Conflicting DatesTournaments are always beingscheduled and the biggest concernwhen scheduling a tournament isconflicting dates. No one wants tohave a large tournamentscheduled on the sameweekend as another largetournament within the samearea. It just doesnt work.On The Break has beenworking with tournamentconflicts and scheduling forfourteen years. Before publishingOn The Break, we had beenpublishing the Pool TournamentMagazine for ten years, which

scheduled tournaments around theregion a full year in advance. Wehave dealt with the problem ofconflicting dates before. The earlier you choose your date,

the more notice is given to othertournament directors thatthere is already somethingscheduled on that date. Ifyou look in the Tournament

Trail (page 30) you will seethat there are listings there for up

to 4 months in advance. We do thisto make everyone aware of theevents planned for certain dates. Our information is always

changing, dates are constantlybeing set, so it is a good idea whenyou choose your date to check withOn The Break toll free at 1-877-285-3099. See if there is anythingthat conflicts. On The Breaks job is topromote cue sports eventsand report on their results. We have no intest in holdinga date or dates open for ourown needs what ever they maybe. If your date does confict withother dates in your area we willadvise you to change your dateand help you set another.

With the interest in pool continuingto grow it is only logical that moreand more tournaments will beavailable to the players. We havealways worked with tournament

directors to schedule dates, and will continue to do so,with no conflicts and it hasalways been successful. Our promise to you the

tournament director, is that ifyou get us your dates as soon

as possible we can tell you whatwould be conflicting at that time.We will then give you all theavailable dates in your area.

The instructional player, a player that givessomething back, by teaching other players how to play this game. Givingideas, suggestions, comments motivational tools, how to handle situations, how to win and most importantly how to lose. Weve all experiencedlosing a game or a match its just part of the nature of the game. The ballssometimes just roll funny. I think everybody that Ive mentioned shouldstand up and give themselves a pat on the back, standing ovation. Justknow that YES, somebody out here appreciates what you do and I wouldlike to thank you for your support, generosity and integrity to the game.

Id like to take this opportunity to thank the advertisers, the leagueoperators, the players and the instructors for giving something back tothe game. Teaching others, showing others, promoting players, doingextra things such as adding money to tournaments, sponsoringtournaments and leagues, as well as, people who service the playingequipment from recovering tables, changing, tightening of rails, tobalancing and making the balls roll true. This has given back somethingto the great sport we all share and appreciate POOL. I want you to knowthat for one player, myself, and Im sure there are hundreds and thousandsof others that appreciate the efforts that are done. Whether its throughadvertising, or just the sheer fact that you open your doors everyday andallow players to come and play on your equipment. And for the players

PART 3In Part One, New friend Dave Wakefield introduces young Carter Keatingto pocket billiards for the first time. Keating watches captively as Wakefieldand Jimmy The Stick Gadwell play nine ball in Willies Pool Palace.Part One ends as Gadwell completes a spectacular nine ball sessionwith Wakefield, smirks cockily as Wakefield stomps off, then pulls up achair next to young Keating for a chat. In Part Two, Wakefield and ToolsSpinard challenge Gadwell and young Keating to an eight-ball match.Keating agrees, fails to make a shot the entire time, and faces the ridiculeof Spinard, Wakefield, Gadwell and the other patrons in Willies PoolPalace. Young Keating swears that he will learn how to play the gamewell.

CHARLEY STURGIS AND I SAT IN FRONT OF THE windows in WilliesCafe. Outside, arthritic looking trees budded along the walkway next tothe glass factory. A cluster of robins hovered at the treetops, darting inoccasionally with a fresh load of straw for their freshly developed nest.Inside at our table, Jacqie, the full-breasted, shapely-hipped youngwaitress had just refilled our coffee cups. As Charley and I talked, hiseyes roamed from the birds to me to Jacquie.

One of the birds, as if to entertain us flew over to the window, perched on the sill and pecked at a small stem. Then, as though it hadentertained us enough, it took off to the trees and dropped its full mouthedstash into a budding nest. Its diligence reminded me of the price Id paidto learn the game.

Three years had passed since that awful, memorable night.Gadwell, thinking my determination was short-lived, sucked up the freetime on the tables and showed me everything he knew about the game, thinking at any time I would quit.

I didnt. And soon the game came to me. And although the lessonscost me a bundle, I couldnt have learned the game any quicker.

Within a short time, even Gadwell himself gloated over the waymy game had developed. Within six months, I had run my first rack. Ayear after that I was hustling the bars. The following year, I had taken onCigar Kartier, who intimidated me and blew me away the first three timeswe played. On the fourth try, I broke the ice and thereafter never lost amatch.

As for the Thin Man, Russell Case, he avoided me, even when hewould have had a lock on the game. Why? I dont know, except that healways stayed away from me as though I was something special.

Charley, the Professor, Sturgis, on the other hand treated me asif I was special. In his time, he ruled the tables along the east coast andwas well regarded among his peers. As the years passed by and hislegs gave out on him, he simply enjoyed watching the game.

The first time I saw him fell shortly after my first day in Willies. Hewheeled around the corner in his leather-seated, black padded wheelchairthen parked in front of the table where I was practicing.

He watched and said nothing that day. And the next, and thenext.

