Muckadilla TopCrop Field Day held at ‘Maree Downs’, Amby on March 16 drew a crowd of over 100 people for a “Breakfast to Beers” line-up with Muckadilla Community Association providing quality catering topping off a successful day. “There was something for everyone,” said host Gavin Burey. “We had a mix of practical demonstrations and quality speakers who brought topical information to the Maranoa. Anyone who attended would have gained something for their business whether they grew crops, sheep or cattle.” Keynote speaker Mary O’Brien, aka ‘spraydriftgirl’ was a crowd pleaser. Her message was frank that ‘TeamAg’ needs to continuously work towards doing better. “I shouldn’t be driving up the highway this morning and be able to smell spray – but I could” was part of Mary’s opening comments on the day. She continued “You have the tools to avoid spray drift and I’m pretty sure you’re paying full price for the product being applied so get smart about it and keep it in the paddock so it does the job intended”.

Muckadilla TopCrop member, Shaun Nolan said, “We had such good feedback, we definitely want to get speakers from the day back for some half or full day training across the Maranoa before the end of the year.” He continued, “We could only provide a snippet on the day. We wanted to give everyone who attended good information, leaving them with something to think about as they headed home.” Event co-ordinator, ConnectAg’s Rhonda Toms-Morgan said sponsors played a big role in making the day happen. The day was also supported by Maranoa Regional Council’s Community Grants program. “Some contributed not just people but products and demonstrations which helped keep the day fully interactive and we thank them all for helping bring an idea to fruition for the Maranoa,” said Rhonda. If people are interested in more details on any of the topics covered on the day or want to see some of the speakers back in the region please contact ConnectAg on 0407678574.

A gem setting workshop with Manufacturing Jeweller Graeme World will be hosted on June 9 and 10 in Roma by The Silversmiths - Roma Group. You’ll learn to design and construct your own stone set in a silver ring or pendant, with full instructions provided as part of the workshop. Cost is TBA pending RADF funding

but you can register your interest now by emailing [email protected].

Easter saw the Roma Patchwork & Crafters Inc host their Biennial “Showing of the Quiilts. The historic Hibernian Hall was home to over 200 beautiful handmade exhibits including quilts, dolls, bags, embroidery, cross stitch & crochet. The Queensland Quilters travelling exhibit and the porcelain doll display from Roma Crafty Doll Ladies were a nice compliment to the diverse exhibits made by 17 local patchworkers. Maranoa School Chaplaincy & RFDS QLD will benefit from the profits of the Show. Preliminary figures indicate they will be sharing in approximately $2000.

Quilter Debra Schefe said ”we wish to thank our sponsors & supporters with particular mention to Roma State College Year 10 Volunteering students who were on hand to help hang the display. Many hands make light work and they worked very well.” The hotly contested viewer's choice prize was won by Kim Schefe with her quilt "Chicken Coop" and the "Indigo Rails' raffle quilt was won by Cheryl McDonald from Roma. Like all charity events this would not have been possible without support of our generous sponsors particularly Ace Drapers, Roma, Smartline Roma & Springhill Country Craft Retreat, Amby.

The Roma University of the Third Age (U3A) conducted their 2018 Annual General Meeting at the Justin King Centre Roma. Members learnt that their activities will be moving to the Roma Senior Citizens building and that 20 courses will be offered this term. The new executive will be lead by Geraldine Reardon (President) and Viv Bruton (Vice President), Carolyn Hughes (Secretary), Janette Kelly (Minutes Secretary), Glen Telford (Treasurer), Di Mc Master (Assistant Treasurer), Sandra Law (Tutor Co-Ordinator), Lynn Bowden

(Membership), Christine Webster (Catering), Margaret Harth (Assistant Catering), David Bowden (Publicist) Committee Edna Tedford and Janette Darracott.

The Muckadilla Community has been abuzz lately thanks to the great work of locals, lead primarily by the Muckadlila Community Association who work to help not only keep the area alive, but to make it thrive. The Maranoa Regional Council and the Muckadilla Community Association Inc. Have combined to have short, medium and long history Walks site numbered for locals and travellers. Des and Donna Sutton have painted site numbers and erected them on the fifty two local historical sites.

Booklets researched by David Bowden have been prepared. A short version intended to show sites along with their names is designed for walkers to carry. A bigger booklet explains the history of the sites. The intention is to have everything completed prior to the Winter Grey Nomad Travellers arrival. Muckadilla residents have also been discussing plans for the future of their area and the Maranoa more generally with the Maranoa Regional Council as part of its

regional planning initiative. Easter saw the younger locals take part in Easter Egg Hunt. Organised as part of the local playgroup’s activities kids searched high and low for elusive eggs around

the Muckadilla Community Hall. In other exciting news, the Muckadilla Whistle Stop has been very fortunate to secure a computer through Roma’s U3A.

