Let the Battle Begin™

NEW 2014

PENN BATTLE II SPINNINGImproving A Best Seller

The PENN® Battle® II has been awarded the Best Saltwater Reel Award at the 2014 ICAST show in Orlando, Florida. The voters recognized the PENN Battle II as the top new saltwater reel for 2014 by the select ICAST attendees, which include active editorial journalist and retailers. The popularity of the PENN Battle spinning reel continues to grow as anglers recognize the durability and shability found in this nely crafted reel. Inspired by design innovations made possible through new technology, PENN introduces the improved Battle II.

Included in the improvements is line management. PENN added line capacity rings to let the angler know when the spool is properly lled. This ensures that the casts are not subject to excess line stripping from the spool, resulting in improved castability.

The Battle II has enhanced corrosion resistance due to the improvements of using ve sealed bearings and one anti-reverse bearing.

The Battle II incorporates keyed carbon ber washers in the HT-100™ drag system that utilizes both sides of the drag washers and increases maximum drag by 15 to 50 percent.

Many original Battle features remain in the Battle II, including the full metal body, sideplate and rotor; instant anti-reverse, heavy-duty aluminum bail wire and superline spool.

Eight Battle II spinning reels are oered in 1000 to 8000 sizes. New to the lineup is the 2500 size designed for inshore/light braid applications. Nine Battle II spinning combos are also available for inshore, near shore, boat and surf applications. Each rod is paired and balanced with a Battle II reel and range from 6 feet, 6 inches to 10 feet long in actions from medium-light to heavy. Battle II combo rods include a (inshore) or EVA grip.

All Battle II products will be available in October of 2014.

My fellow anglers and friends,

It has been a very busy month and my apologies for the laterelease of this issue. We are in the process of setting up a newmagazine. No, it will not be a fishing magazine but it will beexciting especially for those who love to travel. In this issuse we tested the Abu Garcia Revo Big Shooter Compact reel, the streamline flying Ofmer Jiggly lure, Shakespeare Ugly Stik Tiger Lite, and many more.We also have a winner for our Junior Angler Short Story Contest with an interesting article on fishing for Peacock Bass.

In this issue we miss out on the Skill Enhancers section as our contributor has gone to the United Kingdom and is not around to complete his article. Anyhow, we will con-tinue with his articles on Coarse Fishing in the next issue.

As I type this, it is a few days to the Royal Pahang Billfish Challenge in Rompin and I would like to wish all the best to those taking part.

Thank you anf happy fishing.

Cheers,PhilEditor In Chief

when it comes to Abu Garcia Revo Big Shooter there is the Big Shooter for everyone else and then there is the souped up Big Shooter Com-pact made for the Japanese Domes-tic Market. They are quite different. It is like one being a rocket and the other being a rocket on steroids. We went crazy with the one on steroids.

ABU GARCIA REVO BIG SHOOTER COMPACTBy Philemon Foo

21

Page 12: The Asian Angler - September 2014 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

For those who like fancy reels the Big Shooter Compact is like the prince of bling. If it had lesser curves and em-blems one can most certainly comb one’s hair using the side plates as mir-rors. They are chromed with a shade darker than the chromed lip up front where the line guide is located.

The aluminium swept power handle is orangey gold in colour of which complements the black star-drag, han-dle knobs, and the reel itself. Put all together there you get a package that speaks the language of power, fame, and rock n roll.

Page 14: The Asian Angler - September 2014 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

The Big Shooter Compact is fast, not Rocket fast, but fast. With an 8.0:1 gear ratio I had to really slow down my re-trieve. I was using a lure that requires slow retrieve and with a fast reel, my cranking hand almost fell asleep. A superb reel for Sebaraus (Hampala macrolepidota) fishing but too fast for toman [giant snakehead (Channa mi-cropeltes)] hunting.

27

Page 15: The Asian Angler - September 2014 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

The Big Shooter Compact cast really well giving me good distances. I paired the Big Shooter Compact to my old Abu Garcia Vendetta rod and set about casting an Ofmer Jiggly lure of which is a superb lure to cast. The satisfaction gained with every cast turned a fishing trip into a casting trip. I was tripping on casting.

The Big Shooter Compact comes with magnetic brakes that are larger of which means more magnetic forces that translates to better control. Cast-ing this reel is easy but of course one still needs a trained thumb.

