About the AuthorDean Shane CassemBorn in Charleston, W.Va. to an immigrant father from Lebanon, DeanShane Cassem picked up his first cue stick at age 15. His father andgrandfather before him had Cassems restaurant in Kanawha City, asuburb of Charleston, which is the state capitol of West Virginia. Fromage 15 to age 20, except for a short stint in Viet Namn, Shane hardly puthis cue down and by age 20, had placed second in the annual Virginiastraight pool tourney (1966). In his twenties, his game went stale fromstaying in the bars and out of the rooms where stiffer competition wouldhave honed his game. His stroke subsided completely until his mid thirtieswhen he resurrected his game and won the Coors statewide Texas 8-ballChampionship in Houston in 1981. Directing his energies to a new wife, his church, and an interior wall and floor-covering business in the mid tolate 80s, his game went dormant again until he sold his business andreturned to school. At age 48, he completed his undergraduate work intheology, and earned Masters degrees in Marriage & Family Counselingand Christian Education. During that time, he developed his writing skillsand has since become the most prolific writer of pocket billiard fiction inAmerica. Shane has five Carter Keating novels nearly ready forpublication: Breakthrough, Resurrection, Backrooms, Twist of Fate andTrade-off. Readers will see Twist of Fate in the bookstores by November2002. In addition, he has recently created two new characters; SkinnyMalone and Kelsey Maynard. Currently, Shane also has a Marriage andFamily Counseling practice. He and Mary, his wife of fifteen years, live inFort Worth, the setting for his ongoing Carter Keating Series. Shane hasone daughter, Vickie Linn, a son-n-law, Brian, and a preciousgranddaughter, Shelbie Linn. You may visit Shanes web sites at;www.carterkeatingnovels.com or creativecounselingconcepts.com

WE WERE IN WILLIES POOL PARLOR ACROSS THE street from theglass factory along the ship channel close to Houston. Dave Wakefieldand I sat in vinyl-padded chrome armchairs in front of a four and a half bynine-foot pool table cradled under a six-foot overhead light. The clackingsounds of colorful, colliding pool balls mixed with a chattering crowd tomute any semblance of quietude. Fifteen other tables fronted us in thesmoke-filled room as Jimmy, the Stick, Gadwell studied his next shot.Guys absolutely incredible! I muttered reverently, and watched asopaque wisps of cigarette and cigar smoke snaked up to the muted ceilinglights and created an ambiance I had never seen before. The language, the people and the place were all new to me.

Aint you the smart one, Wakefield growled. His thick glassesbubbled his eyes to twice their size on his pale, skinny pocked-markedface. Sniffing like a guy with a bad case of allergies, he lifted his headback and scooted his glasses up his nose and said, the man plays poollike Tiger Woods plays golf; hits the same stroke, the same shot everytime. Never misses. Pause. Not much, anyway.

The two of ya play much? I asked.About six feet tall with frail shoulders over a lean, bony body,

Dave Wakefield was only twenty-one, but looked older. A week earlier,Id met him while fishing on a river bank a few blocks away. He hadrecognized me from some of the local junior high sports events.

Lots of times, Carter, he scoffed. After all, he gives me theseven and eight.

Seven and eight?Looking at me cross-eyed like Id failed to recite my ABCs properly,

he said, he can only make the nine ball to win, doofus. Me, I can win bymaking the seven, eight, or nine.

I gulped as my eyes widened. You have three chances to win!Yep. he snarled, as his eyes fixed hard on Gadwells every

move. And he still wins? I said ignorantly.Ya been watchin. Whadaya think?God.Not really, but hes good.I straightened up in my chair, clasped my hands with my elbows

on the armchair and stuttered, H-h-how good is he, Dave?Wakefield sighed, then rolled his eyes reflectively and replied.

He n Dunbaum from downtown, n Bud Hegis in Dallas three of the bestin the east, some of the best in the country.

My eyes globalized, my mouth opened wide.Yep. Wakefield added, looking around the crowded room,

nobody here can touchim, other than Cigar and the Thin Man, n its stillnot really a match if they play for a while.

Cigar Kartier and Russell, the Thin Man, Case, both in their lateforties, were playing on table eight three rows over. An hour before, Idwatched in awe as they consistently ran the table every time they had agood shot.

BREAKTHROUGHA Short Story by: Dean Shane Cassem

Part 1

Gadwell eyed his next shot. He had a straight-in shot on the twothe length of the table after making four balls on the break. The cue ballstood five inches off the back rail, six feet away from the two, which wasabout a foot and a half from the far corner pocket. Bumped cataclysmicallyby Gadwells thunderous break, the nine ball had popped out of the rackand swooped down the table until it eventually sat on the lip of the lowercorner pocket. Another full rotation and it would have gone in the hole.