The Roma Branch of the Red Cross will be busy in May holding a Pre Mother’s Day Morning Tea and a Barefoot Bowls Afternoon. Everyone is invited to go along to the Red Cross Shop in Wyndham Street at 9am on May 5th for the Pre Mother’s Day Morning Tea. There will be a sing-a-long with ‘Harmony’ and a laugh-a-long with the games. Tea,

coffee and tasty food will be available to keep everyone energised and the Mother’s Day Raffle will be drawn. Entry is just $5 which includes morning tea. Two weeks later on May 19, the Red Cross is putting on a Barefoot Bowls Afternoon at the Roma Bowls Club.See the poster (below right) for further details.

Do your children (boys and girls) enjoy being outdoors, being active, making new friends and learning new skills? Roma Scout Group currently have vacancies for new members in: Cubs age 7-11, 6:00-7:30pm Wed Scouts age 10-15, 6:00-8:00pm Tues Venturers age 14-17, 6:00-8:00pm Thurs. Father Jamie Collins and Sister Nora Fitzgibbon from All Saints Roma hosted a highly successful Saint Patrick’s Day function at the Roma Bowls Club. There was a variety of Choir Singing, Irish Jokes, Limericks, an Irish Quiz and coin toss at a bottle of Baileys. Most wore green or dressed up for the occasion. The venue was well decorated with a strong Irish theme. In addition to his duties at All Saints, Father Collins opened the Combined Church Services at the Church of Christ in Roma on Good Friday. Several Ministers and members of other local congregations joined in the readings and service.

Normally if you find yourself in a car garage, you’re well and truly up the creek and nowhere is that truer than at the recently opened ‘Up the Creek Garage’. ‘Up the Creek Garage’ features classic cars and a Roma Longhorn display. The Roma Historical Motor Club, Roma Historical Precinct and Roma Apex combined to assist with the opening and all enjoyed the outing prior to Easter.

Easter saw another huge Easter in the Country come and go much to the delight of local kids and tourism operators. Budding lifeguards have been making a splash at the Roma pool. The Historical Motor Club continue to meet regularly and organise spectacular displays of their beloved vehicles. Harmony Day was well attended at the Big Rig with Alan Gibson’s kebabs proving a hot menu item. Corona Lodge members were spotted keeping the tucker up to hungry Wallumbilla Campdraft attendees and away from the BBQ Bill Albeck & Col Vaughn received long service jewels… and thats all from around the ridges of Roma this month!

Following on from Joan Hurtado’s popular ‘Wabi Sabi’ Exhibition, Patricia Hinz will be bringing a taste of the Western Downs, France and Hong Kong the Mitchell on Maranoa Gallery with her ‘Insights to Outcomes’ exhibition opening on Friday, May 4 at 6pm. ‘Insights to Outcomes’ is an exhibition pf paintings from her life over the last couple of years featuring paintings inspired by the countryside close by and from trips Patricia took to France and Hong Kong last year. “I paint with a particularly supportive group of artists in the Miles Art Group and enjoy the process of learning from one another. Painting is my passion. I experience such joy from making art – time just disappears when I am painting,” says Patricia. Patricia lives in Drillham, was born in Nambour and grew up in Buderim on the Sunshine Coast. She is predominantly a mixed media artist and has been working and exhibiting with the Miles Art Group over 30 years. Her works appear regularly in the John Mullins Gallery at Dogwood Crossing in Miles, and she has many works in private and public collections throughout Australia and overseas. One of her most significant highlights was to be chosen to exhibit her work in New York after a workshop in Italy, and in 2016 Patricia won the Senior Cultural Award for Miles. Patricia loves working with mixed media. Most paintings end up with some watercolour, ink, pastel, acrylic, oil pastels and various other found pigments. She lives and works on the land and painting the bush around her is a great inspiration – but almost any subject can get her creative juices flowing.

