easier hook set. Having not much stretch is great especially when you have a lot of line out (when trolling or live-bait drifting). Having a good hook set is important. Not having one may cause you to lose the fish.

c. Feel almost everything. Not having much stretch allows you to feel things like the terrain underwater (mud or sand), structures (logs, weeds, etc), currents (if you feel this then it may be time to change to mono lines), etc.

58 59

Page 31: The Asian Angler - April 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Slow Sinker (Could Be Good)

The depth level that you are fishing at should be one of the factors that help decide what lines to use. Most super-lines are slow sinking or float-ing lines with the exception of lines like the Spiderwire Ultracast Fluoro-braid of which is fast sinking like that of the fluorocarbon lines.

Slow sinking lines are great if you are fishing top water or playing top water lures, or if you are bait fishing using baits such as boilies, corn, etc. and you want your bait to fall slowly.

Some natural foods drop slowly to the bottom and most of the time bait anglers want to mimic this slow drop-ping movement. Slow sinking super lines are great for this type of fishing.

60 61

Page 32: The Asian Angler - April 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Cuts Like A Knife

Super lines cuts through weeds and underwater vegeta-tion just like a knife. This means that if you are fishing in a weedy area and your lines get snagged, the super line out in the water and vegetation could be used to cut your way out thus saving your lure. Of course if it is your hook that is stuck then there is not much that your super line can do to help.

Skinny Bugger

Super lines are smaller in diameter as compared to monofilament lines of the same break strength. Being thinner simply means that you will be able to pack more lines into your spool of which is great and adds confi-dence knowing that you have more than enough lines for your fishing.

Zero Memory

Having zero memory or extremely low memory is great for anglers. High memory lines tend to retain shapes such as curls and are a cause for all sorts of problems such as lower casting distance, lines getting stuck to

62 63

Page 33: The Asian Angler - April 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

What’s Not So Nice

There are also some disadvantages but they are forgivable, of course depending on the fishing conditions. Let’s have a look at some of them.

Noisy Whistler

Super lines emit a high-pitch noise that may put off easily spooked fishes. You could hear this whistling noise too some-times especially when you are fishing in windy conditions.

Thirsty Drinker

Super lines of the braided variety tend to absorb water and when that happens, the line becomes heavier and thus reduc-es your casting distance.

However, the absorption of water by fused lines (non-braided super line) is close to zero. So if you want a line that doesn’t really absorb water, fused lines would be my recommendation.

64 65

Page 34: The Asian Angler - April 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Visible To Fish

Super lines are visible underwater but with better understanding of sci-ence; line manufacturers have been able to reduce the visibility of lines by using colors and various meth-ods.

It has been said that red is the first color to disappear underwater and thus red super lines have since lines the shelves. Other lines that could blend into the underwater environ-ment would be camo colored lines.

Slow Sinker (Could Be Bad)

Well this could be an advantage as well as a disadvantage. However, fast sinking super lines are now available and a good one that I have tested (in saltwater) is the Spider-wire Ultracast Fluorobraid.

66 67

Page 35: The Asian Angler - April 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Destroyer Of Guides

Super lines can create groove in your rod guides and render them useless especially if the rod is used very often for fishing where fishes frequently strip out lines faster than a speeding bullet and are heavier than a few bi-cycles tied together.

Certain rod guides such as those from Fuji are able to withstand such torment better. Roller guides on boat rods or big game rods are also good at reducing such damages.

Abrasion, The Bully

Super lines cannot handle abrasion well. They weaken significantly when brushed against rocks, barnacles, branches of tree, etc.

It is highly recommended that you use a leader material line (monofilament or fluorocarbon type mono lines) with your super lines on your fishing trips.

68 69

Page 36: The Asian Angler - April 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Weak On Knots

Super lines are sharp and they can and will cut. As such only certain knots are recommended for su-per lines and the rest are to be used with caution.

Knots recommended are Palomar Knot & Dou-ble Palomar Knot for tying super lines directly to hooks or snaps, swivels. Albright Knot, Uni to Uni Knot, and FG Knot (usage of large diameter lines) for connecting line to line such as super lines to monofilament leaders.

Ideal Usage

Super lines can be used for all types of fishing be it freshwater river or lake fishing or saltwater big game fishing. However, when you are fishing in a place where fishes are spooked even by their own shadows, you may consider using a quieter and less visible line.

Anglers’ Havens

Laguna Resort, Phuket, ThailandBy Philemon Foo

72 73

Page 38: The Asian Angler - April 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

We have covered a few Anglers’ Ha-vens in Malaysia from budget chalets to the more upmarket and expensive resorts. In this issue we head off to an island in Thailand called Phuket.

