POTENTATE 2019 John Puckhaber

Nobles, Ladies and Friends of Bektash We had our final cleanup day for our grounds on June 8th. A dedicated group of Nobles and their family members have been working on our grounds getting everything ready for the growing season. We owe a special thanks to Amy Freeman, John Free-man, Martin Koechel, Paul Little, Debbie (Moose) Puckhaber and Mike Teb-betts for putting the finishing touches on our Spring clean-up. Our Cheshire Shrine Club, Clowns, High Rollers, Mini-Kars and your Divan have volunteered to maintain our grounds throughout the summer resulting in a signifi-cant cost savings to Bektash.

On Saturday June 15th the White Mountain Hillbillys had an outdoor cookout and initiated the Thoroughgoods into Clan No. 10. A Hillbilly couple from our neighboring Clan, Turkey Gobblah Clan No. 187 from Kora Shriners, stopped by to pay us a visit and assist in the initiation. Everyone had plenty to eat, drink and an excellent time. Our Cheshire Shrine Club is hosting a Ladies Paint Night at Bektash on Saturday, July 20th. Wine and hors d'oeuvres will be served by members of the Cheshire Shrine Club in their tuxedos as the ladies enjoy an evening of painting and relaxa-tion. This will be a fun night for our Ladies and their friends/families. All proceeds will bene-fit the First Lady's project to send our Boston Hospital Shrine kids to the summer Burn Camp located in Connecticut. Our annual Bektash Picnic will be held at Noon, on July 27th at Bektash. It will have a country theme in keeping with our Impe-rial Session being held in Nash-ville with a BBQ by KC's Rib Shack and entertainment by the Dinosaurs, a blue grass band. Brent & Tracy Norris and John & Teresa Flaherty are hosting

Page 11: THE BEKTASH NEWS

On Saturday, September 28th, we will have a Dinner Dance and Reverse Raffle. For a $160 donation you will receive a full course dinner for two by Alan's of Boscawen, dancing, a chance to win a Grand Prize of $4,000 plus many other priz-es. A maximum of 100 tickets will be sold. Ted Dooley is hosting this event. Further de-tails are in this edition of the Bektash News. Parade season is now in full swing. Please consider show-ing your support for our vari-ous Clubs and Units who de-vote countless hours of their time every year to participate in community parades through-out our state to raise funds for our Shrine Hospitals. Thank you to all of the Bektash Ladies who provided us with a great meal before our June Stated meeting. Everything was fantastic! Your help throughout the year is greatly appreciated. this event. I hope all of you will be able to attend our tradi-tional summer get together! Please call Dixie at the Shrine office to reserve your place. Our Clown unit will be cele-brating fifty years of service to Bektash and our hospitals dur-ing this year's picnic. White Mountain Hillbilly Clan will be offering you an oppor-tunity to participate in the Hill-billy Degree on Saturday, July 27th, during our Picnic. The purpose of this organization is to promote sociability among members, to provide financial support to the Shriner’s Hospi-tals for Children and to the Shriner’s Hospital Transporta-tion Fund of Bektash Shriners. To join you must be a member in good standing of Shriners International and participate in a fun degree. There is also a special Degree for our Shrine Ladies. Lifetime dues are $50 for Nobles, $25 for Ladies or $65 for couples. Martin Koechel and one of our Cous-ins from Kora are also working on a Kid's Degree for the 27th. The degrees will be held out-doors, rain or shine, so come prepared accordingly.

SPRINGFIELD HOSPITAL BLUE SOX BASEBALL

We recently welcomed five Valley Blue Sox players to our hospital prior to their home opener on Saturday, June 8! Patients and staff were excited to meet this group, and were smiling ear to ear as each player handed out tickets, baseballs, signed posters and posed for a number of photos. The Valley Blue Sox are the local New England Collegiate Base-ball League team based in Holyoke, MA, and we are proud to be the presenting sponsor of their 2019 Summer Youth Baseball Clinics! Our athletic trainers will be providing their services on site for all children who attend this year's Blue Sox clinics. We can't wait for this season to begin! Best of luck to the team!