Its time to dig deep and give generously, the Shitbox Rally is headed for Mitchell! This year teams are driving over one hundred of their bombs, from Brisbane to Darwin, that’s 3800km with a one-night stopover in Mitchell on May 19, 2018. The Shitbox Rally is not a race, instead a challenge to achieve the unthinkable…to drive cars worth just $1,000, no AWD/4WD permitted, across Australia via some of its

most formidable roads (Warrego Highway included), all in the name of charity. Many people in our community have been affected by cancer, in one way or another this awful disease has touched us all. The rally not only want to raise awareness and money for the Cancer Council but also to offer support and a friendly ear to those that have suffered or are suffering. If you have a moment drop in and have a chat, they have some wonderful stories to tell of their previous adventures. To find out more or make a donation visit https://www.shitboxrally.com.au.

Currumundi Boys Football Camp Last year the Mitchell & District JRL Club obtained a grant to pay for the registration fee for selected boys to attend the 3 day Currumundi Boys Football Camp. The boys were selected by coaches based on their dedication to the club and if they would really benefit in going to a camp. The camp was held during the Easter School Holidays and focused on skill and game work. In addition to learning new footy skills the boys had the chance to do fun activities like high ropes course and surf lessons. The boys had a great time and the word is that this is the best camp around! Magpies vs Chinchilla The Maggies had a rough road trip to Chinchilla on April 15 but put in courageous performances across all grades but despite their effort, the boys couldn’t get a win. A brave U18’s side lost but are commended for playing out the game with only 9 men. Reserve Grade were in it until the end when a lucky last minute Chinchilla try pushed the Bulldogs in front 24-20. The A Grade was full of excitement and Mitchell looked hungry for a win but Chinchilla’s home ground advantage proved too strong and they won 26-14. “We nearly came away with the goods in A and B Grade but the game just got away from us at the

end” said Geoffrey Kenafake. “We have plenty of positives to take away and plenty of things to improve on,” he said. Representative Selection Mitchell players Tom Kennedy, Matt Newton,Ollie Peak and Griff Newton have been selected for the South West Country Squad. The team will play in the A Grade 47th Battalion Carnival in Toowoomba on May 5 and 6, good luck men!

Mungallala local Emma-Lea Compagnoni was recently announced the winner of the 2018 Gus McGowan Bursary.

Miss Compagnoni’s strong commitment to the future of agriculture in

Queensland and the Maranoa make her a deserving winner of the $5000 education scholarship. A childhood full of adventures and the-ups-and-downs of farm life at “Umbrill”, Mungallala inspired Emma-Lea to study a Bachelor of Animal Science at the University of New England. She plans return to the family property after her studies and help produce food and fibre for the world’s ever increasing population.

The 2018 Santos Injune Art Show will open on Friday night May 4. The theme for this year’s show is Our Country, Our Life and in keeping with the fun, everyone is invited to turn up in their best ‘western’ attire. This annual exhibition is a celebration of all things art in Injune and the surrounding area and will showcase the best of photography, painting, craftworks and sculpture. The opening will commence at 6pm at the Injune Creek Gallery with finger food and entertainment by Chris Pritchard. Refreshments will be available for purchase, as will be many artworks. The exhibition will run until July 2. Injune Arts Inc gratefully acknowledges the support of Santos and the Maranoa Regional Council. For further information please contact President Debbie Kendall on 0428 261 785.

Recently over twenty artists from the Maranoa region gathered at ‘Warrabinda’ Bymout to participate in a Barb Wire – Double heart – Garden art workshop, arranged by the Bymount Creative Circle with local tutor Sue Pukallus guiding the participants through the process of creating outstanding pieces of garden art using the rustic old barb wire. The words barb wire bring to mind all sorts of uncomfortable associations – sharp – thorny – dangerous and prickly. The word artistic is not one of them. But rusty old barb wire carefully harvested from fields and stored in an old shearing shed has become the material of choice for local artists and sculptors. To them barb wire is appealing because it offers different associations – rustic – and evocative – homespun and folk artish. Barb wire art can add a unique accent of genuine charm and beauty to your interior décor or garden space. Stay tuned for details of the next workshop.

In 2017 Injune partied at the inaugural Beef in the Buffel Ball held by the Injune State School P&C, in order to raise funds for the school. That funding has now been put to good use with the installation of LED lights in the shed and on the top oval, allowing sport to be played at night. With additional funding from the Department of Education the next stage of improvements is being planned, which will include building a retaining wall, levelling the ground and purchasing turf to provide a grassed playing area for the younger students who currently play games such as soccer on a rocky dirt surface. The P&C would once again like to thank the community for their support. The date for this year’s ball will be announced soon.

Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea will be at the home of Heather Jones this year on Sunday May 27 at 9.30am where, as well as enjoying a cuppa for cancer, visitors can witness the great cook-off to decide who is the best cook – males or females. Contestants in the cook-off have not yet been revealed – perhaps they are guarding their identities along with their recipes! Continuing the cooking theme will be a multi-draw raffle

with all sorts of gadgets for your kitchen. Come along, join the fun and support a very worthwhile cause.