The four, six, and eight remained, and oddly enough were stackedtogether in a tight cluster in the center of the table.

Wakefield chuckled confidently, Aint no way out for him on thisone, he muttered. Its almost impossible to make the two and break outthe cluster. He shifted his eyes to me, then leaned back in his chair andwhispered in my ear. Making the two the length of the table off the railstough enough. His lip turned up greedily as he added, his only optionwill be to play safe and leave me at least a shot on the nine on a carom.

I pursed my lips then said, Not even the Stick can get out of this, huh?

Nope, Wakefield replied, no matter what he does Ill have ashot at the nine even if its a combination or a billiard shot.

Gadwell, tall and thin as a pine tree at about six three and one-seventy, studied the shot with a steely calm demeanor. Like an eaglescanning for prey, he leaned over the table and eyed the shotcircumspectly. Then, squatting down, he squinted at the two like acarpenter eyeing his finished work. Still not through he rose up anddanced around the table and leaned in and looked at the cluster again. Finally, frowning a Clint Eastwood-like frown, he leaned back with thecue and seemingly agonized over the shot.

Suddenly he nodded slowly almost as if he had finally picturedthe shot perfectly in his mind. Then, after exhaling a deep volume of airhe relaxed his shoulders and went back to the cue ball.

Setting himself squarely, he confidently jacked his stick and strokedthe cue ball so that the cue stick drove down low to the base of the ball.Smiling cockily so that he showed a missing front tooth, he blurted outalmost like Babe Ruth calling his home run shot, nine in the corner onthe draw! (continued on page 19)

Montel Wins Garden City OpenBy: Pete Cue Ball Quande

June 15-16, 2002Missoula, MT

Edwin Montel of Calgary, Alberta put his world class nine ball skills ondisplay June 15th and 16th at Cue Balls Billiards in Missoula, Montana.Edwin hardly seemed to work up a sweat as he effortlessly blew through

a field of 31 players from Canada, Idaho,Washington and Montana. The finals werent without a good deal ofexcitement, however, and all of ussweaters were treated to some excitingmatches. Dave Williams of Brewster,Washington, defeated Nick Kruger ofCalgary 9-8 to earn a shot at the driversseat. Nick went over to the losers side ofthe bracket to face Jeff Boucher ofHelena, Montana. This match was alsoa proverbial sweaters delight with Nickprevailing 9-8. Nick has a rematch withDave Williams, who was defeated 9-3 byMontel for the drivers seat. Once againKruger and Williams go hill-hill but this

time Williams comes out on the short end of the stick, losing 9-8 to Kruger. So Nick and Edwin square off for the title and Edwin put on a show for usall winning 9-3 and taking most of the cheese back to Calgary. Edwinis a real treat to watch and his greatness at billiards is only surpassed byhis pleasant, down-to-earth demeanor. The entire field displayed greatsportsmanship and was a fun weekend for all.We will shim and balance all of our tables and replace the bees wax withputty. Look for that and new Simonis 860 for the 24th Annual MontanaState 9-Ball Open Championship in October. Special thanks goes toColleen Lolo Murphy for being my tournament director and Bill Madsenfor assisting her.

In Memory Of ... Johnny Braswell

Northwest Player Lost To CancerBy: Clay Skidmore, McQs Billiards

May 29, 2002Today started just like any other day. The skies were partly cloudy andthere was just a hint of rain. I walked in the poolroom around 4:00pm toplay my weekly game of straight pool, but there was something different.I just didnt feel right, in fact, I can never remember when there was atime that I quit in the middle of a set, except today was that day. As theevening moved forward the poolroom stayed fairly quiet. In fact it was alittle too quiet since Wednesday is half price pool night and it is usuallypretty busy.As the night moved closer to closing time I received a phone call fromBob Manchester. As I answered the phone, it took a few seconds for himto respond. I could sense a shaky tone in his voice. His message wasclear and it struck me in the heart. Clay, Johnny Braswell died tonight. Idont have a date on the funeral but I will let you know. I said, Thanks forthe call Ill let the boys know. As I walked around the poolroom to tell theplayers, it became harder and harder to do, with each person Iapproached. For those of you that didnt know Johnny, he was the nicestman you would ever meet. On the pool table he was the ultimategentleman. He was also a solid competitor and a great sportsman. Hefought his cancer for over a 10 year period and on May 29th he lost thatfight. Johnny is a man that will be greatly missed. My staff and myselfwant to express our condolences to the Braswell family. His list of friendsis long and Im sure there wont be a day that goes by that we dont thinkof him. Thank you Johnny for being our customer, but most of all thankyou for being our friend. You will be missed.

