The 2018 100th Anniversary of Armistice at began with a welcome from Muckadilla Community Association President Shannon Crocker at Morning Tea. Official proceedings then began with a Procession from the Railway Reserve led by Bagpiper Howard Arthur and two members of Roma’s Lighthorse Brigade. Flag bearers were former New Zealand Army Colonel Brian Ralph and former Member of the Australian Army Robert Henderson. They were followed by ex-service people and a contingent of Roma Cubs and Scouts with an estimated 100 people taking part in the march in total. They joined another large crowd at the Muckadilla War Memorial where MC David Bowden conducted the service with assistance from the Uniting Church’s Lyn Kajewski, hymn master Mal Parker, speakers Wayne Bryant, Depot Commander of the 25th Battalion, Robert Menz, Immediate Past President of RSL Roma Sub Branch, Cr Cameron O’Neil and Ms Ann Leahy MP, Member for Warrego. David Cooper recited the Remembrance Prayer and Greg Shaw, President of Roma Rotary, the Ode. The wreath Laying was led by Mrs Natalie Golder while Bagpiper, Howard Arthur, played the Lament. To mark the 100 years of Armistice the names of several Muckadilla World War One Soldiers were read with their place of Enlistment and War Service. Then followed a historic moment for the Muckadilla District - the Dedication of the new Harry Murray VC Wall. Mrs Natalie Golder, Cr Janelle Stanford and Harry Murray’s daughter Clem Sutherland and Senator Christ Ketter all made touching speeches. A Lone Pine Tree was planted by Mrs Sutherland to mark the occasion. A luncheon was held following the Dedication where a chair draped in an army uniform stood silently in the corner as an ode to the Unknown Soldier. The Muckadilla community are to be commended for their hard work in researching, securing funds and organising this important new tribute to the region’s service people.

Mitchell | Amby | Mungallala After 16 years Caulfield Cup Race Day returned to the Mitchell Racecourse. With chances of storms the races were put through early, as it turned out the day was a great day for racing with the track in excellent condition and the crowd came along and enjoyed the day of racing and fashions and stayed on late into the night. The club also celebrated the connection of mains power to the course, a process two years in the making. The project received funding from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund, Maranoa Diggers Race Club and the Maranoa Regional Council. Ann Leahy MP, Member for Warrego was on hand to unveil the plaque. The club remembered two members who had passed away during the year, Barry Caskey and Estelle Taylor. The Caskey family presented the winning connections of the Booringa Cup in recognition of Barry’s 40 plus year commitment to the club. New entrance signage was also erected in honour of the Diggers and Nurses who served. The club thanks everyone involved in another successful race day and see you again on October 19, 2019 for more racing fun!

Four lovely young ladies, Priscilla Cicero, Monique Ramsay, Jade Tetlow and Calista Hanna, dressed in long elegant gowns along with their very handsome partners and attendants made their Debut on October 27. The Debutantes and their partners danced beautifully and were a picture of elegance, grace and refinement. They were presented to Reverend James Hall, and Matron of Honour Mrs. Margaret Maudsley. Guests for the evening were Mayor Tyson and Mrs. Natalie Golder.

The hall decorations were remarkable and included large dream catchers hand made by the Cicero family. With official proceedings over, the Monte Carlo dances were popular and the multi-draw raffle was drawn. The committee would like to thank everyone who supported the raffle or helped with the Ball.

The ICPA Queensland State Council held their mid-year meeting in Mitchell over November 3-4, 2018. The Mitchell-Tomoo/Dunkeld branch were delighted to host the councillors, at Mitchell State School. Member for Warrego, Ann Leahy MP was pleased that the meeting was held in her electorate and joined the ladies for lunch on Saturday. On Saturday evening, 50 people enjoyed a delicious meal on the Spa deck featuring an #ICPA grazing platter made by member Kylie Douglas. Long-standing members Kate Twist and Eunice Campbell were surprised with awards on the night. Kate received life membership for her service and Eunice’s involvement earnt her a 20 years long service award. The dinner and mid-year meeting were fantastic and enjoyed by all who attended.

