BARTON CHESS CLUB NEWS Denis Lawson was again elected president at our Annual General meeting that was held in August. A new chess season is underway and Barton have played their first league game against Scunthorpe Kings. This was a defeat for Barton 1-3. Barton’s only victory being that of Les Walker against Robert Stokes. Les was one of a number of players from North Lincolnshire who played in the British Championships that were held in Hull this year. Les made a very respectable 2/5 in the U100 event. Barton Chess club owe a vote of thanks to Barton Lions who presented the club with 4 digital chess timers. Barton Lions President Leighton Brack presented the timers to Match Captain Mike Dew in time for the first league fixture. Many leagues now use these timers as time increments can be added automatically. It is hoped that this generous donation from the Lions will help keep the Chess Club going strong. It was noted from the Lincolnshire league that Horncastle chess club had closed, existing players have moved to other clubs. Barton Chess Club meets at the Corn Exchange club in Barton on Monday evenings from 7.30pm. Players of all abilities are welcome, our membership secretary is Mick Robinson who can be contacted on Barton 635945.

Meet Father Christmas at The Ropewalk Father Christmas is coming to The Ropewalk in the run-up to Christmas! He is taking time out from his busy pre-Christmas schedule to make a date to meet the young people of the town on selected dates in December. Santa will be in residence at The Ropewalk on Wednesdays December 5, 12 and 19 between 1.30pm and 3pm to hear all the pre-schoolers’ requests for presents and again on Friday December 21, 22 and 23 at 1pm, 2.30pm and 4pm for children of any age. The cost to see Father Christmas at these ST-ART organised events is £8 for each child and includes a craft activity, a story and present giving with the man himself.

Don’t forget to bring your camera!

Barton upon Humber Civic Society

This year, the well publicised Heritage Open Days programme stretched over ten days to create a heritage festival which engaged thousands of participants, including many day-trippers and overnight visitors. Radio, television and social media all helped to raise the profile of the town and an excellent souvenir publication was produced for which we thank Joanne Marwood, the festival coordinator, and her colleagues at the Ropewalk. Our exhibition “Welcome to Barton” shared recollections of newcomers to the town and their thoughts on how the town has changed. Jonathan Evison lectured about the history of “Barton Town Band”, and Society Chairman, Richard Clarke, gave talks at Tyrwhitt Hall and led a guided walk of Barton Cemetery. Geoff Bryant gave guided tours of St. Peter’s Church – and the Society is grateful to English Heritage for offering free public entry to the Church during the festival weekends. Richard Chadd from the Environment Agency gave a guided talk at the Beck about its underground water sources and the restoration work at the site by the Civic Society. The Society has had an enquiry asking for any living relatives of McKenzie Twidle who was born in South Ferriby in 1898 to John (born 1857, South Ferriby) and Millicent (nee Jacques, born 1859, Belton) living at 21 Green Lane, Barrow Road, Barton in 1918. McKenzie had three brothers (Christopher, Fred and Harry) and a sister, Alice Faran Braim (nee Twidle), McKenzie served in the Royal Irish Rifles and died in October 1918 and is buried in Ingoyghem Military Cemetery. Local villagers are keen to learn about McKenzie’s role in their liberation during the First World War. Please get in touch if you can shed any light on McKenzie (tel. 01652 635172).

At the 2018 Presentation Evening in The Assembly Rooms the winners all received a trophy, certificate and gift voucher from the Mayor of Barton, Councillor Nigel Pinchbeck and Representative of Barton Civic Society, Jo Mulhearn.

Horticultural Show best for years. “BEST in years!” “ Exactly as the show used to be!” Just two of the comments about this year’s hugely successful Barton Horticultural Show. Despite the poor growing season allotment holders and the gardeners, cooks and growers from Barton and surrounding area excelled themselves by putting on a magnificent display at the 68th Annual show held at Trinity Methodist Hall on 18 August. Everything about the show was better than the last few years: more exhibitors, more produce and other exhibits, more public to view and more children taking part as the photograph below shows – their animals made from veg and fruit. Before starting the prize giving Chair of the Society, Kev Stillyards thanked the sponsors of the event, and urged people to support the local businesses and organisations who support community events like this one. Many thanks to the sponsors, Lindsey Relay Euronics, Wren Kitchens, Deepdale Garden Centre, Barton Lions, Barton Town