I met Danny Schofield when he was doing what he loved second best, working on pool cues at a tournament. I showed him a pool glove I had

made and we became friendsinstantly. He wore the glove Imade just for him until it had moreholes than material left. Dannytold me it was the mostcomfortable glove he ever wore.I soon learned that his first lovewas playing pool! Anyone whoknew him knew why. He was anexcellent player. Even when hishealth was failing, you had towatch out, he was not an easymark. He made the game lookeasy. Danny taught me so muchabout the game of pool. He wasa kind teacher, and a terrific

partner and always very patient. He was one of the best sportsmen Ihave ever known. He was always first to tell you, Great shot, nice leave, good game! Danny taught me how to read a table, that alone improvedmy game more than I could ever imagine. I didnt know Danny very long.I wish it could have been longer. The pool world lost a great fan, sportsman and teacher. I would like tothink that when Danny went to heaven, he met the champs like, MinnesotaFats and Willie Mosconi. And I am sure he said, ?Rack um up!?Break and run Danny! We will all miss you! - Renee Howard

Different places and different faces coming together with a common bond.Sharing that special feeling , playing the game of which were so fond. Some people are kinda special, in a certain mystical way. Theres a flamethat burns inside them, you can tell by the way they play. The gamecalled pool may touch your soul and you strive to give it a name. You mayjust become the chosen, the keeper of the flame. So you take the flameand pass it on cause its part of the master plan, to share and care forothers, Dan Schofield was such a man.Often he would joust upon the green field treating victors and vanquishedthe same, the tourney is over and the field is now dark, another day inanother place he will rejoin the game. - Ken Goodwin

My special memory of Dan was watching him with his grand daughters. He really loved them and was very good to them. - Love Mary

Dan Sr. was such a wonderful Grandfather to Alex, Kayla and Ana! Heloved and supported them and my sister so much, I was never able tothank him adequately. He was loved more than he will ever know andmissed more that you can ever understand. - Misty Tappen

One of my greatest memories of Dan dad, was the way he could playpool with his cane. He was a wonderful man, loved and dearly missed. Tina Johnson

My Grandpa and my dad taught me how to play pool, that was fun. Love Kayla

My special memory of Grandpa is he really liked to play pool. ForChristmas he gave me a pool case. I got a red one, Amber, my step-sister, got a blue one. Well, a couple of days later we played pool, and Icarried it everywhere. - With love, AlexDan Sr. had a kind and caring soul, he lived for pool and his grandchildren,I think thats what kept him going so long. His only problem in life was thathe couldnt say no to anyone. Having money and material possessionsdidnt mean anything to Dan, giving of himself to other people was whatwas important to him. He did more for pool in our area than anyone, andhe touched everyones heart that he came in contact with. He was lovedby all, and he will surely be missed by all. - Bob and Jackie

Independence DayHot dog, anyone? Perhaps some ice cold watermelon? Day off

work, for sure. Boatride or fishing? Maybecamping; maybe golf, horseshoes or tennis. Maybejust home and fun activities with the family.Wait! Hold real still and listen really harddeep beneath the clamor of our rushing torecreate ooh, cant quite catch it THERE itis! Drumbeats, heartbeats. Cries victory ordeath? Both. So hard to hear them. Insulatedby obtuse blindness, we happily partake of thefruits, trampling on the dust of the providers.

But, that isnt fair, is it? After all, once a year, we do wave theflag around and proclaim our freedom loudly and spectacularlywith thousands of dollars worth of fireworks. Can YOU see therockets red glare within those wonderful explosions of sparkles?Do you hear the cannons within the noisemaker booms? Do youweep when you hear a young person sing our National Anthem?Hopefully, we thank all those who have given everything frommind to limb to life each time we jump in our car to run off to atournament; or when we dash to the airport for a trip acrosscountry, bounded only by time and financial constraints insteadof guards and checkpoints. Or when we gather freely in largegroups for tournaments? Well, maybe we dont remember tothank them. But we can feel them crowding around us when theflag is raised. There is probably not a single true American whocould not see them among the rescue crews in New York.I was recently privileged to attend a program honoring formerPOWs. Those ex-POWs in attendance fought in WWII.Standing with those men who live daily with their sacrifice wasa tremendously humbling honor I cannot begin to describe. ThePledge of Allegiance became a proclamation of pride, andacknowledgement of an entire ethos, not just a rote recitationof something ingrained as a child. The Star Spangled Bannerwas led acapella by a 16-yr old Eagle Scout the contrastbetween his youth and their 60 years of post-incarceration wastime-lapse life. His beautiful soaring young voice pulled me intobustling recruitment centers filled with rushing, vibrant youngmen ready to go to war. His youth proclaimed continuity andeach of those men who gave so much stood a little taller. Inthose moments I was filled with an encompassing love for theincredible human spirit manifest in each of those courageousmen.Recreate this holiday with joy and celebrate the spirit of allthose over the last 200+ years who have given us our lives, andsilently sing them thanks.

