Background to the research
2
What did we want to find out in this research? The overall purpose of this research is to help with thedevelopment of the Having A Baby pages on the Money AdviceService website, and specifically: Develop distinct personas for new mums in relation to
gathering information on finances Review current headings on the baby journey and test new
content ideas Explore reactions to the current tools for new mums Determine reactions to three writing style of content and
identify which is the most popular
3
Who did we speak to?
All must not use an IFA/financial adviser for money advice All must use online sources for information and have online access Fieldwork 16th February to 9th March 2015 in Crawley, Brighton, Reading and
across the UK in the online forum

Q. How good at budgetingand knowing what money iscoming in and going out
For most mums, having a baby means growingup themselves and getting more organised andresponsible with money
Whether working or not the women is often incontrol of the day to day budget of the house, with responsibility to make money go as far aspossible
Often one person in the partnership is moreprepared and organised
The women who participated in the online panelwere recruited online and therefore have a higherpropensity to search for information online andcontribute to forums etc. because they are morecomfortable with this source
The online forum
5
Baby journey personas3 personas of expectant/new mums in terms ofgathering information on finances
6
Developing the ‘mums’ personas The personas have been developed from the qualitative research
group, depths and online forum with expectant and new mums The following personas focus primarily on the ‘mums’ propensity
to plan ahead and gather information
Persona 1: Laura’s baby journey…has life planned out
Persona 2: Paula’s baby journey…planning starts when pregnant
Persona 3: Becky’s baby journey….better off with baby
is based on mums who haven’t done much baby specific planning untilthey are pregnant but once the baby is on the way they are eager to gatheras much information as possible. This is the majority of mums
Is based on mums who are natural planners, who have most aspects oftheir life planned out and having a baby is just the next project. Thesemums are in the minority
Is based on mums who receive income and housing benefits once theyhave had a baby. Much of the pregnancy is spent sorting out theiraccommodation and benefits, but they also want to plan for the baby buton very limited budgets
7
Profile: Mainly planned pregnancies Researches most things Enjoys budgeting Already considered childcare Cleared debts/sorted
finances/right accommodationbefore getting pregnant
Saved to cover maternity evenbefore pregnant
Lots of research into having ababy, best pram etc.
Happy to share information onforums
Laura’s baby journey…has life planned out
My husband does say I’veplanned the next 20 years of our
livesLaura
Well I always had a budgetspreadsheet and before I even gotpregnant I worked out whether ornot I could afford to have a childAnd I’ve also worked out, this is
even more sad, when I go back towork how much my childcare is
going to cost and how that’s goingto affect us long term
Laura
I have always been quitefinancially savvy. I have a
spreadsheet for my outgoings, notthat there is a lot left after two lots
of maternity leaveLaura

Needs from the baby journey
Before pregnancy During pregnancy 1st baby Subsequent babies
Laura’s key needs through the journey
My partner is the onlyone who works so Ihave become "chief"
when it comes tomoney - all money
comes into me and Imake sure bills and
outgoings are paid andthat we have enough
We were pretty organised withnappies and wipes etc with
our first baby, but organisationseems to have gone out thewindow since number two
came along! ha ha!
I have software that I use tobudget my expenses so I amusually quite good with mymoney but I have no idea
how much more expensive itwill be having a baby
I looked at online forums to see whatother women bought for their childand how much it roughly costs to
have a baby, but it looks likeeveryone has a different opinion and
priority
So when they wereborn we opened a trustfund for them and setup a standing order sothat money was going
in each month
10
Profile: Baby may be planned or surprise
but made little financial provisionin advance
Try to cut back and save whilepregnant
Unlikely to have made budgetbut knows they would benefitfrom doing so
Once pregnant eager to researchinto having a baby, equipment, costs etc.
