co This year saw the introduction of two new awards as part of the ABPA Book Design Awards: theW. D. Joynt Award for the best designed paperback and 'The Australian' Award for the best jacket design of the year. The Joyce Nicholson Award for the best designed book of the year, the Weldon Hardie Young Designer's Award and the ABPA- Andrew Fabinyi Award for the best book designed for instructional purposes all were continued. The Committee is grateful for the generosity shown by the donors of these awards which help to make the competition so prestigious and raise the standard of design within the industry.

While the books have been awarded prizes within categories, it should be noted that all books were considered for 'The Australian' Award for the best jacket design of the year and the Joyce Nicholson Award for the best designed book of the year.

The Committee was disappointed in the number of educational titles entered, and does not believe, as is commonly held, that educational titles could never win the major awards. However, it does feel that children's books are difficult to judge together with other titles and that they should have a separate award in the future.

The Committee would like to thank the judges for this year who worked so conscientiously throughout a long day, and the ABPA Secretariat, especially Sue Blackwell.

The judges for this year's ABPA Book Design Awards were: Joel Becker, bookseller and library supplier; Garth Boomer, educationist; Sandra Hall, writer and literary editor; Sandra Forbes, publishing administrator; and Sharyn Storrier, designer and art director.

It was a well- balanced judging panel and every effort was made by the judges to keep in mind that every type of book has its own design problems. Ours was certainly not a panel swayed simply by the 'beautiful book'.

When it came to the initial 'long short list', there was remarkable unanimity of opinion among panel members. There was certainly total unanimity about the winner. We believe that this is the first time that the same book has won both best designed book and best jacket design of the year.

The judges expressed disappointment on two counts. First, that the standard of entries for the Young Designer's Award was not higher; and second, that not enough books were entered in the instructional (educational) book category. It was noted on the first count that probably none of the books commended in the Young Designer's category would have made it in the open field. On the second count, it was noted that some memorably well-designed educational books published during 1985 had not been entered at all.

In the paperback category, on the other hand, it was agreed that there was overall a high standard of design and presentation. Unfortunately, however, one book initially chosen by the judges as a likely winner in this category was revealed on close examination to have been originally published in hardback during the previous year, with exactly the same design; this, it was agreed, rendered the book ineligible for the paperback prize. The judges recommended some tightening of the guidelines for this new category in the future.

The Committee's guidelines for the judges were in all other respects most helpful. The judges would like to thank Sally Milner and her Committee, and the staff of the ABPA for - first - inviting them to judge this interesting award and - second - for organising a long day most efficiently, and for the excellent lunch. The Publisher's Association is to be complimented on the continuation of these long-established awards, now in their 34th year.

The winning books, with brief comments from the judges on the major prizewinners, are presented and illustrated in this catalogue.

The May Gibbs Collection (Volumes I & II) While retaining the classic feel of the original, the designer has succeeded remarkably in giving new, fresh life to previously published material. The integration of photographs, black and white drawings and colour drawings is particularly skilful; the clear open typeface, the use of graphics in the pagination, the creamy paper and the admirably restrained endpapers are all consistent with the traditional perception of May Gibbs' works and are to be commended. The design of the slipcase is excellent. The texture makes the reader want to pick it up and see what is inside. This is a quality from which other designers of slipcases and boxed sets can learn. This book also won the award for Best Jacket Design, and was unanimous choice by the judging panel as Best Designed Book of the Year.

Judges' comments for best designed book of the year {above) also contain comment on jacket design. The slipcase design is restrained; the well-known motifs are well integrated into the design; and the gold lettering is strong. The jackets of both volumes also make extremely attractive use of the graphic material. The whole production has, in the words of one judge, 'a good warm feel'.

An extremely elegant example of book design. The use of the poet's signature in the title design is commended, as is the imaginative and skilfully handled integration of passages of handwriting into the pri nted text. The jacket and case design are both of a very high standard.

Great attention has been paid to the details and the result is workmanlike. The treatment of archival, often poor quality photographs is very good in the book. The use of borders to help to 'define' the photographs is to be commended. Working with what was presumedly a moderate budget, the designer produced a relatively well-shaped local history.

An excellent example of paperback design which,

although it is bulky, avoids the unwieldy feel of

many large paperbacks. Inside, the integration of text

and illustration is very well handled. The jacket is striking but not flamboyant.