One day I looked up and asked why he was there. He smiled thatquiet disarming smile that didnt show any teeth but lots of cheek andsparkle and said, Youve got the fever, son. His teeth, still white though

About the AuthorDean Shane Cassem

Born in Charleston, W.Va. to an immigrant father fromLebanon, Dean Shane Cassem picked up his first cue stickat age 15. His father and grandfather before him hadCassems restaurant in Kanawha City, a suburb ofCharleston, which is the state capitol of West Virginia. Fromage 15 to age 20, except for a short stint in Viet Namn, Shanehardly put his cue down and by age 20, had placed secondin the annual Virginia straight pool tourney (1966). In histwenties, his game went stale from staying in the bars andout of the rooms where stiffer competition would have honedhis game. His stroke subsided completely until his mid thirtieswhen he resurrected his game and won the Coors statewideTexas 8-ball Championship in Houston in 1981. Directinghis energies to a new wife, his church, and an interior wall

and floor-covering business in the mid to late 80s, his game went dormant again until hesold his business and returned to school. At age 48, he completed his undergraduatework in theology, and earned Masters degrees in Marriage & Family Counseling andChristian Education. During that time, he developed his writing skills and has sincebecome the most prolific writer of pocket billiard fiction in America. Shane has fiveCarter Keating novels nearly ready for publication: Breakthrough, Resurrection,Backrooms, Twist of Fate and Trade-off. Readers will see Twist of Fate in the bookstoresby November 2002. In addition, he has recently created two new characters; SkinnyMalone and Kelsey Maynard. Currently, Shane also has a Marriage and Family Counselingpractice. BREAKTHROUGHA Short Story by: Dean Shane Cassem KRAACK!!!!

by: Paul Marquez

I felt like Fast Eddie looking over my shoulder at this tremendous soundonly to see this punk kid Vincent blasting the rack and taking off hishorse. Except the sound was coming from one of my friends Todd Ruhlen.Todd at this time was an up and coming player in the area receivinglessons at Lance McGills Billiard Academy. Kraack!! What an unfamiliarsound in such a familiar environment. Strange that this caught my attentionso, I mean after all, arrogance and self accompany a player like myselfand I could always beat Todd. Dont get me wrong Todd was good, but aseasoned veteran like myself he was not, so I thought. Kraack!!! I wouldlook over and watch two to three balls go in, the cue on the one ball andif were drawn on paper, he was out. Hmmm? Lance would make someadjustments as if it was not yet there. What could be better than that Ithought? Kraack!!! WOW! It was pretty awesome to witness, Todd and Ithen took a little hike down to Idaho to one my favorite tournaments atBackstreet Billiards. This was a pretty sweet deal for me. Todd would beable to get all the action that I couldnt. I watched him beat player afterplayer even steering away from certain people I didnt think I could beat.Well its a funny moment when you make a jump in your game, you hardlysee it coming and your only proof is in the results. Todd won all his nine-ball action and went undefeated in the tournament, roasting me in theprocess. Players all over kept asking me if he was just playing over hishead, and arrogantly I thought sure, Todd was never this good before.Hmmm? Wait a minute playing over his head for two days? Just face itjack ass this guy passed you up. Damn! That break! Damn that Lance!Does the break really mean that much? Controlling the game from thebeginning, getting more shots puts you in stroke doesnt it? Now I needthe eight because of that stupid break, except guess who signed up forbreaking lessons? Now Im looking for you Mister Todd! Thanks Lance.

COMMENTARY: Before getting into the specifics of the power break Ill offer you a fewguidelines; for those of you that use them you will find them to beinvaluable in the decisions that we find ourselves left to make in closegames.First know that in 9-ball the strongest break wins. This seems to be thecase even when all else isnt equal. It can be the deciding factor in the

Here is a great trick shot that is designed fora nine foot table. Start by racking a full setof balls. Remove the rack. Now remove theback row of five balls. You should have fourrows of balls now. Remove the head ball, the one on the foot spot, and place it whereball X is in the diagram. Ball B is the far rightball in the fourth row. Move that ball intoposition as shown. Now position the five ballsfrom the back row as shown in the diagram. The distance between balls A and B is abouttwo thirds of a ball. Object ball C isobstructing ball X from going into the cornerpocket. Hit the cue ball center with a hardstroke hitting ball A full. Note that the cueball is one half a ball to the right of ball A.Ball A will disturb the line of balls and moveball C out of the way. Ball A then hits ball Band forces ball X into the corner pocket alongthe solid black line. Notice that ball X is aimedalong the dotted line to allow for throw. Thisis one shot that will definitely amaze yourfriends. Keep Strokin Sarge

Hugo GraduatesFrom: Clay SkidmoreSpokane, Washington

On July 27-28, McQs Billiards held another edition of our class C 9-balltournament. 51 players from around the Northwest made the trip toSpokane to compete. Once again there were a lot of new faces, and thefield was very even. Something else that was nice to see was the under21 competitors. Chris Chambers from Wenatchee did his best to win amatch, and at the young age of 12 he just couldnt break through. But thefuture could be bright for this young man so he may need some shades.Another one of our under 21 players was Allie Schaffer. This gal definitelyhas a bright future. Allies first trip here and she finished an impressive 7th

place and she lost a hill/hill match to the eventual winner. Good job Allie!!Its really nice to see the young kids play so if you have a young futureplayer in your household, send them over, its a great place to start. It was also the first trip here for Hugo. Hugo moved through the fieldundefeated though things were never easy. He opened with a 7-4 winagainst Chris Bailey and defeated Tony Rodriquez by the same score. He then had quieted the scare with Allie winning a hill/hill match. Movingon he beat Kevin Brewer 7-5 and survived another hill/hill match withFred Edgar to claim a spot in the winners final. His opposition for the drivers seat was Robert Gonzales who he handeda 7-2 loss to and moved into the finals. He then beat Tony Rodriguez thefirst set 7-3 and collected nearly $600 in prize money. Thank you to allthat played and I hope to see you all Labor Day weekend.