Reads forums but doesn’tcontribute
Paula’s baby journey…planning starts when pregnant
I started a new job and just before Iwas suppose to start I found out Iwas pregnant so I'm not entitled topay from my employer. I have to
apply for it myselfPaula
I've never made budgets for thehousehold, and having a baby has
not changed that. My husband and Istill have separate bank accounts;
both current and for savings. We arehowever more money conscious
than beforePaula
I am mum to a four week old baby boy. Ididn't plan on getting pregnant but my
partner and I talked about children a lot.Unfortunately this turned out not to be true
on his side and I am now a single mum. I amnot skilled in budgeting and actually find it
quite a scary topic which I often avoidPaula
11
Paula’s key needs through the journey
Key needs:•May have organisedhouse, work etc. butlittle thought forplanning financiallyspecifically forhaving baby
Key needs:•Baby timelinehelps as planningonce pregnant
•Cost saving tipsand budgetcalculator ascutting back tosave before babyarrives
•Women alsoresearchingpaternity leave forpartner
•Hunger forinformation whenpregnant but maynot realise there ishelp with financesfor mums
Key needs:•Childcarecalculator as maynot have organisedbefore birth
•Baby savingsaccounts
Before pregnancy During pregnancy 1st baby Subsequent babies
Key needs:•Maybe moreorganised as knowwhat is coming
•Hard to savebetweenpregnancy
•Need help withbudgeting andmoney saving asbudgets tighter
12
Paula’s key needs through the journey
Before pregnancy During pregnancy 1st baby Subsequent babies
We are saving for thehouse not a baby but whenshe came along that extramoney has really helped
We didn’t plananything before I gotpregnant. We wanted
to see if it wouldhappen
This is my second child soit’s not too much of a
shock to the system! Wehad prepared much better
the second time roundhowever it is still not easy.I put away a little bit each
month from my already lowmaternity pay towards thelast three months where
no money will be received
My husband asked aboutpaternity leave at workbut they didn’t tell himmuch and he just left it
I have more money sincebecoming pregnant as I am not
going out as much. This hasbeen great for putting cash
aside and in preparing for thebaby. My partner and I haveset a goal amount to ensure
we achieve that amount beforethe baby is born
13
Becky’s baby journey….better off with baby
Profile: On very low wage or benefits before baby On benefits now
If working and renting before feel better off(rent is paid)
If working and living at home before feelworse off
If on benefits before feel better off
Experience of raising children from familyand friends, so less online research
Listen to the midwife but may not attendclasses or act on advice. Rely a lot onfamily support
Benefits do not come until baby born,so can’t make budget changesbeforehand
The three of us live off £100for two weeks. How do I
budget? I only buy dinnersfor me and don’t each lunch
Becky
I went to car boot sales andgot most of the baby stuff. Ididn’t get a grant because I
was working at the timeBecky
14
Becky’s key needs through the journey
Key needs:•Need help butgenerally nopreparation
•Hasn’t managedtheir moneysensibly prior topregnancy
•May have debts
Key needs:•Not good atplanning, timelinepopular
•Not the baby costcalculator, oftenbuying second hand, seems tooaspirational
•Focused on sortingaccommodation andbenefits
•Do not get fullbenefits until baby isborn so difficult tobudget in advance
Key needs:•Not childcarecalculator as costsseem too high tomake workingworthwhile or willuse family
•May view budget astoo limited to usetool
•Advice onmaintenance asfather often onbenefits too orabsent
Before pregnancy During pregnancy 1st baby Subsequent babies
Key needs:•Budget tools if canbe persuaded touse
• Implications ofgoing back to workon benefits
15
I used to lookafter my
brother’s kidsso I know about
kids
I got this flat just beforethe baby arrived, before
that I was in a hostel
When I worked I got£1,200, now it’s £600 but Idon’t have rent to pay, so Ihave more money to spend
Becky’s key needs
I had one budgeting lessonfrom the council to make sure I
pay my rent to the privatelandlord but I’m 28. I know
what I need to do
I don’t get a pennyfrom the dad
When you have a babythe Government takes
over from you
My family nursehelped with a
budget sheet butdidn’t give any
advice onbenefits
Before pregnancy During pregnancy 1st baby Subsequent babies
Now I have thetwo of them I’mtrying to get abigger flat. I’veonly just foundout how you do
that
16
Awareness of the Money Advice ServiceAwareness and likelihood to use the website
17
Among mums awareness of the Money Advice Service islimited
2 aware via bounty pack1 had used for information
on debts
My friends were talking about tax credits, sowhen I was given the MAS leaflet in my
Bounty pack I went online to have a look. Ididn’t take in that it covers all this other stuff
Laura
I was diverted to them via a link. It tellyou everything about debts and charities.
