IT’S HAPPENING AGAIN:

ANNUAL BARTON BIKE NIGHT –

WEDNESDAY, 6th

JULY, 2011 - 5 to 10pm

The voluntary members of the committee are well

underway in organising one of the biggest Bike Nights in

Europe – Barton‘s own amazing and unique annual

community event, based on the same successful format as

in previous years with visitors attending from around the

country and overseas.

We have funding from Barton Town Council and our

main commercial sponsor is Lindsey Relay Euronics. We

thank and welcome them together with The Wheatsheaf

Pub, and D. Farr Electrical, as well as marshalling from

Barton Lions, Rotary, and local residents. Several of the

local pubs will have live bands playing to keep you and

our visitors entertained with the town‘s array of food

outlets once again well stocked and open late to take

advantage of the welcome influx of visitors and revenue.

The comprehensive Management and Safety plan for the

night, produced by specialist company Eventsafe of

Lincoln which will take care of all the safety issues for

the event, has been submitted to North Lincolnshire

Council Public Safety Group for approval, along with the

application for the town centre road closure to the

Highways department. St. John Ambulance will once

again be taking care of all First Aid issues.

North Lincolnshire Classic MC are providing some live

action, staging the very popular Trials Display in the

Cottage Lane car park along with static displays from

LPE Kawasaki Motocross and many trade stands selling

motorcycle related products around the town.

The High Street will host a Custom Bike Show organised

by Barton‘s own chopper builder Shaun Barley. Around

the corner for this year the Queen Street area has been

extended to accommodate more classic/vintage bikes and

includes the Victorian Wilderspin National School open

for visitors and providing extra space for motorcycles and

crash helmet parking. The Town Mayor will be judging

and presenting the trophy for Best Classic Bike in the

show. Lifelong motorcycle enthusiasts and great

supporters of the event, John & Lesley Andrews, will be

looking after the Vintage MC Club and Classic bike

visitors as well as showing several of their own

motorcycles.

Once again the organisers are expecting the town to be

full of all types and makes of bikes from Sports, Tourers,

Custom, Cruisers, Trikes, Scooters down to the odd

strange looking vehicle which the event seems to attract

each year.

Ducati UK will be bringing their Road Show and about

12 ride out bikes, St. Leger Harley Davidson, Honda,

Quads, Clothing and various food stalls.

We are looking forward to a great night so please come

along and enjoy this free Community Event run by

volunteers in our town.

Performance in the Park 2011

Live children’s theatre at its best can be found once again in Baysgarth Park this summer thanks to the town’s

Tourism Partnership.

Undoubtedly the highlight of the three performances will be the return of Illyria with another Roald Dahl classic,

Fantastic Mr Fox.

Who can forget last year’s Illyria’s performance of James and the Giant Peach? This year, on Sunday August 21, Illyria will be telling the tale of Fantastic Mr Fox who pits his wits against three farmers. Even though you might

have seen the blockbuster film what better way to spend a summer’s afternoon with a picnic enjoying live theatre which is suitable for those aged five years and over!

The first event is on Sunday, July 17, with The Storytellers Theatre Company performing the traditional fairy tale, Hansel and Gretel.

This fabulous production contains everything – music, song and drama –with a comic slant and children will surely be entertained at the sight of the children’s mother with her vast circumference of 200 inches and their rather short sighted father.

Bash Street Theatre returns to the Park with its performance of Cliffhanger on Sunday August 14.

With falling buildings, dare-devil escapology, slap-stick humour and live piano accompaniment, CLIFFHANGER! is a 50-minute long, silent-movie style production that returns to the golden age of the silver screen. Inspired by Buster Keaton’s short film ‘Convict 13’, it follows the fortunes of a love-sick café waiter as he becomes innocently embroiled

in a prison escape.

All the performances begin at 2pm and all are free although donations are welcome.

The Performance in the Park season is supported by Barton Town Council, South Humber Collection and Barton Lions. Bring along a chair, a picnic and enjoy live performance in the beautiful surroundings of the park.