Peeping Tom goes back to one of themost celebrated legends of the Anglo-Saxon period of British history. Leofric,Lord of Coventry, imposed exorbitanttaxes upon his subjects. His wife, LadyGodiva, was sympathetic to thecomplaints of her subjects andrepeatedly pleaded with him to reduce

their tax burden. He refused but eventually, more to make her be quietthan anything else, said that he would cut taxes if she agreed to rideunclad through the streets of Coventry. To Leofrics astonishment, sheaccepted the challenge and, after asking that all townspeople stay indoorsand close their shutters while she rode, she made the ride on a whitehorse. Everyone honored her request except the town tailor, Tom, whopeeped through the shutters and, a legend has it, was stricken blind forhis impudence. And yes, the taxes were lowered.

Indian SummerThe changing of the guard is beginning. Summer, along with hisgang of sports, is edging closer to the changing room, ready todo the Slip-out-the-Back-Jack Boogie when we are not looking.

This is a fun time of the year. Pool leagues arestarting soon. New alliances, old friendships, newsponsors. Right now is the concert hall shufflingin preparation for the music sweet to our ears.Toeing the line for the 20-26 week race to LasVegas. Checking the scores weekly ARGH~!10 points DOWN~! 2 wins UP~! One of best

parts of this process is watching the progress ofall our cohorts as skills continue to escalate and

everyones honing gets razor sharp. My favorite September pool-moment has been when Cheesestournament magazine hit the street. The listings, now only inthis paper, mean ROAD TRIP TIME!! Heading off here andthere playing friends, making new ones over the greens, findinggreat new places to shoot. The book was (& the paper now is)the social calendar of our time, complete with titles and phonenumbers. It is such fun, holding a whole chunk of time andtravels right in our hands! Hmm if I go to THIS one, I can stayat s. If I WIN this one, I can go THERE The magazine waslike a cross between diaries and wishbooks; between journalsand tallysheets, of more than one kind; a compendium of firsttimes, last times, no times, all backdropped by competition.Looking at the tournament lists with various friends produces awhole demographic stat log; who won last year; how many playersusually show; how many of what calibre; what kind of cueball isused; whether or not the tables are maintained; what kind offood is served and how good it is (or not). Then, of course, opening that dialog pops the cap off the stories bin. Our poolculture is so verbal; more so, I think, than most sports. We area kaleidoscope of colorful characters who play and uniqueindividuals who own the rooms we love. This is a mixing cauldronfor some pretty funny or, at the least, interesting incidentswhich only get better with time and telling! At that point, listening becomes nearly as fun as playing.I have to admit that I loved having the tournament magazineavailable; the diary to be; the tourney year-at-a-glance, durableand fit nicely in the large pocket of my case. Yes, Virginia, there is still that old-fashioned little 6-yr old girl whose veryfirst solo recreational excursion was to the library 2 blocksaway So. Where are YOU shooting this weekend?Mary Price, Headingoff

I found this case attached to a gentleman named Mel Larsen atthe BCA Trade show in New Orleans in July. Unique in quality, the attention to detail, the smooth finish to this case with highgloss is phenomenal. He produced this prototype of a shark casefor the unique pool sticks which Mel also has plans for in thefuture. The grain of the zebra-wood has been designed by Mel sothat it would appear that this is a tiger shark. There are real sharkteeth and a real 8-ball in its mouth.Mel describes himself as an artist, inventor, craftsman andobviously he can add cue case designer, to his list ofaccomplishments. Unique would not justify this brilliantly madecase. I have seen hundreds of custom made cues ranging from$1,000 to $10,000 but never a case that would equal the samequality of the cue. This is the exception. All of Mels cases are

made from exotic hardwoods (white wood, zebra woodand tiger wood) from Africa. Believe me you would havea few dropped jaws as well as raised eyebrows if yousported this case into your local pub, tavern, pool hall oranywhere you would go. Mel plans to produce about 100of each case. Each comes with a certificate of authenticityand a number. Prices start at $2,500 but when youconsider that this is all handmade and takes upwards of150 hours to make each case, it is worth the money beingasked. Mel plans to offer a custom made cue with sharkteeth points in them, real shark skin wrap and the buttwill be a sharks head. Only about 20 case and cuecombinations will be offered for sale.Mel feels that most of his buyers would be people who are serious collectors or anybody that just wants to showoff. This is On The Breaks best new product from the BCA Trade Show 2002.

