YIZKOR “IN MEMORIAM”

Yizkor literally means, “May God remember”. Our departed ones were loved in their lifetime, and are not separated from us at their passing.

Yizkor is an awe-inspiring holy tradition that Jews from all around the world observe with fervor. It is prayer service in honor of our loved ones who have departed this life. The Yizkor service is conducted four times a year: Yom Kippur, Sh’mini Atzeret, the last day of Passover, and the 2nd day of Shavuoth.

Each of these days, special prayers are recited in the Synagogue for the departed members of their family. It is the sacred teaching of our Sages of old that the effect of these prayers goes far beyond our own time and place.

On Yizkor day, we honor and pay tribute to the memory of our dear departed ones, and we even feel closer to them. They are gone physically, but not forgotten and live on spiritually. They live on in our hearts. All that was good in their lives, in their deeds and their values, we resolve to continue to practice in our lives.

Prayer in memory of a child

O merciful God, Giver of life, You have recalled what is Your own, and have taken him (her) into Your loving care and keeping. Though my heart still grieves, may I, who have

known the joys of parenthood, bring love and cheer into the lives of others. I pray that the soul of my dearly beloved child be bound up in the bond of eternal life, together with the

souls of all the righteous that are in Your keeping.

During our brief life on earth God gives us choices. We can cherish hopes, embrace values and perform deeds which death cannot destroy. May we all be charitable in deed and in thought, in memory of those we love who walk the earth no longer. May we live unselfishly, in truth and love and peace, so that we will be remembered as a blessing, as we this day lovingly remember those whose lives endure as a blessing. Our generations are bound to each other as children now remember their parents. Love is strong as death as husbands and wives now remember their mates, as parents now remember their children. Memory conquers death's dominion as we now remember our brothers and sisters, grandparents and other relatives and friends. The death of those we now remember are fond memories in our lives. But we are grateful for the gift of their lives. And we are strengthened by the blessings which they left us, by precious memories which comfort and sustain us as we recall them this day.

Let us treasure the time we have, and resolve to use it well, counting

each moment precious – a chance to apprehend some truth, to

KADDISH EXPLANATION

While the Kaddish is recited in memory of the

departed, it contains no reference to death.

Rather it is an avowal made in the midst of our

sorrow that God is just, though we do not always

comprehend God's ways. When death seems to

overwhelm us, negating life, the Kaddish renews

our faith in the worthwhileness of life. Through

the Kaddish, we publicly manifest our desire and

intention to assume the relation to the Jewish

community which our parents had in their life-

time. Continuing the chain of tradition that binds

generation to generation, we express our undying

faith in God's love and justice, and pray that God

will speed the day when God's love shall finally

be established and God's peace pervade the world.

Strange is our situation here on earth. Each of us comes for a short visit, not knowing why, yet sometimes seeming to divine a purpose. From the standpoint of daily life, however, there is one thing we know.