Unauthorised signs are a hazard In Barton there are a number of locations where unauthorised signs are displayed on a regular basis. Not only do these signs make the town look untidy but they also pose a distraction and compromise road safety. Working with Barton Town Council, North Lincolnshire Council wishes to discourage the placement of such signage and would make the following statement:- It is illegal to put any sign, posters, banners or advertising boards on the highway which have not been authorised by North Lincolnshire Council. The Council has a policy to remove unauthorised signs from the roadside in accordance with Section 132 of the Highways Act and will do so if they are considered to be a potential hazard to highway users, a hazardous distraction or are obstructing the highway or visibility. The Highway Authority also has discretionary powers under the Highways Act 1980 to prosecute offenders. If you wish to report a sign, poster, banner or advertising board which you consider may be unauthorised, please contact North Lincolnshire Council Highways on 01724 297000.

Garden Talk

Having been watching Chelsea Flower Show, the overall colour

trend seems to be green. We

don’t usually try to follow the trend, but it would appear that this year we may well be doing so. I think by the time

our Wells next the Sea garden is due to open at the end of

June, most of the flowers will have gone over. Sadly we

don’t have large cold stores to keep our plants in like the Chelsea designers. Perhaps the brown lawn will catch on.

We have taken a leaf out of the Chelsea designers’ book when it comes to our tropical border. Having lost and had

several large plants cut back by the frost, we have used

plants in pots sunk into the soil. (Most plants at Chelsea

are in pots covered with compost or other medium to make them appear to be planted). We will then be able to move

the plants back under cover for winter. Baskets designed

for pond plants are ideal for sinking in the ground and lifting later in the year. They allow plants access to

moisture from the surrounding soil. You can also plant

them up with spring bulbs in the autumn and use them to

fill in any gaps in the border in the spring.

Each year we try and grow something different; this year

we are growing Sweet Potatoes ‘Beauregard’. They need warmth to develop so some are being grown in the

greenhouse border, others outside are planted through

black plastic, which will hopefully keep the soil warm. They are tuberous climbers, so will need a framework to

climb up. We are also growing Okra for the first time,

which is a member of the Mallow family. The leaves and

new shoots can be eaten fresh when picked young and tender and the unripe seed pods can also be used in the

same way.

For the last few years we have grown potatoes on the same

site, this is of course contrary to most advice which is normally to rotate crops. We found that potatoes did well,

and I believe that may be due to a build up of beneficial

mycorrhizae. These are beneficial soil fungi that have a

symbiotic relationship with the plant roots. However we decided to plant our seed potatoes in a different area this

year. We are growing ‘Axora’ and ‘Sarpo Mira’. They

were planted a bit late but my neighbour’s potatoes were cut back by an unexpected frost, ours have now caught up

and are doing well. The area where the potatoes were

grown previously was seeded with grass, unfortunately the

lack of rain has prevented most of it from germinating, the pigeons have enjoyed it though.

There is still time to sow a few dwarf and runner beans, hopefully they will crop before we have frost. Salad crops

can continue to be sown, we have been successive sowing

‘cut and come again’ mixed lettuce, which has performed well. However we have had to cover it with fleece

otherwise the pigeons would help themselves.

The flowering plant of the year was voted for during Chelsea, with a compact Anemone with white flowers and

a blue reverse to the petals narrowly winning. Saxifrage ‘

Annette Hope’ came second, with it’s clouds of white flowers. Third was Verbascum ‘Blue Lagoon’ which is a

new colour break. All these plants seem worth growing

and I look forward to seeing them become popular.

Art at the hub 2011 Exhibition

CHAMP (Community Heritage Arts and Media

Project) is delighted to announce the opening of an exciting new Art exhibition this summer. Art

at the hub 2011 will feature art work by

professional and amateur artists, including many from the local area. The theme for this year’s

exhibition is ‘The Natural World.’ Previous events Art in the Park and Art at St Peters have proved

to be very popular.

The newly refurbished hub on Maltby Lane will provide an excellent venue for this year’s

exhibition. Art at the hub 2011 will be open to

the public from Sunday 21st August to Sunday 28th August. CHAMP hopes to engage the support

of the local community throughout this unique event.

A Gleeful Experience!

