travel CluB takeS you to the world oF downton aBBey: enGland and the land oF the GentryJoin WXXI for an unforgettable trip to England, featuring a visit to the real Downton Abbey!

On a tour of historic England, we will discover the world of Downton in fact and fiction, past and present, culminating in an exclusive private tour and reception at Highclere Castle, the real Downton Abbey, the home of Lord and Lady Carnarvon.

From Edwardian London and the iconic Houses of Parliament, to the Georgian splendour of Jane Austen’s Bath and the hallowed halls of Oxford, invited scholars and expert guides will help us explore our enduring fascination with the aristocracy, their grand estates, and how they survive today.

Alastair Bruce, historical advisor for Downton Abbey and a Royal Commentator for the press, will address us in the House of Lords and at lunch in a London Club. We’ll have high tea in the home of the Dowager Countess (Maggie Smith), and stroll the streets of “Downton” village.

We’ll enjoy an evening of theatre in London. We’ll lodge in select 4-star hotels, take over our own country house, dine in fine restaurants, and indulge in high tea. This tour is limited to just 25 participants. For complete details visit: WXXI.org/travel or call Laura Garrison at (585) 258-0309.

Win a trip for two! WXXI is raffling this trip for two. You can purchase your raffle tickets, $20 each or 6 for $100, at WXXI (280 State Street) and the Little Theatre (240 East Avenue). The winning ticket will be drawn on Thursday, February 28 at 12 p.m. For more information, visit WXXI.org/downton.

Void where prohibited or restricted by law. All federal, state and local laws and regulations apply. No employees or members of the board of WXXI, or their direct family members (defined as spouses, parents, children, or any other family members who reside with the winner) are eligible to participate.

dear FriendS,Last year, more than 17 million people tuned in for Season Two of Downton Abbey, making it the most-watched Masterpiece series on record! I imagine many of you were part of that audience, and that you’re eagerly awaiting the premiere of Season Three. On Sunday, January 6 at 9 p.m., the wait will be over as WXXI-TV returns to Downton Abbey, where wrenching social changes, romantic intrigues and personal crises grip the estate. It’s going to be a drama-packed season that I know you’ll enjoy.

If you’re a die-hard Downton fan, you’ll want to learn more about our next WXXI Travel Club excursion. We’re headed to England and Highclere Castle (where Downton Abbey is filmed). You can purchase the trip outright, or take a chance to win a trip for two when you buy a raffle ticket. (See details about the trip and the raffle on the page to the left of my letter.)

January also marks the eleventh year of Dialogue on Disability: The Herman & Margaret Schwartz Community Series. This annual outreach initiative with the Al Sigl Community of Agencies – designed to encourage community dialogue about the abilities of people with disabilities and the importance of inclusion – kicks off on Monday, January 7. WXXI has put together a full week of special programming on television, radio, and on screen to encourage conversation around the issues people with disabilities face. The centerpiece of this year’s initiative is a special screening at the Little of Shooting Beauty, a film that tells the story of an aspiring fashion photographer whose life is transformed when she starts a photography program for individuals with disabilities. WXXI will host two free screening of the film at the theatre on Monday, January 14 at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. After the 6 p.m. screening, we’ll “Skype in” the director, Courtney Bent, for a discussion about the film. For a complete list of our Dialogue on Disability programs, visit WXXI.org/dod.

Partnerships, like the one WXXI has with the Al Sigl, help both organizations present a stronger and more focused effort to bring about change in our community. The same holds true with our partnership with the Little. This month we celebrate the one year anniversary of our new relationship with The Little. This partnership has proven to be mutually beneficial, supplying The Little with the resources and support needed to move toward greater sustainability and providing WXXI a venue to offer screenings of some very important documentaries. Over the past year we’ve hosted a number of screenings including Bully, Half the Sky, and Solar Mamas, as well as the premiere of our own Frank Lloyd Wright’s Boynton House: The Next 100 Years. Many of these films were followed by panel discussions designed to encourage movie-goers to “Share the Experience” of film.