31

Page 17: The Asian Angler - September 2014 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Although the Big Shooter Compact I had with me was pretty well used, it still felt smooth. The spool rotates smoothly and the cranking is smooth. There is a very slight sound (bearings probably) during the cast. That is ex-pected of a well used reel but still it takes the cake.

Here is one of the things that I really like about this reel. It comes with a clicker. Having a reel without a drag clicker during the battle with a fish is like watching an action movie without sound. Yeah, still action but not as ex-citing.

Drag That clicks

35

Page 19: The Asian Angler - September 2014 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

When it comes to fish fighting perfor-mance the Big Shooter Compact felt smooth all the way up to 12.4lb (5.6kg) and its smoothness started diminishing from here on. As this is a used reel I think it may be higher when new.

pRESSURE tEST

37

Page 20: The Asian Angler - September 2014 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

As for the maximum drag specified, the Big Shooter Compact claims to be 7kg. However, we managed 15lb of which is about 7kg. Again, this is a used reel and it may be higher should it be a new one.

Test Drives

The satisfaction of a cast is when you achieve a good cast and see your lure fly to another country. Well, maybe I am stretching a little here but you catch my drift I am sure. There are lures that cast well and the Ofmer Jiggly 36G gave me a high so good that I enjoyed casting so much and didn’t bother try-ing to catch a fish.

What A Cast

Ofmer Jiggly Lures By Philemon Foo

45

Page 24: The Asian Angler - September 2014 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Weighted Inside

Some lures feel light and at the other spectrum of things, there are lures that feel like a tonne of bricks. The Jiggly is none of those. It doesn’t feel heavy for its size and what it was meant to do, it felt well balanced with weights inside that balances it.

47

Page 25: The Asian Angler - September 2014 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Streamlined Jet Flyer

The Jiggly flies out tail first. It is also streamlined and shoots through the air like a jet flying over vast expanse of water before diving in. This makes casting with my medium heavy action rod (I was toman aka. giant snakehead fishing) a lot of fun.

49

Page 26: The Asian Angler - September 2014 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Scratching An Itch

Many a times we encounter this scene where the tomans (giant snakehead) are always out of reach. We may slowly manoeu-vre our boat closer to them but they seem to move further. While we know what actually is happen-ing, casting to rises that are out of reach although not being able to reach them is like scratching an itch.

51

Page 27: The Asian Angler - September 2014 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Action & Manipulation

While it cast really well, it doesn’t swim crazy. In fact it swims the way a gentlemen walks when he’s walking up to a lady. Way too smooth to make any fish angry and want to go in for the kill. In fact most predators may attack only when hungry as agitation is not part of the Jiggly’s motion.

The best way to fish the Jiggly is to retrieve it slowly. Speed up a little at it swims in a straight line without a wiggle. Slow down the retrieve and it starts wiggling like how a real and healthy fish would).

53

Page 28: The Asian Angler - September 2014 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Sink Is The Thing

To Do

Due to the heavy downpour just as we got our boat onto the water and started to cast, the tomans were lying low. Popping didn’t bring them up. Propeller lures went by unnoticed. Thus a sink-ing lure will have to be used and the Jiggly sinks. At least it reg-istered a hit although it was al-though it did not hookup.

55

Page 29: The Asian Angler - September 2014 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

I like casting the Ofmer Jiggly. It gives that satisfaction of a superb cast and it gives it on every cast. However, it does not have much action and has to be retrieved slowly. Being a soft plastic angler, I am used to slow retrieves, but for hard lure anglers, they may find it less amusing. Anyhow, this will be my lure of choice when I need to achieve distance.

Note: A smooth high performance reel filled with 20lb braid and a good cast-ing rod helped played a part as well.

Shakespeare Ugly Stik Tiger LiteBy Philemon Foo

Shakespeare, a brand that is akin to toughness was at one time a rod many anglers coveted over. Images of it be-ing bent into a “U” adorned magazines. Even Hulk Hogan (champion wrestler) tried to break a Shakespeare rod and failed.

Tigerology

59

Page 31: The Asian Angler - September 2014 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

One of my favourite advertisements is that of Shakespeare rods making a lot of wives angry being indestructible and pulling their husbands away. I too got pulled away recently having to “Test Drive” this Shakespeare Ugly Stik Tiger Lite.

