DEAR FRIENDS,On September 6, WXXI begins celebrating its 50th anniversary. When I think about the men and women who had the foresight and the courage to fight the battles to bring public television to the Greater Rochester area, I think about their passion, commitment and vision. Channel 21 turned on its transmitter September 6, 1966 and there are still 165 people in the area who have been members of WXXI from day one! Our original members had a commitment to advancing education, to supporting quality arts and cultural programming, and to helping our community grow.
In the last 50 years over 100,000 members have shared that passion, commitment and vision to public television. What’s impossible to calculate is the number of people whose lives have been changed by the programming, outreach, and inspiration that WXXI has provided our community.
This month WXXI celebrates five decades of public television in Rochester. At the time, WXXI had its studios in the old East High School and it was only through the dedication of Harold Hacker and founding trustees that Channel 21 was able to come into existence. On that inaugural night of September 6, 1966 WXXI presented Julia Child showing viewers how chocolate mousse is made – and this Tuesday, September 6 we will commemorate that day by airing the very same Julia Child program! We’ll continue down memory lane that evening with an archival episode of Mister Rogers Neighborhood, followed by two programs celebrating the 60s – Eye on the Sixties and Rock Rewind 1965-1967.
Our radio stations and the Little Theatre are also joining in the celebration September 6! Throughout the day, Classical 91.5 hosts Brenda Tremblay, Julia Figueras and Mona Seghatoleslami will play music inspired by what was going on in the country in 1966, while on WRUR, Open Tunings host Scott Regan and Road to Joy’s Maureen Rich will select songs from that era. The Little Theatre presents Julie and Julia starring Meryl Streep as Julia Child followed by The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (which was selected by viewers as their favorite film from 1966.) In the café there will be a 60’s band and a 60’s costume contest. You can find more information about these events and others planned throughout the year on our events page at WXXI.org.events.
Don’t miss this magazine’s special anniversary insert, where you’ll find some great archival photos and priceless stories. In it you’ll also find an invitation to share your memories of WXXI with us online at WXXI.org/50thstories. We’d love to hear from you!
Finally, I hope to see you at our Open House on Saturday, September 24. There you’ll have the opportunity to tour our facility, meet our news reporters and on-air hosts, engage with PBS characters, plus so much more. It’s sure to be fun for the whole family, so mark your calendar.
We are proud of the way WXXI has become an essential part of the Rochester community. We hope that the founders of the station in 1966 would share in our pride as we work to make this a better place for all of us – a place you can turn to for trusted programming, civil conversation, aspirational ideas, and discovery.
There’s a lot to celebrate at WXXI, from our very special anniversary, to our Open House, to the unmatched programming we present every day. And it’s been you and the more than 100,000 other members who have made it all possible. We thank you and I invite you to continue the journey with us over the next 50 years!
Best regards,
Norm Silverstein [email protected] @normWXXI

For more than 25 years, Broccolo Tree and Lawn Care has been a leader in landscape maintenance, design, and lawn care in Rochester. CEO Laurie Broccolo offers some excellent advice and recommendations below to consider for your outdoor space.
Q. What can people expect to see when they stop by Broccolo Tree & Lawn Care?Stop by the garden center to be inspired! We take the guess work out of planting with displays in appropriate settings for shade or sun. Our knowledgeable and friendly staff is here to help seven days a week.
Q. What recommendations do you have for people who want to garden but have limited space?
Use grass as a pathway, reducing the amount of lawn. Vertical trellis plantings and hanging containers make the most of small spaces.
Q. It has been an unusually hot and dry summer. What measures can people take to prevent dehydration in trees and shrubs? Mulch helps hold moisture. If trees start dropping inner leaves, add water. If they begin to turn color early, then they will benefit from aerating the soil and adding compost to help the tree roots recover.
Q. What are the best projects to tackle in the yard during fall months?Fall is for planting! Look at the holes in the landscape that lack color at certain times of the year. Plant bulbs for spring and fall foliage or add blooming plants such as asters. Extend the use of garden space with night lighting.
Q. What steps should people take in the fall to protect their gardens from harsh Rochester winters?Leave most plants alone in the fall. It’s best to cut them back in the early spring. Select plants based on the hardiness zone and plant in the best site based on the individual plant needs. Some plants need protection from wind and should be planted on the east side or where there is protection from other trees and shrubs.

WXXI is pleased to present Confronting the Wall, a film by Rochester’s own David Marshall and Chris Christopher of the Blue Sky Project. This documentary takes us from the streets of Rochester’s crime-ridden inner city to the favelas of Brazil, introducing us to the young street artists who explore how art brings forth the power to see beyond, move beyond, and grow beyond the walls that poverty builds around them.
Confronting the Wall is part of SPOTLIGHT EDUCATION, a special week of programming September 12-17, that focuses on the state of education. The schedule features eleven films and documentaries like locally produced Confronting the Wall and the Need to Know special, Schools for South Sudan, and special episodes of NOVA, Frontline, and PBS NewsHour, as well as a new TED Talks. The week concludes with the 5th annual AMERICAN GRADUATE DAY, a special broadcast on Saturday, September 17 from 2-6pm, celebrating individuals and non-profit organizations dedicated to helping youth stay on track to high school graduation. This eight-hour documentary series examines the most compelling and influential presidential campaigns in modern history. From Jesse Jackson’s groundbreaking 1984 and 1988 campaigns that equalized the playing field by changing the way delegates are distributed, to Barry Goldwater’s 1964 launching of a brand of conservatism that influenced both iconic Republican Ronald Reagan and Democratic stalwart Hillary Clinton, the 16 stories covered by The Contenders will revisit the past 50 years of presidential election history and show how previous elections are still influencing today in unexpected ways.PHOTOS: COURTESY OF OZY MEDIA AND WORLD HISTORY ARCHIVE /ALAMY STOCK PHOTO

APM REPORTS: WHAT IT TAKES: CHASING GRADUATION AT HIGH-POVERTY HIGH SCHOOLS SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 4 AT 9PM ON AM 1370There is virtually no way to make a legal living these days without at least a high school diploma. Still, nearly 20 percent of students don’t graduate high school. Why? This documentary explores what students and teachers are up against in some of the nation’s poorest high schools.
THE RIDEMONDAY, SEPTEMBER 5 AT 1PM AND 10P ON AM 1370
The Ride is all about modern mobility. This new, one-hour special explores radical ideas, such as designing cities for people rather than cars, how our identities got so entwined with our mode of transportation, and the pure joy of going fast. Come along for a ride on a custom motorbike with actor Keanu Reeves, explore our relationship with personal space on public transit, and much more.Hosted by motor journalist Susan Carpenter (LA Times, OC Register) and former aerospace worker and current comic Alonzo Bodden, KPCC’s The Ride is sure to make summer road trips more entertaining.
APM REPORTS: REWRITING THE SENTENCE: COLLEGE BEHIND BARS SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 11 AT 9PM ON AM 1370One of the best, most cost-effective ways to reduce recidivism is to provide education to inmates. Explore the history of educational programs in prison; examine their effect on incarcerated individuals and on society; and ask why they are not more widespread.
INTELLIGENCE SQUARED U.S.: DO HUNTERS CONSERVE WILDLIFE?SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 25 AT 9PM ON AM 1370In 2014, a permit to hunt a single endangered black rhino was sold for $350,000 as part of a program to support its conservation in Namibia. Counterintuitive? Through funds raised from legal hunting, hunters contribute significantly to wildlife conservation efforts. Is hunting a humane way to maintain equilibrium and habitats, or are there better alternatives?
