San Francisco Bay Area realty investors to plead guilty to bidrigging, mail fraud

mainly to suppress and restrain com-petition and conceal payoffs in orderto obtain certain real estate offered atthe auctions.

The investors were also charged withconspiracies to use the mail to carryout a fraudulent scheme to make pay-offs to obtain title for certain proper-ties, as well as to receive payoffs anddivert money to co-conspirators, thedepartment said.

The conspiracy took place over variouslengths of time between November2008 and January 2011, the depart-ment said.

Three of the investors participated inthe conspiracy in San Francisco. An-derson, Kent and three other investorswere involved in San Mateo County, the Justice Department said.

The Justice Department noted thatwhen real estate is sold at a foreclo-sure auction, the proceeds are used topay off the mortgage and other debt at-tached to the property. The remainingproceeds, if any exist, are paid to the

    homeowner.

Several Bay Area real estate investorshave agreed to plead guilty for conspir-ing to rig bids and commit mail fraud atforeclosure auctions, the U.S. Depart-

ment of Justice said. The investors named include SiliconValley residents Gary Anderson ofSaratoga and Troy Kent of San Mateo.

The government said six other peopleplan to plead guilty: Patrick Campion ofSan Francisco; James Doherty of Hills-borough; Keith Goodman of San Fran-cisco; Craig Lipton of San Francisco;Henry Pessah of Burlingame; and Laith

Salma of San Francisco.Charges were filed against the eight in-vestors in U.S. District Court for theNorthern District of California, the de-partment said.

According to the charges, the investorsconspired to rig bids by agreeing notbid against each other at public fore clo-sure auctions in San Francisco and SanMateo counties. According to the de-

    partment, the in vestors conspired

. . .DressThe film, in which RobertMitchum starred alongside Mon-roe, follows the fortunes of agunslinger released from jail and

trying to start a new life with his10-year-old son.

It's production was marred byconflict between the director,Otto Preminger, and Monroe'sacting coach, Natasha Lytess, who insisted the blonde bomb-shell enunciate every single syl-lable of the script with

    exaggerated emphasis.

Preminger's experience on thefilm convinced him he neverwanted to work for a studioagain, and he left for Europe be-fore the post-production wascomplete.

    The film received a lukewarm

reception from the critics, who inthe main agreed that the bestthing about it was Monroe'sscreen presence.

Bosely Crowther wrote of it inthe New York Times: 'The rafttumbling through these rapids isquite a sight to see. And layoutsof Rocky Mountain landscapesare handsome in color, too.

'But Mr. Mitchum's and the audi-ence's attention is directed toMiss Monroe through frequentand liberal posing of her in fulland significant views

Among other items that weresold at the auction were thebustier that Madonna wore dur-ing her 'Who's That Girl' tour in1987. It has sold for $72,000.

The famous white dress Monroewore in 'The Seven Year Itch'was sold for $4.6 million at anauction this summer.

Original 1942 Jerry Robinson artwork fromDetective Comics #67 goes to auctionAuction News

The original 1942 Jerry Robinson art-work from Detective Comics #67, oneof the earliest Batman covers still

known to exist consigned by the leg-endary Golden Age artist himself isbeing offered for the very first time atauction and is expected to bring$300,000+ when it comes across theblock on Nov. 15as part of Her-itage AuctionsVintage Comics& Comic Art Sig-nature(r) Auc-tion in Beverly

    Hills.

The cover art isone of threeTreasures fromthe RobinsonCollection beingoffered in theauction, all ofwhich havebeen tuckedaway in Jerry

    Robinsons per-sonal collectionfor almost 70years.

The amazingD e t e c t i v eComics #67 art-work is a classic piece of Pop Culture, representing the very first Batmancomic to feature Supervillain The Pen-guin on its cover. On it, Penguin rides

an ostrich as he flees the DynamicDuo, mocking their seemingly fruitlesspursuit as he bolts.

Robinson penciled and inked thiscover and the detail of his art is amaz-ing close-up, said Todd Hignite, Con-signment Director for Comic Art atHeritage, particularly his shading lineson Batman and Robin, and on thefeathery details of the ostrich beingstraddled by that bird-of-prey, the Pen-

guin. This Golden Age masterpieceranks right up there with the best ofthem!

The other two treasures from The JerryRobinson Collection offered here alsorepresent some of the greatest originalGolden Age cover art, and Golden Agenames, that Heritage has ever offered:the legendary duo Jack Kirby and Joe

Simons Adventure Comics #73 Man-hunter Cover Original Art, DC, 1942(Estimate: $150,000+) and Fred Rays

    Action Comics #46 Superman Cover

Original Art, DC, 1942 (Esti-mate:$100,000+), one of the few earlySuperman covers that has surfacedand an absolute classic.

Robinson isone of the mostinfluential fig-ures in the car-toon arts toever live. As amember of the

original Bat-man team hewas responsi-ble for the firstand most iconicof all supervil-lains, the Joker, and co-createdRobin, the ar-chetypal side-kick.

From the earli-est days of theGolden Age ofcomic books,Robinson cre-ated characterssuch as Lon-

don, Atoman and Jet Scott, saidJaster, and worked in many genres notably editorial cartooning, newspa-per strips and illustration. In his otherinfluential careers Robinson has been

a features syndicate founder, teacher, curator and champion of artists rights.

Among Robinsons 30 published worksis The Comics: An Illustrated History ofComic Strip Art (Dark Horse), a defini-tive study of the genre. His other booksinclude the biography Skippy andPercy Crosby (Holt), The 1970s: BestPolitical Cartoons of the Decade (Mc-Graw Hill), and most recently a two-volume set of his 1950s sci-fi strip, Jet

Scott (Dark Horse). The biographyJerry Robinson: Ambassador ofComics (Abrams) was published in2010. Robinsons numerous honors in-clude the National Cartoonists SocietyMilton Caniff Lifetime Achievement
