In recent weeks I’ve had the pleasure of hearing a few personal stories about how WXXI had a positive effect on someone’s life. I’d like to share these accounts with you because as a member, you make what we do possible.

The first story has to do with Greece Athena high school senior Jason McElwain (J-Mac) who has autism, and who in his first-ever appearance in a high school basketball game, scored 20 points and tied a school record with six 3-pointers. Since that game, J-Mac has been featured on national television programs, has met President Bush, and has even been a guest on Oprah. Former basketball great Magic Johnson was so moved by this story that he’s considering making a movie about J-Mac’s life. A local reporter recently interviewed Jason’s mother and she talked about the many obstacles her son faced growing up. She recalled that at age five he still wasn’t talking. But, one day while watching Sesame Street, he said his first words. “Big Bird.” It was one of the significant moments in his life and one his mother will always remember!

The mother of a young viewer with a learning disability shared a similar story concerning WXXI’s Homework Hotline. She told the producers of the program (which helps students with homework questions) that the only state proficiency test her daughter passed was after they worked together on problems presented on Homework Hotline.

And finally, our national health series Second Opinion, a program that encourages people to take charge of their own healthcare decisions, proved to be a lifesaver for one viewer. This story comes from a woman who met one of the producers of the series on an airplane. The woman struck up a conversation with the producer, asking what she did for a living. When the producer told her that she was working on Second Opinion, the woman gasped and proceeded to tell her that the episode on prostate cancer had saved her father’s life! He was concerned about prostate problems, but decided to get checked only after watching the episode on prostate cancer. It turned out that he had cancer and received treatment in time to save his life.

We have countless statistics of WXXI’s community-wide impact – like the fact that our GED Connection program helps hundreds of adult learners earn their high school equivalency diploma each year, or that more than 3,000 people with visual impairment have access to the printed word through Reachout Radio, or that thousands of toddlers who watch our Ready to Learn children’s programming are better prepared when they start school. But it’s heartfelt stories like the ones I’ve just shared with you that convey the importance of WXXI in everyday lives.

As we head into the final month of our budget year, I hope you will consider supporting our programs and services with an additional gift. And there are other ways that you can help, especially by including WXXI in your estate plans. What do Frank Sinatra, James Taylor and Queen Latifah have in common?

They’ve all performed with Jay Leonhart, one of the world’s greatest bass players – who will visit Rochester this month! Mr. Leonhart returns to the Flower City for The Commission Project’s (TCP) annual Swing n’ Jazz event, three days of performances, workshops and a golf tournament with proceeds benefi ting TCP’s educational programs. While he’s in town, he’ll be joining WXXI’s Mostly Jazz host Tom Hampson in studio to introduce his musical comedy,

The Bass Lesson, airing Thursday, June 1 at 8 p.m. on WXXI-TV 21 (cable 11). A witty and intelligent songwriter, Mr. Leonhart shares his humorous and philosophical view of life as a bass player in this one man show.

Mr. Leonhart was fourteen when he started playing the bass in The Pier Five Dixieland Jazz Band in Baltimore. After studying at The Peabody Institute, he attended The Berklee School of Music and The Advanced School of Contemporary Music in Toronto.

At age 21, Mr. Leonhart moved to New York City to start his career. He eventually began playing with many of the great jazz musicians, big bands, and singers – artists like Thad Jones and Mel Lewis, Tony Bennett, Marian McPartland, and Jim Hall. He became a very busy studio musician, visiting every musical genre from James Taylor to Ozzy Osbourne and Queen Latifah.

Mr. Leonhart has now recorded 15 solo albums - all the while knowing that he would some day begin performing one man shows made up of these many songs about his life in music. The Bass Lesson is the fi rst example.

Charlie Parker, Johnny Hodges and Benny Carter are just a few of the altoists who have infl uenced Legends of Jazz guests David Sanborn and Phil Woods. The hard-driving Sanborn is one of the best known and most identifi able voices on the contemporary jazz scene for the past 20 years, while Woods has established himself over many decades as one of the legends on the instrument. Although from opposite sides of the musical fence, Woods and Sanborn separately and together create something very wonderful in this Legends of Jazz special, The Altos, airing Thursday, June 1 at 10 p.m. on WXXI-TV 21 (cable 11). In addition to tuning in for this great performance, you’ll have the opportunity to pick up tickets to Wood’s performance at the Rochester International Jazz Festival on June 13th at Eastman Theatre.

You Believe in the Work of WXXI and Your Support Keeps Us StrongWhile individual membership continues to be our largest single source of income, it has become increasingly important to raise the additional dollars necessary to produce programs. You may not know that WXXI is very fortunate to have individual donors who contribute to production funding.

For example, one donor has given very generously to specifically support arts programming on both WXXI TV and radio. Another has targeted arts education providing the funding for features on Homework Hotline, Arts Friday and other programs. Another has made a multi-year commitment to outreach efforts to support the mission of Second Opinion. One couple chose to provide for the future of WXXI by establishing an endowment strictly for local productions.

Much like a college or hospital will seek funding for specific projects, WXXI is appealing to its donors to support programs that will address community needs and promote our region. Now that the renovation of WXXI has been completed - thanks to your support of the 21/21 Vision Campaign - we are raising the dollars necessary to put the facility to use for the betterment of the community.

Enabled and AudioFile, two programs produced by WXXI Reachout Radio, have been honored with 2005 Program of the Year Awards from International Association of Audio Information Services (IAAIS) Annual Awards Banquet. Enabled is a weekly program, researched and written by the volunteer host. The show encourages, uplifts and “enables” visually impaired listeners to do anything they put their minds to. The specific program Celebrating Fanny Crosby was produced to celebrate the 185th birthday of one of America’s most prolific hymn writers, Fanny Crosby, who was blind from infancy. Not only does the program highlight her life, but it also celebrates her positive spirit and resolution not to let her blindness make her unhappy.

AudioFile magazine is a weekly program that provides listeners with information about books available in an audio format. Each episode provides a cross section of author interviews, narrator spotlights, new releases, features and reviews of audio books from a variety of categories (biography, fiction, fantasy, etc.). Each review is read in its entirety including the publisher, the number of hours and the format of the book, so that the listener, who may wish to listen to that book, will be able to find the audio version at a local library, bookstore or national library for the blind. The volunteer reader for this program, Sandi Henschel, is herself, an audio book reviewer who writes for the magazine. Both of these award-winning programs are available for listening or downloading at wxxi.org.