Students at Baysgarth School recently entered a new Glee

Competition being organised by Vision for Education. The

event was designed to showcase the talent in schools

throughout North Lincolnshire and 7 of our local schools took

part. Open to all pupils in KS3 & KS4, the evening

performance was a knock out. Baysgarth sent 10 of its very

talented students under the group name of G-Bay (a play on

the words Glee, Ebay and Baysgarth). Mrs Jackson was

responsible for the dance element of the performance with

Mrs Guy working with the singers and musician in the group.

Our team comprised of Dancers: Soul Roberts, Emily Vint,

Emily Martinson, Alice Marlow, Heather Mason, Tilly

Needham and Chloe Pettit. Singers: Rebecca Hewitt and

Danielle Bullivent both in year 8, with the line-up completed

by Bethany Walton (year 11) who played the electric violin.

The group piece was the beautiful ‗Memory‘ from the musical

‗Cats‘ by Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber. Although we were the

last school to perform on the night, as the saying goes ―we

saved the best till last!‖ Placed 2nd overall, Baysgarth was

delighted with the comments from the judges which included

―Great vocals and dance‖, ―What a way to finish! Very

together – great ballet‖, ―Immaculately staged, high dance

standard‖. We are looking forward to next year when we

hope to take part again as it was a highly enjoyable day and

our little stars certainly shone and did us proud!

Quantum Quality in Young Enterprise Final

Eight Y10 students have been diligently working on their

business project since September, successfully running their

own business, QQ, and turning a reasonable profit. They have

been selling recycled products. They recently progressed

through the heats, beating 14 other schools to be given a place

in the final 7 for the Humber region. The final, held in

Bridlington Spa, was on par with the Oscars and the team

presented in front of over 200 people.

They secured two awards; Best Presentation and Best

Objective Setting, Planning and Reviewing. Well done and

congratulations to Kerry Alliss, Carla Potter, Dominic Ryan,

Adam Wilson, Ruth Bollington, Sophie Anderson, Daniel

Young and Sam Wright.

A Comical Day!

Kev F Sutherland is a comedian, writer, producer and comic

artist whose comic strips appear in The Beano, Doctor Who

Adventures, Match and many more. Kev visited the school on

Friday 20th May to work with two groups of 30 students. By

the end of each session they produced a comic with a strip in

by each student. Each one took a copy home, along with a

caricature that Kev drew of everyone.

All the students who attended the sessions had a great time

and discovered that each and every one of them could draw.

year running! Mainly due to the inspirational management

Y7 boys also won the district plate final under the expert

HOW DO WE SOLVE A PROBLEM LIKE MARIA

Following the success of BADAOS 2011 production ‘When The Lights go on again’, I am pleased to be able to announce that our next major production for 2012 will be ‘The Sound of Music’.

This will be the first time an amateur group has been able to perform the show in several years following the rights being obtained for the recent successful professional stage production. So as did

Lord Lloyd – Webber, BADAOS must now start the search for Maria. In addition we will also need to find the seven children, Captain Von Trapp and a whole host of nuns.

Auditions will take place in July. If you are interested in taking part in musical theatre what better time to come and join us. We rehearse on Tuesday evenings at 7.30.p.m. at Baysgarth School Hall.

At the time I write this we are busy rehearsing our summer show ‘The Sounds of the Beatles’

celebrating the music of the Fab Four. The Concert is to be held on 29th June 2011 at 7.30. at Baysgarth School Hall. For those of

you who came to see our ABBA concert last year you will not be disappointed Tickets are £6.00. I realise that this edition of The Bartonian may make this information last minute or indeed too late,

but you will get tickets on the door and if it is too late you will be able to enjoy BADAOS’ performance of THE SOUND OF MUSIC, in February next year.

Autumn at Ropery Hall

Music, theatre and comedy – and a return of the anarchic Scottish Falsetto Sock Puppet

Theatre Company – make the autumn programme at Ropery Hall one to look forward to as

the nights draw in.

A single August performance, by Chloe Hall and Silas Palmer, is the precursor of a mix of

live entertainment from September to December.

September’s highlights include North Country Theatre’s adaptation of D H Lawrence’s The

Rocking Horse Winner, a chance to see a rare solo performance by Aynsley Lister, the

farewell tour of The Hamsters and, together for the first time in three years, Collister, Kelly

& Filleul.