Angry WivesWatch Video at

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xvKHaxHzi8s

61

Page 32: The Asian Angler - September 2014 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

The Shakespeare Ugly Stik Tiger Lite rod comes with a design that is old school Shakespeare. It looks so “those days.” They actually did this on pur-pose. That purpose of keeping it old school is to hold on to its identity of which is indestructibly tough. Unfor-tunately though, a lot of current day anglers are unfamiliar with its past glory especially here in Asia.

Old School Design

63

Page 33: The Asian Angler - September 2014 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

The Tiger Lite is a modernized Shake-speare rod. Shakepeare rod blanks of old were mostly made of fibreglass. These days they’ve gone towards graph-ite as with most modern rods. The Tiger Lite is no exception. Doing so brings down the weight of the rod. The Tiger Lite is no feather but for a boat type of rod, it is quite light.

Modernized Shakespeare

65

Page 34: The Asian Angler - September 2014 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

The Tiger Lite rod comes with Fuji double-foot stainless steel guides with aluminium oxide inserts and graphite Fuji reel seats. These quality proven Fuji components do indeed add value to the Tiger Lite rod plus the added confidence to one’s fishing trip.

Fuji Fans Be Delighted

67

Page 35: The Asian Angler - September 2014 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

The guys at Shakespeare designed the handle with comfort in mind. Called the “Ugly Tuff,” the EVA handle feels comfortable to hold and is contoured in such a way that provides for a com-fortable and confident grip. The rod also comes with a gimbal for slaying giants.

Comfortable Handles

69

Page 36: The Asian Angler - September 2014 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

We all want more power and the Tiger Lite delivers. We decided to test them out by battling some Mekong Catfishes at a commercial fishing pond in Hulu Langat, Malaysia (a small town off Kuala Lumpur).

Good Amounts Of

Power

71

Page 37: The Asian Angler - September 2014 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Bottom fishing with dough is some-thing that I don’t often do and thus casting dough bait the size of tennis balls with the Tiger Lite rod needed some getting used to. After a few casts I was shooting out rockets of dough eas-ily covering good distances.

Casting Ability

73

Page 38: The Asian Angler - September 2014 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

When it comes to the actual battle, the Tiger Lite is no “lite” weight fighter. It packs a powerful punch with strong recoil, revelation of a powerful back-bone. All of the anglers that tested the Shakespeare Ugly Stik Tiger Lite like its power. Landing big (15kg upwards) Mekong catfishes was easier than ex-pected.

Power Play

A very good rod for bottom fishing and also a good boat rod as long as you do not have to hold on to it for the dura-tion of your fishing. Lots of power and will take on brutes easy. Down side, its design may not appeal to new anglers.

VFOX Kuroshio VD-5064 Lure CaseBy Philemon Foo

VFOX is carving itself a niche with quality bags, tackle protection cases, and tackle management cases. One interesting product is the VFOX Kuro-shio VD-5064 Lure Management Case made for squid lures and I have taken a liking to this.

81

Page 42: The Asian Angler - September 2014 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

The VFOX Kuroshio VD-5064 case looks like an add-on case bicycle en-thusiast latch on to their bikes. Except that the VFOX Kuroshio VD-5064 case can be latched on to a host of things from belts, tackle boxes, to even parts of cars, boats, etc.

Convenient Carrier

83

Page 43: The Asian Angler - September 2014 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

It comes with a carabineer for latch-ing on to things as well as a sleeve (not sure what to call it) of which a belt can slide through should one want to wear it with one’s belt the way we wear mo-bile phone pouches.

Carabineer Of Ease

85

Page 44: The Asian Angler - September 2014 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

While the VFOX Kuroshio VD-5064 case is made for squid lures or jigs, it can be used for fishing lures such as plastic lures, metal jigs, as well as spoons. It comes with ten slots to hold these lures in place. Some may argue that it only fits ten lures and that is not much. But most of the time we bring a whole bunch of lures but use only a few favourite ones. Do you agree?

Good Lure Management

87

Page 45: The Asian Angler - September 2014 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

The case opens up to two sections with five slots on each side being separated by a thick clear plastic sheet. The lures are made to hold the weight of squid lures, jigs, spoons, and as for plastic lures they can be secured in place by securing the hooks to the piece of thick foam.