St Patrick’s School held their last fundraiser for the year, the annual Fete on November 10, 2018. There was entertainment for everyone with a performance from the Mitchell Academy of Dance, ham

wheels, raffles and auctions. Plus lots of fun stalls and novelty activities, yabby races, cow pat lotto (Mason Light was the lucky winner and even a rogue sheep at one point. Santa also made an early pre-Christmas appearance. The Shot Foxes kept everyone entertained well into the evening with Nathan Moody keeping everyone inlvoved as MC. The P & F committee would like to thank everyone who helped, too many names to list, caring really makes a difference so it wouldn’t have been a success without the most important people….you, the people in our community. Next year’s fete, put it on your calendar now, Saturday November 9th 2019.

Mitchell recently lost John Murray - a local legend, friend to many and beloved husband, father and ‘Poppy John’ to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. John was farewelled in a large and moving graveside service, attended of course by his best mate Minnie the horse on November 1. John will be greatly missed by his family and the local community. His kind and gentle nature, quick wit and big smile may be gone but will never be forgotten.

Members of the Mitchell community and visitors gathered at the Cenotaph in the Memorial Park to mark the 100th Anniversary of the Armistice which bought an end to The Great War. The service was ably organised by acting RSL President Darryl Betzien with assistance from Gerry Bahre and a speech by Cr Jan Chambers. Cr Chambers spoke of Sir John Monash’s inspirational and key victory at Le Hamel. Wreath layers were asked to say a few words about who they were laying the wreath for many touching stories were shared. Everyone was invited to morning tea at the Bowls Club afterwards.

Passionate tourism advocates who attended the four day Outback Tourism Symposium and Awards in

Roma, travelled to Mitchell as part of their familiarisation. Booringa Action Group, Great Artesian Spa staff and Council’s Local

Development Officer, Jane Fenton were delighted to show the delegates around Mitchell after they relaxed in the Great Artesian Spa and had a healthy lunch on the deck. Tour Guide Jeff Watson, took the guests on a ‘Jeff Watson Mystery Tour’ and showed them the sites at the Kenniff Courthouse & Kenniff monuments – a highlight was viewing the drovers in action. Ann Leahy MP was also on the tour and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Roma hosted the Small Museums conference in October and as part of the their experience in the Maranoa, attendees visited the Yumba and Booringa Heritage Museum after attending High tea at the Great

Artesian Spa Mitchell. Cr Chandler and Jane Fenton from MRC hosted the guests who said they were overwhelmed with the quality of both museums. They also thoroughly enjoyed a welcome from NAIDOC Elder of the Year, Aunty Lynette Nixon.

The Members of the Mitchell Hospital Auxiliary would like to Thank Everyone who supported their Melbourne Cup Luncheon. The numbers were down this year but those who braved the

dreadful heat had an enjoyable day with great company. The Lucky Door Prize was won by L.Phillips. $5 sweep was won by M. Kerslake and the $2 was won by L.Hudson.

Members enjoyed discussing the recent State Conference at their last meeting. Bags made from the Learn to Crochet sessions were shown and Shirley Hart ’s beautifully hand-dyed wool was a point of interest. The branch’s final meeting will be held on December 19 at Jennifer Crocker’s home.