October looks to be a star-packed month with, amongst others appearing, will be those two

mad Scottish puppets, stand up comedian, writer and actress Jo Caulfield, award winning

singer Beverley Craven and former member of the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band, Neil Innes.

In November Ropery Hall celebrates the wit and wisdom of Joyce Grenfell in a gem of

nostalgia from the golden age of revue. Those of a certain age will remember the lady

herself but those younger might remember Maureen Lipman’s one-woman show: Re-Joyce.

Waters’ Edge Visitor Centre

By mid July there is a wealth of wildlife at Waters‟ Edge. Summer is always a glorious time to visit. There is a huge range of bird species and at this time of year there are some super butterflies, damselflies and dragonflies. This year we also have sheep and goats with their lambs and kids.

Our annual Wildlife Day is on Sunday 24 July, with displays and information from such diverse organisations as the RSPB, Woodland Trust, Groups with interests in Bee Keeping, Badgers, Bugs, Bats, Goats and Rabbits. The Environment Agency and Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust will also be here.

On the day there will be a Toad Rescue, Pond Dipping, a Nature Trail, a Woodland Walk. Meet the Goats and Falconry – a chance to meet the birds.

There are craft courses during the school holidays and the award-winning photographer Paul Hobson is running a photography course. There will also be a number of organised walks. Following the successes with two photographic exhibitions, we have two more exhibitions. One of Architecture by courtesy of ARC – 30 July to 21 Aug, and the Five Art Group are exhibiting and selling their exceptional paintings over the bank holiday weekend 27 to 29 August.

The Centre Summer opening is 10 until 5 every day, parking and entry are free.

been sent out to last year’s participants and a

copy of the entry form is available in this issue of

the Bartonian on page 3. Closing date for

entries is Friday 8th July. Judging will take place

in the middle of July and August.

The judges this year will be Councillor Frank

Neighbourhood Services Team Representative,

and last year’s winners.

Each year a Presentation Evening for the

winners is held in the Assembly Rooms during

September.

“We’ll Meet Again” A Promise Made for 2011 Barton Arts Week

Barton Arts Week1 heralded its 14th year of cultural events, this year between 25th June and 2nd July, with a May pre-sale of tickets at Wilderspin National School2. Welcoming refreshments were provided by Scholars, Wilderspin‟s newly appointed caterers, selected recorded music sounded all day, there was an impressive calligraphy exhibition from Lindsey Scribes3 and a secondhand book stall completed this regular annual event.

Later, at Queens, participants were in lively mood, entertained at a popular Nostalgia 1940s/50s Night listening and dancing to the spectacular Shiny Stockings Swing Band4. Paula Baldwin held listeners spellbound as she knowledgably introduced her energetic and talented eight musicians who played much loved Glenn Miller tunes under the baton of musical director, Major (Ret.) Paul Murrell. Talented singers, Tony Orme, Sara Blair Manning and Christine Scott, brought Frank Sinatra, the Andrews Sisters, Peggy Lee and Vera Lynn into the room. And vintage dance troupe, Jump Jive Alive, demonstrated swing jive and rock n roll routines.

The evening began with a wartime blackout and the eeriness of a World War 11 air raid siren followed by the voice of Winston Churchill. A full audience, many wearing authentic period costumes (one even sporting a German uniform, perhaps for inclusivity reasons!) celebrated two decades of song, lifting every heart as in years gone by. The dance floor was soon packed with young and old alike, joining in the Barn Dance, the Gay Gordons and the Veleta as well as some lively rock n roll and the Twist. Indeed, prizes were dished out in an old fashioned Spot Dance and Partners‟ Angela France received an award from the Town Mayor for being best dressed in true 40‟s elegance.

Barton Town Council generously supports Barton Arts Week with grant aid so the official attendance of Barton‟s Mayor, Dorothy Pearson, accompanied by Mayoress, Maureen Grindley was greatly appreciated. Singer Tony

Orme at one stage was seen to croon romantically „Nancy With The Laughing Face‟ to her. Our Mayor‟s reply is not recorded! Sara Blair Manning and Christine Scott dazzled everyone with their spectacular gowns as their Andrews Sisters songs raised cheer after cheer.