Shark Case

A new challenge for the 8-ball player, easy to rack, simple to use. As the picture indicated you set therack on the table in themiddle between the sidepockets, put the balls inbetween alternating stripesand solids. The object of thegame is similar to theregular 8-ball game whenyou rack them in a triangle. You designate a pocket foreach of the balls you areshooting, either stripes orsolids, followed by the 8-ballbeing last. The players maylag for break or just flip acoin. The player who winsthe flip breaks, then theother player may rotate the rack to a position he likesmaking it harder for a run out. When I played thisgame it appeared at first to be very simple and a runout would be easy. But, as most things are, you willfind that its not as easy as it looks. The angle in whichthe round rack is positioned on the table, to cutting

shots in the side or down to the corner becomes a littlemore difficult as each shot is made. When you miss a

shot it is your opponents turnand the cue ball lies where itis. Fouls are similar to anyball-in-hand rules, scratchesor jumping off the table. Ballscan become very spread outall across the table as thegame continues, making itmore difficult for you to runout or as difficult as it may bein any 8-ball game. I think thisis a great game for kids, family and friends tochallenge each other. It alsogives you a little bit more toconsider when you are trying

to run the table. If you are playing it by yourself, youcan also use it as a half round, racking around theside pockets and corner pockets and do different drillsthat way. It places the balls essentially the samedistance apart. See ad page 20

W W RInsight from Julie Hunter

The WesternW o m e n sR e g i o n a l(WWR) tourhad itsb e g i n n i n g sthirteen yearsago as theN o r t h e r nC a l i f o r n i aWomens tour. The tour wasrun solely bySusie Millerf r o mS a c r a m e n t oand included women players fromthe northern part of California aswell as Nevada. The tour hadhumble beginnings, with upwardsof sixteen players the first two orthree years, by the fourth yearthough the tour had around thirty-two players and was continuing togrow. It was in the fifth year, the tour withmore than thirty-two players, that amutiny occurred. The era ofsingular running and decisionmaking was over and a newstronger, more organized tour wasemerging. Julie Hunterspearheaded the changes bymoving the tour headquarters toCarson City, setting up a board tooversee the tour, establishing rulesand making sure that all the moneys

went back to the players. The name was changed to theWestern Womens Regional tour. That was eight years ago, and thetour has grown to fifty membersnow. Julie Hunter is still thepresident, an unpaid position thaton one else seems to want. TheWWR is a credit to Julies abilitiesto run the tour and also hergenerosity by donating her time andenergy to keep things running. Julienow has help from Linda Silva whocame on board five years ago to runthe tournaments. Lindas creditsinclude running tournaments at theSands, for the USPPA and at bothBreaktime Billiards and FamilyBilliards to name a few. Noweverything is on computer thanksto Linda and that makes Julies life

a little easier. The tour hasfive stops andmost of therooms stay thesame from yearto year.C u e p h o r i a ,Julies room, hosts the tourevery otheryear and shehad a weekendof fun planned.A buffet wasset-up allweekend longfor the players, along withraffles allweekend. TedKidwell wasdonating acustom cue tothe raffle andJulie wasdonating somecues herself.

B e s i d e scues, theraffle willinclude, T-shirts, hats,clocks, videogames andm o r e(estimated atnearly 100items).The objectiveof the WWRis to have alltheir tourstops runsimilarly to

pro events. Rules of play, dresscodes enforced, name tags, scoreboards and check-in timesthat will give all the women a flavorof what a pro-event is like. The tourpays down half the field and holdsa second chance tournament, sothe women really get their moneysworth, and spend a weekend full offun and commeradery. The tour has seen more growthrecently due to the interest of manyof the leagues operating in the area. The San Francisco 8-Ball leagueshave brought in twenty new playersand the San Rafael pool leagueshave held qualifiers and paid feesfor their winners to play in a tourevent.Rumors have been circulatingabout combining the area womenstours (WWR, SCWBT, and NWPA)into one tour with more corporatesponsorships, which would meanlarger tournaments and more prizemoney for the players, withadvancement to the WPBA. Thelargest drawback to this isaffordability. Not all of the womenplaying in the regional tours arelooking to turn pro, most play for theexperience. Travel expenses for acombined tour may make theevents too costly for a lot of thewomen who participate regionally. The combined regional event thatwas first held last year, open to thetop eight players from each of thewomens tours nationwide was a bigsuccess. It is planned for this yearagain on November 22-24, 2002.The WWR is enjoying greatsuccess and as the popularity ofpool increases and with theparticipation of more women in thissport, the tour looks forward to moregrowth.