That’s How It Works

89

Page 46: The Asian Angler - September 2014 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

The case is made of hard foam and is water resistant. Even the zipper is sealed in a way that minimizes water entry. It will be able to take on light splashes of water keeping the inside relatively dry. It is not waterproof and water can seep in via the area at the bottom of the case that is sealed with-out resistant material.

Protection In Mind

91

Page 47: The Asian Angler - September 2014 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Okay, what’s the point of having it sit-ting pretty in the office? We took it on a fishing trip with intentions of abus-ing it mildly. We are not going to drive over it, hit it with parangs, jump on it, or burn it.

We decided to place lures inside and intentionally drop it overboard whilst fishing on a lake. Fair? We secured it to a fishing line, threw it overboard and into a lake for about 5 minutes while we fish just to see what happens.

Field Testing

93

Page 48: The Asian Angler - September 2014 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

One good thing we found out about the VFOX Kuroshio VD-5064 case is that it floats. Being made of buoyant material allows it to float relatively well. Should it drop into a lake, a pond, or should it fall into the sea, chances of retrieving it and saving your lures are really good.

The Case That Floats

95

Page 49: The Asian Angler - September 2014 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Even after being thrown overboard the lures that were placed inside remained in place. It should since we had them secured by hooking them to the foam inside. However, water did enter the case but should this be a real accident, I would be happy getting my lures back even if they were drowning inside the case.

Lures Still In Place

97

Page 50: The Asian Angler - September 2014 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

The VFOX Kuroshio VD-5064 Lure Management Case is a good compan-ion. It allows my lures to sit well inside and it floats, which means that in case it accidentally falls overboard I chances of saving my lures are relatively high. It is also convenient to carry.

Trinity Saltwater Treble Hooks Part IIBy Philemon Foo

Test Drives

Last issue we tested the Trinity Salt-water Treble Hooks SCC+CP model. It did well being sharp and remaining rust free after spending slightly over 24 hours in saltwater. Being classified as a saltwater hook we wanted to see how long it will last in saltwater before rust turns up.

103

Page 53: The Asian Angler - September 2014 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

The Amazing

We placed it in a bottle of saltwater on 1st August at exactly 10:12pm and left it in the bottle checking it every day for rust. We know that all steel will rust in time even high grade stainless steel. So how long did it take before rust set it?

105

Page 54: The Asian Angler - September 2014 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Way Over Ten

We noticed some rust at the area where the stem of the hooks are fused to-gether on the 11th of August at exactly 5:33pm. It survived over 10 days in salt-water before succumbing to rust. That is amazing.

107

Page 55: The Asian Angler - September 2014 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Rustless Points

The hook points remain rust free. This means that you could have it sitting out at sea for over 10 days and should a fish decided to use take the hook for weird and ghastly reasons you would have a very good chance of hooking it up.

109

Page 56: The Asian Angler - September 2014 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Verdict

Amazing hook this is and it does live up to its classification being a saltwater grade hook.

Introducin’

VFOX Light StickBy Philemon Foo

It has been a long time since I did any form of bottom fishing with the exception of jigging baitfish with an Apollo rig. Re-cently of a holiday + work sort of a trip to one of the great lakes situated in the Ma-laysian Peninsular, I did some leisurely + bottom fishing.

113

Page 58: The Asian Angler - September 2014 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Night Fishing

Being in the jungle on a river where fishing is rampant, with fishes holding multiple PhDs; we had to do our fishing in total stealth mode of which means extremely low lights, extreme quietness, and with little movements. There was a light to attract small fishes at the bot-tom of our floating platform and that was it.

115

Page 59: The Asian Angler - September 2014 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Light Stick In Action

With the need to be quieter than an ant... the game plan was to cast out our live baits, walk back onto the main area of the floating chalet, sit tight, and ob-serve our rod tips. Our only indication of a fish bite is the VFOX Light Sticks that were secured to our rod tips.

117

Page 60: The Asian Angler - September 2014 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Dancing Lights

Every now and then the light stick placed at the rod tips would do a sort of a dance indicating that the baitfish attached to our hooks were feeling pan-icky. From a distance we were enter-tained with this little light show until one took a dip and it was game on.

119

Introducin’

Kawasemi Fishing Hooks By Philemon Foo

There are a lot of fishing hook brands out there and amongst them are the Kawasemi Fishing Hooks that are made in Japan. The thing about fishing hooks is that they are very important and can mean catching or losing the fish.

