April 22, 2020 : “Tootsie” is a 3 year old domestic short-haired cat who came to the shelter a couple of years ago when her previous owner passed away. It has taken her a very long time to warm up to people. Tootsie needs a home where she can have her own space and not be fussed over too much. She enjoys being petted but only when she’s ready. We would recommend a home without small chil-dren, but she does well with other cats. Tootsie has been spayed and is up to date on vaccinations. If you are interested, call us at the Paws Animal Shelter 937-653-6233. We are located at 1535 West US Highway 36, Urbana, Ohio. You can also check us out on our website at www.pawsurbana.com or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/paws.urbana or on Petfinder at petfinder.com. Our hours are noon until 5 pm Tuesday through Friday. Saturday noon until 4 pm, closed Sunday and Monday.

Shively Funeral Home Offers Free Advance Planning

Services to the Community

Over the years, Shively Funeral Homes have seen a rise in the num-ber of families wishing to plan ahead for funeral arrangements. That is why they have recently added a full-time prearrangement specialist to their staff, someone who will help com-munity members plan ahead for fu-neral services at no charge. “Whitney Heldman is a knowledge-

able, caring professional who will be joining our team as a prear-rangement specialist,” said Bart & Roxanne Shively, owners of Shive-ly Funeral Homes. “Too often, we see the pain families go through after a loss when there is no plan in place. They are overcome with grief and do not know what their loved one would have wanted. This is our way of helping families, so they don’t have to go through that kind of pain alone.” “I’m very passionate about preplanning,” said Whitney Heldman. “I feel this is something every adult needs to do, especially if there are children involved. No one wants to think of leaving their kids behind without at least making some decisions about funeral plans and expenses.” Whitney added that visiting with her about funeral plans was a free service. “We believe wholeheartedly that this will benefit your family, and that’s why there’s no charge to come and visit with me,” continued Whitney. “It’s a simple process. We discuss what you want, what you don’t want, and go over all the options you may not have thought of. Then we write it all down. No matter your age, health, or wealth, this is something that your family will be glad you did…it’s one way to be there for them when they need you most.”

A SMALL GESTURE: It’s a privilege of ours to continue to remain open for business during this hard time. It means

a great deal to us that we are able to sup-port you all not just for your medicinal needs but, to continue to write for you, joke with you, and persevere with you during this unprecedented time. Re-cently, we had a small token of kindness bestowed upon us by one of our patients (TA), a gift of safety. TA brought us fabric face masks to keep us a little safer from the ongoing virus while we help all of you during the COVID-19 outbreak.

This small act of kindness reminded me that I haven’t been doing all that I can during this time. Yes, we continue to come to work, continue to teach our kids (which is hard to say the last), and con-tinue to push forward. I however, have not done my best job to spread kindness, to show someone the small act that could

ripple forward and change someone else as much as it changes me.

This week my call to you may seem simple but, it can make the biggest difference. A simple act of kindness can help the person who is feeling alone, the mother who is completely at her wits end, or the people who are doing everything in their power to keep you safe. A “we are in this together” reminder to that neighbor, wine date to vent over facetime to that mother, or homemade fabric masks could change someone’s outlook by leaps and bounds. We are in this together, no matter our stance, your kindness can bring someone that light that helps them to the other side of the darkness.

-Maria