We were also supported with by other helpful local people and traders. Local Independent Celebrant, Phil Spicksley5, lent his talent to the event as MC, thanking event sponsors TC Power as well as Barton Town Council and Arts Week‟s general sponsors, Barton Lions and Smith & Walker Optometrists for their generosity. Prizes were donated by Barton‟s Crisp „n Fresh, The Knitting Box and Photo Express towards a successful fund raising successful raffle. Barton Arts Week is supported by public subscription. The event did not forget the inner man and lady, Barton „Culinary‟ Arts providing a robust mid evening locally provided traditional meal of R D Newton‟s succulent steak pies accompanied by Humber Fisheries‟ mushy peas and flavoursome gravy both generously served courtesy of welcoming efficient staff at Queens and Wendy Spencer of Handel House. Trish Koshy will have left Queens by the time this article appears to enjoy a well earned career break so we all wish her well.

The evening ended later to rousing verses of Rule Britannia; flags were waved; the spirit of VE day was recaptured as everyone raised glasses to a successful 2011 Arts Week6.

Tim Phipps from Owmby, who was accompanied to the event by his wife and enthusiastic teenage son, was overheard to describe the night as „a triumph‟. Reflecting on calls for a further Nostalgia Night later in the year, Barton Arts Chair, Penny Phillips said “This may well be a possibility from the demand shown. Victorian Day – Sunday July 31

Members of Barton’s Civic Society are reprising their popular Victorian Day on Sunday July 31 when, from 11am to 4pm, Queen Street will be crowded with characters from the Victorian age.

Come along and soak up the atmosphere, experience comic street theatre, dramatic monologues, children’s games and activities, vintage cycles, Victorian lessons, have your photo taken with Barton’s Strong Man or simply watch Barton pass you by from the seat of a horse drawn carriage.

There will be stalls promoting wares from local charity groups and refreshments in the beautiful gardens of 8 Queen Street while the Wilderspin National School will provide the backdrop to the day’s entertainment.

This will be the fourth time that the Society has organised a Victorian Day and it has been meticulously planned by members of the Heritage sub-committee.

Civic Society chairman Ian Wolseley said he believed the event would appeal to everyone.

Queen Street from its junction with Catherine Street to the Assembly Rooms will be closed to traffic from 10am but there is ample parking available on nearby streets and at the Cottage Lane car park which is only two minutes walk away.

SOUTH BANK PLAYERS NEWS The South Bank Players continue to go from strength to

strength with another successful play under their belts and several new members joining the group.

In April both the adult and the junior groups took part in the regional heat of the All England Theatre Festival, held at North Ferriby. The junior group came second in

the youth section with their play ‘Hit and Run’ by Chris Maybury. Carla Potter won best youth actress for her portrayal of wheelchair bound Gwen – a well deserved

accolade for this talented youngster, whilst George Thompson and Bradley Campion both received nominations for best youth actor for their parts in the

same play.

The adult group performed the comedy ‘Last Tango in

Barton’ by David Tristram which followed an amateur theatre group of dwindling membership as they tried to get ‘bums on seats’ using the well known premise that

‘sex sells’! All four actors in this play (Peter Swann, Jeanine Guy, Clare Curd and Alun Friend) received nominations for the best actor or actress award.

Both these plays were performed again at Ropery Hall and they went down very well with Barton audiences.

In May four members of the group were asked to take part in a ‘Museum’s at Night’ event at Baysgarth

Museum. The event was called ‘Meet the Ancestors’ and the actors played the parts of several characters from different periods of Baysgarth House’s history. Alun

Friend played Sir Henry Nelthorpe who was responsible for building part of the house; Jamie Ward Played Stanbury Taylor, an officer killed in the First World War

(the museum has a collection of letters between him and his mother); Liz Drury played a Red Cross Nurse who worked at the house when it became an emergency

centre during the Second World War; and Callum Oldridge played a pupil from the period when the house

was used as part of Barton Grammar School. The evening was a great success and we hope to be able to repeat it again in future.

Our next performances will be by the junior groups on 3rd July when they will put on two short plays at Ropery

Hall for friends and family.