Felipe Eliminates the CompetitionBy: Nita Saddler, Tournament Director

Spokane, WashingtonOn August 10-11, McQs held their biannual B class 8-Ball tournament. We received 55 men and 6 women in this tournament. We were threeshort of a full field, but that is still good for a summer tournament.Linda Dick again reigned as our top lady taking home $40 and receivinganother $40 for placing 13th. Great job Linda! We had another great field with excellent competition. It was the firsttime Ive ever looked at the board and couldnt tell you who was going towin. Im sure Felipe knew he had his work cut out for him. He had a greatstart beating Hershel Blaylock 5-0, Terry Mercer 5-3, Tim Mandelas 5-2,Ed Hobbs 5-1, Roy Garza 5-1, and Tim Robertson 5-4 to make it to thewinners final against Bobby Campbell. Bobby was definitely no slackerthough and would be a challenge for Felipe.Bobby Campbell was another great starter. He started out defeating HarryPeterson 5-1, Don Hall 5-0, and Larry Allenfort 5-2 before losing to RoyGarza 5-3 to be sent to the B side. From there he continued his race tothe finish, beating Mike Jensen 5-0, Ed Hobbs 5-1, Mike Hodgson 5-0,Roy Garza 5-3 and Tim Robertson 5-1 to go on and play the undefeatedcompetitor, Felipe Claro. Both of these talented players were equallyskilled, but Felipe Claro made his final win in a B tournament defeatingBobby Campbell 5-2. Both men were then bumped to A class and nolonger allowed in our B tournaments.Thank you once again to all our competitors. I always enjoy running agreat tournament for the players. The Pool Table GuyLeo Hancock

QI am a bar owner inWashington and just putin 3 new tables. Afterabout 4-5 months Inoticed the rails arespongy. I asked the

person who supplied the tables about itand was told that it didnt really matteron a bank shot. Is this true? Why are the rails spongy and what canI do about it? I dont play pool myselfand Ive seen your columns in On TheBreak, can you help?

AFor this question I go back to a previous article, worthrepeating! This is a subject that really gets my dander up.Bad rails are bad rails. Doesnt matter on a bank shot? When does it matter then, I ask? I do not know whom youbought the tables from but he is flat wrong or lying. Why

would the industry put so much time and effort in hyping their particularrubber, i.e., Superspeed, AccuFast, etc. Lately I have spent more timeand money replacing worn or bad rubber than I care to admit. Last monthat the BCA trade show I brought up this problem with several suppliers. The only thing I can say now is that it appears there are improvements onthe way. But, I regress. For your problem, there are a couple of things to examine:1. You say the tables are new. If they are new they should have rubberthat is not spongy. Have you had the tables recovered recently? Someclever technicians will swap your rails for a set they have previouslyrecovered in their shop. This sounds great, saves time on the job, butyour brand new tables could have 20-year-old rubber on them. If youhavent recovered recently insist that good rubber be put on the table. Ifthey have been recovered, quiz your tech and insist he either finds yourrails or replaces the rubber and NEVER swaps them again. He can bereplaced! There are techs out there like myself who will do your rails onsite and it is worth the extra time.2. Did you really mean new tables, or could they be older than 5-6years? As I said above, I have recently been replacing a lot of rubber thatisnt much older than that, especially Valley and Dynamo tables(coincidentally, the easiest to swap rails on). This should not be the case.I have an antique Brunswick from 1910 that still has the original rubberAND it is still in good playing shape. This does not mean every set ofrubber should last 100 years. There are different qualities of rubber likeanything else. There are other factors like how well the table is cared for, storage conditions and how knowledgeable technicians are in recoveringthe table. Glue should never touch your rail rubber. Some people usebacked cloth and have to remove the backing when doing the rails, leavinga film of glue which melts the rubber causing them to get gummy andcrystallize.Bottom line is that if the rubber was good when you got the table, itshould not have gone bad that quickly. My guess is a technician foul up.I hope this helps and if you need further help please feel free to call or e-mail us: [email protected]/fax - 253-638-0008 Leo Hancock See ad page 9

Joey Gray, 2000and 2001 14 & Under National Runner-Up, didnot let his movement from the 14 & Underbracket to the 18 & Under Open hold him backfrom success on the table. Gray took off fourstraight matches against Lars Vardaman 11-10,Dominic Riccobene 11-3, Sylver Ochoa 11-7 andShane Winters 11-0 before being upset by BeauRunningen 2-11. Gray made his comebackthrough the losers bracket dispatching 2001 18

While avictory of 11-1 overStephen Bishop gavelight to Grays secondchance at Runningen inthe finals, a masterfullycrafted win overRunningen by 11-10 wasnot enough to grasp thetitle. Runningenrecovered his form in thedeciding set to take thetitle by a margin of 11-7.The 14 & Under Opendivision displayedgrowing talent as lastyears 3rd place finisherMichael Banks, Jr. and4th place Justin Hall tookthe floor. Hall, 14, ofHamel, IL, marched to thefinals by upsettingNathan Wisniewski 9-0,

Kyle Crichton 9-7, Chip Compton 9-5, MichaelBanks, Jr. 9-1 and Justin Bergman 9-7 beforefacing Banks once again. Banks, 14, of BlueSprings, MO, out pointed Redante Rakin, Jr. 9-2, Adam Behnke 9-1 and Cory Scott 9-1 beforesuffering his first loss to Justin Hall 1-9. Banksfought his way through the bracket by clippingTelly Kikrilis 9-7, Daniel Rakin 9-8 and knockingout Justin Bergman 9-5 to earn the other finalistspot. Banks was impressive in the first set, outpacing Hall 9-3. However, in the second set,Hall proved that the title was rightfully his by outshooting Banks 9-6 to claim his first nationaltitle.

With the benefit of working with 16 tables, Tournament Director TedWoodward and assistant Dan Coffman easily ran another efficient event.