Usually when we hear of Phuket, what races to mind are stretches of sunny beaches, wild nightlife, and relaxing massages. Well, with children in tow we can leave out the wild nightlife part and focus more on family activities.

The Island Of Phuket

Phuket is one of the many island des-tinations around Asia where tourists flock to for a holiday. It is the larg-est island in Thailand; similar in size (main island) to that of Singapore and it sits in the Andaman Sea of southern Thailand.

Phuket is generally a very hilly island with about 70% of it covered with hills and the rest are simply just plains. De-velopment has been going on around these hills.

74 75

Page 39: The Asian Angler - April 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Laguna Phuket

There are many hotels and resorts in Phuket. The Laguna is one of my favourites. Located at the famed Bang Tao Beach are, It sits between a tropical lagoon and the Andaman Sea of which is great for the angler and his or her family. The Laguna has a large water park like swim-ming pool with slides, waterfalls, and children pool that will keep the family entertained while you go wet your lines nearby. It also has a kids club where your children to keep your children entertained in a safe environment.

You can also go on a boat ride in the huge la-goon to various other hotels that share the la-goon like the Banyan tree, Best Western Lagu-na, Dusit Thani Laguna, etc.

76 77

Page 40: The Asian Angler - April 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

At Rest In Luxury

The Laguna resort is indeed a place to be pampered. The rooms are well designed and luxurious. The room I had overlooked the lagoon and the swimming pool, of which comes alive at about 10 in the morning.

78 79

Page 41: The Asian Angler - April 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

The beds are comfortable and definitely give a good night’s sleep. I for one am quite par-ticular of the bed that I will be lying on. If something is amiss, I will be like an owl at night and zombie during the day.

80 81

Page 42: The Asian Angler - April 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

82 83

Page 43: The Asian Angler - April 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Activities Outside

I must admit that I didn’t do much outside the resort. We visited Pa-tong Beach during the day (at night this place becomes sin city espe-cially Bangla Road) for a look see and did some shopping in the many shops around the area.

84 85

Page 44: The Asian Angler - April 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

On another day we took a cruise to Phi Phi Island where we did some snorkel-ling and more shopping. It was fun but the island is quite crowded with visi-tors and I must say, really too commer-cialized. We went with the Sea Angel Cruise which is pretty much an average cruise operator.

At night there are two shows to go for. One is the not so family friendly Simon Cabaret where Thailand’s famous la-dyboys in fabulous costumes put on a musical show for you.

A more family friendly one is the Phuket FantaSea Show, a must see during your trip to Phuket. The Phuket Fanta-Sea is a theme park kind of place with the highlight being the Phuket Fanta-Sea Show of which is history themed. You’ll see wild animals with the el-ephants being the star, clowns, Thai-land’s traditional warriors in action.

86 87

Page 45: The Asian Angler - April 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

What About The Angler

Fishing is part of the holiday. There is a fishing pond for you to fish at at the resort or alternatively you could make your way to the beach for some fishing. If you’ve decided to spend more time on Phi Phi Island, there are fishing charter services that offer half day and one day fish-ing trips.

Page 46: The Asian Angler - April 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Many a times when we fish, we need to present the bait or lure to the fish in the quietest possible manner in which distance becomes the lesser priority. Knowing how to do so is extremely important espe-cially in waters of which fishes are easily spooked.

One of these casting methods is to pitch your bait or lure into the fish zone. This casting technique is called “pitching.” The idea of pitching is to get your bait or lure to glide about a feet above the sur-face of the water and end with a quiet entry into the water.

I am assuming as usual that you are already well versed with the use of a baitcasting setup. This technique requires a looser spool control thus your ability to feather and control the spool is important. It is an easy casting technique and that is easy to learn.

Skill Enhancers

Advanced Baitcasting Part IV: Pitching By Philemon Foo

90 91

Page 47: The Asian Angler - April 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

The Mechanics Of Pitching

Imagine a pendulum with a weight tied to a line, hanging from a stick. Pulling the weight to the left or right and letting go will allow the weight to swing to-ward the direct opposite side and back again to where you first pulled it to.

What happens when you lift the stick as the weight is about to swing away from you? Lifting up the stick will gen-erate a higher force due to gravity and thus helping the weight to achieve higher speeds as it swings out. This is somewhat how the pitching technique works.

92 93

Page 48: The Asian Angler - April 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Building Muscle Memory

First of all, remove the hooks from your lure for this exercise or just use a casting plug. I will be using the word lure in this article.