I went on there to find out if I could getout of paying back a QuickQuid loan
Becky
Even when they have used the website on specific issuesthey were not aware of the variety of other information andtools available
18
Use of the Money Advice Service would be higher ifmums knew information available Among the rest some have heard of
Money Advice Service or morefrequently Ask Ma, but onlyassociate it with people havingfinancial problems
Most unaware of Money AdviceService as a source of informationto help expectant and new mumsmanage their money
This is a generation who ‘Googleeverything’ and if they search fore.g. money and new mums theMoney Advice Service site is top ofthe search list
However, lack of awareness thatthis type of information is availableor even needed so most would noteven think to search for somethinglike this
But if they are open foreveryone they’re not really
saying that in their promotionPaula
I realise things aregoing to be tight, just
don’t need to have it inblack and white
Paula
The latest advert where the littleboy comes in and she says “pickup your shoes” and talks aboutgoing on a holiday, so I thought
they did advice for sort ofworking families that were
struggling a bit but before thatadvert I thought it was more forpeople that had got themselves
into trouble with money thatneeded, a bit like Citizen’s
AdvicePaula
19
Use of websites & forumsPreferred sites for new mums
20
This generation of mums are used to researchingeverything online Most new mums ‘Google’ everything they want to know
The online forum mums are already high users of websites Those living on benefits have phones with internet access and rely on
them for information. Using sites such as Emma’s diary, andMumsnet
Bounty packs are still a popular source of information. Twomums recalled the Money Advice Service leaflet in their packs
Forums are popular to read, though those not on the onlineforum are unlikely to contribute They are useful for researching more sensitive issues like
maintenance with baby’s father or being a single mum
21
What they said
I don’t like forums for medical things, because you can become obsessed
with children’s illnesses and it messeswith your head
Laura
I tend to ask my mum or a friendwith kids, and while I am talkingto them I Google to see if what
they say matches upBecky
Babycentre - it comes up when you search on Googleand I find their information really useful. Emma's Diary
- I went on the more when I was pregnant than nowbaby is born but I loved the week by week
development of baby Leaky B@@B - Is an oddwebsite but I enjoy reading the articles and information
on there as I breastfeed my babyLaura
Netmums: i like this site as it gives real lifeexamples and advice from other mums. Itgives practical steps and processes whichcan help you in whichever situation you arein. I like actually hearing what other mums
recommendedPaula
22
What do new mums want to know? The questions new mums want answers to
23
New mums’ questions are mostly covered by MAS, althoughsignposting to other parts of the site would be helpfulBefore showing any suggestions from MAS new mums were asked whatquestions they really want answers to. These questions have beengrouped into the key topics and listed in order by frequency of mention
•Savings accounts•Maternity leave/benefits - what maternitytake home pay will actually be?