This partnership has also moved the Little toward a more solid financial future. During Thanksgiving weekend, The Little saw a 20% increase in attendance from last Thanksgiving, and sales were up 40%. It’s been a great partnership and a great year, but we still have a lot of work to do. Now we’re focused on bringing The Little into the digital age. You will be hearing more about our “Go Public” Campaign to raise funds for this critical work to take The Little into the future with new digital projectors and sound, while preserving the ability to show archival films and to partner with the many film festivals in our region.

Of course, our most important partnership is the one we have with our members. We thank you for that and, on behalf of all of at WXXI and The Little, we wish you a Happy New Year!

Sincerely,

Norm Silverstein, WXXI President [email protected]

SPeakS to a Sold-out Crowd durinG wXXi’S lunCheonMore than 600 guests attended WXXI’s Luncheon with NPR’s Diane Rehm at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center in late November.

As part of the program, WXXI’s President Norm Silverstein sat down for a one-on-one interview with Diane, who was engaging and entertaining. Norm also opened the floor for questions, and when Diane was asked about the importance of NPR in the current media landscape – she replied “It would be a sad day if the public didn’t have a voice they could trust — one free of commercial interest or an advertiser’s point of view. We go to extraordinary lengths to provide balanced points of view, and I believe that the need for a strong news presence has never been greater.”

wXXi’S Coat & Sweater drive“ All of us, at some time or other, need help. Whether we’re giving or receiving, each one of us has something valuable to bring to this world. That’s one of the things that connects us as neighbors — in our own way, everyone is a giver and a receiver.” —FREd ROGERS

WXXI teamed up with the Rochester City School District (RCSD) to sponsor a sweater and coat drive as a tribute to Fred Rogers and his example of being a caring neighbor. WXXI’s Coat & Sweater Drive ran for two weeks in November. During the drive, members of the community were asked to donate new or gently worn sweaters and winter coats, as well as other clothing. Collection receptacles were located at WXXI, the Little Theatre, RCSD’s Central Office, the Rochester Public Market, and select YMCA of Greater Rochester branches.

Thousands of coats, sweaters, mittens, hats and other pieces of clothing were collected and distributed by the RCSD to its students. If you donated to WXXI’s Coat & Sweater Drive in November, we thank you! We’d also like to thank all of our collection sites.

To kick off the drive WXXI wrapped a tree outside the station with a sweater (pictured). The sweater was created by local fiber artist and WXXI employee Gretchen Spittler.

roBert C. StevenS wXXi’S aSSoCiate oF the year

WXXI Public Broadcasting named Robert C. Stevens 2012 Associate of the Year during the Diane Rehm Luncheon at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center on Friday, November 16. WXXI President Norm Silverstein

presented Mr. Stevens with the award, which recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions in support of WXXI’s mission of public service.

Mr. Stevens and his late wife Jane were founding members of WXXI, supporting the station’s mission since 1966. It was Jane, an active WXXI volunteer who served on numerous committees, including WXXI Board of Trustees and Auction, who encouraged Mr. Stevens to be an advocate for the station. In 2005 the couple established the Stevens Family Endowment Fund in support of original programming. Mr. Stevens continues to foster that fund, and is an active member of WXXI’s Associates Society. He also serves as a great champion of Rochester’s public broadcasting station, sharing with his colleagues, family, friends, and the community the importance of WXXI and why he values it.

To commemorate the award, a tree has been adopted in Highland Park in Mr. and Mrs. Stevens’ honor. Mr. Stevens’ name has been inscribed on WXXI’s Associate of the Year plaque. He joins a long list of past winners including his wife Jane K. Stevens (1995), along with WXXI Honorary Trustees Catherine Carlson, Betty Strasenburgh, and Richard F. Brush, as well as Suzanne Gouvernet, Harry P. Truehart III, Dr. Nancy Perkins Weyl, Ted Shepard, Dick Eisenhart, B. Thomas Golisano, George M. Ewing, Sr., and Ed Saphar.

