The Birthday of a King musical is really three musicals—each service outline customizable to your own circumstances.

1. The Birthday Party For Jesus (Pages 4-7) 2. Living Nativity / Shadow-Box Worship Service (Pages 8-11) 3. Luke 2:1-20 A Group Participation Story (Pages 12-15)

The songs may be performed by children’s or adult choirs, or a combined choir! The songs are arranged for one and two parts only—very easy for any size choir to learn.

The Bible-time Chorus Whichever program you select, choir members may dress in Bible-time costumes. Use robes, bed sheets, fabric scraps, or blankets for tunics. Add head wraps tied with yarn or jute. Wear sandals or go barefoot! There really is no need to “rehearse” the costumes—encourage the kids and adults to be creative and allow yourself to be surprised with the combination of characters that arrive for your play.

Ahead of time, select children to portray Mary, Joseph, several shepherds who visit the stable, angels, and even the kings or wise men. Use simple props for the actors such as cots for Mary and Joseph to lie on, shepherds’ staffs, manger with hay and a life-size doll, life-size cardboard cut outs of animals. Again, ask parents to be responsible for costuming their child actor.

The Animal ChorusAnother option is to have the entire chorus present the musical dressed as the animals in the stable who saw fi rsthand the birth of Jesus. Ask parents to be responsible for dressing their children in simple animal costumes. Use black, gray, white, or brown sweatshirts and add simple felt or painted animal markings. For a cow, glue or sew random-sized brown or black felt onto a white sweatshirt; to make a tail unravel a length of thick rope and pin or sew it to the back of the pants. For sheep, glue white cotton balls to white or black hooded sweatshirt; glue or sew black or white fabric triangles to the hood for ears. Add tails, whiskers and noses! Animals may wear socks on their hands and feet!

Again, there really is no need to “rehearse” the costumes—encourage the kids and parents to be creative and then everyone will be surprised!

Animals might include: • Cows • Calves • Sheep • Lambs • Birds • Goats For the performance, have Mary, Joseph and the “baby” take their places. Then have the animal chorus surround the baby Jesus to sing the songs and read the Scriptures.

The Birthday Party For Jesus

The scene opens with the chorus standing close to the stable. The animals are together inside the stable. Some may be sleeping in one corner. Several are eating from a manger. Other animals are walking back and forth, playfully nudging one another. The voice over narrator speaks: NARRATOR:Just look at them! The gentle animals have no idea what is about to happen in their stable! To them, tonight is just another night. But God has planned an event in their stable that will forever change the entire world! CHOIR SINGS:A Marvelous Plan In Bethlehem–Tracks 5 bq

During the song, Mary and Joseph enter the stable. The animals stop their movements and watch wide-eyed as Joseph makes Mary comfortable in the hay. Near the end of the song, Mary holds the baby in her arms. NARRATOR:Yes…Who would have thought it? Who would have known? This was the way the love of God would be shown! His mother, a virgin, He was born in a stall. Donkeys and cattle, the fi rst sight he saw. This is how God would bring salvation to man! Who could have thought of this marvelous plan?

The animals were very surprised. And each wanted a closer look at the baby, the Son of God born in their stable that night.

CHOIR SINGS:Little Child Asleep In My Arms–Tracks 6 br During the song, the animals slowly move closer to the manger and one-by-one look at the baby, and back away. When the song ends the animals are gathered around Mary, Joseph, and the Baby. NARRATOR: Of course, the animals in the stable were the fi rst to see the baby Jesus. But, the shepherds were the fi rst to hear about Jesus’ birth. Earlier that night while the shepherds were caring for their sheep in the fi elds near Bethlehem, angels appeared in the night sky. The angels said, I bring you good news of great joy That will be for all the people. So don’t be afraid for I bring you good news! Today down in Bethlehem Baby Jesus is brought down to man. Salvation has come for He is the good news! CHOIR SINGS: I Bring You Good News–Tracks 7 bs During the song, the shepherds enter the stable. The animals back away from the manger and allow the shepherds to move closer and look at the baby. (Make certain each child is visible to the audience).

