First United Methodist Messenger Rockingham, NC
A Message From Dr. Allison Farrah
Dear Church Family, I count it all joy to have served as your Assistant Pastor for the last nine years. You have become an extension of my family and I love each of you. You have helped mold and shape me as a minister and as a person, and I will be forever grateful. Thank you for the impact you have had on my life and on Mary Catherine’s life as well. You have helped “raise” her and in you we have both seen the love of Christ exemplified time and time again. It is with heartfelt thanks that I let you know how much your prayers and support have meant to me over the past three years as I pursued my Doctor of Ministry. The Doctor of Ministry project is in-tended to address a need or opportunity in the church where one serves—and that it has done. God has worked through this project to bring forth transformation in and among us through short-term, cross-cultural missions. I would love to share my completed project with you and will place a copy in our church library before I leave. Above all else, this degree is dedicated to God in hopes that Kingdom work will continue to unfold as a result of it. Thank you for every card, gift, prayer, and word of encouragement upon my graduation in May and my upcoming transition. You ALL are a blessing to me! I am especially grateful for the love offering and beautiful reception given in my honor. The décor was elegant, the food was delicious, and the fellowship was the best. Thank you also to the FUMC staff for the beautiful flowers on the occasion of my graduation and birthday. You too are an incredible blessing in my life. In closing, I share with you ALL these words of the Apostle Paul. Please know that you will always hold a special place in my heart. I thank my God every time I remember you, constantly praying with joy in every one of my prayers for all of you, because of your sharing the gospel from the first day until now. I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work among you will bring it to completion by the day of Jesus Christ. Philippians 1:3-6

William Ralph (or Rolf) Featherstone lived with his family in
Montreal. They attended the Wesleyan Methodist Church
there. Some publications list his years of birth and death as
1842-1870, others 1846-1873. In either case, he died while
still a young man in his twenties.
Featherstone wrote the hymn My Jesus, I Love Thee when he
was 16 years old, likely at the time of his conversion. He sent
a copy to his aunt in California, and it was she who suggested
he have it published. Reportedly, his descendants still treasure
the original manuscript of the hymn written in a boyish hand.
New Messaging System
The new phone messaging system has been a long job to set up and is nearly complete! Every-one should get a call the week of August 8th. PLEASE LISTEN TO THE MESSAGE CAREFULLY! You will have to opt in to the service in order to receive messages. We hope once this service is up and running correctly we will have better ser-vice with it than the current phone tree.
A special THANK YOU to Tabatha Miller and the nursery volunteers who care for our children each week. Your loving
care makes a difference in the lives of our precious little lambs.

Dear First United Methodist Church: I greatly appreciated your devotion to my mother. She was so frustrated that she was unable to attend church these last few years. I am well aware of the times members of the church and the ministers visited her at home. Thank you so much for helping me to remember aspects about her when she was younger. Thanks for your partici-pation in her funeral. She would have loved the funeral. It was a beautiful sunny day. The song added so much. The speeches and comments were so personalized and right on target. She would have loved the ducklings parading in and out of the lake. The food was delicious and allowed the family to stay at home—the best place. Appreciatively yours, Lee Baxley
Dear Church Family,
Thank you for honoring the 2016 graduates with a deli-cious breakfast and beautiful gift on Youth/Graduation Sunday. I know the UMM and UMW made this possible. I will always cherish the personalized cross that you gave me. It will go with me to college as a reminder of the love and support that FUMC has shown me through the years. You have helped raise me and I will always look to FUMC, Rockingham as my “home” church, no matter where the road may lead in the future. I love you and thank God for you!
Love, Mary Catherine Coltrane
Dear Rev. Sykes, Dr. Farrah, Mrs. Griffith:
Thank you so much for all you and the church did for me dur-ing graduation! I will forever remember you and this church. I feel so blessed for being able to be in your youth group!
Love, Martin Zigovsky
Dear Church Family:
Thank you so much for the wooden cross that you gave me as a special graduation gift! It means so much to me and I love the scripture and message engraved. I will definitely take it with me to college at UNCW and put it in my dorm room. I appreciate all of your generosity and thoughtfulness more than you know!
Thank you all so much for showing me what love and fellow-ship for Christ is all about! You are all in my thoughts and prayers.
Sincerely, Michael Saunders

Haiti Update
The 2016 Haiti Mission Team would like to thank you for your love, support, prayers, and participation in this year’s mission project. Words are inadequate to describe our time in Haiti except that we will not give up on this mission to which we have been called. We had a remarkable team of 30 who worked together with patience, perseverance, and flexibility. We had the opportunity to touch the lives of over 400 children throughout the week through VBS, and they touched our lives even more. We learned more about the country and new ways we can make a difference. We were introduced to a goat pro-ject called A KIDD FOR A KID and look forward to becoming involved with this project in the future. This project focuses on sustainability for families and education for children. We reunited with Haitian friends and met new ones. Thanks to your participation in the Hoofing It for Haiti 5K and the Christ-mas honorariums and memorials (as well as other donations), we purchased, bagged and delivered tons of food including rice, beans, oil, spaghetti, sardines, cereal, and juice. We used every one of the 555 rice and bean bags made by our Quilting for the Community group. We also distributed all of the hand-made items you made and the many items you donated. We experienced powerful times of worship and devotion. We laughed, cried, experienced exhaustion and renewal! Through it all, we witnessed the hand of God molding and shaping our lives and the lives of those we embraced. To God we give all praise and glory for the great things he has done. Thank you again for joining us on the journey!

First United Methodist Crucifers and Acolytes This is an important part of our Worship Service. The Crucifer brings in the Cross to remind us of God’s presence. Jesus died on the cross but has been raised from the dead. He is with us here and now.
When the Acolytes bring the light into the sanctuary, they are reminding us that God is with us and when they take the light out, it reminds us that as we scatter out into the world, God’s light shines on us and He is with us.
This is an important part of our Worship Service and we would like to invite ALL 3rd—12th graders to be a part of our Service. Please call the church office if you are interested in serving as Crucifer and Acolyte.
Pilgrimage 2016 is a God centered event for youth and adult leaders sponsored by the NCCUMC. Pilgrimage is held at the Crown Coliseum in Fayetteville, NC on November 11- 13, 2016. Cost of the trip is $95.00. You must RSVP with deposit money of $45.00 by September 11 to reserve your spot—there are only 25 spots—so register early!! All money must be paid by October 31.
Redeemed: Created in Christ for Good Things! “For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.” (Eph. 2:10, NLT)
Vacation Bible School with FUMC, FPC, and FBC was a HUGE SUCCESS!!!
Thank you to all who prayed, sent snacks/supplies, volunteered, and participated in Surf Shack Vacation Bible School. We had a great week with all our children and adults. For our VBS mission project, the children collected sunglasses and beach balls for the children in Haiti. The children collected 121 pairs of sunglasses, 173 beach balls, a box of 80 markers, 39 pairs of decorative flip-flops made by the older children in crafts, and $76.50 in offering to buy supplies needed for our Haiti Mission Team. Our Mission Team was able to give children their own sunglasses, flip flops, and beach ball while they were in Haiti. (See pictures with the Haiti Update.) We are very excited how all the children wanted to share God’s love!
Remember that the Lord is great and awesome! Nehemiah 4:14

Covered Dish Lunch on August 28
Plan now to attend the church-wide covered dish lunch following worship on Aug. 28th. This will be Allison’s last Sunday at FUMC so it will be a good time for us to share a meal together. Our love and prayers go with Allison as she discerns God’s call to new places of minis-try. Mark your calendar, bring a dish, and enjoy the Fellowship together.