Council, Goosemans Plant Nursery and Garden Centre Barrow on Humber, The White Swan, Barton Rotary, and Benson’s Family Butchers, without whose support the show would not be possible. And so to the future… A date for your diary for next year, the show will be on Saturday 17 August. Also for next year we will have full and half plots available for anyone who wants to have a go at growing their own. It’s hard work but very rewarding, the produce tastes great and there is plenty of advice and help available. Families are very welcome. Get in touch if you want to know more via the web site www.barton-upon-humber-allotment-society.com email: [email protected] or give me a ring on 01652 632438. So now work starts to prepare for the new growing year. Wherever you garden the top tip going around is to dig in plenty of organic matter, not just to enrich the soil but to improve water retention for future hot summers like the one we have just had.

Neil Jacques -Secretary.

Ted Lewis Group In 2018, the major outreach to publicise Barton’s famous novelist, graphic artist and musician has continued apace.

In conjunction with Barton’s Ted Lewis Group, Beverley’s Treasure House mounted the Group’s three-month exhibition of Ted Lewis’ writings, art, life and times followed by a half day public illustrated presentation.

The official Ted Lewis Group website www.tedlewis.co.uk completed its development as an extension to a Facebook online presence, making available Lewis biographies worldwide. In addition, there are now available for local purchase Get Carter and other Ted Lewis novels from the Group direct or from Wilderspin National School. In September, The Old Tile Works hosted a local exhibition curated daily by members of the Group for National Heritage week concluded by a Riverbank Boys conducted trail. If you are interested in the work of the Group, attending a conducted trail or

purchasing any of the written works or copies of Ted Lewis framed sketches of Old Barton please contact 01652 661823

Barton Muse continued its monthly meetings at the Old Mill in Barton

throughout 2018 and the year also saw it publish the third in its ‘Poetry Nuts’ trilogy. The Group was again part of 2018 Barton Arts Festival, bringing four published Estuary Poets to the Town. In September, poets Monty Martin, John Fairclough and Ann Liles, raconteur Steve Brailsford and troubadour, John Hartshorn appeared at Joseph Wright Hall’s successful Heritage Week Victorian Music Hall. The Group was also invited to Ropery Hall in October for an oral presentation of Mixed Nuts accompanied by Hull Jazz pianist and artist, Greg Jones, and songstress, Liz Park. To celebrate National Poetry Day on 4th October, Muse made available a short volume of poetry to read in local waiting rooms. Looking forward to 2019, the Group has been asked to contribute poetry to the

retrospective art book of the hugely respected painter, John Sprakes. Members will round

off the year with guests at the Old Mill’s Crimble Capers before beginning their 2019

programme of meetings on 27th January, 17th February and 24th March, 6.45 for 7 pm. All

interested in poetry welcome.

“Always leave the audience asking for more” goes the old adage. Our third music hall show in September did just that! Local artistes took to the stage in the Joseph Wright Hall and entertained the “Victorian” audience with music and laughter as part of Heri-tage Open Days. It was so enjoyable, we’ve been asked for more so plan to do just that in the spring. We are looking for budding “stars” to perform in the limelight – so please get in touch if you have the X factor.

Also during the Heritage Festival our volunteers worked with staff and residents of Applegate House run by The Options Group to open the Holydyke pubic air raid shelter. We took along the Home Front artefacts we use with schools visiting the Wilderspin School Museum, and over 2,000 visitors got a feeling of what shelter life was like in the 1940s. We’ll be working with Applegate House on further openings for schools as part of special wartime study programmes in 2019. As part of the Barton Christmas Festival we have a Victorian Fair and indoor Christmas market, with Barton’s only Victorian Father Christmas and Fagin’s Den of bric-a-brac and White Elephants, and The Old School Canteen is open for refreshments. Then, from 29 November – 16 December, the whole museum will be transformed to create a Dickensian Christmas. There will be a small admission fee and the historic schoolrooms will be temporarily suspended.