NARRATOR: Suddenly, it occurred to the littlest animal that this was truly a reason for a celebration. The littlest animal whispered to a friend, who whispered to another friend, who then whispered to another friend. Soon the animals were excitedly talking amongst themselves and then scurried out of the stable. The shepherds were alone with Mary, Joseph, and the baby Jesus. It certainly seems the animals are planning something. What might the animals be thinking?

During the narration, the animals begin returning to the stable each carrying items for a birthday party—streamers, balloon bouquets, a “Happy Birthday banner”, and even a decorated cake. CHOIR SINGS: The Birthday Of A King–Tracks 1 bm During the song, the animals and the shepherds decorate the stable for the birthday party for Jesus. NARRATOR: Well, what better way is there to celebrate the birthday of a King than with a birthday party—a Birthday Party for Jesus? During the narration the animals and shepherds pretend to talk to each other about what gifts to give to the baby on His birthday. NARRATOR: Something seems to be missing. The animals and even the shepherds are discussing the situation. What might be the problem? Oh, look many of the animals and shepherds are leaving. Have you guessed what they are doing? That’s right…no birthday party is complete without birthday gifts! CHOIR SINGS: What Gift Can I Bring To Jesus?–Tracks 9 bu During the song, the animals, the shepherds, and magi or wise men return, each carrying beautifully wrapped gift boxes. Each bows before the baby.

NARRATOR: The only thing that I can do is love and praise my King.I’ll bow before His manger throne, I’ll give Him everything.I have no gifts of frankincense or gold or fragrant myrrh.I’ll bow before the holy Lord and honor Him at His birth! During the narration, each animal, shepherd, and magi kneels and bows his or her head. NARRATOR: A birthday party is always lots of fun! It’s a time to celebrate and honor someone you love very, very much. I think it’s time for some fun! CHOIR, ANIMALS, SHEPHERDS, AND MAGI ALL SING: Let’s Celebrate–Tracks 2 bn NARRATOR: Birthday party guests usually leave with a gift from the birthday person, too. The party favors and treats are a way to remember the fun you’ve had that day. It looks like Mary and Joseph have gifts for everyone today who celebrated Jesus’ birthday. During the narration, Mary and Joseph leave the stable, and return with small wrapped jewelry boxes for each animal, shepherd, magi and chorus member. The children unwrap or open the boxes to reveal the gift—a cutout heart with the words “For God so loved the world that He gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him might not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16” (NIV) NARRATOR: And no birthday party is complete without singing, a “Happy Birthday” song. Let’s everyone sing to Jesus! After the song, the chorus, animals, shepherds, and magi may leave the stage. If possible, the children may distribute gift boxes with John 3:16 to everyone in the audience.

Living Nativity ProcessionalFor a slightly more complicated play, rehearse the actors slowly walking down the aisles of your church or room, taking their place in the manger—all while the Scripture is read and the Bible-time and/or Animal Chorus sing.

Shadow Box NativityFor a much more dramatic living nativity, recreate the stable scene with backlighting and actors pantomiming the Christmas story as it is read. Hang a large white sheet or several sheets sewn together at the front of the room. Use a bright light behind each sheet so that when children stand between the light and the sheet their shadows appear on the screen for the audience to view. The effect is best when the room is darkened.

The child actors portray the characters either in a freeze frame or pantomime action while the Scripture is read aloud. At the end of each scene, the actors freeze and count to ten before the light is turned off. Then the Bible-time and/or Animal Chorus sings while the actors for the next scene take their positions. Repeat this process for each scene.

The following sequence is only a guide for the chorus and the actors. Of course, you may customize the service by selecting other songs from the accompanying music CD or carols sung by the kids and the audience. Add your own movements and special effects with lights, props, sound effects. Select an older child to read the Scripture—perhaps one or more students could memorize the verses.