•Cost of having baby•Tax credits•How to save while pregnant•Child benefit•Getting the best deals on baby equipment•Tax issues•Budgeting•Paying for childcare•Managing mortgage on maternity leave•Life insurance•Benefits for the self-employed•Money saving•Other state benefits by income level•Child maintenance
A full list of questions is appended to this report

The key suggestions notcurrently available were:A tool to calculate take
home pay when onmaternity leave, takingaccount of tax, carallowance and employercontributions, tax credits
A guide on what benefitspeople are entitled to byincome levels
24
What they said
I need to know what I would actuallytake home when I was on maternityleave. My accounts person at work
helped me but if you didn’t have that itwould be good to have a calculator
Laura
People will tell you what you’re entitled toin terms of maternity pay but no one gives
you any guidelines on what you’reactually going to take home, that’s theproblem. I’d like a calculator for this
Paula
My friend did that and she savedlike £200 a month by changing hermortgage, which meant she could
have 4 months longer off onmaternity
Paula
Benefits online, anything like thatwell confuses me. One of the
helpers where I volunteered helpme work out what benefits I could
get. I needed help with thatBecky
25
Current information on the baby journeyReactions to the Having A Baby landing pages
26
The landing page is not drawing mums into the wealth ofinformation available
Mums shown MAS landing pages Not expecting to find information forparents on the site
Strong negative reaction to linkingbirths and deaths
Does not suggest the nature ofinformation it covers
Sounds very official and impliesregistration of birth rather thanactual information provided
I would look at that page andprobably go straight off that
website and onto one that just hada section about having a baby
Laura
I hate how they put birth anddeath in the same place
Paula
You would think you wouldneed to register for it
Becky
27
‘Having a baby’ is a clear heading but is still listed withnegative life events
Mums shown Having A Baby landing pages
Having a baby much betterheadingMaternity/Paternity should not be a
separate heading Should not be in same list as deaths
and divorce or if necessary shouldbe at the top so it goes in order oflife events
And the thing starting a family orhaving a family could be separate
because deaths and wills andthings and divorce and separationsort of puts a black cloud over it
Paula
It looks easy. Somewebsites are well
complicatedBecky
Now I’m separated I would look atthe divorce bit but having a babyshouldn’t be in there with death
and willsLaura
28
Reorganising the informationReactions to the current list of headings and suggested revisions
29
The most popular headings are on benefits, cutting costsand the cost of childcare

30
Overall preference is for the medium length list with itsclustered headings
Originallist
Middlelength
Shortestlist
Overall preference
Paula’s prefer the middle size lists. They are focused on cutting costs, budgeting and entitlements once
they are pregnant
Laura’s are more likely to like longerlists because they want detail and
want to see the range of informationavailable but complain of therepetition in the original list
Becky’s prefer the shortest list andare primarily focused on benefits
entitlement, cost saving andmaintenance from partners
31
This list is too long and repetitive
Most said the list was too long and repetitive,it was hard to digest and see where they needto go
Dads commented that it comes across as a listfor mums rather than parents, thoughadmitted mums are more likely to do anyresearch
The information on stillborn babies isupsetting and not something people will lookat when browsing. This could be movedsomewhere more discrete and effectedfamilies could be directed by midwives
Free and cheap baby products is always apopular heading because all mums arelooking for ways to save money. This is whatdraws them to sites like Money Saving Expert
32
What they said
I think the titles are toodescriptive, so ‘financial support ifyour child has a disability’ could
just be disability allowanceLaura
There is too muchgoing on there
Paula
I think a more general top heading andthen clustering these really specific
topics under that so they’re easier toread in the first place… Especially when
you’re pregnant and you’re tired andyou just want to get information
Paula
So you may have one laterthat’s cost of a baby or
somethingEveryone’s costs are different, people shop at Waitrose and
people shop at LidlPaula
The title about still births, Ithink as someone who ispregnant it is very scary
Paula
It is aimed at women, it is all from afemale perspective. I want to know
about paternity leave, insurance andwhat help would I get if anything
happened to my wifeDad