Problem: The problem with this table configuration is the two clustersconsisting of the 4- and 6-ball and the 7- and 8-ball.

Commentary: The 4-6 cluster can easily be broken up while shootingthe 1-ball. The 7-8 cluster is a much bigger problem because there areno other balls in the vicinity that can be shot while breaking them up. Thebest chance for a run is to shoot hard when breaking up the 4-6 clusterhoping that one of the balls will go to the other end of the table so that itcan be used to break up the 7-9 cluster. If that doesnt work, try to getshape on the 3-9 combination while shooting the 2-ball. Another solutionis to go directly from the 1-ball to the 2-ball to the 3-9 combination withoutbreaking up the 4-6 cluster. That way, even if you miss the 9-ballcombination your opponent will still have two difficult clusters to deal with.If you get stuck having to shoot at the 7-ball dont despair, there is areasonably good safety possibility. Try to get the cue ball somewhere inthe vicinity of the 5-ball. Shoot the 7-ball into the end rail toward diamondY. The 7-ball will rebound into the 8-ball and stop; the cue ball will gotwo rails to the other end of the table.

Problem: This table has a variety of problems. The cue bail has to bemoved the length of the table in going from the 1-ball to the 2-ball. The 4-and 8-ball are clustered and the 5- and 7-ball are on the side rail near theside pocket. And there is yet another problem; the 3-ball is in the mostdifficult position that any ball can be in (by the rail adjacent to the sidepocket).

Commentary: The 4-8 cluster can be nudged with the cue ball aftermaking the 1ball. The fact that the 5- and 7-ball are not consecutive ballsmakes them a little easier but still difficult. The tighter the comer pockets, the more difficult they are to run down the rail. If the comer pockets arereal tight consideration should be given to banking one or both of theminto side pocket S. The 3-ball is a serious problem. It would be difficultto make it into pocket N, or even bank it into pocket J (because thecue ball will scratch in pocket S). Shooting it into pocket W is difficultbecause it would have to pass the jaws of pocket S.Because of all the problems it might be best to shoot the 1-ball and getposition for a carom shot off the 2-ball into the 9-ball.

S T R A T E G YWhat are the problems for these table configurations?

Problem: The problem with this table configuration is that consecutiveballs are positioned on the same rail. It would be difficult to shoot the 3-ball and get back to that rail for a good shot at the 4-ball. The sameproblem exists for the 7- and 8-ball.

Commentary: The 1- and 2-ball can be pocketed fairly easy. In makingthe 2-ball the cue ball should be positioned for a bank shot at the 3-ballinto pocket S. That should solve the 2-3 problem. When pocketing the7-ball, less than perfect shape can be accepted on the 8-ball becausegetting shape on the 9-ball should be easy (no english is required inshooting the 8-ball therefore, it can be hit more accurately).

Problem: The balls are spread apart in what looks to be an easy table. However, even a top professional would have trouble running this tablebecause the cue ball must travel back and forth the length of the tableseveral times.

Commentary: There are no easy solutions here. The best thing to do isto try to run the balls. If you dont get good shape on a ball, shoot asafety.

Who the hell is Lance Mcgill? And who cares?

Paul Marquez

Its 1993 and Im in a pool hallcalled Chalk and Roll learning mynew past time pocket billiards orpool. Well, like all pool halls thereare tons of experts and very few, good players. Being a student ofthe martial arts I have learned thatthere is no bad information, thereis only information. We choose theinformation we want to keep andretain and we discard what we donot want. This system seemsendless when you are working withthousands of self-claimed experts. So you have to start deciding whoknows what theyre talking about. This is when I chose to listen totournament champions like BradGowin and Glen Atwell to developmy fundamentals. To this day Icontinue to mock their behaviorsand techniques at the table. I thenstarted to practice countless hoursshooting in balls, playing withEnglish and watching tournamentplayers. I became a pool halljunkie, I even took a job at Chalkand Roll so I could receive freetime. This is when I met him, anawesome presence with a sincerefriendly certainty, Lance Mcgill. OTB