The warm days of summer have finally arrived. It’s time for us to get to work in the yard and enjoy the great outdoors. The Hill family 25th annual fishing trip up North was not as good as it has been in the past or as productive. I caught three trout in three

days. Not very productive to say the least. If you haven’t been to the Temple, or driven by it recently, you haven’t seen how good our lawn and shrubs look. Our Maintenance Crew, made up of Bektash Officers and members, is doing a wonderful job. If you would like to pitch in once or twice a month to lend a hand, call me and I will pass it on to the hardworking group of Nobles that are doing a great job. Or, better yet, contact Paul Little at [email protected]. As you are reading this column, the Puckhabers, the Norris’ and the Hills are on their way to Nashville, TN for the 2019 Shrine Imperial Session. This one could be quite interesting, especially when voting time arrives. Our duly elected 2019 Imperial Recorder Randy Rudge, has recently resigned his position, for whatever reason. He has held this position for the last two years and I am sure he is tired of being the Re-corder without an office of his own. To my knowledge has not been allowed in the Imperial Recorder’s Office in Tampa since his election two years ago. What a shame it is to treat a fellow Shriner and an elected officer that way. What is going on? The NSA Fall Field Days are being held this year in Corner Brook, Newfoundland, Canada, August 15-18. A fun time in a fun place is planned for all that attend. If you are thinking about going, time is running short for you to make your arrangements. Do it now!! Take a note of the Bektash Dinner Dance Reverse Raffle being held at the Temple on Saturday, September 28. Only 100 Tickets will be sold. See all the info on page 13 in this issue of the Bektash News. You don’t want to miss this one. It is a fun time! In closing, may you all have an enjoyable summer. Next month I will gather my notes and let you know how things went at the Nashville Imperial Session. Good things, I hope.

See you next month. Enjoy!! Yours in the faith, Guild “Bushie” Hill, PP, Recorder

Ray Palmer Update By his Daughter Joyce

We are now 4+ months into the hospice process and while Dad is defi-nitely declining, he is doing surprisingly well on some days. The pat-tern seems to be sleeping a lot, not eating much, and less interested in people, activities or surroundings for a couple of weeks. Then his awe-some Hospice team makes an adjustment to provide him with more comfort. and he perks back up and re-engages for a few more days be-fore returning to the sleepy, not much energy place. We have experienced two significant drop offs during this time so when he re-engages it is at a significantly lower level of physical ability as the team now uses the hoyer lift for transfers; he has lost the ability to feed himself on most days & often the food needs to be pureed; and the stiff-ening due to the Parkinson's is quite evident on his right side. He's lost a few teeth; they have fallen out, just as if he were a kid again. There is an ongoing struggle with overnight incontinence which is tough on the All American team and causes a considerable interruption to his sleep most nights. There was a long spell when the Parkinson's induced hallu-cinations calmed, but they have recently returned. This probably means another drop off in function is coming as these are generally a sign that something is brewing internally. But he is not in any pain, has 12+ hours of 1:1 attention from our truly wonderful and supportive Right At Home team, and is seen several times a week by a member of the Hospice Team. As a result, he is feel-ing well loved and cared for. When he's awake, he's alert and present, still participating in activities a few days of the week. These include bal-loon volleyball, golf, word games, crafts, and even chorus. Of course its baseball season, so the Red Sox games are on regularly. He's still enjoying visitors, and is generally able to follow conversations, though talking is sometimes hard. He loves getting mail, and the walls of his room are filled with cards from friends and family; it is so cheery and uplifting for him to wake up to every day. He makes his regular Thurs-day cribbage club connection most Thursdays. I try to be there and serve as the card holder and peg mover. I recently watched him Continued on next page...

win both rounds without any strategy assistance. Charlie (his regular partner) tells him regularly that his is a "generous winner"; they are quite a pair and there's lots of laughs amidst the focused attention on the game. There have also been a couple of milestone events this year as he was recognized by the Hospice Team for his Korean War Service and hon-ored for being a Mason for 50 years. I've included a few pictures so you can share in some of these special moments. Thanks for being part of the extended support network and know that we appreciate all the thoughts, prayers, visits, flowers, cards and notes. With love and gratitude, Joyce

Legendary rock band FOREIGNER donates worldwide

hit song to Shriners Hospitals for Children FOREIGNER has recorded a special version of its classic song “I Want To Know What Love Is” FOREIGNER, the classic British-American rock band, has announced that it will be donating its hit song I Want To Know What Love Is to Shriners Hospitals for Children. FOREIGNER recently recorded the song with Kelly Hansen as lead vocalist, and they will be creating a new music video featuring Shriners Hospitals for Children patients. The new release will be available for download on Google Play and iTunes on January 1.