To keep you in the Christmas spirit, South Bank Players will be performing a new pantomime ‘Snow White & the 6 ½ Dwarfs’ from the 6th – 8th December in the Joseph Wright Hall, and by popular demand, Hambledon Productions return to Barton on Sunday 16 December for one night only with another hilarious Christmas show with Steptoe and Son.

We are hosting a ten week family history course in the New Year, on Tuesday evenings, starting on 17 January. The course costs £60 per person and covers the use of digital records with visits to a local studies library and archive.

Telephone (01652) 635172 or email [email protected] for more details or to book for shows and the family history course.

Christmas Art Market at The Ropewalk

One of Barton’s traditional pre-Christmas events takes place at The Ropewalk over the weekend of December 1st and 2nd. During those two days the corridors of The Ropewalk will be filled with artists’ stalls each bringing their own individuality and skill to the event. Since the Art Market began in 2009 it has become renowned as being the ideal opportunity to purchase original hand-made cards, gifts and artwork. The Art Market that stretches throughout the corridors of the quarter-mile building will see around 40 artists and makers taking part – each bringing their own individuality and skill to the event. Many of them will be artists who took part in Insight Open Studios on the last two weekends of September. “Every year demand at the Market outstrips the spaces available as we try and fit as many stalls as possible into the room available, so we try and introduce some new artists every year as well as making sure that no two stalls are selling similar items,” said Liz Bennet of the Maltkiln Road arts centre. “On sale this year will be, amongst other things, jewellery, prints, paintings, handmade cards, ceramics and woodwork.” The Art Market also coincides with the opening of the two traditional Christmas exhibitions at The Ropewalk. Opening on 1st December in Gallery One is Christmas Crafts while in the Artspace The Ropewalk’s studio artists will be hosting their own show giving further opportunities to purchase that extra-special Christmas gift.

The Art Market runs from 10am until 4pm on both days while the two exhibitions continue until the new year. Admission is free.

RINGING REMEMBERS 11TH NOVEMBER 2018

To commemorate the 1400 bell ringers who died in the First World War, the Central Council of Church Bell Ringers, together with the Big Ideas Company, and the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government, launched a campaign to recruit 1400 new bell ringers. This was a call out to all of us and an opportunity for everyone, a chance to make this wonderful ancient tradition open to all.

Bells rang out for the Armistice When the bells rang out on the 11th November 1918 they announced the end of the most catastrophic war the world had yet seen. At the time, bells were at the heart of the community, marking events of great significance and communicating to people long before modern technology connected us. Bellringing has always had a much wider function than its role in the

church, but most of us today are not aware of its broad and inclusive service.

Bell ringers lost their lives Many bell ringers joined the war effort, and many lost their lives. Just after the war, the Central Council of Church Bell Ringers wrote to all bell towers to compile the Roll of Honour. At the time 1077 men were reported as lost. More recent research has uncovered over 300 ringers who died in service. In total some 1400 bell ringers lost their lives in the Great War. A loss to them and their families. A loss to communities. Following suggestions made by the Big Ideas Co., and in collaboration with the British and German Governments, it is planned that as many bells as possible ring out as an Act of Peace at 12.30pm GMT on Sunday 11th November 2018. This will include church bells, office bells and even your bicycle bell if you like. As part of this campaign St Mary’s are very happy to say that we have been training a recruit through the summer and are sure he will join the other bellringers when we ring on Sunday 11th November. We would very much like to encourage anyone who wishes to come and spectate at that time, in St Mary’s and also celebrate the Act of Peace with us.

Is the Price Right?

North Lincolnshire Council will go to law on 12th and 13th December in Grimsby over the price it obtained for Barton land known as Top Field. A Freedom of Information request showed that the Council did not obtain an independent valuation for that land although Councils must obtain the best price they can for property they sell. In March 2018 The Information Commissioner decided that NLC should divulge the decision process to sell the land and the contract. NLC appealed because they did not want to do so; NLC says it is not in the public interest that the public should be told the information. Barton will therefore be the subject of a test case in Local Government Law. Interested members of the public are entitled to watch the progress of the appeal tribunal which will be in Court 3, Grimsby Magistrates Court, Victoria Street, Grimsby, DN31 1NH. Barristers have been instructed to represent the interests of the Commissioner and NLC Monty Martin