Who was this guy? He checked outsome balls for himself and beganbanking, and I mean banking,! onerail, two rails, three rails you nameit. It was amazing, trust me on beinga real player when I say amazing! Iapproached himafter watching forsome time andbegan aconversation, andthis is when I knew Iran into somethingspecial. Hereminded me of aProfessor of MartialArts I once met in anelevator, hispresence at thatmoment stillhumbles me and yet gives me greathonor because he recognized meas a real Martial Artist during anelevator ride. This Lance made mefeel special, his skill at the tablewas so beyond anyone I have everseen yet his interest was in what Iwas about first then we could talkabout him. His listening skills weretremendous and made me feelgood. These things are importantto me and that is why I mention

them, I hope I dont bore you.Now that you know me, who areyou? My name is Lance and I lovepool. Thats it! I said, Are you aroad player? A trick shot artist? Aball banger? What are you? Yes

I have done and dothose things Thisman speaks inriddles I thought, like many MastersI have met, but ishe a master of thisgame of pool?Well that was in1993 and manydistractions keptme from findingout. Thesedistractions were

things like fighting on an OregonBlack Belt team, opening anoperating a martial arts school, andon top of that practicing andbecoming the player that I amtoday. That by know way meansthat I am a champion but I definitelycan hold my own. Its been nineyears since I have first met Lanceand my information today has beentailored. I know what it takes to win,I know the difference between a

real player and a trick shot artist, and I can recognize if someone hastrue understanding of the game. Iknow now what I had seen in 1993and what I have seen recently isthe most awesome demonstrationof pool brilliance and skill ever! Yesever! A whole new view andunderstanding to the game I havenot touched nor have I seenanyone dare try. Lance makes poolwhat it should be, and amazingadventure of different options andviewpoints. But first and foremostyou have fun, true fun.I know what you players arethinking because I am just like you.Can he run out? YES! Can he playsafe? YES! Can he play under theheat? YES! Can he run a hundredballs? YES! The main reason Ichose to write this is becauseeverybody has so many opinionsand yet never find out forthemselves. I have and I am now astudent . Thank you Lance forhelping me love pool again. This isfor you even if you really dont care.I do and I want them to know.Peace , Paul Marquez

Huebler Cues A Tradition in Excellence Northwest Womens PoolAssociations (NWPA) thirdtour stop June 22-23, 2002in Everett, WA. The eventwas hosted by ShotzesRack N Roll, whose finefood, friendly hospitalityand gracious $750 addedprize purse, wasappreciated by all. Thequestion on everyonesmind was who, in such alarge and competitive fieldof play, would claim thestop as champion.Another question onTournament Director TedWoodwards mind, washow to keep the 52 playersmatches running smoothly so as to finish play on time each day. Avolunteer director over the NWPAs first two events, Ted ran this stop asthe newly appointed Tournament Director for the remainder of the seasonand beyond. With his voluminous experience and skills in managingtournaments, the NWPAs third and largest attended stop to date ranwithout a hitch. Lending to his merit was his assistant Dan Coffman whocontinues to volunteer his time tothe NWPA.The large field of players made fora most interesting event as well asthe onsite television news coveragefrom KIRO 7 and KOMO 4. Therewere players coming from as far asIdaho and Canada; and one visitingplayer from Wisconsin. There wereseasoned veterans, tour regulars, fresh new talent and even a youngprodigy (Allie Shaffer of Seattle,WA) and retired pro-tour memberKerry Impson (back from maternityleave). This bevy of talent aside, the battle to the top of the heapended Sunday evening, whenKimberly Kirk of Tacoma, WA wasdeclared the champion of the event and victor of the $651 spoils. When Kimberly Kirk arrived at the start of the tournament, she arrivedwith a plan to become tour stop champion. With sharp precision, herplan was masterfully executed both days, much to the dismay of heropponents. New to the tour, but certainly not to the tournament scene inthe Pacific Northwest, this seasoned player swept the winners side ofthe board breezing past Linda Carter (7-2), Carol Mellors (7-3), Kim Gates(7-4), and Martha Hartsell (7-4). She maintained her focus to claim winsin close matches against Mary Olson (7-6) and Brooke Demke (7-6).Moving into the finals undefeated, she was then faced with the challengeof Martha Hartsell who had a score to settle from her earlier loss toKimberly.A top player from Oregon, Martha Hartsell maintained a strong presenceon the winners board. Her steady and skilled play led her to wins overJo Woodward (7-5), Linda Silvas (7-6), Becky Rowell (7-3), ElizabethJensen (7-5), and young prodigy Allie Shaffer (7-5) before losing toKimberly Kirk. She then lay in wait for her quarterfinal match with CindyDoty. This was to be a tough match as both opponents are consideredamong the best players for their respective states. This equal match ofexperience and skill was apparent in their set where they traded games,win-for-win. After tying up at 3-3, Martha shifted into overdrive, plowingahead to a 5-3 win over Cindy. Her attention was then set on the finals, where she intended to even the score against Kimberly Kirk. For the finals, Kimberly was hoping for a single race to 7 to maintain herplace as the undefeated tournament champion. However, Martha hadhopes of not repeating results from her last encounter with Kimberly. With tremendous focus and a strong will to win, Martha toppled Kimberlyin their first set with a 7-3 victory. Despite the amazing setback, Kimberlywas not willing to let the loss throw her concentration. Indeed, the lossseemed only to fuel Kimberlys determination and sharpen her focus asshe started the second race to 5 with a fierce 4-0 lead.At the 3-0 mark of the set, Martha had joked with Kimberly that she wasknown as The Comeback Queen in her hometown. Kimberlys responseof Bring it on, seemed an omen. Just when it appeared the matchwould be won, Martha lived up to her reputation by putting herself on the