Everyone had a wonderful time at the 2018 Tooloombilla Rodeo, Campdraft and Gymkhana . The big crowd enjoyed an action packed weekend of events. An early start Saturday morning saw Carolyn Roberts “Forfar’” Mitchell on Miss Money Penny win the Chain’OHoles/Northern Livestock & Property Novice Draft A . Jody Crozier (Injune) on Concession won the Restricted Open. Andy Mulchay from Alpha won the Oakwells Minis on his little Pony “Bobby”, half the size of the heifer he drafted. Jaye Radel “Yebna” Injune on Private did a fabulous round to win the Bungaringa Junior Draft. Jack Southern (Dirranbandi) took out the Havelock Juvenile draft on Reys Aboonsmal. The Local Muya/GKW Pastoral Holdings Encouragement draft was won by Charlie Brumpton “Baynham”Mitchell on Thunder. With entries capped at 900, a huge amount of cattle were needed and a big thank you goes to the very generous Cattle Donors, to Jobe Rose transport for trucking them and all the backyard helpers and judges. Rodeo events ran all day Saturday in the Arena keeping the crowd well entertained. The Feature Campdraft and Bronc ride was spectacular to watch as the sun set with fourteen riders, 12 brave men and the first two very brave women battling it out in the combined event. Wade Seeds (Blackall) came out on top with new Injune resident Tom Webster second, Fred Stanford (Surat) third and Committee Member Damian Brennan fourth. Roma ladies Tracey Porter and Mackenzie Patch, did themselves proud in the event and came very close to placing, even more impressive considering it was their first bucking stock event. The girls are keen to back it up next year, so look out fellas! The bucking bulls didn’t disappoint and were so good that no one ride time. Tom Webster continued his winning weekend taking out the Open Saddle ride scoring 74 to big cheers from the crowd. Ben Walsh won the Bareback and Damian Brennan was victorious in the Open Steer Ride, a win that also secured him the title of All Round Cowboy. Tracey Porter was named All Round Cowgirl thanks to wins in the Barrel Races and Steer Undecorating. The Maranoa Challenge also known as ‘bush dressage’ returned to test riders. Georgia Anderson (Roma) took out the U16 category with Molly Irwin second. Tricia Krienke came out on top in the Open category with great flat work and obstacle skills. The Gymkhana on Sunday gave kids and teenagers a chance to shine and there were plenty of laughs, a few tears and ribbons galore. An event this size wouldn’t be possible

without the huge amount of volunteer help from the wonderful Committee and Community. A huge thanks also to the generous sponsors. Funds raised go to a truly wonderful cause – the Royal Flying Doctor and the Mitchell and Injune Local Ambulances. A little is also kept aside to make improvements to the grounds and the new ablutions block was appreciated by all. Thank you to everyone who helped out and supported us in some way (photos - p5-6).

The Injune Rodeo Association, in conjunction with the Queensland Rodeo Association, will hold the annual Injune Rodeo on the weekend of May 5-6, commencing at 2pm on the Saturday. The event caters for junior through to experienced riders and will include events such as barrel racing, team roping, saddle bronc, bareback and the ever-popular Injune Hotel Open Bull Ride worth $1000.

The committee would like to acknowledge Rick Knudsen, Dan Joliffe and Peter Barbour who will provide stock for the rodeo; and all sponsors who have generously given to the event.

On Wednesday May 23 the Injune Library will participate in National Simultaneous Storytime 2018. Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, homes and many other places around the country. The 2018 book is “Hickory Dickory Dash” written by Tony Wilson and illustrated by Laura Wood, and the Injune Kindergarten is looking forward to attending the event, which will also include songs and games. Parents and grandparents are invited to come along and join the fun.

After 42 years working on the property ‘Bendemere Station’ north of Yuleba, Ken Kadel has retired to take a well earned rest. Tony and Florence McLennan spoke warmly about Ken’s time with them and wished Ken and Linda all the best at a function to celebrate his retirement. Ken said that he appreciated their support over the last 42 years and the friendship of the whole family. Don and Kay Snelgar also marked 16 years at Bendemere and have moved into retirement in Roma. Tony and Florence are also taking a step back as new managers, Allan and Terry Collins engage in the day to day running of the property.