The 2018 Melbourne Cup Luncheon hosted by Injune Churches Together has been deemed by event goers as a fantastic success! Over 100 people participated on the day by either attending the event or booking takeaway meals. The Amanda's Choice Fashion Parade was compared by Cas Sorensen and showcased some gorgeous outfits that are all available in store at 111 McDowall Street, Roma. The Prep to Year 4 Injune State School Students, with their Teacher Leah Scott, performed the Australian National Anthem, My Highland Goat, and Give Me a Home Among The Gum Trees. Their singing and accompanying actions filled the audience with delight! The ICT Melbourne Cup Organising Committee, comprised of Marg Perrett, Rita Jackson, Muffy Mansfield, Jenny Girle, Sue Telford, Jenny Coggan and Rebecca Benham, were all extremely happy with the participation and funds raised for the Injune community church. "We would like to sincerely thank all of the people who have volunteered their time, cooked delicious foods and donated prizes to the 2018 event. There are many many people working behind the scenes, too many to name, they know who they are and our community is so grateful,” said Marg Perrett, Chairperson of the Injune Churches Together Management Committee. The major raffle prize of a return flight to Brisbane, donated by Maranoa Travel, was won by Christy Kelly of Injune, while Kathy Jones and Colleen Price each won $50 vouchers from local businesses. Best Dressed Gentleman prize, donated by Landmark Injune, was awarded to Des Warrian of Injune. Best Dressed Lady prize, donated by Injune Newsagency, was awarded to Vicki Bell of the Arcadia Valley.

One of Injune’s most anticipated nights of the year is on again on Friday December 7 with Injune’s Local Ambulance Committee’s annual ham spins. Held at the Bowling Club the night is a festive fundraiser for the local committee who does so much to support the Injune Ambulance. There will be a multi-draw raffle as well as plenty of hams to win. Injune local Shirley Nayda will once again be looking forward to the night as for the past two years she has been the major prize-winner. In 2017 Shirley won a two-night stay at Takaraka resort! Thanks to everyone who sponsors the Local Ambulance Committee.

The Men’s Shed exhibition at the Injune Creek Gallery winds up on November 28 marking a successful month for the group, which also received a $35,000 grant towards the construction of their shed. Next at the gallery it is the women’s turn to shine. Photographers Katrina Ayers and Katarina Silvester will present Woman2Woman – a collection of images showing local rural women, drawing attention to the hidden experiences of womanhood. The exhibition will open on Friday November 30 at 6pm and everyone is welcome to attend.

Congratulations to Injune locals who reached significant milestones recently: Sue Laycock and Fiona Vincent for twenty years at the Maranoa Regional Council, Wendy Armitage for ten years at the Maranoa Regional Council and Ian and Claire Wilson for fifty years married!

The South West Hospital and Health Service held their annual Staff Excellence Awards on October 29 in St George and two of Injune’s locals were recognised. Community nurse Karel-Anne Collie, who is the 2018 Injune Citizen of the Year, received a Specialty Award and Gloria Mercer was celebrated for 45 years of service to the Injune Hospital. Thanks and congratulations to Karel-Anne and Gloria. The Hospital Auxiliary recently donated a 65” television to the hospital, which will be used to hold movie nights for the oldies. The Injune’s Community Advisory Network (CAN) also advises that donations of toothbrushes and toothpaste are required by the hospital for emergency patients.

On Sunday November 11 Injune paused with the rest of Australia to remember 100 years since the guns fell silent to mark the end of World War 1. Approximately 60 people attended the Armistice Day ceremony at the Injune Hall to remember those who have served us in all wars. Wreathes were lain by Peter O’Connor (representing the Unknown Soldier), Fiona McCaffery (WW1), Graham Girle (WW2), Chris Armstrong (Korean War), Russel Allen (Vietnam War) and Lance Nayda (Iraq and Afghanistan). Fiona McCaffery read the Requiescat, Lance Nayda read The Ode, Margaret Perrett gave the benediction, Peter O’Connor gave the commemorative address and student Emily Bidgood recited In Flanders Fields. On hand to lead the hymns and national anthem were singer Mandy Walker and saxophonist Jess Schofield. A sausage sizzle was held after the ceremony. At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, we will remember them.

