August 2016: Summer Newsletter Augusta, GeorgiaDear Augusta Chapter members,

I hope all of you have had a wonderful sum-mer. My time at Continental Congress was even better this year because I was able to share it with my daughter Katherine. Our Amy Lawson’s selection as National Finalist in the Outstanding Junior Contest was icing on the cake.

I am deeply honored to serve as your regent for the next two years. Our State Regent, Joyce Ball Patton, has selected the motto: “Our Traditions Direct Our Paths In Service To God, Home, And Country”. The Augusta Chapter will certainly respect that commit-ment as we celebrate our 125th Anniversary February 20, 2017. Our Historian Daphne Hopson will be spotlighting chapter history in our newsletter.

Our new President General, Ann Turner Dil-lon, has selected the motto “Moving Forward in Service to America.” We, as a chapter, have excellent traditions and services to build upon. Coming soon will be our Constitution Week Celebration and the Veterans’ Day Ser-vice Lunch. The Augusta Chapter has served our community well with these events and we will continue to do so.

We also want to embrace the future. We will be having exciting opportunities to sup-port junior members and promote women’s health.

The Junior Tea:Many of our ladies came to the annual Junior Tea that celebrates the State Outstanding Chapter Regent and the State Outstanding Junior. This year it was our own Junior, Amy Pittman Lawson, that was the State Outstanding Junior. We were so proud of her accomplishments that we had a record number of attendees at the tea!

This was a wonderful time for our Chapter at such a huge party celebrating what the women of the DAR have accomplished over the last hundred and twenty-five years. We look forward to service for “God, Home and Country” so that the next big celebration of our organization will be on par, if not succeed this celebration!

Independence Day at Meadow Garden:Col. William Few Chapter, SAR teamed up with the Augusta Chapter to bring Meadow to Life with the Living History Park of North Augusta. May visitors were able to hear the Constitution being read from the steps as we celebrated our Nation’s Independence.

Summer Workshops:This Summer’s Workshops were held in four dif-ferent locations: Athens, Marietta, Moultrie, and Warner Robins. Many members and associate members attended to learn about the different chairmanships, genealogy, regent training, and treasurer training that was available. If you didn’t get a chance to attend the workshops, you can al-ways contact your state chairmen for information. We hope you all will be able to attend next year.

Native American HistoryNative American Olympians: feel the spirit of their strength! The 2016 Summer Olympic Games, officially known as the Games of the XXXI Olympiad, was where the world had come together this year to celebrate the art of physical strength, combat, and perseverance. With the United States participation in every mod-ern games, with the exception of 1980, our history of Native American Olympians is one that is celebrated. According to Indian Country Today Media Network.com, there have been a total of seven Native Olympic Athletes since 1912 that have competed for the United States.1 – Jim Thorpe, of the Sac and Fox, was the great-est athlete of all time. He won gold in the decathlon and pentathlon at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics. He helped organize an All-Indian NFL team, the Oorang Indians in the 1920’s.2 – Louis Tewanima, of the Hopi Nation, won the silver in the 1912 Stockholm Olympics as a team-mate of Thorpe. Tewanima’s medal was the best by an American in the 10,000 meter event until Mills beat it. Tewanima ran in both the 1908 and the 1912 Olympic

marathon races. 3 – Billy Mills (Oglala Lakota) had the most impact and influence in the modern era, winning the 10,000 meters in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, becoming only the second Native to win Olympic Gold.4 – Frank Mount Pleasant, Tuscarora from Buffalo, New York, as a chief ’s son he was sent to boarding schools and ended up at Carlisle. He was the first Carlisle student to qualify for the Olympic team, com-peting in 1904 and 1908 in the long jump and triple jump. 5 - Ben Nighthorse Campbell, of the Northern Chey-enne Nation, was born in California where he learned judo from Japanese friends, and he said the sport kept him out of trouble. He served in the Air Force during the Korean War, kept studying judo from Korean instructors and earned a brown belt. He won a gold medal at the Pan American Games in 1963 and then became captain of the U.S. Olympic Judo team at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. 6 – Rickie Fowler, of the Navajo Nation, was one

of four American golfers at the Rio Olympics this year, where golf has returned as an Olympic sport after 112 years. Fowler won the Abu Dhabi Championship in January and was ranked as high as #4 worldwide. He was the num-ber one ranked amateur for several months in 2007-2008.7 – Ashton Locklear, of the Lumbee Tribe, is serving as an alternate for the U.S. Women’s Gymnastic Team which won gold for the Team Competition in Rio on Au-gust 9. Locklear was on the U.S. Team which won gold at the 2014 World Artistic Gym-nastics Championships.

Augusta Chapter, NSDAR / August 2016 7Spotlight on Augusta Chapter HistoryCelebrating Augusta’s 125th!

Constitution Week in 1974 As the Augusta Chapter looks to it’s Consti-tution Week Celebration this September, we are reminded by an article in The Augusta Chronicle that this is a time honored tradition. Currently the Augusta Chapter Celebrates the event with the community in mind, and the article explains that this service to the community is a tradition we have had for a while. The article from Sunday, September 15, 1974 speaks about how the Augusta Chapter, DAR along with the North Augusta Chapter, DAR and both CAR chapters celebrate Constitution Week with the play “We the People.” The play was pre-sented at Fairview Presbyterian Church and high-lighted scenes of the Constitutional Convention. The Daughters made the costumes and helped with transforming the actors into the men of the Continental Congress. Later on in the evening the Chapter celebrated with a speech by Rev. Randy Pollard of Trinity-On-The-Hill Methodist Church. As we celebrate Constitution Week this year the Augusta Chapter can also celebrate 125 years to “God, Home and Country” by continuing to bring the community together to celebrate Consti-tution Week and honor Georgia Signer Col. Wil-liam Few.
