ERBEN RENEWAL: Restore Our Pipe Organ!

We are in great need of financial support to restore and protect the Erben. Donations to the organ fund can be made to St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral,

with the memo “Erben Organ Restoration Fund.” Join the “Erben Renewal” Facebook page to find out about music at the Basilica, and the world-class 2,500 pipe Henry Erben

organ, one of the great pipe organs of America: http://facebook.com/erbenorgan.

Join the Basilica Schola! Our 7:00 PM Schola sings music written by a wide array of com-

posers from over 2,000 years of Catholic tradition, including chant and polyphony, as well as spirituals and new choral works. It’s a

great way to worship, meet fellow parishioners, and experience our treasury of sacred music. And of course, it is fun to sing!

On September 4 and 11 at 5:00 PM, we will host informal auditions

at the Parish House at 263 Mulberry St. in order to get a sense of your musical experience and also give you an opportunity to ask us questions. You can bring a piece of music with you, or just sing a

hymn from a hymnal. Please let Joshua, our Cantor, know you’ll be coming

MUSIC AT THE BASILICA Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time The Offertory motet is a piece the Schola uses as its “theme-song” of sorts. It was written by Johann Freylinghausen (1670-1739), a theologian of the pietist Halle School and a scholar and follower of August Hermann Francke (hence the tune is known as FRANCKE in hym-nals). He himself wrote 44 spiritual Lieder and organized more greater collections of Lieder. His Geistreiches Gesangsbuch (Spiritual Songbook) with 1500 old and new spiritual Lieder was known as “Freylinghausen's Songbook” abroad. The Communion hymn is by John Ireland, a student of C. V. Stanford, from whom he gained a thorough knowledge of the music of the German classical composers. However, he was also strongly influenced by Debussy and Ravel, and the earlier works of Stravinsky and Bartók. He developed his own brand of “English Impressionism,” related more closely to French and Russian models than to the folk-song style then prevailing in English music. The prelude and postlude are by two great organists of the French school, both born in 1837. Théodore Dubois studied first under Louis Fanart (at Reims cathedral) and later at the Paris Conservatoire under Ambroise Thomas. He won the prestigious Prix de Rome in 1861. In 1868, he became choirmaster at the Church of the Madeleine, and in 1871 took over from César Franck as choirmaster at the Basilica of Sainte-Clotilde. In 1877, Dubois returned to the Church of the Madeleine, succeeding Camille Saint-Saëns as organist there. From 1871 he taught at the Paris Conservatoire, and became director in 1896. He resigned in 1905 after refusing to award the Prix de Rome to Maurice Ravel; Gabriel Fauré took over after him. The postlude was written by Alexandre Guilmant (1837-1911). A student of his father and then of Belgian master Jacques-Nicolas Lemmens, he played organ at La Trinité church in Paris for 30 years. Guilmant toured the world as a virtuoso, including a 1904 series of 40 recitals on the world’s largest organ, the St. Louis Exposition Organ, now preserved as the nucleus of Philadelphia’s Wanamaker Organ.

Church. It stands for RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS and is composed of a ser ies of sessions br inging people together to experience the prayer life of the Church as well as to learn about its doctrines and teachings. Using the Bible, the Sacred Liturgy as well as the Catechism of the

Catholic Church, participants prepare themselves to receive the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and the Eucharist. The

sessions begin in September and conclude with the celebration Christ’s death and resurrection at Easter. If you are interested in knowing more,

MADONNA DI CORSIGNANO On August 27, 2016 the Elluzzi Family sponsored an annual Mass in honor of the Madonna di Corsignano, who is the patron and protector of Giovinazzo, a town in the province of Bari, Italy in the southern Puglia region. The tradition of holding a Mass in Ameri-ca to honor this Madonna started in Most Precious Blood Church many years ago by immigrants from Giovinazzo who settled here in Little Italy. We have a beautiful framed icon of the Madonna, over one hundred years old, located on the wall on the Baxter Street side of our church. Every year for this Mass, the icon is taken down and placed near the altar. The image is then returned to its rightful place until the following year’s Mass. The Elluzzi Family continues this traditional Mass in honor of the Madonna, families whose origins are from the community and their family members.