The community came together recently to celebrate the history of the Wallumbilla Memorial School of Arts Hall. The event was hosted by the Wallumbilla Town Improvement Group, Woodfordia Inc and the Maranoa Regional Council. Markets, Wallumbilla School Bands, barbecue and bar, decorations, displays of memorabilia all encouraged a good crowd to gather before the lively performances. The headline acts were Harry Jakamarra and his brother Elwood Gray from Australia and Madison Violet from Canada entertained the crowd with a fun night of contemporary and folk music. MC Ree Price introduced the night with some of the history of the Wallumbilla Hall explaining that the funds were raised as early as 1925 by Sports Days and a Poster Ball. By 1931 the Hall was in use with one of the highlights being a three-act play called “Mrs Buzby’s Boarders” to raise funds for the Methodist Church. A delicious supper was provided at intermission with a chance to view the memorabilia and chat to the artists. Congratulations to the Wallumbilla Community for a well organised and delightful night celebrating the history of Small Halls.

On a warm Saturday morning a good crowd gathered to celebrate spring in Yuleba at St Andrew’s Anglican Church. A unique Wedding Gown display, “Walk Down Memory Lane” was the highlight of the Fair. The display was a collection of Wedding Dresses from 1947 to 2009, providing a glimpse of different styles over the years including one traditional Japanese Wedding Kimono. The quality of the display and dresses impressed everyone. The exhibition was supported by photographic displays depicting the history of Yuleba and wedding memorabilia. Everyone was impressed with the quality and the beauty of the dresses displayed. Gardeners entered a floral art competition – an arrangement in a teapot, vase and a best single rose added lots of colour. CPB recently donated a second AED (Automated External Defibrillator) to the Yuleba Community. An AED is vital for the reversal of a cardiac dysrhythmia which is often the cause of a cardiac arrest leading to death. Lana Jeffrey (Administration) and Eloise Archer (Operations) met with members of the Yuleba Development Group and presented the AED to Karan Hibbs. The Defibrillator will be a mobile unit that can be taken to functions in the community or emergency situations while waiting for an ambulance. Lana said that CPB is keen to be able to support the Yuleba Community and are looking to be more involved locally going forward. CPB is an

international company working to install infrastructure for the gas industry at 36 km north of Yuleba in the Reedy Creek and Combabula areas.

Remembrance Day, 11th November 2018 was commemorated in Jackson with the dedication of a memorial in recognition to all those from the Jackson, Noonga and Wolleebee districts who have served their country in times of war. It will serve to recognise lives lost, the anguish caused and the sacrifices made by the men who enlisted in the World Wars as well as their families left behind. Thirty-four men from the Jackson and Noonga districts served their country in World War 1 as well as seven settlers from the Woleebee area. Five men were killed in action. There are forty-eight names on the World War II Honour Roll in the Jackson CWA Hall. More than 60 residents and visitors were in attendance for the Memorial Dedication by Maranoa Regional Council Mayor, Tyson Golder and Commemorative Addresses by Brett Conroy and Lois Canning. The ceremony was followed by lunch in the CWA hall which was a wonderful opportunity for all to catch up.

Jackson and Noonga Community Council Meeting The next meeting will be held on Monday December 3, 2018 at Noonga at 10.00am following morning tea. This will be the final meeting chaired by Brian Sinnamon and minute taking by Fiona Sinnamon. Please consider volunteering for these roles. Ladies high tea During mental health week, the Maranoa Regional Council invited Helen Everingham to address several communities within the region under the heading of “Creating a value-added future’. The basis of Helens talk was to “look at the things you value, things that are important to

your way of living and the life you wish to lead. And to look at ways to implement your values and standards. Noonga was fortunate to be included in the tour and to make it really special, ladies were able to enjoy a high tea with all the trimmings! Catering The association recently catered at the “Akuna” clearance sale. The Noonga shade was well utilised by patrons who could enjoy a sausage sizzle, piece of cake or a cool drink during the sale. Presbyterian Church Services at Noonga For too many years to count Terry and Margaret Holland have been involved and conducted the Presbyterian church services at Noonga. Terry and Margaret have sold the Post Office in Wandoan and are moving on. Terry recently preached his last service at Noonga Hall and we photographed this momentous occasion. Laurie Peake will be taking over the helm. Miles High School Awards Congratulations to Cory Leahy who received Dux of Year 8 and the Silver Sports award for Orienteering and Payton Leahy who received runner up Year 9 Dux. There are some very proud parents here at Noonga! Christmas Tree Noonga’s community Christmas tree combined with the Sinnamon’s farewell will be held on Tuesday December, 18 at 6.30. The Association would like to thank the council for providing funding for the Christmas Tree. Noonga’s Old Time Family Dance Celebrating 90 years since the hall was erected, the decorations and theme of Noonga’s old time Noonga Dance will reflect the diversity and development of the Noonga