FOREIGNER is donating all sales proceeds to Shriners Hospitals for Children. The Mick Jones composition I Want To Know What Love Is hit the top of the charts all over the world when it was released in 1984, and is FOREIGNER’s biggest hit to date. It remains one of the band's best-known songs and is listed as one of Rolling Stone Magazine's greatest songs of all time. “There is a spiritual undertone to I Want To Know What Love Is, and when you apply the lyrics to a cause like Shriners Hospitals for Chil-dren, it brings a whole new meaning to the song,” said FOREIGNER lead guitarist and songwriter Mick Jones.

July 2019 27

“It’s hard to put a dollar amount on the value of this gift, but this is tru-ly a monumental donation in our mind,” said John McCabe, executive vice president of Shriners Hospitals for Children. “Participating in the music video will be an invaluable experience for our patients. The fact that sales proceeds from the download of this song will go to Shriners Hospitals for Children is a wonderful bonus.” “FOREIGNER has been involved with Shriners Hospitals for 10 years, and we’ve been looking for a way to make a more meaningful impact,” said lead singer Kelly Hansen. “The lyrics of this song really speak to the qualities we’ve observed in the children here at Shriners Hospitals. The kids show this amazing resilience and happiness that really makes one think how powerful love is.” About FOREIGNER Responsible for some of rock and roll’s most enduring anthems includ-ing Juke Box Hero, Cold As Ice, Hot Blooded, Waiting For A Girl Like You, Feels Like The First Time, Urgent, and the worldwide No. 1 hit, I Want To Know What Love Is, FOREIGNER continues to rock the charts more than 40 years into the game with massive airplay and con-tinued Billboard Top 200 album success. FOREIGNER also features strongly in every category in Billboard’s Greatest of All Time listing. The band is consistently in the Top 20 on classic rock radio. As a result of the depth of the catalogue, the band gets more airplay at the format than Eric Clapton, The Who, Fleetwood Mac, Bon Jovi, U2, Bad Com-pany and many of their peers.

THE100MILLIONDOLLARCLUB The 22 Shriners Hospitals for Children have provided lifesaving and life-changing medical care to more than 800,000 children, regardless of their ability to pay. The money to provide these needed services at 22 hospitals comes from many sources: community donations; fundraising events; investment income; and support from the Shriners Inter-national. As health care costs increase, Shriners Hospitals needs your help, more than ever, to continue to provide more specialized care, offer medical education and conduct more research. Too many people believe that if they cannot donate or leave a large sum or money, their gift will not count. Every contribution helps. In order to encourage donors to contribute to Shriners Hospitals for Children, the HUNDRED MILLION DOLLAR CLUB was es-tablished in 1972. The club is named for its goal of adding 100 million dollars to the endowment fund through gifts or bequests of $100 or more.

HOWTOJOIN There are three ways to become a member of the 100 Million Dollar Club: (1) By contributing $100 or more to Shriners Hospi-tals for Children; (2) By having your will include a bequest of $100 or more to Shriners Hospitals for Children; or (3) By adding a provision to an existing will leaving $100 or more to Shriners Hospitals for Children. WHATYOURECEIVE Each donor receives a handsome 100 Million Dollar Club certifi-cate. By contributing $100, you can feel like a million, knowing that you have helped to ensure that Shriners Hospitals for Chil-dren will be able to continue helping children in the years to come.

In Memoriam

To the promised land our friends have gone, To the land of perfect rest;

Their work is done—and the setting sun Has sealed their life’s request.

They have left this earthly strand, For the house beyond the sea,

Though the past is gone, they will still live on To us all—Sweet in our Memory.