I would have left this page. There is too much, it is too
smallBecky
I remember thinking it is quitedaunting when I looked on the site.It covers so many topics it makes
you worry about other thingsLaura
33
This is a compromise between the original list and theshortest list
Those that chose it thought it has theright balance of detail and preferred theway the headings are worded
The option was particular popular withthose on the online forum, but shows nopattern by age or social class
It is straight to the point you know whatyou are getting. You get everything. Withthe short list you would click on a headingand there would be a list of 5 more things
underneath itPaula
It is good but could be cutdown even more
Becky
I can’t read a lot of big words. This is easier to understand
than the long listBecky
34
The short concise list is also popular
Mums like the way the headings aregrouped
It is the easiest to read and digest, thoughthose that prefer the medium list thoughtsome headings are missing
I definitely like the shortest list. It isshorter and covers everything. It isless overwhelming as I think you
should read everythingLaura
The ones I would click on areat the top together. You don’thave to go through the ones
you don’t wantBecky
35
Alternative suggestions were made based on life stage, targeting dads and benefits based on income
Alternative suggestions for structure: Life stage Information to be organised by life stage, so can click
on for example, 1st time mum returning to work or single parentetc. and be told everything that applies to this audience
Target dads Dads complained the pages are set up for women, and they would like to see a page dedicated to dads coveringpaternity leave, insurance and other issues of concern to dads
Benefits by income level Benefits cause confusion for those whohave never been entitled before. Outline what people are entitledto by income levels
36
Reactions to current tools for parentsFeedback on the baby cost calculator, childcare calculator andbaby timeline
37
Those on the online forum are mostly very positive aboutthe Baby cost calculator
Mums on the online forum tendto be better at using online tools
and budgeting
Veryuseful
Quiteuseful
Not veryuseful
As part of the online forum the new mums were askedto tick and cross what they like on the Baby costcalculator. These views have been amalgamated
Q. How useful is the baby cost calculator
The online forum
I like the estimation of the costs. I like thatyou can say whether its breast or bottle
etc. and that you can include items or not(if you already have them) I think it isreally straightforward and easy to use
Paula
38
Offline reactions to the Baby cost calculator are more mixed
What I did was go on the Mothercarewebsite, there’s a list you can downloadof what’s essential, what’s nice etc. so Idid this but in a very long-winded way. Itdidn’t help me to budget because I didn’t
have a clue what it was going to costLaura
Majority looking for a list ofwhat is needed, some love
the calculator others happy tocalculate costs themselves
This would havebeen helpful. I
never knew thingslike this existed
Paula
Those with smaller budgetscan find it depressing to see
the costs but won’t be putoff having a baby
I find this off-putting butfinding out the cost
wouldn’t stop us fromhaving the baby and wewould rather just get onwith things and not know
Paula
It is about how much I’mprepared to spend rather thanhow much it costs. I make it
work for my budgetBecky
Those on benefits did notsee the relevance as theyare often buying secondhand or hand me downs
The nurse gave me a paperversion but an app that addsit up would be good. But the
prices seem high on thisBecky
39
The cost of childcare calculator is also deemed useful bythe majority of the online forum
Mums generally found it useful, though some already have family
help etc

Q. How useful is the childcare calculator?
This doesn't take in to accountsibling discounts? How using taxcredits might change these costs?
Laura
As part of the online forum the new mums were askedto tick and cross what they like on the childcarecalculator. These views have been amalgamated
40
Offline the mums liked this idea but could not see thevalue of the childcare calculator for themQuite a few mums already
know their preferredoption for childcare andare not swayed by cost
Costs of nurseries/childminders can vary
greatly locally so thisonly gives a guide
Does not include costs forlunches, activities etc.which add to the cost
Costs are seen asprohibitive for those on
benefits, who will mostlyhave to rely on family
It is expensive!Becky The text is small and
not as visuallyappealing as other
toolsIt doesn’t seem to take intoaccount childcare vouchersof free nursery hours
Does it take into accountchildcare vouchers? I
would like it tooLaura
The costs vary greatly betweennurseries, even locally

