The official philanthropy of the John Carroll Colony of ΒθΠ is the Center for Autism at the Cleve-

land Clinic‟s Children‟s Hospital. This facility is nationally known as a leader in researching and

treating Autism. This year, to raise money for its philanthropy, ΒθΠ hosted its second annual, university

wide talent show: Carroll‟s Got Talent. On Friday, October 2nd, twelve different acts showed off their

musical, dance or comedic skills to both the students and community members in attendance. Through ticket sales and donations, this function brought in

nearly $1,100.00. This year however, instead of simply giving the money to the Clinic, Philanthropy

Chair Jamie Ott, hopes to involve the fraternity membership in some type of service project that can utilize the raised funds.

One option currently being discussed with Travis Haycook, one of the directors at the Cen-ter for Autism, is to use the money to purchase gifts for the children, which would then be hand

One of the missions of Beta Theta Pi is “Commitment to Community.” Betas are charged

to not only serve their fraternity, but their university and local communities as well. In light of this, each semester the members of the Colony perform at least twenty hours of service to their

communities. Throughout early Fall semester the John Carroll Betas helped the Church of the Gesu

handle the logistics of their service project, Interfaith Hospitality Network, and on two different

occasions did landscaping work at the nearby Orange Senior Center. For this latter work the The Chagrin Valley Times highlighted the fraternity in a photo article dated October 8th.

More recently members have participated in a campus wide Greek service day – an event called Competition for a Cause. A team of Betas won this event, which was made up of numerous

mini athletic competitions including tug of war, an obstacle course and a Frisbee game called KanJam.

A Beta team also won top cheering squad award for their efforts in cheering on the Gamma Phi Beta‟s at the sorority‟s annual fundraiser – Powder-Puff Football.

The recently initiated Delta Class will get right into living the Beta Spirit as they begin to plan the service project which will also function as a Spring 2010 Informal Recruitment Event this

month.

The Newsletter of the John Carroll University Colony of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity

2010 executive board with four of our fantastic

advisors at the Keystone Regional Conference.

It is hard to believe that the Fall

semester is already over, and for our ten seniors, only one semester remains. Even though the Fall

semester flew by, many great things happened within that time period for the gentlemen of Beta

Theta Pi. On November 21, we traveled to Oxford,

Ohio to induct thirteen new members as part of our Delta class. As our largest class to date, we are

excited to have these new members join our fold. We have continued our commitment to the

surrounding John Carroll community with service events and in our annual philanthropic event,

Carroll‟s Got Talent. This year approximately $1,000 was raised for The Center for Autism at

Cleveland Clinic Children‟s Hospital. Once again, during parents‟ weekend, we gave our families and

friends a chance to meet each other while dining on some homemade specialties. At the end of the

semester, our new executive board was elected

and took office on December 6, 2009. This upcoming Spring semester will be

full of events, deadlines, and work for Beta. As we look forward to chartering this summer in

Washington, D.C., our new executive board has made the deadline for completing our application

by March 28. We are also looking forward to hosting our annual Mother‟s Tea on the 21st of

March. Mothers--this is an event you won‟t want to miss!

We continue to fulfill the obligation that

we have to serve John Carroll and the surrounding communities. On February 9, we will be

volunteering at the largest blood drive in Ohio. Additionally, we are starting to make plans for a

Beta immersion trip in 2011.

Hopefully, we will cap off the end of

the Spring semester by continuing our winning tradition at Greek Week, the Variety Show, and

Lip Sync. Many long, yet fun hours will be devoted to showcasing the many talents of our

members.

Our semesters at John Carroll University seem to be passing very quickly. We

all seem to have different and difficult school schedules, class work, jobs and other

obligations. Many times there are just not enough hours in the day to get it all

accomplished. However, our men always take time to put others before themselves and get

done what needs to get done. These acts speak louder than words can describe. I am proud to

be able to associate myself with such selfless men. I hope that you all appreciate the time you

are given each and every day. Take advantage of

the opportunities you are given, as you never know if that opportunity will come again.

I cannot express how excited and honored I am to be serving as the president of

Beta Theta Pi for this upcoming term. It is my goal to strengthen our bonds of brotherhood,

see the fulfillment of our charter in Washington, continue our commitment to others, and make

sure we never lose sight of what we were founded upon at John Carroll.

Have a blessed 2010,

~Andrew C. Lane „12
