Dear Members:
Happy New Year to all of you.
Now is the time when we all reflect on the past
and look to the future and make all those “good
resolutions” to do better or be better in all areas
of our live. I am wishing for each of you a
healthy, happy 2018 and the perseverance and
patience to stick by all those things you plan to
do better. I know I am going to try and make
better use of my time and resources and be sure
that I continue to support and encourage all who
are placed in my path this year. If I do the best
that I can with my talents and resources, I truly
believe I will be a better person and make the
world a better place at the end of 2018. See you
at the Board meeting on January 10 and the
General Meeting on January 17.
Fondly, Peggy

Happy New Year, everyone! Start your new year off by cleaning up some areas in your garden that need some attention. You’ll accomplish a lot while the weather is cool and nice. You can prune back rose bushes, take off about 1/3 of growth. Most woody shrubs and trees can be planted now, if you have good sprinklers, if not wait until the rainy season is here. We still can enjoy some months of color, if you plant right away. Geraniums are great for winter and spring and don’t require much water, as do our Vinca. Constant bloomers are petunias, begonias, beach daisies, and New Guinea Impatiens. January is a quit time for insects. The one to watch for is spider mites. They like avocados, crotons, mango, cooper leaf, and other large leaf plants. We use neem oil and organicide. Try not to plant under the eaves where these insects proliferate with no rain to wash them off. You can still plant your favorite vegetables, they are tomato, cauliflower, beans, squash, spinach, corn, collards, parsley, eggplant, broccoli, and peppers. Enjoy the New Year in your garden!