Players were also assistedby the fine cue repairservices of David Lauer(Emerald City Cue Repair). It seemed the only thingmissing was a clean-upcrew to pick up the manyopponents undefeatedchampion Cindy Doty ofLongview, WA left in herwake.A seasoned veteran of thegame and consistentlyamong the top ratedwomen in the Northwest,Cindy Doty moved throughthe event with the steadyand powerful pace of asteam locomotive. Clearly

determined to win the paid entry to the pro event, Cindy pulled out herfinest game of the season, which is what was required against all heropponents trying to do exactly the same. With impressive skill andbeautiful execution Cindy whippedthrough Karla Bagley-Tias [7-4], AllieShaffer [7-4], and last pro-qualifier tourstop champion Jeanne Crowell [7-2].With continued focus, Cindy boredown to claim victories over her lasttwo and most challenging matches ofthe day against 2nd place finisher fromtour stop #3, Martha Hartsell [7-6] andKim Gates [7-6].Also an accomplished player, topcontender and a favorite to watch, KimGates of Kent, WA started the eventwith one clear and simple objective annihilate her opponents to get herticket to the pro event. Saturdaycertainly started in her favor with a winby forfeit over Kat Harrison and thenstrong wins over Jo Woodward [7-4]and Mikki Small [7-1]. Her ability to maintain her focus was evident in hertoughest matches of the day against Canadian player KatherineCzarkowski [7-6], and an extremely narrow loss to Cindy by a narrow [6-7]. Left with a bad taste in her mouth, but clearly not shaken, Kim sailedpast Martha Hartsell [7-4] to obtain a rematch against Cindy in the final. As the final match got underway, it appeared a forgone conclusion thatCindy would remain undefeated, as she quickly moved to an impressive4-0 lead. Only a few games away from defeat, Kim refused to let thescore distract her from her mission. Slowly and with amazing poise andprecision, Kim started to turn the tables in her favor, pushing the score to5-5. With their nerves rightfully strained, both players took a break beforeresuming the nail-biting match.Clearly somewhat shaken andanxious, Cindy made a costlymistake on the 9-ball putting Kim onthe hill (6-5). With tremendouspressure mounting, Kim thenreturned the same favor to Cindy, tying the game at an exciting 6-6.Kim jokingly asked Cindy Wouldntyou just like to end this torture nowand start with a clear score in ournext set? Cindy joked back that shewas too worn out from this matchfor that. In the final rack, Kim brokebut was unable to pocket a ball.Cindy proceeded to calmly and methodically run the rack for thetournament win.The NWPA wishes to thank all of its members and supporters forcontributing to the tour. Ryan Middleton of Aloha, Oregon is here with his team Pool Fools andhas become the center of attention in the tournament room. I just didthis for fun, it seemed appropriate, said Middleton of his funky hair design,I guess it could be distracting, but I was hoping to find someone to sponsorme out here.Middleton has been an APA member for only six months and his teammade it to the National Team Championships only after their first session. We are out here to support each other, I am a team player and this ishow I am displaying my spirit and enthusiasm, this is a great tournament,I dont know how someone could not get excited out here, said Middleton.Middleton designed his do himself with the help of Beautiful Faces, asalon in Oregon that designs Henna Tattoos. The color in my hair andeyebrows is a gel, it washes out and I can change the colors everyday, the tattoos on the sides of my head will stay until they wash away, saidMiddleton.

In January of this year, despite a harsh winter storm, an impressive fieldof 31 players attended the newly founded Northwest Womens PoolAssociations [NWPA] first tournament. With a guaranteed minimum of$500 added, as well as local television news and radio coverage, theplayers were left with a strong sense of excitement and a desire to supportthe new tour. The NWPA is a womens regional 9-ball tour that is sanctioned by theWomens Professional Billiard Association (WPBA). The NWPAs missionis to encourage and promote all skill levels of womens pool in the PacificNorthwest. In addition to providing two WPBA qualifier events this season, the tour offers other events such as 8-ball tournaments and a poolexhibition/educational clinic aimed at supporting and elevating overallplay for less experienced members. The NWPA Board of Directors has incorporated innovative marketingand promotional strategies, such as unprecedented television and radiocoverage for their events. Increased added monies are anticipated basedon corporate sponsorships. Plus, the Board strives to run each tournamentmore efficiently than the last. The results have been a pleased andgrowing playing membership: Stop 1 31 players; Stop 2 39 players;Stop 3 52 players. Current NWPA membership is comprised of Oregon,Washington, Idaho and Canadian players, though the tour is open to allfemale players as either members or non-members.