First press down the thumb-bar and al-low the lure to drop. Bring your rod up until it is pointing to the skies (pointing straight up) or at 90 degrees from the land and bring the lure towards you catching it with your free hand. Bring the lure to the same height or level of your reel.

Next lower your rod tip till it reaches about 45 degrees. Now, let your lure go and it will swing like a pendulum. As the lure swings back towards you, grab it with your free hand. Repeat the same thing. Try to feel the weight of the lure as it moves away from you.

94 95

Page 49: The Asian Angler - April 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Now, The Real Thing

Step 1

Press down the thumb-bar and allow the lure to drop. Bring your rod up until it is pointing to the skies (point-ing straight up) or at 90 degrees from the land and bring the lure towards you catching it with your free hand. Bring the lure to the same height or level of your reel.

Step 2

With the lure in your free hand, bring both your hand that is holding the lure and the rod tip down so that its tip is pointing at the horizon. Press down the thumb-bar and prepare for the cast.

Lure is being held in the left hand.

96 97

Page 50: The Asian Angler - April 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Lure moving through the air

98 99

Page 51: The Asian Angler - April 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Step 3

Now we come to the actual cast. Let go of the lure and while you do so bring the rod tip up until you feel the weight of the lure pulling outward is felt, then let go of the spool. This will allow your lure to fly out. Remember to feather the spool.

100 101

Page 52: The Asian Angler - April 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Step 4

As the lure is flying out just main-tain the position of your rod, keep-ing your eyes on the lure. Lower your rod tip as the lure is about to land in the water.

Step 5

Stop the spool with your thumb as the lure touches the water. There you have it. Keep practising and soon you will be pitching like a pro.

102 103

Page 53: The Asian Angler - April 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Give it a try and if you are still unable to do so, send me an email at [email protected] and I will see how best to help you.

Remember, practise, practise, prac-tise.

Cobia: Rachycentron CanadumBy Philemon Foo

106 107

Page 55: The Asian Angler - April 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Those who have battled the mighty cobia will tell you that if you want to build your biceps, back muscles, and forearms; you need not pump iron. Just go one on one with a sizable cobia and you are guaranteed to get a workout.

I have seen rods break, reels de-stroyed, short term lost of the abili-ty to speak, and an angler needing serious first aid all due to a fight with the mighty and unforgiving co-bia. The cobia is not just a power-house of a fish but one that could very well light up a little village. If you think Mike Tyson is tough, you should try taking on a cobia (pound for pound).

108 109

Page 56: The Asian Angler - April 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

The Hangout

Cobias enjoy hangout at structures such as unjangs (fish attracting reefs), structures, buoys, wrecks, and can also be seen accompanying whale sharks as they (whale sharks) cruise around probably in search of plankton (food).

They are found all over our waters, some more than others. Recently they have been playing with anglers in Rompin, stealing baits meant for the sailfish and providing anglers with good and more than sufficient work-out.

110 111

Page 57: The Asian Angler - April 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Taste Buds

Cobias love eating squids, crabs, and a variety of fishes. You don’t hear of them eating greens such as seaweed or grass, yet you also do not hear of them having heart problems, cholesterol problems, or obesity problems. I for one could adopt the cobia’s diet.

Character

Cobias are fearless and would come near boats out of curiosity perhaps. They also tend to swim in groups es-pecially during the mating season (generally a loner) or when they are out spending time with other bigger crea-tures such as turtles, sharks, etc.

They are excellent sports fishes because when you hook one and manage to bring it closer to the boat, you will see a few following your sparring partner. Casting out

112 113

Page 58: The Asian Angler - April 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Ardent Travellers

Like many of our game fishes, cobias love to travel. They travel from one place to another following a certain cur-rent that is of a temperature that they like and thus becomes a seasonal (or migrating) game fish.

Fishing The Cobia

Cobias are caught on a variety of fish-ing methods and the most common would be live bait drifting. Other fish-ing methods include bottom fishing with baits (crabs, prawns, aquids, etc.), jig-ging with metal jigs, and casting lures (hard or soft).

114 115

Page 59: The Asian Angler - April 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Recommended Tackle

Here are some recommended tackle to use should you decide to take on the mighty cobia. Note that these are just my recommendations. More extreme anglers would prefer to go with lighter fishing tackle of which is a lot more fun and chal-lenging. For the rest, these tackles will be good enough.

Live Bait DriftingRods: Medium Heavy to heavy action rod (spin-ning or multiplier type boat rods)Reels: Size 6500 upwards.Lines: Mainlines (braid) 35lb upwards and leaders 40lb upwards.Hooks: Circle hooks (preferred) size 5 to 7.

