Regional Swimming Carnival - 20 March 2017On Monday 20 March, six students went to represent Neutral Bay Public School at the Regional Swimming Carnival at Sydney Aquatic Centre. All of our swimmers performed beautifully and did our school proud. Connor Maggs will continue through to the State Swimming Carnival to compete in the 50m Freestyle event.
Well done to all of our swimmers.

Last Sunday, Yumi Konetzny (5T) participated in NSW Public Schools Ensembles Concert at Sydney Conservatorium of Music in the City. She is the only member of Arts Unit’s weekly instrumental music ensembles from Neutral Bay Public School this year. There are 51 students in Sinfonia. They range from Year 5-10 and come from 28 different schools in NSW. Currently Yumi is the only Year 5 student in violin 1 part after her successful desking audition. Well done Yumi!
Please obey the directions of the School Crossing Supervisor (Lollipop person). We are particularly concerned when the when it is raining.
* Always walk.
* No riding on scooters, bikes or skateboards.
* Younger children should hold an adult's hand when using any crossing.
* Double parking is dangerous for your child and other children. Please park against the kerb even if this means going around the block again.

Kindergarten have been busy learning about volume and capacity. In maths groups, KSV looked at containers that were empty, full and half full and then we worked with a partner to fill our own containers to match the given labels. We also enjoy using the iPads to practice our numbers.
On Tuesday, 21 March Neutral Bay Public School celebrated Harmony Day. 2V discussed the importance of Harmony Day and decided it was about celebrating diversity, respecting other people’s culture and creating a sense of belonging. The children were encouraged to talk to others and loved finding out about each other’s culture!
Last Friday NBPS also participated in Earth Hour School’s Day. 2V wanted to make a statement and decided to use as little electricity as possible. From the hours of 9:10am to 3:15pm, 2V only used 30 minutes of electricity. We were all very proud of ourselves. Have a look at our Earth Hour Day, learning and eating using natural light!

Miss K. Murray - 5K Class Teacher
Last week, 4H celebrated Harmony Day. We discovered that there are 23 cultures represented in our 4H classroom. That’s 23 countries from every inhabited continent, where either 4H students or their parents were born! We used this day as an opportunity to learn about some of our classmates backgrounds and taste some of the delicious cuisines from other countries! We tried dried mango from the Philippines (thanks Megan!), tomato, bocconcini and basil skewers from Italy (thanks Ursula!), senbei from Japan (thanks Jodhi!), a variety of delicious treats from South Africa (thanks Ethan!), shortbread from Scotland and stroopwafels from The Netherlands (thanks Lachlan H!)
We were lucky enough to have a visit from Yousif’s parents Saif and Hiba, who taught us about Iraq and how their family immigrated to Australia. We also tried some Iraqui flat bread which was amazing! Thank you so much Saif and Hiba for visiting our classroom!
On Harmony Day, the students’ researched different immigrants who have come from other countries to live and work in Australia – like many of our parents and grandparents. These immigrants have been assets to Australia, making our country a better place to live.
Aliir Mayom Aliir was born in a refugee camp and came from Sudan. Aliir Mayom Aliir moved to Australia in Brisbane at 9 years old. Aliir Mayom Aliir is an asset of Australia because he plays football really well. He got chosen to play for an AFL team which is the Sydney Swans. Something that he achieved was he liked to play soccer except adapted to AFL and is a champion now. By Joel and Lachlan V
Fiona Wood was born on the 2nd of February, 1958, in Yorkshire England. She moved to Australia in 1987. She won Australian of the year in 2005. She is a doctor whose greatest achievement was inventing spray on skin to help burn victims. ‘You can’t live a perfect day without doing something for someone who will never be able to repay you.’By Ashley and Ursula
On Tuesday March 21, Neutral Bay Public School participated in nation-wide Harmony Day Celebrations. 5K felt it was very important to acknowledge the cultural diversity of our school and as such our class decided to put our hands up to organise the day.
We made posters to remind all students to wear an item of orange (Hugo Willington pictured below with his fabulous creation). Orange is the colour chosen to represent Harmony Day. Traditionally, orange signifies social communication and meaningful conversations. It also relates to the freedom of ideas and encouragement of mutual respect.
We also made origami flowers to decorate the walls of our school. Our origami experts, Sara & Sam (pictured below), patiently taught our class the folding technique.
We really enjoyed decorating the school in orange and whilst we also loved receiving a Harmony Day sticker, we know that the true celebration of the day is the recognition that everyone belongs at Neutral Bay Public School.

Are you the next Primary Ethics coordinator?
The Neutral Bay Primary Ethics programme is in great shape for 2017. Classes are formed, classrooms allocated, and there are twelve volunteer teachers.
After more than four years I am ready for a new challenge and Primary Ethics needs a new coordinator. The coordinator role is largely logistics, school liaison and supporting the volunteer teachers. The role doesn't require you to teach a class (I didn't) and is manageable if you have small children at home (I did). Now that we are set up for the year, about three hours a week is a good guide.
I have enjoyed being involved in this way and I will still be around to support the new coordinator as my youngest is currently in year one.
Please contact me (Peta Thomson) on 0419 626 078, or speak to Mr Tan if you would like more information