Q. How useful is the childcarecalculator?
I like the fact that they tell you briefly aboutthe dental care and then give you theoption to view more details instead ofbombarding with loads of information

The layout is goodyou can keep the
dates on your phoneBecky
They like that this informationcan be transferred to
smartphone/diaries
If you can apply forsomething 11 weeks before
or 16 weeks it would be goodto know exactly when
Laura
It is helpful to have acentral source of what
needs to be done
The layout iswell received
Mums who have notplanned the pregnancyneed help knowingwhat to do when
I had a rubbishmidwife who gave noadvice. I didn’t really
know what to doBecky
2nd+ time mums mayfind it useful as theyhave less time to focuson what they need to do
It would have been usefulsecond time around because
you forget what you need to doLaura
Reaction to the baby money timeline is positive offline too
It’s all about gettingorganised whenyou’re having a
babyPaula
Helps mums getorganised at a timewhen they feel they
have to grow up andput finances in order

Clear overall preference for Working for yourself
Working for yourselfComes across as fact rather than opinion Tells you want you want to know Easier to read even though it is longer Easier to skim and pick relevant factsDoes not contain unpopular suggestions
e.g. putting children in front of TV whileworking
Actually tells you what you need to do inany situation
Workingfor
yourself
Emma'sstory
Alison'sstory
Overall preference
45
It’s her opinion of her liferather than advice. I’d preferthe facts. It doesn’t actually
tell you how to do itBecky’
Alison’s story is viewed as just opinion and most struggleto see the relevance
Comes across as opinionrather than advice
Suggestion of puttingkids in front of TV isunpopular
I wouldn’t put my kids in frontof the TV. You should be doing
activities with your childrenBecky’
I think at the end of this one it didhave a little bit a quote that kind offinished it off which was nice. It’s
nice to see a personal story but forme, I’d want the information and
looking at Alison’s story doesn’t tellme what I need to know
Laura
Does not give theinformation they want
The tone also seemed to imply itwas bad to go back to work, which isn’t a choice for many
I hated it. she was like “oh Isimply didn’t want to go backto work and miss those first 3years” well no one does but
we do and we have toPaula’
It is from a woman’sperspective so dadswould not read I would not even read
this as it is from awoman’s view
Dads
Unrealistic exampleto go from accounts
to cleaning
46
Emma’s story received a similar negative reaction, but wasconsidered more realistic
The case study is toospecific and they cannot see how it appliesto them
This just leaves you withmore questions than it
answersBecky’
You’re not there to read astory. It’s not saying “look Istarted my own business
doing this, this is how I wentabout it, this is what I neededto do to set it up. This is the
research I did”Laura
Some preferred this casestudy to Alison’s story butthey can’t immediately see
how this applies to them
Many struggled to seethe point of readingthe case studies I didn’t really understand
why we were reading thecase studies
Paula
Emma seen as luckyto work for a company
that allows her tofreelance, which isn’t
realistic for many
Not everyone has aboss like that
Paula
We could have got thisinfo in a lot less words. Idon’t need her opinion,
just the factsBecky’
It seems to imply it is badto go back to work but Idon’t have the choice
Laura
47
Working for yourself was the most popular format, givingclear guidance rather than opinion
Style is easier to skimdigest and see whatthey need to do
It is not too long ifyou need to know the
informationBecky
Text too long but mightread all of it if needed the
information
Even though there areway more words you
can skim it quicker as ithas headings
Becky’
I like the pros and consPaula
Text is more universaland could apply to
anyone’s circumstance
I like it because it is moreuniversal. It could apply to
anyoneDads
I can’t be bothered toread all this, it is for
working mumsBecky
Most prefer that it isfacts rather thanopinion
Don’t bother with thecase studies, they are
trying to encourage youto start up a business
which is too riskyLaura

Recommendations
Raise awareness of financial information for new mums, so peopleknow it is there to found on internet searches
Ensure the pages work for dads too Use the shortest or medium list Use fact based information, like Working for yourself
Raise awareness of MAS as source not just for those in debt Change landing page so easier to find information Devise a tool for take home pay during maternity leave Use the shortest list or medium list Make childcare tool take account of childcare vouchers, lunches etc. Use fact based information, like Working for yourself
Promote MAS via midwives, job centre etc. and Internet searches Revise baby budgeting tool to work for those on really low incomes Promote ability to put timeline on phone calendar Use the shortest list Use fact base information, like Working for yourself