Once again we will be having our annual awards evening

in July at which we will congratulate those youngsters who have shown the most promise this year, and thank all the people who help to make our group a success.

Look out for us at Victorian Day on 31st July – we shall be out and about in costume, and our junior group will

be putting on a display of Maypole Dancing.

Finally – some dates for your diaries. The next play by

the adult group will be ‘One o’ Clock From the House’, a comedy by Frank Vickery: Miriam, Margaret and Maureen are devastated by the

death of their father....... At least, they would be, if they weren't scheming and squabbling over arrangements for the funeral, what to do with their "non-compos mentis"

sister Mavis, and over who will inherit the house! However, their dead father has one last comic card to play up his sleeve, and sibling rivalry suddenly becomes

all-out sibling warfare...... Friday 14th and Saturday 15th October 7.30pm at Ropery

Central Surgery

Barton-upon-Humber

Patient Forum

The Patient Forum has been in existence for

over a year.

We have attempted to meet every two months

during that time and have discussed a wide

range of issues and attempted to garner

advice and opinions from the patients who use

Central Surgery. We have advertised our

presence in the local press and a variety of

community newsletters. For a time we had

news of our existence attached to prescriptions

from Boots, Lloyds and the pharmacy at the

surgery. A suggestion box has been placed in

the surgery and over a period of a week

members of the Forum also conducted

interviews with patients attending the surgery.

(There is also a NHS website where patients

may express their views.)

We have examined regional and national

statistics and compared the figures with those

available for our own practice. We have

discussed the cleaning of the surgery and the

possible health risks posed by magazines and

toys in the surgery. We have suggested a

clearer signage so that more patients can avail

themselves of the hand-washing gel that is

available near the entrance to building.

The biggest topic of discussion has been the

appointment system. We have had more

feedback on this subject than any other. The

Practice is committed to providing the best

possible service and to this end a number of

changes have occurred. There is now new and

more efficient computer system. Patients who

telephone in are now put into a queue and a s

soon as a receptionist is available the calls will

be answered. There are now some

appointments which can be booked in

advance and some that are available outside

“normal hours”. If you wish to book an advance

appointment there is no need to telephone at

eight o’clock.

The doctors are still concerned about the

number of people who make appointments

and fail to attend. The number of missed

appointments is advertised in the surgery. In

October, for example, there were 116

appointments missed. This roughly equates to

three working days for one of the doctors.

We have been kept informed of the progress

regarding the new surgery at Goxhill which was

opened in November. There is a doctor and

nurse there every weekday and prescriptions

will be available on the premises. A trial is being

conducted for patients living in Barrow who

wish to have their medicines delivered to their

homes. This can be done as long as someone is

at home to receive the medication. It is now

possible for all patients to book their repeat

prescriptions by e-mail.

We have had a number of patients contact us

and those who could be identified received

feedback. Members of the Forum have

attended two meetings of the Barton Senior

Alliance in order to keep them informed of

what is happening. If there are any other

community groups who would like us to attend

their meetings then please get in touch.

In an attempt to improve our representation we

have recently expanded our membership to

include a Sixth Form student from Baysgarth

and a Parent Governor from one of the other

schools in the area.

Do you enjoy working with people? If so, and you are available to offer your time in Barton and Brigg

then Independent Living North Lincolnshire’s befriending service can offer you a great opportunity. Befrienders are urgently required to help provide companionship and friendship to people who are often isolated and lonely.

By supporting vulnerable people to live independently you can offer a hugely rewarding service whilst gaining practical experience in a care setting.

All of us need someone to chat to from time to time a friendly face to have a natter to over a cuppa and a biscuit. Being able to accompany someone to the shops or an activity is invaluable to many people, so why not get involved and help out.

Volunteer befrienders will receive full training and have travelling expenses reimbursed as the role entails visiting people in their homes throughout Barton and Brigg. All successful applicants will require a full

Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check before starting the role. You can volunteer as many hours as you are available on a flexible basis to fit in around your own commitments.

Healthy Barton Commerce –

Essential for the Well-Being

of All

Barton Chamber of Trade and Industry held its AGM in May at

The Ropewalk and is now in its 14th year. A wealth of critical

information, fellowship, legal and other advice is available to

Barton members through affiliation to the Hull and Humber

Chamber whose size confers those extras.