On WXXI-TV/HD and WXXI CREATE (DT21.3) you’ll find a variety of poignant documentaries, including Different is the New Normal on Thursday, January 10 at 8 p.m. on WXXI-TV/HD. The documentary tracks the trials and triumphs of Ariel Small, a 17-year-

old who has struggled with uncontrollable tics caused by Tourette syndrome – and others’ intolerance and misperceptions about it – throughout his life. With his permission, Ariel’s mother Robin turned the camera on him to document their emotional journey to overcome the obstacles of Tourette’s in order to raise awareness about the disorder and help others living with the condition.

Also in the schedule is Billy McLaughlin: Starry Night with Orchestra Nova Con-cert. Airing Thursday, January 10 at 10 p.m. on WXXI-TV/HD, the film tells the inspiring story of how Billy McLaughlin overcame his diagno-

sis of focal dystonia and learned to play guitar a second time with his other hand.

The series will also feature two Second Opinion episodes – Autism on Friday, January 11 at 10 p.m. and ALS on Saturday, January 12 at 3 p.m. For a complete list of TV and radio programs, visit wxxi.org/dod.

thurSdayS are Brit niGhtS on wXXi

WXXI brings you a new line up Thursday evenings beginning January 17. The evening kicks off with Britain’s version of Antiques Roadshow at 8 p.m., where local residents pour in clutching personal treasures for the chance to discover their true value.

Immediately following at 8:30 p.m. is the comedy series The Café. Set in a small seaside town, The Café is owned by middle-aged divorcee Carol. Mary, in her 70s, is Carol’s mum and a real character. Completing the trio is daughter Sarah. Having lost her job and been dumped by her boyfriend, Sarah’s had to move back home from London, where a host of old school friends await.

Death in Paradise airs at 9 p.m. Sent to the tiny island of Saint-Marie to solve a mysterious murder, Detective Inspector Richard Poole is a total fish out of water. What Richard finds is a ramshackle station and a very different type of policing.

The night concludes with Doc Martin at its usual time slot of 10 p.m. A catchy comedy-drama starring Martin Clunes as Martin Ellingham, the Doc’s truculence and tactless manner causes mayhem in the small Cornish community of Portwenn.

Dialogue on Disability: The Herman & Margaret Schwartz Community Series, a partnership between WXXI and Al Sigl Community of Agencies, is an annual initiative that celebrates the amazing lives of people with special needs. During the week-long initiative, which runs January 7 through January 14, WXXI presents special programming on TV, radio, and at the Little Theatre. The programming is designed to encourage community dialogue about the abilities of people with physical and intellectual disabilities and the importance of inclusion.

Throughout the TV and radio listings you’ll find Dialogue on Disability programming identified with an v. You can also read more about the free film we’re screening on Monday, January 14 at the Little Theatre called Shooting Beauty on the “WXXI & Little” page in this program guide. Dialogue on Disability is made possible through support from the Fred L. Emerson Foundation.

The Abolitionist: American Experience airs Sundays, January 13-27 at 10 p.m. on WXXI-TV/HD Vividly bringing to life the epic struggles of the men and women who fought to end slavery, The Abolitionist tells the intertwined stories of Frederick Douglass, William Lloyd Garrison, Angelina Grimké, Harriet Beecher Stowe and John Brown. Fighting body and soul, they led the most important civil rights crusade in American history. What began as a pacifist movement became a fiery and furious struggle that forever changed the nation. Black and white, Northerners and Southerners, poor and wealthy, these passionate anti-slavery activists tore the nation apart in order to form a more perfect union. The series, which tells the story largely through period drama narrative, airs 150 years after the Emancipation Proclamation took effect in January 1863.

A Conversation with Barbara Arrowsmith YoungBarbara Arrowsmith Young was born into a world that constantly bewildered her. While other kids around her could talk and converse easily, she struggled to attach meaning to everyday words and phrases. While she was born with severe learning disabilities, as an adult she managed to completely overcome them by changing her own brain.