Geez, Wakefield growled, hes trying to make the two then drawthe cue ball back the length of the table into the nine in the corner.

Uh huh, I said, like I really understood what hed said. When Gadwell snapped his cue downward and followed through,

his wrist flicked smoothly and jammed the stick deftly into the cue ball.Jumping slightly, it shot straight for the two.

Upon impact, the two darted into the upper corner while the cueball paused, then like a shopper deciding which store to go in, made upits mind and finally started a casual crawl back toward Gadwell.

Grow legs, Sugar, Gadwell urged, then leaned back as if to pullthe cue ball along with him. Squatting down, he pulled his tightly clenched, long fingered fist toward himself as if to help the cue ball even more.Come on, Baby! he begged.

The cue ball headed slowly toward the nine like it had romanticeyes for it, then at the last roll it nudged the nine just enough and tappedit softly into the corner pocket.

My God, I gawked.Chriminy, Wakefield snapped angrily, then slammed the butt of

his stick on the floor and disgustedly flipped back his head. His unrulylight hair followed.

Gadwells head jerked up victoriously. A big hyena-type grinwashed across his face. Thoroughly pleased with the result, he did a twostep jig then turned toward Wakefield and said sarcastically, just lucky Iguess.

Wakefields face suddenly washed red, his eyes filled with rage.He popped up from his seat like a rabid dog, looked at Gadwell, pulledout a ten spot from his pocket and slammed it angrily on the table. Dontyou ever miss? he lamented.

Then, like a husband whod decided to leave an argument hecouldnt win, he quickly broke down his cue at the joints and stompedacross the room to where Cigar and the Thin Man were playing nine ball.He grabbed a chair, jerked it around and sat down. With his head down, his eyes bored a moping, raging hole through the hardwood plankedfloor.

Gadwell smiled devilishly, then simply shrugged nonchalantly ashe bent over the table and picked up the ten spot. Then he startedfishing the balls out of the leather pockets.

When all the balls were on the table, he pursed his lips musinglyfor a moment then picked up the cue ball and turned his wrist and snappedit up in the air with his thumb and forefinger. Floating in the air like a topit hit the table and bounced twice, then grabbed the felt and did a reversespin that drove it down the table. The chicanery was tantamount toMeadowlark Lemon spinning a basketball on his finger for several minutes.Gadwell, apparently satisfied with the result, broke down his stick andslipped it carefully into his leather case. Exhaling a large breath, hesmirked to himself and then suddenly turned and faced me.

Mind if I join ya, kid? He said automatically. His tense greeneyes stretched tight.

My face flushed full, my eyes grew big as saucers. I raised my sixfoot frame up in my chair and then stammered, Sure, Stick.

He sat down.I groped for something to say. Wow, Stick, that was something.

How long you been playing? I asked, then bit the side of my jaw, andwaited. At fifteen and very impressionable, I might as well have beensitting next to Mark McGwire.

