The Benefits of Essential Oils for Children with Special Needs

Autism, Asperger's, ADD/ADHD, Seizures, Down's Syndrome and more

Being a mum of a child with special needs, as we all know is challenging, there is always so much new information to learn and absorb, and at times you question yourself, if you are doing all the right things to help your child. It has taught me so much but the two things that stand out to me is patience and persistence. I have also learnt to think outside the box and am willing to try anything new to try to help make my little boys life, just a little easier. In the beginning I was just going through the motions and I really didn't know which way was up, what to do, or where to turn. We did the rounds of OT's and Speech Therapists, for a couple of years but nothing seemed to be working, I felt helpless. Thankfully at this time I meet Tanya and the team at Sensational Kids and have not looked back, the support she has given to both my son and myself over the last 6 years has been amazing and I do not know what I would have done without her. I think to myself now, if only I had all of the information and understanding of the system that I currently do now, how much easier it would have all been. On reflection of our journey I am so profoundly proud of how far my beautiful boy has come and I attribute this to continually trying new avenues and this is how I stumbled across essential oils. It had been recommended to me by a number of different people over the years, as well as my chiropractor, and to be honest I was very sceptical as I knew nothing about it and didn't really believe that oil could help - I now can't believe how I lived without it. When I eventually I succumbed, I brought a diffuser (to put in my sons room at night) and a couple of oils that were recommended for ADD and Autism. Within 2 weeks I had gone and purchased a diffuser for each bedroom and one for our living room. I then joined Doterra and purchased a large range of their oils and use them day and night on both of my children. I no longer go and spend a fortune at the chemist, I use the oils as my entire health care solution for my family, what I love the most it is completely natural the results are amazing. So for the last year, I have been using essential oils on my son who is Autistic and had ADHD, the changes in his level of concentration, school work, language development and general behaviour, has been incredible and noticeable within just a week or two. If I forget to put the oils on him I now notice a difference in his behaviour and concentration . Trying to get him to sleep at night time was always such a struggle, but I now find he falls to sleep much better and has a full night's settled sleep, simply from applying the oil under his feet and diffusing them in his room. My younger son suffered with very bad Asthma and Croup since he was a baby, we have spent endless nights at the hospital, he was having an preventative asthma spray every day

and endless bottles of Redipred when the croup kicked in. Since we have started using the oils he has not had one puff of an asthma spray nor a drop of redipred, it is truly amazing. If either of the kids are sick I will diffuse in their room, as well as applying the oil topically to their bodies, they also take the oils orally and I have to say they have never been so well, the slightest little sniffle is gone within a day or two. The Doterra oils are all Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade, they only brand that you can take orally and the quality of the oil speaks volumes in the amazing results I have seen. The way I look at using essential oils is they are outstanding for your day to day health care needs, my children have never been as resilient to colds and flu's, I make my own insect repellent, have healed some terrible burns, cuts and scrapes in no time. The way I use essential oils for my son with special needs is part of our daily routine, it has without a doubt helped him and I see a noticeable difference in him and his behaviour. But don't get me wrong, this is not miracle cure by any means. The way I look at any type of natural therapy is it is a combination of lots of things but every little bit helps. So if by using essential oils on my son can make him better off - then I am in. I guess the way I explain it to others now is I feel that we are in the best possible hands. Of all his therapies I have found his OT sessions to be invaluable to his development and wellbeing ongoing, and this has always been absolutely my first priority. We team OT with seeing a speech pathologist and chiropractor/kinesiologist. Of course diet and vitamin supplements are very important and in the last year having introduced essential oils, I really believe we have him now in the best possible place he can be, and the improvements have spoken in volumes. When you do your research on essential oils you will see that they all have multiple benefits and uses - as an example take a look at the flyer on the three most popular oils "Lavender, Lemon, Peppermint" the list of their benefits is endless. Personally for me I just love the way my house smells now, I used to spend a fortune on candles, instead now we have the diffuser burning in our house day and night. I love some of the pretty uplifting ones in the day and it is so much safer than burning candles especially with younger children around. As far as applying them topically, I usually put the oils under his feet on the back of his neck, have recently been putting down the back of his spine also, basically it is what will work for your child. I was concerned that he would not like the smell as he is very sensitive to smell, but actually asks me to put them on him each morning.

Serenity - Mood swing, anxiety, stress, tension, hyperactivity, insomnia