This special is part of Dialogue on Disability: The Herman & Margaret Schwartz Community Series, a partnership between WXXI and Al Sigl Community of Agencies that celebrates the amazing lives of people with special needs. Running January 7-14, the intiative features special programming designed to encourage community dialogue about the abilities of people with disabilities. In addition to this program on AM 1370, 1370 Connection will host several programs on the topic of disabilities. For a complete list of programs and to learn more about the series, visit WXXI.org/dod.

A Conversation with Barbara Arrowsmith Young airs Wednesday, January 9 and Sunday, January 13 at 9 p.m.

1370 Connection Forums & AM 1370 SpecialsState of the Re:Union with Al Letson: American Graduate Educational Special: Summer in Sanctuary airs Sunday, January 6 at 9 p.m. Based on the celebrated off-broadway show by SOTRU host Al Letson, this episode chronicles Letson’s journey teaching at a summer camp at the Sanctuary on 8th Street, a community center in an economically challenged neighborhood of Jacksonville, FL.State of the Re:Union with Al Letson: East Jackson, Ohio: As Black as We Wish to Be airs Sunday, Janaury 20 at 9 p.m. In this episode, Al Letson and guest producer Lu Olkowski visit a tiny town in the Appalachian foothills of Ohio where, for a century, residents have shared the common bond of identifying as African-American despite the fact that they look white. Racial lines have been blurred to invisibility, and people inside the same family can vehemently disagree about whether they are black or white. It can be tense and confusing. As a

result, everyone’s choosing: Am I black? Am I mixed race? Or, am I white? Adding to the confusion, there’s a movement afoot to recognize their Native-American heritage.

Intelligence Squared US: “Can Israel live with a nuclear Iran?” airs Sunday, January 28 at 9 p.m. Despite increased international pressure and economic sanctions, the IAEA reported that Iran doubled its number of underground nuclear centrifuges over the summer of 2012, stopping just short of the capacity to produce nuclear fuel. Can Iran be trusted to act rational, or is Israel correct in viewing it as an existential threat? Prime Minister Netanyahu has criticized President Obama for his refusal to draw a “red line” that would trigger U.S. military action, hinting at the prospect of a pre-emptive Israeli strike. But what are the costs and benefits of military action? Is a nuclear Iran inevitable, and will it destabilize the region?

In January Oil Painter Beth Bailey presents “American Roadtrip: An Artistic Exploration of Family, Americana, and the Open Road in 1955” at the Little Café.

When Beth Bailey’s mother was in her final year of high school, her mother’s father was selected by one of the largest department stores in Cleveland, Ohio to travel across the country to document the opening of Disneyland in Anaheim, California. It was his job to capture, in photographs and film, the excitement of this brand-new park and bring it back home so it could be incorporated into store displays. The film now resides in the archives of George Eastman House, along with his documentation of the 1964 World’s Fair.

The father, a manic depressive tyrant, ordered the entire family into a brand-new car and they underwent a cross-country odyssey that was equal parts wonder and threat. Along the way, they ran across a Hollywood film production taking place in the desert, experienced the near breakdown of his wife, travelled Route 66, and siblings bonded in brand-new ways. This trip was equal parts the unraveling and salvation of one family (depending upon which family member you happened to be).

One of the most memorable experiences on their trip was that of the Hollywood film production, and many of Bailey’s paintings in her series capture the family’s unadulterated pleasure as they stumbled upon the shoot. It seems only fitting to unveil “American Roadtrip” in the café of Little Theatre.

Please join us for a reception with featured artist Beth Bailey on Sunday, January 6, from 5-7p.m.