district as well as the history. If you have any photos or memorabilia of the hall and Noonga (which I haven’t already got) please email them to Fiona Sinnamon at [email protected]. The dance will commence at 8.00 pm and music will be provided by Sound Elite. Farewell Fiona This will be my last “Noonga Notes”, thankyou to Pen and Tony Hindman who have volunteered to continue keeping you up to date with all the Noonga News. Editor’s Note: Fiona has done a sterling job of sharing all the exciting and important things that happen at Noonga with the broader Maranoa community. On Saturday November 10, 2018 community members and special guests gathered at the Cobb & Co Changing Station to celebrate the opening of the new look “All Among the Wool” exhibition. Although the exhibition has been on display for many years, recent efforts by a volunteer committee have seen major upgrades to the display. For the past 12 months volunteers have been meeting regularly to conduct further research into the industry and have worked hard to bring it to fruition. “All Among the Wool” charts the history of the sheep and wool industry in the Surat district, offering a remarkable selection of stories, photographs and historical items. Through the lives and experiences of three local shearing families the industry has been brought to life in this educational exhibition. Cr Puddy Chandler opened the exhibition and Dr Brian Crozie of Crozier Schutt Associates, Museum, Historical and Heritage consultants travelled to Surat to hold a workshop on creating exhibitions. Be sure to drop into the Cobb & Co Changing Station for a look at “All Among the Wool” and many other exciting exhibitions on display.

In late October local school boys Noah & Paul Walsh (pictured below) ventured off to compete in the QLD School Sport 13-19 years Championships in Brisbane. A venture that proved successful. Noah won gold in both the 100m and 200 events with brother Paul taking home the bronze in both events. The boys are now off to the Australian All Schools Athletics Championships in Cairns from the December 7-9, 2018. The community of Surat extends their congrat-ulations to the boys on their achieve-ments and wishes them all the best in Cairns. We will keep you posted with results when the boys come home.

Locals, school children & RSL members gathered at the foot of the Cenotaph to lay wreaths and pay their respects to the men from the district who have given their lives for our country. The Cenotaph, like so many others, has played an important role in the town’s history and has serves as a gentle daily reminder of the local lads who went off to fight for their country and did not return. The Cenotaph, a Cross of Remembrance was unveiled by Surat residents in 1931. It represented the spirit of those who had given their lives and it bore the inscription: “Their Names Liveth for Evermore”. The diggers of Surat and district who had come back did not want their names on the Memorial, but were anxious that it should be representative of their fallen comrades. This excerpt from The Western Star, dated Saturday November 14th, 1931 describes the inauguration of the Surat Cenotaph.

“The monument has been erected in a most conspicuous portion of the town, and the design chosen by the War Graves Commission was selected by the committee responsible. It may be described as a white column, mounted on a solid base, octagon shaped, a plain cross near the top, and the column surmounted by a glass globe, which has electric light installation, and will serve as a beacon to travelers. Two of the panels on the octagon base bear the names of fourteen men who enlisted from the district, and who gave their lives in the Great War. A centre panel bears the simple inscription, “Their Names Liveth for Evermore.” Rev. G. A. Reid (Roma) who was present, and one of the speakers at the ceremony, in congratulating the committee responsible for selecting the monument, said it would be an honor to the district. It was something plain; something white and pure; something that would not need a deal of attention or polishing. It was something that with each shower of rain would sparkle in the sunshine. It was substantial, and would last many years.”

The Cobb & Co Store Museum has also put together a small exhibition for the occasion. Be sure to drop in as you drive by and follow the story of how the Surat community honoured their fallen sons.