Jigging for cobia is also a great sport. My recom-mendation is to go with a PE 1-3 rod (PE 1 rod for the more extreme), your favourite lines 30lb sink-ing braid (8 to 10lb lines for the more extreme) with 100% fluorocarbon leaders 30lb (20lb for the more extreme), and your favourite jigs 110g to 150g (light jigs 30g for the more extreme).

Coarse Fishing With The Guv’nor

Pole FloatsText & Photos by Tengku Izzudin

Page 61: The Asian Angler - April 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

In February’s issue we looked at some wagglers. While wagglers are used with a rod and reel and attached to the mainline ‘bottom only’, pole floats are fished with pole and attached ‘top and bot-tom’. This configuration works well with pole floats as it sits right under the pole tip and gives the angler direct control over the float.

Looking at the design, there are significant differences between the waggler float and a pole float. Firstly, a simple waggler will be straight with just an eye, a body and a tip. A pole float consists of a stem, a body, an eye and a bristle.

Plenty of float patterns to fit the occasion!

120 121

Page 62: The Asian Angler - April 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Float materials can differ between manufac-turers and also differ by the use that it was designed for. The body would normally be of balsa while the stem can be carbon, steel wire or plastic. The bristle, being the only visible link between angler and fish, usually painted bright orange or yellow can be made of cane, plastic or even wire. The different materials offer differ-ent amounts of stability and bite sensitivity, and an angler must be knowledgeable enough as to which float to consider given the water condi-tions and the intended prey.

Various pole elastics of different strengths. That crucial link to help you land more fish.

122 123

Page 63: The Asian Angler - April 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

It is no secret that pole fishing is the most popular form of fishing in the UK. A major part for successful pole fishing lies in the pole floats. The pole float is the only visible connection be-tween angler and fish, it registers any bait movement, fish activities around your line and of course, the proper takes and will bury your float under the water!

Pole rigs wound on winders ready to go

124 125

Page 64: The Asian Angler - April 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Many specific designs are produced for specific uses. Teardrop or body down for stillwaters, body up disc floats for running water, dibbers for shallow waters, even spe-cific floats for specific baits, specific fish, specific range of depths and times of year are available!

So say for example you are specifically fishing for carp in 6 feet of stillwater, there is some ripple and glare on the water surface and the carp are taking sweetcorn ‘on-the-drop’, rest assured there is a float for you!

Some of my favourite rigs and patterns. From years of testing on local waters these seem to work best.

126 127

Page 65: The Asian Angler - April 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Pole fishing can be another technical affair. Such minor details are often considered just to get an extra edge and keep the bites coming. From these pole floats the shotting patterns, hooklengths and different presenta-tions can be arranged and customised to suit. But we’ll leave that for another day.

The new Dave Harrell pole floats are my current favourite

A Knot A MonthSponsored by Penn Fishing

Tying good knots is one of the most important things that any an-gler must learn. Certain knots should not be used on braided lines as braided lines are known to cut or damage themselves. Certain types of fishing requires thicker lines and yet smaller knots. There are knots for connecting lines to lines. There are knots for con-necting lines to hooks. There are knots connecting lines to spool. There are knots everywhere in fishing.

While there are many knots that you could use, you will probably stick to your favourites. Anyway, it is good to learn all of them.

The Arbor KnotThe Arbor Knot is used for tying line to the reel and can be used for both baitcast or spinning reels. This knot is suggested for monofilament and fluorocarbon lines. It can also be used for braid-ed superlines or unifilament if the reel is designed with a non-slip braid-ready spool.

Remember braided line is slick and will slip when fighting a fish without a mono backing. So to prevent braid from slipping on non-braid ready spools be sure to tie a monofilament backing to the spool with the Arbor Knot. Fill the spool with several wraps, enough to cover the spool, and then connect the mono backing to the braid with a Uni-to-Uni Knot or Blood Knot. More backing may be required on larger reels.

Knots. Some love em, some hate em. But we anglers, know that there is simply no excuse to not know how to tie knots for our fish-ing expeditions.

I recently came across an app for the Android mobile phone plat-form called “Ultimate Fishing Knots” by VINCZU. You can locate and download it for FREE by firing up the Google Play app, get to Search, and key in “Ultimate Fishing Knots”. Download it and you’re on your way to be the swiftest and most “knot-savvy” angler.

Basically this app teaches you how to make the most popular fish-ing knots. They would be categorized in 4 chapters, namely:

Line | Hook | Misc Knots | Boating KnotsThe screenshots and instructions given are detailed enough for even a newbie like myself to master a particular knot. Looks like this one’s a keeper and is the perfect companion for me during my fishing trips or expeditions.
