The Alumni Association Travel Committee Is Pleased to Present: The Baltic’s Amber Coast Aboard Sea Cloud II,

A Unique Learning Experience with Peter MacKeith, Associate Professor of Architecture and Adjunct Associate Curator of Architecture and Design

Join Washington University in St. Louis Alumni, Parents and Friends as we explore the Baltic’s Amber Coast on a glorious midsummer cruise. Sailing from Copenhagen to St. Petersburg, we will visit the Baltic capitals, where examples of medieval and Art Nouveau architecture remain nearly untouched by the early 21st century. Our voyage also includes the vibrant Scandinavian capitals of Stockholm and Helsinki.

Our journey will be enhanced by the insights of Washington University’s own Peter MacKeith, Associate Professor of Architecture and Adjunct Associate Curator of Architecture and Design at the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Art. Receiving a Fulbright Fellowship to Finland in 1990 for research on the work of Alvar Aalto, Professor MacKeith subsequently worked in the office of Juhani Pallasmaa and taught at the Helsinki University of Technology School of Architecture. Mr. MacKeith has lectured and written widely on Finnish and Nordic architecture. He was Curator of the Nordic Pavilion at the 2012 Venice Biennale of Architecture and was honored as Knight, First Class, of the Order of the Lion of Finland. Also joining us will be Ellenor Alcorn, an Associate Curator in the Department of European Sculpture and Decorative Arts at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Timothy Colton, Professor of Government and Russian Studies at Harvard. (The Met Museum, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and the alumni association of Harvard University have joined Washington University in sponsoring this program.)

Sea Cloud II: A World-Class Experience in Luxury TravelIn Copenhagen, we embark the magnificent sailing yacht Sea Cloud II. Her friendly staff, luxurious accommodations and fine dining create an onboard ambiance of relaxed elegance. Her spacious decks provide the ideal setting to reflect upon our fascinating days, as we watch her crew practice the age-old art of setting the sails by hand.

Our Fantastic Journey Our first stop is a brief visit to the charming island of Christiansø. Continue to Vilnius, Lithuania, and experience its medieval Old Town. Drive to Latvia to see Riga’s Art Nouveau architecture. Crossing the Baltic to the island of Gotland, we step ashore at the fortified town of Visby. We’ll navigate the islands of Swedish archipelagos to Stockholm, where we remain pier-side overnight. Our itinerary includes the walled city of Tallinn and the vibrant maritime capital of Helsinki. Our sea voyage concludes when we disembark in St. Petersburg.

An optional two-night prelude is offered in Copenhagen, where there will be time to explore the city on your own. An optional postlude is offered in St. Petersburg, where highlights include specially arranged before-hours tours of both the Hermitage and Catherine’s Palace, with its meticulously recreated Amber Room, as well as a White Nights Festival performance.

Is Travel with Washington University Really Different? Absolutely — and far beyond the participation of Professor Peter MacKeith, this extraordinary voyage includes an array of exclusive content. As our group will be kept to a reasonable size to ensure your comfort, space is limited. We encourage you to give this invitation your special attention. We know you will treasure the chance to share this remark-able journey in the congenial company of travelers with similar appreciations and interests.