123

Page 63: The Asian Angler - September 2014 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Sharpness Test

Being sharp is essential when it comes to hooks as a blunt hook can only play the role of a teaser to both fish and an-gler. There are a few to test the sharp-ness of a hook. One way is to run it on one’s finger nails and if it catches, the hook is considered sharp.

125

Page 64: The Asian Angler - September 2014 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Plastic Spoon Test

Here in our lab we do the sharpness test using plastic spoons as fingernails are a bit too easy for hooks to latch on to. The Kawasemi Fishing Hooks proved themselves to be sharp latching on the the plastic spoon and holding on to it on its point.

127

Page 65: The Asian Angler - September 2014 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Verdict

The Kawasemi Fishing Hooks are qual-ity hooks that are sharp and will give you good hook-ups.

Knowledge WiseUnderstanding Fishing Rods Part 16Rod BackboneBy Philemon Foo

Here is something that all fishing rods have, a backbone. So what is a backbone? A backbone is the spine of a rod that sup-ports the rod. Hence it is important to ensure that the rod is built right (custom or off the shelves) and learning to locate the backbone of a rod will be a plus when purchasing a rod.

131

Page 67: The Asian Angler - September 2014 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

A backbone of a rod is created in several ways during the blank construction process. Rod blanks are made using sheets of graphite (and fibreglass for fibreglass rods). These sheets are then cut into shape and rolled into a long cylin-drical and tapered tube we know of as the rod blank.

How Did It Come About?

133

Page 68: The Asian Angler - September 2014 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

There is a section of this tube that is thicker or stronger such as the section where there is an overlap-ping of both ends of the sheet form-ing a more rigid side. Sometimes additional sheets are placed at cer-tain areas to tweak the characteris-tics of the rod. These areas become more rigid and thus a backbone is created.

135

Page 69: The Asian Angler - September 2014 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

We know that all rods have a back-bone. The backbone of a rod also determines the power zone of a rod. The power zone can be de-fined as the length of which the power of the rod is felt that begins at the butt section and tappers off at the tip section where the rod bends (not at the end of the tip).

Backbone Power Zone

137

Page 70: The Asian Angler - September 2014 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

What’s more important is the place-ment of the rod’s accessories such as guides in relation to the back-bone of the rod. A well aligned rod (accessories and backbone) will ensure that the rod has a more ef-ficient use of power which will help with your casting and during the battle with a fish.

Efficient Use Of Power

139

Page 71: The Asian Angler - September 2014 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Here is a little secret you can bring along with you when you shop for a fishing rod. After identifying the rod that you intend to buy, the next thing is to ensure that the rod is well aligned. To do that you first need to locate the backbone of the rod. For Illustration purpose we will use a spinning rod.

Hunt For The

Backbone

141

Page 72: The Asian Angler - September 2014 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

To do so, ensure that the butt sec-tion (rear grip) is cylindrical which means that it can roll smoothly on a flat surface. Next place the butt on the surface at an angle of about 45 degrees. Support the rod tip section with one hand placed at about 25% from the tip (towards the end of the rod’s power zone).

Angle The Rod

143

Page 73: The Asian Angler - September 2014 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Next place your other hand on the blank nearer the fore grip of the rod. Do not hold as you will need to roll the blank the way one will roll clay or dough into a cylindrical shape.

Step 2

145

Page 74: The Asian Angler - September 2014 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Gently bend the rod slightly by pushing down with your hand that is supporting the rod at the butt sec-tion (near the fore grip) and roll the blank slowly. You will feel some-thing like a “pop.” On a spinning rod the guides should now be facing upwards. The spine or backbone of the rod is at the opposite side of the where the guides are placed.

Step 3

147

Page 75: The Asian Angler - September 2014 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

When it comes to choosing a bait-casting rod, do note that the guides should be facing downwards which means that they are placed on the backbone. The reason for this is that the guide placement on casting rods and spinning rods are on the opposite sides of the rod blank.

Opposite For Casting Rods

149

Page 76: The Asian Angler - September 2014 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

There you go a little tip that will help you with your next rod purchase. However, it will not be nice to prac-tise what you have learnt here on every rod you come across. Thus our recommendation is to use it only on rods that you have decided to purchase but want to ensure that you pick the best one.

Get Your Kids FishingAn Initiative By The Asian Angler Magazine

Fishing is a very healthy sport. As anglers we enjoy fresh air, we experience nature, we improve our analytical skills, we absorb vitamins from the sun, we expend our minds, we learn about the environment, etc.

