We look forward to sharing the educational journey with you and your child. Caring Staff Thank you to the staff at our school for always caring for our students; when they come to the office on a message or when they are unwell; when they can’t find someone to play with or when there’s conflict between students; and especially in classrooms each and every day. What a fabulous team of staff we have. Please take the time to acknowledge the work they do – school leaders, teachers, administrative and support staff. What an amazing team! Contact Number Update During the past few weeks we have tried, without success, to contact some parents and emergency contacts. Please take the time to update your mobile phone contacts and your child’s emergency contact people. Contact the office to update your details or email the school. Primary Sport NSW Public Schools have an explicit Sport Program for all students. At Botany PS we have Sport on Friday and ALL students are involved in either the School Sport Program or PSSA.

• School Sport is highly structured and organised and many of the 3 – 6 teaching staff remain at school to teach sport to these students. Focus areas for sport groups are the sports being played during that season. Skills are consolidated and rules are taught explicitly to students as they participate in a school competition.

• PSSA stands for the ‘Primary School Sports Association’, which gives selected students, in years 3 to 6, the opportunity to participate in competitive games between schools. A panel of teachers organise a number of trials to determine the teams considering skills, sportspersonship and ability.

• Summer PSSA will begin early this term. A detailed note will be sent home to students in Year 3 - 6 involved in this enrichment program, explaining the costs of PSSA and pledging a commitment to exemplary behaviour as well as payment for this activity.

Information for students in Year 6 this year who will be starting High School in 2021 will be sent home today. Paperwork will have the students local High School printed on the application form. For most families, our local High School is South Sydney High School which provides comprehensive educational programs for students. If students wish to apply for a High School that is outside their local area, they will need to complete the necessary paperwork as part of the process for enrolling in these schools. Please speak to Mrs Holmes or Mr Illich if you need help or advice regarding this process.

Dance News

Dance plays a huge part in our school Wellbeing Programs with all students taking part in our end of year Dance Concert. All students in each class, have the opportunity to learn dance routines and perform together on the stage under the spotlights. This gives our students a very special opportunity to learn resilience, independence and self-confidence. All students in Stage 3 take part in the Dance Sports Program. All students in Year 5 and 6 will learn dance routines, such as the Samba and Cha Cha with the help of a professional dance teacher. A number of students in Year 5 will then be chosen to represent our school at the Dance Sports Gala at Homebush later in the year. Our school is very fortunate to have a number of staff members who are also amazing dance teachers. Students have the opportunity to trial for a number of special dance groups. These groups are dynamic and reflect the skill levels of students as well as the number of students across the school. These dance groups have no weekly tuition fees, but there are costs involved including costumes, excursion costs, as well as tickets for parents to attend performances. These dance groups are seen as enrichment programs where students audition for the places available. A number of teachers work together during these auditions. We are also bound by strict guidelines as to the number of students in the groups, due to the size of stages in particular venues. This year we will have two dance groups:

• Year 4 – 6 Senior Dance Group (This may vary each year, due to student cohort.) • Year 1 – 3 Junior Dance Group (This may vary each year, due to student cohort.)

The Senior Dance Group has between 40 and 50 students audition each year for limited places of approximately 25 students. This group will perform at the ‘In the Spotlight’ Dance Festival, Showcase and a number of school events. The Junior Dance Group has between 70 and 80 students audition each year for limited places of approximately 25 students. This group will perform at Showcase as well as a number of school events. We are pleased to share this information with our families to see the many opportunities available to our students.

Thank you

Excursions are a valuable experience, providing the opportunity to expand and enhance children’s knowledge, explore different environments and engage in meaningful ways with school curriculum requirements. Excursions provide an opportunity for students to further develop their social skills, independence and relationships. Excursions reflect the children’s developmental stage and interests.
