NO PASSPORT REQUIRED, SEASON 2 PREMIERES MONDAY, JANUARY 20 AT 9 P.M. ON WXXI-TV

In season two, Marcus Samuelsson explore six different American cities, visiting with both professional chefs and home cooks, for an in-depth look at the rich diversity of immigrant traditions and cuisines woven into American food and culture.

Marcus travels to Houston, home to one of the highest numbers of West African expatriates of any U.S. city; the Filipino American community in Seattle, who are part of the city’s longstanding Asian Pacific American heritage; Los Angeles, where the world’s second-largest Armenian community resides; and Boston, where Marcus explores Portuguese-speaking cultures and cuisines from three different locales: Brazil, Cape Verde and Portugal.

Other episodes focus on the Chinese American community in Las Vegas, which has grown tremendously over the last 20 years, and Philadelphia, where Italian Americans have thrived for generations. In each city, he’ll visit local restaurants, markets and family homes, learning about each community’s cuisine and heritage.

DEAR FRIEND,Happy New Year!

2020 promises to be a banner year for anniversaries. It’s Susan B. Anthony’s 200th birthday, the 75th year of the Susan B. Anthony Museum & House, and the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment (frequently called the Susan B. Anthony Amendment), granting women the right to vote. Throughout the year we’ll be honoring this remarkable year of women’s rights with special television, radio, online, and film presentations – including American Experience: The Vote, which explores how and why millions of 20th-century Americans mobilized for and against women’s suffrage, premiering in the summer.

Our long-time Live from Hochstein and Hochstein at High Falls partner, The Hochstein School, celebrates its 100th year in 2020 and Classical 91.5 will pay tribute to the anniversary with the production of an hour-long special. Airing on Classical 91.5 in April, it will feature recordings of David Hochstein himself from 1917, a concert recording of The Hochstein Alumni orchestra, stories about Hochstein’s life and legacy, and much, much more.

2020 also marks the 50th anniversary of PBS. WXXI, along with PBS member stations across the country, will be celebrating throughout the year. This will include the launch of a digital and social media “quote campaign,” where we’ll be sharing quotes from PBS’ most popular celebrities such as Julia Child, Cookie Monster and Mister Rogers. We’ll be inviting you to share your favorites. Stay tuned for more anniversaries, as we celebrate our community in 2020.

As we work to build a community that is respectful, caring, and inclusive, January marks our annual Dialogue on Disability initiative, a partnership with Al Sigl Community of Agencies (January 20-26). For more than a decade, this initiative has featured special programs that spotlight the abilities of people with disabilities and encourages dialogue about the vital role inclusion plays in our community. It also inspired our national Move to Include initiative that you’ll be hearing more about in the coming months.

2020 promises to be an exciting year of great content from WXXI, The Little, and CITY Newspaper. Thank you for your support and again Happy New Year from all of us at WXXI!

Best regards,

Norm Silverstein [email protected] | @normWXXI

THE HOCHSTEIN SCHOOL was founded in 1920 and today serves over 3,500 people throughout Greater Rochester each year. They are dedicated to providing all members of our community access to excellent arts education – regardless of age, background, abilities, or finances. WXXI connects with Dr. Margaret Quackenbush, President & Executive Director of Hochstein, to learn more about this community arts school.

Q. Describe the range of offerings at the Hochstein School. We offer programs in music, dance, and Expressive Arts for all ages – from 6 months through

adulthood. Our eldest student is 94! Individual lessons, classes, and ensembles are taught by a highly qualified faculty who are specialists in their areas.

Q. Do you need any prior experience to take adult classes?None whatsoever! Just a desire to try. Of course, along with opportunities for beginners, we do have specific classes that are intended for those with more developed skills. Our aim is to have the right spot for everyone. Q. What advice do you have for adult beginners?Give yourself a chance! Adults can be very hard on themselves and sometimes have unrealistic expectations. Progress will occur with time and perseverance! And remember to have fun.Q. How can people incorporate more music and dance into their day-to-day lives?Live from Hochstein in the fall and spring and Hochstein at High Falls during the summer months are just two ways to hear a great array of area musicians. We also feature our accomplished faculty members in the Spotlight on Faculty series and our music and dance students in more than one hundred student concerts and recitals each year (nearly all, free!). Q. How does the legacy of David Hochstein live on today? His legacy, and that of his patrons, is vividly at work every day at Hochstein. We strive for his level of excellence in all we do, and through our robust tuition assistance program, we are steadfast about providing the kind of opportunity he received. Q. Congratulations on your centennial! What can our region look forward to in the coming year? We’ll be highlighting both our current students and accomplished alumni in a number of concerts throughout the year – as well as launching a deeper view of our rich history on our website. This American Life CAPITOL STEPS’ NEW YEAR’S EDITION OF “POLITICS TAKES A HOLIDAY” WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 1 AT 12 PM AND AGAIN AT 10 PM ON AM 1370