It hostsone black 9-foot High Tech IV Gold Crown and three 9-foot Gold CrownIIs. weaker player winning against a world-beater.This fact alone makes it worth working on. Whowill do that work? As in life, [s]he who does thework gets paid. Paul Marquez did the workand won at Chinook Winds; Todd Rhulen didthe work and won in Idaho. Now, those guidelines; In 9-ball: outbreak em; if you cant out breakem then out skill em.In 1-pocket: out wait em.In 14.1: out think em.YES, all of these will work with each kind ofgame mentioned; they are also best suited foryou to rely on as they are listed above. Thenewer you are at gambling the more useful youllfind them to be. For those of you with years ofexperience, [seasoning] I suggest using themwhen you are looking at what appears to be a50-50 proposition. [My students will all tell youthat a 50-50 proposition is where you get fiftydollars for this rack and fifty dollars for the nextone.]ON THE BREAK:Ill approach this by listing, first the kind of thingsyou may be experiencing in the break and followwith potential solutions.NO, OR LITTLE POWER; the break is not as isusually imagined based on how hard you canhit the rack. It is based on rhythm. And if it isbased on rhythm, you learning your individualrhythm becomes the answer. This commonmisconception of HARD is borne of the largerand more common misconception that the cuejust needs to be moving fast. at the END ofthe break stroke, thats true. SOLUTIONS:begin by changing your view from how hard tohow fast can I have this cue stick moving?Add to that what I think is the largest and mostimportant part. Have the cue stickACCELERATE to its final speed. In thisaccelerating youll find your rhythm and animmediate source of more power. Anothersource of more power is to find a longer stroke, longer backstroke and DEFINITELY a longerstroke toward the 1 ball. You cannot make thisstroke too long. Let the cue do what it wants todo naturally. In looking at my break stroke Isee that my cue tip ends about 1 inch beyondthe horizontal line that divides the side pockets[on a 9' gold crown and starting from thestandard rail and head string starting point.] Forthose of you that are just beginning in pool youcan find this spot on nearly any used table. Lookalong the head string and find two worn spotsnear each rail.POWER AND NO ACCURACY: this is anexciting one because you can change this oneimmediately! For most its a simple matter ofbeing present IN THE MOMENT THAT THECUEBALL IS CONTACTED. Its the one strokewhere I suggest you are looking at the cue ballduring contact. See and feel what is going on. Ithink youll be surprised to find that you seewithin minutes the individual adjustments youcan make to gain more accuracy. Accuracyrelies on stance. Adjust your stance to suit thewide opened full swing we are using when we

break. Experiment with your gripping handbeing farther back than when you normallystroke. Some of this is to compensate for thefact that we stand higher when we break. [Ourchin is not as close to the cue stick.] If you havevery little power this usually goes hand and handwith the cue ball ending up near or beyondwhere the balls were racked. Go lower on thecue ball and youll gain more power and controlof the cue ball. Dont make wholesaleadjustments, the adjustment that works may beslight or nearly imperceptible to you right now.Spend the time looking accurately andremember to adjust your stance howeverslightly.POWER / CUE BALL ON THE FLOOR: this isanother thing that is improved by being presentat and during cue ball contact. The balance canbe in striking the cue ball higher or being moreaccurate as to where we are hitting the 1 ball.In deciding to go higher on the cue ball [if youare getting power it is unlikely that you have tohit the cue ball lower] understand that it mayrequire new looking on your part. Lets say thatthe cue ball jumps the table to the side that youbreak from. Hit more to the opposite side of the1 ball. Hit more of the 1 ball AWAY from theside that the cue ball jumps the table. Look tohave more wrist action on your break stroke;this will have to be done with extreme care andaccuracy or you may never gain control of thecue ball. A little more wrist will add speed toyour stick movement and be an even greaterhelp in finding a smoooth flowing powerfulrhythm. Most of the problems that I see with powerlessbreaking are that players arent putting in thework. Here are some hints; rack the balls innumbered order whenever you are working onthe break. This will allow you to become morefamiliar with how the balls are reacting. [The 5ball will be where the nine usually sits.] For youplayers, hire someone to rack for you orexchange lessons for their help with racking. You will be breaking instead of walking, retrieving balls and racking; the benefit isexponential. There is a new learning tool on the marketdesigned to assist in improving on your breakin the most effective and efficient way possible. It is called BREAKRAK. We will be using oneat MCGILLS BILLIARD ACADEMY and Isuggest you get one or have the room ownerwhere you play get one. This is a most effectiveway to work on your break stroke.Coming next month:GAMBLING, WILL YOU MANAGE?This was to be the fist article and I found myselfwithout enough time to do it justice. It is the mostimportant aspect of playing pool for money andTHE MOST OVERLOOKED! The mostimportant and the most overlooked! I think youllbe pleased with the prospect of improving yourgambling results with just a few minutes ofreading. See you next month.Thank you and...Do the work Lance E McGill(See ad page 2)

the years had taken their toll gleamedwith his white hair.

I feel just fine, I said adamantly. He laughed and added, The fire is in

your eyes, Carter Keating. You have a passionfor the game that will not rest. He paused, thenadded, had it in my own eyes fifty years ago.

Silence. I shot at the eight and missedan easy shot in the hole.

Its all in your head, Son, Charleyproffered. His shoulders, though thin and bony, still stood erect as he eyed the table.

I chalked my cue, narrowed my eyes andlooked directly at him.

Its all in your head, he repeated. Allthe practice in the world wont help if you dontget the game down in your head.

Hows that? I askedHe smirked and pointed with his chin to

the chair next to where he was sitting and said, grab a seat, son.

I just stared at him.You really want to learn about the game,

or not? he challenged.Got the Jimmy the Stick Gadwell

showing me how to play, I replied arrogantly. He laughed, then said calmly, one day

youll wish youd learned how to beat Jimmy, the Stick, Gadwell, and youll wish we wouldhave talked.

My head snapped around and turneddirectly toward him. Id like that very much, Isaid.