There are so many benefits to fishing and we should reduce our kids addiction to video games, computer games, playing with mobile devices, etc. We should get them to interact more with our environment and teach them a thing or two about life and living life.

With this in mind we hope to encourage you to take your kid(s) fishing and have dedicated a sec-tion of our magazine to Junior Anglers.

Soft Plastic AdventuresBy Amirul Irfan

Soft plastics are versatile baits. The realistic feel of a soft plastic gets fish fooled .I like soft plastics so much because they have some kind of sentimental value to me. When I was a kid, I would follow my dad bass fishing in the eve-nings. We would use all kinds of soft plastics ranging from creature baits to grubs.I caught my first fish,a largemouth bass on a grub soft plastic with a simple cast and retrieve method .

155

Page 79: The Asian Angler - September 2014 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

It has been 13 years since that very moment , and I can confirm that I am hooked for life . My favourite soft plastics are from the Berkley Powerbait collection of soft plastics .The scent is great and they have great action .There are many ways to fish them ac-cording to their types .In most occasions ,a slow retrieve with pauses can produce fish.

157

Page 80: The Asian Angler - September 2014 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

My dad’s colleague, Mr.Zairi with a nice little flower horn on a grub soft plastic. It was a fun quick ses-sion of fishing, despite the cold weather after a few hours of rain. We caught 2-3 fish each on soft plastics. Hard plastic lures pro-duced nothing.

159

Page 81: The Asian Angler - September 2014 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

The Berkley Powerbait T-Tail Minnow is one of my favourites. Snakeheads like them, and other species like them too. After I made a cast, I let it sink to the bottom. When I started my re-trieve I felt some weight and this redmonk surfaced. 2 huge tilapias also had a go at the T-Tail Min-now, but they were smart enough to avoid the hook.

161

Page 82: The Asian Angler - September 2014 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

I have a cousin who likes to fish after work. Almost every evening he will send some pictures of his catches. Most of the fish he has caught are on Berkley Powerbaits. In the picture above, the fish was caught with a 3’’ Berkley Pow-ergrub.

163

Page 83: The Asian Angler - September 2014 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Here’s a snakehead pinned on the Berk-ley Powerbait T-Tail minnow. The pad-dling tail combined with the great pow-erbait scent triggers bites when other baits don’t seem to produce. The Berkley Powergrub is also a good bait for snake-head hunting. A few days ago I missed a hit from a snakehead in heavy cover. I fished a Berkley Powergrub fast on the surface, to imitate a lizard or prey trying to get away.

165

Page 84: The Asian Angler - September 2014 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

That’s me taking a look at the bass that my dad’s friend caught. One of the moments I’ll never forget.

167

Page 85: The Asian Angler - September 2014 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

This packet of Berkley Powerbait Kasumi Craw looks great, feels great, and brings back good memo-ries. Berkley Powerbait has proven to be successful for me and now Berkley has introduced a new line of baits, BerkleyFlex. If only I could get my hands on the new Berkley Flex…

Peacock Bass FishingName: Muhammad Arif s/o Gulshah Ali

IC No.: S9919673D

Age: 15

It was a hot and blistering day, My uncle and I were fishing for hours with no bites and to make our fishing worst, it started to rain. We retreated to a nearby bus stop to wear our disposable rain-coats. After wearing them on, we were excited hoping for a fish at least at that spot.

We cast our lures out and on my first cast I started getting hits but they were not taking it hard, frustrated I kept try-ing until it stopped raining. Feeling down with no fish landed we continue our fishing by moving spots. When we reached the spot, I cast a soft plastic paddle tail out. That cast landed me my personal best peacock bass in Singapore. After releasing the beauty we continued fishing for an hour.

August 2014 Winner: Congratulations

173

Page 88: The Asian Angler - September 2014 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

We moved further up the reservoir and being a very lucky guy, I landed another peacock bass which broke my record again! The take was so good that I lost balance and fell but the rush it gave me was great!

175

Page 89: The Asian Angler - September 2014 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Right after I released my new re-cord beauty, we stayed at that spot for a few more minutes as we were running out of day light, and guess what? I landed another peacock bass which broke my record again! That day was one of the best days fishing I ever had.

Thank you! This is my greatest ex-perience I had ever had going for the illusive peacock bass!