In The Zone with Blackjack David Sapolis

Not all of us have graced the winners circle, nor have all of us enjoyedthe accomplishment of achieving our ultimate goal. There is one thingthat we all have in common though. We have all missed shots weshould have made. We have all experience the shot that got away.Read through this example, a scenario we have all been through. Weare playing the local hot shot. We have lost to him 9 weeks in a row, andthe weeks we havent lost to him weve stayed home in fear of the usualoutcome. This week is going to be different. Weve kept up with him andmet him at the hill. You run the rack down to the eight ball. You see thatyou have two dead easy shots to make and you will win the match. Yousee what you need to do on the 8 ball and bend over to shoot the shot. You have wanted to beat this guy for a long time and now you have yourchance! You bend over and address the cue ball, and then somethinghappens. You can hear your heart beating in you ears. You feel yourchest pounding. You look from the cue ball to the eight ball, and it nowlooks as if it is fifty yards away. The pocket has shrunk, and your shootingarm starts to shake and quiver. You abbreviate your pre-shot routine andquickly send the cue ball in the direction of the eight ball. You stand upquickly and watch as the cue seems to develop a mind of its own. Thecue ball contacts the eight ball and sends it just wide of the corner pocket. The eight ball travels up table and sits about four inches from the topcorner pocket. Ray Charles can handle this out. You sit down andexperience a myriad of emotions. You say horrible things to yourself. You sit in the chair and beat yourself up as your opponent shoots his wayto victory. You shake his hand, unscrew your cue and start to give yourselfwhat is commonly known as a mental battering.I shoulda done thisI coulda done thatI woulda if I couldaOoooh why I oughttaThat gets us nowhere, and in fact, increases the odds of it happeningagain. What happened? You choked. Happens to everybody. GrillArcher or Reyes long enough and theyll admit to having it happen tothem as well. Choking is part of our development. If we dont experienceit from time to time, we are not human. What causes it? A majority ofthings. Usually choking is caused by what is known as negative internalimmersion. This is usually caused when you lose your temper, but it isalso caused when you are over stimulated by the surroundings or thesituation. When you are in dead stroke, everything is working out foryou. The balls are dropping and you are getting the cue ball to what you

The Art of the Chokewant it to. Everything is going according to plan and you tell yourself thatyou can continue on autopilot, or unconsciously. Choking occurs whenyou become internally immersed in task-irrelevant issues, or cues. Internalimmersion is not always negative, and external immersion is not alwayspositive. It depends on whether the issues or cues you are focusing onare task relevant or not. Understand that when you miss shots or missposition, it is essential that you keep your focus external, there foreavoiding the mental battering. If you lose your temper due to a foul, something your opponent says, etc, it would be wise to shift you focusinternally. Just as playing in the zone is an altered state ofconsciousness, so is choking! When we choke, we lose control of ourthoughts, our behavior and the whole situation. Choking occurs whenwe become so focused on internal cues (thoughts and feelings) that youcannot attend to external task-relevant cues. Many of us become more focused on the outcome rather than the process. We need to focus on what we should be doing as opposed to focusingon what we shouldnt be doing. Direct your attention towards positivecues such as follow through, Focus, Breathe, and Smooth. Youdirect yourself towards the positive without arguing with yourself aboutthe mistakes youve made. Make sure your goals are reasonable. Themore pressure you place on yourself the more negative interference youcan expect. If your goal is to beat this guy next week, ensure that youset sub-goals leading up to the match. You might have to get to finals tobeat this guy next week. Make sure you get there. If you focus only onbeating one opponent, you will find it hard to get your motivation up duringother matches. This can be avoided by having a coach or a mentor toassist you and remind you to remain focused on your newly establishedgoals. By staying focused on the task at hand and not the outcome, yourelieve yourself of the pressure associated with thoughts of a negativeoutcome. When you are able to do this, winning will take care of itself.Remember that every time you take a shot, you run the risk of havingthings go well. Realize that every so often we are going to be placed insituations that will make us nervous. The way we process the stimulationwill determine the outcome. The next time you are in a tough match orfaced with a tough shot, remind yourself that matches are won one shotat a time, and one thought at a time. We dont want to shoot bad shots, and we definitely dont want to think bad thoughts. It not so much thechoking that we need to control, but the factors that lead to it. Above allelse, always give yourself the chance to win!!!