During the past year, the Chamber helped fund the Barton

Shrink Map, assisted with George Street closure work making

way for Barton‘s Accredited Farmers‘ Market (now held

monthly, every 2nd Saturday) and supported the annual

Christmas Festival as well as featuring members in the annual

Barton Directory.

The Chamber has wide general concerns, one of which is that

Barton Town Centre is feeling the strain of a national

downturn. The footfall of shoppers appears more limited.

Although High Streets are vulnerable throughout the land and

probably will be for the next 10 years, the Chamber is

determined to work with all concerned to retain what is a

unique and valuable town centre delightfully virtually devoid

of national chains except for supermarkets.

Speaking with one united commercial voice, the Chamber

made oral and written objection to increased tolls to the

Humber Bridge Public enquiry. It was also keen to find ways

to protect local shops from vandalism, recognizing that whilst

the town CCTV, which Chamber partially funded, may serve to

apprehend repeat offenders, more prevention sadly appears

additionally desirable against mindless antisocial activities.

The Humber Bridge Industrial Estate on Falkland Way shows

some encouraging signs of healthy trading amongst more

substantial units including Kimberly-Clark and T C Power. As

an example, Chamber Member, Regal Fish, formerly a feature

on the High Street, is now fully ensconced on Ardent Road

after the disastrous fire just before Christmas Festival 2009.

Encouragingly 24 High Street is now being refurbished. We

are, of course, delighted the landmark, the George Hotel will

also be improved by October 2011 and that some of our

principal town roads are due to be resurfaced by North

Lincolnshire Council in September.

The Chamber meets regularly on the second Tuesday of each

month. In addition to the vital business of the day, members

also enjoyed visits to the Humber Bridge and its anchorage

point, Kimberly-Clark and the excellent Next Step/Carlton

Education 7 Enterprise Ltd on Fleetgate. The latter provides

many critical services including computer, cycle and laundry

services as well as a help and encouragement to employment.

Inspired by that visit, the Chamber is now taking the initiative

to encourage young people in the commercial life of the town

and this is being pursued in conjunction with support from

Baysgarth School. Any business with genuine work experience

Chamber‘s objectives naturally include representing the area‘s

businesses whose prosperity is essential for the well-being of

all as part of a self- supportive healthy town. With an eye to

this, Chamber is also looking wider in order to keep pace with

the area‘s present and future development, seeking to explore

any benefits to a Local Enterprise Partnership and Humber

Bridge possible initiatives may provide.

The outlook for the year is of an increased and active

membership so if there are commercial outlets that have not

joined, they will be very welcome. Please speak to the

members and treasurer, Keith Vickers in becoming the Mayor

of North Lincolnshire 2011/12.

BARTON ROTARY CLUB

Children from Barton Castledyke and South Ferriby schools have been busy filling Rotary Shoeboxes to be

distributed by Rotary volunteers to children in Eastern Europe. Barton Rotary Club members took them across the river to Hull, from where special transport, driven by

the volunteers, delivers them to the very deprived children. It is hoped that other schools in the Barton area will take part in this project in the Autumn. In the picture, are pupils of Castledyke Primary School with their

boxes.

The 2,000 LifeStraws, through which dirty water is sucked and cleaned, sent by Barton Rotary Club, arrived in

Cucuta, Colombia and were immediately distributed to children in the flood devastated areas by local Rotarians.

Also, working with Cucuta Rotary Clubs, Barton, Louth and Grimsby St James Rotary Clubs are helping to pay for equipping a Dental Surgery in a hospital for very poor

people which will be run by volunteer dentists who are Rotarians.

In the same town, we have also provided furniture and

equipment for a school and also a special needs school being refurbished by Rotarians and members of Rotaract. Special grants from the Rotary Foundation charity help with the cost.

£5,000 has been raised, partly with a sponsored walk, to provide a very handicapped teenager with a specially designed electric wheelchair. She has recently taken her A Levels and is planning to study at Lincoln University after the Summer holidays.

In July, all of the children leaving primary schools in Barton and the villages will be presented with a large illustrated dictionary to help with their move to senior education. These have been very popular over the past two years.