WXXI and Al Sigl Community of Agencies present two free screenings of the eight-time award-winning documentary Shooting Beauty. Part of WXXI and Al Sigl’s annual Dialogue on Disability: The Herman & Margaret Schwartz Community Series, Shooting Beauty tells the inspirational story of an aspiring fashion photographer, Courtney Bent, whose career takes an unexpected turn when she discovers a hidden world of beauty at a center for people with significant disabilities. After the 6 p.m. screening, Ms. Bent will join us via Skype to talk about her film.

Shot over the span of a decade, the film puts the viewer in Courtney’s shoes as she overcomes her own unspoken prejudices and begins inventing cameras accessible to her new friends. Courtney’s efforts snowball into an award-winning photography program called “Picture This”—and becomes the backdrop for an eye-opening story about romance, loss and laughter that will challenge what you thought you knew about living with a disability—and without one.

DialoGue on Disability is a week-long outreach initiative designed to encourage community conversations about the perspectives and abilities of people with physical and intellectual disabilities. the heart of this initiative is programming on WXXi’s various television and radio stations, as well as this film at the little. Dialogue on Disability is made possible thanks to support from the Fred l. emerson Foundation.

Soul Food junkieSa wXXi CoMMunity CineMa SerieS PreSentationOn Monday, January 28 at 7:00 p.m. WXXI hosts a free screening of Soul Food Junkies. Soul food lies at the heart of African American cultural identity. Filmmaker Byron Hurt sets out on a historical and culinary journey to learn more about the soul food tradition and its relevance to black cultural identity. Hurt’s exploration was inspired by his father’s lifelong love affair with the high-fat, calorie-rich traditional soul food diet and his unwillingness to give it up even in the face of a life-threatening health crisis. Hurt discovers that the relationship between African Americans and culinary dishes like ribs, grits, and fried chicken is culturally based, deep-rooted, complex, and often deadly.

This film is part of WXXI’s African American Educational Awareness Film Series, now in its 5th year. The series is made possible with support from our sponsors: Pothos Productions, Freedom Trail Commission, WHTK-1280AM What’s goin on with Brown & Allen, The Community Place of Greater Rochester, and Threshold CAPP.

The film will be followed by a panel discussion with: Wayne Lewis, Jesse Allen, and Tom Banister.

Community Cinema is a groundbreaking public education and civic engagement initiative that brings together leading organizations, community members and public television stations to learn, discuss and get involved in today’s critical issues. With locations in downtown Canandaigua, Park Avenue in Rochester, and The Commons in Ithaca, F. OLIVER’S is a retail store that sells premium extra virgin olive oils and aged balsamic vinegars. “We feature both flavor-infused products as well as single varietal extra virgin olive oils and aged balsamic vinegars — all of which are bottled right at the store and offered for tasting,” explained Penelope Pankow, owner of F. Oliver’s.

“Our focus is on quality and partnering with other small, local businesses.” Pankow emphasized. “Our olive oils are remarkably fresh ultra-premium oils seasonally sourced from both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. Our balsamic vinegars are produced in Modena, Italy, by a premium balsamic house. And our customer service is exemplary, serving as another example of our quality principles.” F. Oliver’s works with an independent graphic artist, a freelance photographer, and features products by a small local pottery maker and local food product producers. F. Oliver’s also connects with neighboring merchants, merchants associations, and business development groups at each store location.

Pankow feels that partnering with WXXI enables F. Oliver’s to support quality programming in the area while simultaneously building awareness of the F. Oliver’s brand: “Many customers comment that they heard about us on WXXI. The underwriting announcements on WXXI are brief and informative. Listeners actually hear these announcements rather than change the channel. An additional benefit to partnering with WXXI is that we are supporting a valuable resource in our community at a very reasonable cost.”

F. Oliver’s will be offering classes and educational tasting events in 2013. On a personal note, Pankow starts and ends her day with AM 1370 and its affiliated stations (WRUR 88.5) in both Rochester and in Ithaca (WITH 90.1). Her favorites include Morning edition and All Things Considered, Fresh Air, Open Tunings, World Cafe, Wait! Wait! Don’t Tell Me!, as well as Classical 91.5 during her Ithaca commute!