Has it been a rough year? Did you put all of your savings into Bill De Blasio’s presidential campaign? Did you get a haircut from Boris Johnson’s barber? Did you take a job as a public relations spokesperson for Rudy Guiliani?

Then you may feel the need to laugh at 2019, and the Capitol Steps could not agree more! So tune in for this New Year’s Day special featuring songs from their latest album, The Lyin’ Kings.

What better time to laugh at politics than now, with election season gearing up? After all, the Capitol Steps won’t tell you any actual useful information, but they will tell you what rhymes with Pete Buttigieg.

CONNECT NY:

ADDRESSING THE LEAD CRISIS IN NEW YORK STATE SUNDAY, JANUARY 5 AT 9 PM ON AM 1370

Between 2009 and 2015, Syracuse, NY had the highest percentage of children with lead poisoning in the country, according to a study from 2016. R. STRAUSS: DER ROSENKAVALIER (TAKE DELAYED FEED @ 1PM)Robert Carsen’s splendid staging returns for the first time since its blockbuster 2017 premiere, with Sir Simon Rattle on the podium to conduct Strauss’s glittering score. Star soprano Camilla Nylund is the worldly Marschallin, with the outstanding mezzo-soprano Magdalena Kožená as her exuberant young lover, Octavian. Bass Günther Groissböck reprises his definitive take on the lascivious Baron Ochs, and rising soprano Golda Schultz sings the innocent Sophie.

1/11

BERG: WOZZECK LIVE IN HD THEATERCAST After wowing audiences with his astounding production of Lulu in 2015, South African artist William Kentridge now focuses his extraordinary visual imagination on Berg’s other operatic masterpiece, set in an apocalyptic pre–World War I environment. Met Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin is on the podium for this important event, with baritone Peter Mattei making his highly anticipated role debut as the title character. Soprano Elza van den Heever is Wozzeck’s unfaithful mate, and the commanding cast also includes tenor Christopher Ventris as the Drum-Major, bass-baritone Christian Van Horn as the Doctor, and tenor Gerhard Siegel as the Captain.

1/18

VERDI: LA TRAVIATA Michael Mayer’s sumptuous staging, a highlight of the 2018–19 season, returns with two casts of bright stars. Sopranos Aleksandra Kurzak and Lisette Oropesa share the role of Violetta, the opera’s tragic heroine, opposite tenor Dmytro Popov as her ardent lover, Alfredo, and baritones Quinn Kelsey and Luca Salsi as Alfredo’s stern father, Germont. Karel Mark Chichon and Bertrand de Billy conduct one of opera’s greatest scores.

1/25

PUCCINI: LA BOHEME (FALL 2019 PERFORMANCE) Three casts of captivating artists bring Puccini’s classic tragedy of bohemian friends and lovers to life in Franco Zeffirelli’s immortal staging. Tenors Matthew Polenzani, Roberto Alagna, and Joseph Calleja trade off as the exuberant Rodolfo, alongside sopranos Ailyn Pérez, Hei-Kyung Hong, and Maria Agresta as the fragile Mimì. Marco Armiliato and Emmanuel Villaume share conducting duties.

HANSARDSUNDAY, JANUARY 5 AT 12 PM AND TUESDAY, JANUARY 7 AT 6 PM AT THE LITTLE THEATRE

See Olivier Award-winners, Lindsay Duncan (Birdman, About Time) and Alex Jennings (The Lady in the Van, The Queen), in this brand new play from Simon Woods.

It’s a summer’s morning in 1988 and Tory politician Robin Hesketh has returned home to the idyllic Cotswold house he shares with his wife of 30 years, Diana. But all is not as blissful as it seems. Diana has a stinking hangover, a fox is destroying the garden, and secrets are being dug up all over the place. As the day draws on, what starts as gentle ribbing and the familiar rhythms of marital scrapping quickly turns to blood-sport.