The local Bendemere Blue Light Committee is once again back in action with the appointment of the new Yuleba police officer Senior Constable Rebecca Sherrin. The Blue Light Association is an organisation run by police and community volunteers under the auspices of the Queensland Police Service. The Blue Light is a program designed to foster good relationships between the youth, the community and the police service. In Yuleba that is evidenced

by the great roll up for both the Blue Light Disco and the Blue Light Bingo which were run recently. The Blue Light Disco dancing was spectacular in the Blue Light Shed which has had a new floor installed. The flashing lights added atmosphere and the local kids had a great time. At the Blue Light Bingo it was eyes down in the Yuleba Memorial Hall with community members young and old joining in. As the bingo numbers were called there was great concentration with everyone keen to call out “BINGO” first. There were many great prizes to choose from for the lucky winners. At half time some beautiful home cooking was presented to go with coffee, tea or a cold drink. The Committee would like to thank everyone who has donated prizes and also everyone who supported the Disco and the Bingo.

The next Bendemere Garden Club Meeting will be at the 100th Wallumbilla Show on Saturday May 5 at 2.00pm. Afternoon tea will be in the food area beside the pavilion. Entry to the Wallumbilla Show is free. Members are requested to sign the attendance book during afternoon tea. Members are encouraged to enter the Horticultural Section including cut flowers and potted plants and baskets as per the show schedule. Members can look up the show schedule on the internet or wait for a copy to be emailed. These entries need to be in by 12pm Friday.

National Award Recipient Congratulations to Meridy Kadel who has won the National Veolia Participate Award. Meridy is Safety Supervisor at the QGC Northern Water Treatment Plant and was nominated for two awards in the Community Section of the Participate Award. This is for individuals or teams who have gone above and beyond to meaningfully contribute to their community Meridy instigated the support Veolia put towards the Wandoan Show which was directed towards youth development, particularly the Miss Showgirl and Rural Ambassador section, Young Paraders and Junior Judges competitions. This was done in Meridy's own time and she has built a great relationship with the community on behalf of Veolia, due to her initiative and this aligns with Veolia’s core values including community participation and youth engagement. American Tennis Tournament The day was warm, the barbecue hot, the drinks cold and the players ready for the start of the Noonga Tennis season which commenced with an American Tournament on Saturday April 7. The brave players dusted off tennis shoes and racquets, applied support bandages and ensured they had ample supply of dencorub and pain killers on hand for after the day of hard fought tennis matches and high-spirited socialising. Those players who didn’t let themselves go in the off season were men’s winner Ben Todd from Bell, and runner up Brian Sinnamon. Ladies winner was Nora Cass and runner up Alice Sinnamon. High school boy’s winner was Oscar Cass and it was a tie between Seb Hindman and Cory Leahy for runner up. High school girl Payton Leahy held her own with the adults, while all primary boys won a prize. Fixtures commence on April 22 and Mary Leahy would love some more nominations for floaters.

Expressions of Interest As part of the fundraising activities for 2018, the Noonga Community Association is planning a clearance sale in June. At the moment the committee is gathering expressions of interest as to what people may have on offer for sale. Please contact Polly Leahy or Brian Sinnamon to express your interest.

In early April Surat welcomed a new doctor and her family to town. Dr Talia Trigger has joined the Surat community with the aim of building upon the existing medical services available in town, said South West Hospital and Health Service Executive Director of Medical Services Dr Chris Buck.

“Dr Trigger and her husband Joel will be living in Surat once she takes up her appointment there,’’ Dr Buck said. “From her base at Surat, she will be delivering a permanent outreach medical service to Surat MPHS for two weeks each month and working at Roma Hospital for the other fortnight. “Regular visiting locum Dr Graham Michael will continue to deliver his existing service to Surat as normal during the time when Dr Trigger is at Roma. “Dr Trigger brings with her advanced skills in emergency medicine that will be of great benefit to the local community. “In addition, by working between Surat and Roma, she will help develop closer links between the two facilities and help enhance the overall model of general practice at Surat. “In welcoming Dr Trigger to Surat – and Roma – I’d also like to thank Dr Angela Ratcliff who previously delivered a fortnightly visiting locum service to Surat for her services to the community.’’ Dr Buck said Dr Trigger had been working at the Rockhampton Base Hospital before coming to Surat and was no stranger to country areas, having grown up on a cattle property at Biggenden in the Wide Bay area. Dr Trigger said she and her husband are excited to get to know and serve the local Surat community. “I grew up in a small town where it was always difficult finding a permanent doctor,’’ she said. “That’s why I went into medicine. I always wanted to be the permanent doctor in a small country community.’’