CHOIR SINGS: The Birthday Of A King–Tracks 1 bm

READ: Luke 2:1-7 “In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. (This was the fi rst census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) And everyone went to his own town to register. So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her fi rstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.”

Living NativityDuring the scripture reading, Mary and Joseph enter from the rear and slowly walk toward the front of the room. As they fi nd their place in the “stable” Mary may pick up a doll that has been placed out of sight.

Shadow BoxDuring the scripture reading, Mary and Joseph are walking to Bethlehem. Several people enter and exit the scene. Mary and Joseph pause to knock on the door of an inn; the innkeeper escorts them to a stable. Mary places the baby in the manger.

CHOIR SINGS: A Marvelous Plan In Bethlehem–Tracks 5 bq

READ: Luke 2:8-15 “And there were shepherds living out in the fi elds nearby, keeping watch over their fl ocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrifi ed. But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will fi nd a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.’ Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, ‘Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.’ When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, ‘Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.’ ”

Living Nativity / Shadow BoxDuring the scripture reading, position any number of shepherds on the hillside with cardboard cut-outs of sheep nearby. An angel appears, frightening the shepherds. Calming the shepherds, the angel delivers the message. Suddenly, a great number of angels enter, pantomiming singing. The shepherds look to each other, nod their heads, and agree to head to Bethlehem.

Luke 2:1-20A Group Participation Story

Everyone in attendance participates in this highly interactive, fun, easy Christmas play. The presentation may very well become a new tradition in your church or school!

You’ll need an outgoing, dramatic storyteller to lead the group—an older child, teenager, or adult leader. Whoever you select must be able to ad-lib and generate excitement. The leader instructs different groups in the audience to perform a certain action or say a line or two whenever their group name is read in the Christmas story from Luke 2:1-20. The leader will practice with each group before beginning the reading.

Use these suggestions or add your own!

• Town Choir or senior citizens stand and make Bible city soundssuch as yelling, donkey sounds, and trumpets.

• Joseph Men stand, raise their right hands, and say, “I love youMary. Are you okay?”

• Mary Women stand; pretend to hold a baby, and say,“Ohhhhhh!”

• Baby Children in the kids choir stand, place their hands overtheir hearts, and say, “Waahhhh!”

• Angel(s) High school or junior high students stand holding out theirarms like angel wings, and say, “Good News!”

• Shepherds Church staff members or elders stand and shake theirstaffs—brooms, umbrellas, or yard sticks in the air—and say, “Baa!”

After each group has practiced their actions, the leader reads this adaptation from Luke 2:1-20 pausing at each group name, encouraging that group to do their assigned action.

For in the town of David, in a place called Bethlehem A child has been born this day just as the prophets said. The shepherds heard the news that night, angels sang, “Peace on earth!”Wise men came to honor Him and behold the Savior’s birth! Gloria!

Chorus 2X

In a stable they found Him, Jesus Christ the newborn King!Born of the Virgin Mary, eternal life to bring! The plan would cost His life, and yet, God knew it had to be,And offered Jesus as a gift to all who would believe! Gloria!

The Best Thing About ChristmasThe Best Thing About Christmas© PO Twin Sisters IP, LLC. All Rights Reserved. Words & Music by Kim Mitzo Thompson, Karen Mitzo Hilderbrand, Hal Wright

Stockings are hung on the mantle, the lights are dimly aglow. The presents are under the Christmas tree while the ground is covered with snow.I love all the bustle of Christmastime while carolers sing at the door. And children are anxiously waiting, but there’s one thing I love even more!

The best thing about Christmas is that Jesus was born for me.For God had sent us a Savior to set the captives free. The best thing about Christmas is the plan that came from above. For Jesus was born in a manger, yes, Christmas is all about love!

Cookies are baked in the oven and friends celebrate with cheer.Loved ones come from far away during this special time of year.I love all the bustle of Christmastime but there’s one thing I love even more.Christ is the reason we celebrate; He’s my Savior, the King I adore!

Chorus

Christmas is all about love, a love that was freely given To all mankind who would choose to accept this gift from heaven!