INTRODUCTION:We want to thank you for your support of theSouthern California Womens Billiard Tour(SCWBT). This is the 8thsanctioned regionaltour with the Womens ProfessionalBilliard Association (WPBA), andcomes to you form the vision andhard work of Michael Hurst, alongwith the support of those mentionedbelow. In October of 1999, whilesupporting his wifes desire topursue competitive pool, herecognized a need in the SouthernCalifornia area for serious Womens9-ball competitions on an amateurlevel which would not only providea safe forum for beginner playersto improve their skills, but alsoprovide semi-pro and non-activepro players the stepping stones needed to enterWPBA events and further their competitiveprogress. This tour is the result of a rekindled flame froma smoldering ember of the Southern CaliforniaAmateur Ladies 9-Ball Tour started by a fewlocal women players back in 1991. They useda four-stop, 32 player field format which wassuccessful for the three years of its existence.Since then, a number of local players from thatera expressed their interest in reinstating a tour,

and it is that interest, coupled with Michaelsdetermination to make this wish a reality, thatfanned the flame to start a new blaze in 2000!

These initial four events, whichmake up the first leg of tour eventsscheduled for 2000, will be closelyfollowed by a second leg beginningsometime in July. If you are notcurrently involved with the tour insome way, and would like to beincluded in the second leg as eithera player, room sponsor, additionalsponsor or spectator, pleaseintroduced yourself to Michael andlet him know in what capacity youwould like to become involved. Themore support we receive, the moresuccessful we can become!!Thanks again to all the sponsorsrepresented within these pages(and those without representation).

Your support and contributions have given thistour wings! Let us know if there is anything elsewe can do for you in the future.A special thanks goes out to the followingindividuals for their personal contributions ingetting this new tour off the ground: Stacy Hurst,Stephanie Nakagawa, Darlene Stinson, LynnPutnum, Nancy Henkaus, and several of theWPBA regional tour coordinators. Now that all is said and done: Lets Play Ball!!!- Stacy and Michael Hurst. For more information about playing or becoming asponsor please contact: Mike & Stacy Hurst 949-645-7180 [email protected]

loved every minute of it.The ageless Parica, whose skills never seem to diminish, toyed with each of his seven opponentson his way to the One Pocket crown. He never worked up a sweat, losing only two games in theentire tournament. Falling in order were Mike Mares 3-1, Calvin Keys 3-0, Jeff Heath 3-0, RafaelMartinez 3-0, Mark Haddad 3-0, Kim Davenport 3-0, and finally Amar Kang 4-1. One more title toadd to his hall of fame credentials.

Nine Ball ResultsHawaiis favorite son, Rodney Morris, destroyed the Nine Ball fieldin a similar fashion. Only it took him eight matches to reach thewinners circle. In order the casualties were John Lalo 9-3, SteveLesur 9-2, Chris MacDonald 9-3, Jose Parica 9-3, Santos Sambajon9-6, Mark Haddad 9-4, Rafael Martinez 9-2 and then 11-6 in theoverall final. The only relatively close match was with Mighty MouseSantos, who closed to 7-6 before Rodney shut the door with a twoand out run.In the finals with Rodney on cruise control (something to behold)and a 10-3 lead, he missed his first ball and somehow Rafael puttogether three racks. Too little, too late and Rodney cleaned up thelast rack when Rafael scratched on the break. Its amazing to this observer that players with Rodneys level of

talent are not invited to the World Championships in Wales, not to mention that Jose and Rafaelwere not invited either. Something is wrong with the selection process when three of the greatestplayers on the planet are left out.Another wonderful week in Sacramento at Hard Times, one of Americas greatest pool rooms. Theplayers love playing in the private tournament room with the eight Gold Crown IVs set up byErnesto Dominguez. And the pool fans have tiered and cushioned seating for their viewing pleasure. It doesnt get much better than this.

Cue-ball aim accuracy There isnothing as basic in pool as beingable to make the cue ball go in thedirection you want it to go. Knowingwhere you want to hit the object ballis critical but it doesnt help unlessyou can deliver the cue ball to thatpoint. All the knowledge in theworld wont do any good if yourcue-ball aim accuracy is lacking. The diagram shows a drill forpracticing cue-ball accuracy. Placethe cue ball directly on the headstring one diamond from the side

Place atarget ball (1-ball) onthe rail at the oppositeend of the head string.Shoot for the center ofthe target ball so thatthe cue-ball reboundsdirectly back along itsoriginal path. Any cue-ball error will bemagnified because ofthe round surface ofthe target. This drill can

be made a little moredifficult by placing thecue ball on the rail thusrequiring a rail bridge. To further increasedifficulty, set up thesame shot using thelength of the table asshown by cue-ballposition B with thetarget ball (2-ball) onthe foot rail. Somebottom English mustbe used in order to

make the cue-ball rebound all theway back to the head rail. This isbecause the target ball does notstop the forward rotation of the cueball as the cushion would;therefore, roll is acting in oppositionto its rebound direction.