Pyramiding his hands together, hewaited patiently as I took my chair and scootedup beside him, my ears eager to hear his nextwords.AS THE MONTHS PASSED BY, I EAGERLYlooked forward to my visits with Charley Sturgis. He befriended me and took me under his wing. When Mom had died, Pop went ballistic, sentmy two sisters off to a private school then took

off drinking to medicate the pain. As for me, hesimply told me to stay out of trouble. Threeweeks later, I met Dave Wakefield on the banksof the Trinity River. A week after that, Jimmy, the Stick, Gadwell started teaching me thegame. Charley Sturgis taught me how to think.

My mind flashed back to the present. AsCharley and I watched the industrious energeticbirds build their nest, a big semi trailer truckrolled by and blew parts of their straw haciendaonto the walk. The relentless birds soaredquickly down and retrieved the materials.Charley watched as they struggled to rebuild.

What is it you really want out of life?he queried.

I blew some air out my nose and said,Its not a question Id really ever considered,Charley. Im not sure I understand what youreasking me.

Ask yourself what you really want andgo for it passionately, he said, and get seriousabout school. School will help you become abetter pool player and it will also help get youthrough life. He smiled and dipped his head acouple of times then took a large breath of airas though hed just taken on an extra measureof patience.

He eyed me sternly and said, Setdefinite goals for yourself today, Carter, and getpassionate about them. Come back to themeveryday and they will guide you. The moreintense they become, the more theyll pull youaway from trouble and into your dreams.

Charley, I asked, as I leaned my elbowson the counter and held my coffee cup with bothhands, surprise me and tell me what coursesyou taught as a college professor.

He snorted warmly and said,Psychology, Carter.

Smiling broadly, I said, Of course,Charley Sturgis, why should I be surprised atthat?

There is a tendency for many players to choke while shooting the 9-ball.This is because it is the money ball and has more emotion associatedwith it than any of the other balls. Another unique thing about shooting atthe 9-ball is that you dont have to get shape on a succeeding ball. Inorder to make the 9-ball more like any other ball you should pick out a

Shooting the 9-Ballspot on the table where you want the cue ball to end up. Keeping yourmind occupied with the cue balls leave will relieve some of the enxiety ofshooting the 9-ball.The following is kind of a quiz. It is best to look at an illustration, formulateyour opinions, then read the commentary.

How would you go about getting shape on the 9-ball?Problem: The farther forward the cue ball is rolled, the smaller the cutangle on the 9-ball; but, the farther it rolls the more danger there is ofscratching.Commentary: Some professionals would use maximum bottom Englishcausing the cue ball to back up to the near side cushion and rebound outtoward diamond P. This results in excellent shape but there is a chanceof miscuing or not drawing the ball far enough. The best technique, formost players, is to cheat the pocket to the right; this will cause the cueball to hit the cushion on the left side of the pocket if it rolled too far.

Where would your position spot be for a shot at the 9-ball?Problem: In shooting the 8-ball the cue ball may scratch in pocket E.Commentary: The 8-ball can be shot extremely slowly so that the cueball will stop before it gets to pocket E. This technique does not workconsistently because there is a subconscious tendency to miss the objectball by hitting it too full when you want minimum cue-ball roll.In shooting the 8-ball a little right English can be used to make the cueball rebound off the side cushion toward diamond D. This will make theshot as short as possible but there is still a chance of scratching or leavingthe cue ball in a position where you would have to stretch for it. Thisdoes not sound like a good option.Left English can be used to make the cue ball rebound toward diamondF which would make the shot a little longer than ideal but safer than theprevious options. Another advantage of this shot is that it is not speedsensitive. The cue ball may bounce back and forth between F and Rand still leave a reasonable shot at the 9-ball.

Which pocket would you choose for the 9-ball?Problem: A decision must be must be made as to where to shoot the 9-ball.Commentary: The 8-ball can be shot very slowly and the cue ball leftnear diamond H. From there the 9-ball can be shot into pocket A. Or,the 8-ball can be shot with top left English and the cue ball made to go toH then to R and rebound toward C or D. From there the 9-ball canbe shot into pocket J. A little easier shot on the 9-ball can be gottenfrom this second option if no english is put on the cue ball; but there is adanger of scratching in side pocket E. If the corner pockets are generousthe first option is probably best.

Would you rather use the side or end cushionto get shape on the 9-ball?

Problem: Which is better when shooting the 7-ball, going a little forwardso the side rail can be used in getting shape for the 9-ball or backing upa little and using the end rail for shape on the 9-ball?Commentary: Imagine a line through the aiming ghost ball perpendicularto the path of the 8-ball. Then decide which direction, along the imaginaryline; you would rather have the cue ball travel for shape on the 9-ball.Average players generally try to keep the cut angle on the 8-ball small. Asmall cut angle, when going to the end rail, would require a very firm shotto make the cue ball go three rails. Therefore, they usually come up shortand dont get shape on the 9-ball. If the cue ball is made to go to the sidecushion, after pocketing the 8-ball, a small cut angle on the 8-ball will notbe as disastrous. If the cut angle is very small the 8-ball can be shot withbottom English to make the cue ball go toward diamond R or farther up-table. Taking this path the cue ball remains in a reasonable position, for ashot at the 9-ball, throughout its travel.
