February 3rd saw St Anne’sChurch inundated by floodwater as two Bewdleyschools and other local or-ganisations combined to puton two wonderfulperformances of Noye’sFludde, a medieval mysteryplay about Noah.

The play was set to music byBenjamin Britten speciallyfor performance by a mix ofprofessional and amateur

musicians. For February’s performance Alan Fairs and ClaireWarboys played Mr and Mrs Noah with an orchestra that in-cluded handbells, timpani, piano, organ string quintet and evencoffee mugs!

Altogether a delightful experienceexpertly performed and conducted.

Bewdley Concert BandOpens a Music Academy

Bewdley Concert Band is now an established part of the local community andas the Band goes into its second year plans continue to evolve. In the

forthcoming months, work continues on their varied and entertaining programme of music.Already the band has been booked for Bewdley Carnival, the Diamond Jubilee Celebrationsand several appearances at Bewdley Museum. They are expecting to be in demand for manyother events as the year progresses.

The Band has also opened a SaturdayMorning Music Academy. They recentlywon arts grants from the Elmley Founda-tion andWorcestershire County Counciland now the Academy has new instrumentsand music to offer tuition and mentoring tochildren and adults. Editorial News

Having badly misjudged the weather in my editorial last month – Irhapsodized on the warmth of the run of Spring-like days only to find thatwhen the magazine came out, I was doing my delivery round in a bitternorth wind on icy paths – I am resolving not to mention the weatheragain on this page. So what to write about for the month of March?

A kind (?) friend told me that my editorials were too unremittinglyupbeat. So I resolved not to write about anything cheery this month. Ialso heard that no-one under the age of sixty ever reads the editorial page.So I can’t talk about anything to do with Alyssa Reid, Rizzie Kicks or i-phones. To produce afree magazine, we rely on our advertising revenue. Out goes anything to do with services ortrade in Bewdley. Bird-watching? No, I’m only really secure on ostriches or parrots.Household matters? You can’t be serious – have you seen my house? Cookery? Mm, whathasn’t already been said about baked beans? Fashion? Too many male readers. Motoring?Too many female readers.

Now I could tell you a lot of frightfully interesting things about Mozart’s use of fugato and theplace of the leitmotif inWagner’s Parsifal, but go on, be honest: you just don’t care, do you?

Someone – well, another Bridge volunteer actually - suggested recycling was the way forward.“No-one will remember what you wrote a couple of years ago”, he said. Cruel, so cruel.

No, there’s only one thing to be done. I’ll write about having nothing to write about.

Bewdley Museum 40 years on…“We intend to show people, who have only known Bewdley as a sleepy backwater, what abusy and important centre it was. It will become the focal point of the town and we hope itwill attract visitors and stimulate trade. The opening is just a beginning. There is scope forfurther improvements and extensions to the museum. As a living centre we want it to beused for cultural activities by local people and those who wish to carry out research into thetown’s history.”

This visionary statement was made by Stephen Quayle, Bewdley Museum’s founder as reported in the Kidderminster Shuttle, 30th June 1972, when the Museum first opened to thepublic.

The Friends of Bewdley museum are delighted topresent the opening exhibition of 2012, celebrating 40years of the museum. The exhibition runs from 31stMarch to 20th May.

The role of the Friends has developed as the museumhas changed. Volunteers play an important part inmaking clay pipes, manning the air raid shelter andsupporting museum staff at special events.

Learn smallholding skillsHave you ever dreamt of earning your living by or justowning some livestock? Did you know that you cancreate your own smallholding in a medium sized garden?

A series of 6 smallholding courses including practicalities of keeping cattle, poultry, sheep and pigswill cover all aspects for those interested in taking on asmallholding, or just wanting to know the basics of

animal husbandry. Mark Cleaver, course tutor, said “This is a great opportunity to find outabout a range of small holding opportunities from keeping bees, pigs to rabbits. A smallholding can be started from a medium sized garden, there is no magic involved; justcommon sense and enthusiasm”.

Other courses taking place during March include hedge laying and charcoal burning.

Applicants from eligible areas of Worcestershire will pay only £25 per course (plus materialcosts in some cases), as the programme is co-financed by RDPE LEADER funding.

Tails of a Veterinary Practice– life at Riverside Vets as seen by Gavin the practice cat.

Some of you will have heard, I’m sure, about my new friend Izzy thecat. Izzy came in to the practice via the RSPCA after she had beenhit by a car. My humans went to get her as the RSPCA didn’t havean officer available and she was brought to the practice for treatment. She had some bruising and had hit her head and to startwith she couldn’t walk. The vets treated her injuries and made sureshe wasn’t in any pain and after lots of TLC from the nurses shestarted to improve by leaps and bounds.

As she was a stray, my humans put up posters and phoned round allthe local vets to see if she had some humans of her own, but sadly it

seemed she was alone in the world.

After about a week, Izzy had recovered enough to start looking for a new home. Luckily forher, my friend Helen was looking for a new cat. Once Helen had come to the surgery tomeet Izzy, there was no question that she had found a loving new home. Izzy is so charmingthat she was impossible to resist!

I am pleased to report that Izzy has settled in well and is training her new humans in a waythat I am proud of. We chat regularly on facebook and she always lets me know how she isgetting on.

It's very tempting tolaunch into a Tubbs-style rant about this being "a local library for local people, there's nothing for you here!" Wedon't all have the same sense of humour, however, so I don't.

Our local section covers many areas of local history and interest. There are books on local industry and transport systems, buildings of historical interest, local walks and wellknown figures connected to Bewdley and the surroundingarea, including Stanley Baldwin and John Constable. There isalso a section of fiction and non-fiction books written bylocal authors, and a couple of them are regular visitors to the library!

Cleaning St. Anne's ChurchYou may have wondered why the outside of St. Anne's Churchlooks so dirty.

This brief note explains why.

Three hundred and fifteen years ago, the tower was built witha wooden structure on its West side, which had shops and aninn with chapel meeting rooms above; the tower was built of

sandstone. Two hundred and sixty four years ago the shops and meeting rooms on the Westside were taken down and the new church was built on the East side. The builders, whowere a company from Chipping Camden, used a totally different stone to clad these parts ofthe church. They used oolitic limestone from a quarry in the Chilterns area. The sandstoneof the tower is eroding, but it does not hold the dirt and is quite clean; the limestone of thebody of the church is sound, but it holds the dirt.

The air in Bewdley is now clean, but in the past there was air-born dirt from the townhouses' smoky coal fires, from the gas works, the chemical and roof-slates works along theriver and from the charcoal burners in the forest. This smoke mixed with the acid rain wasdeposited on the town and on the church.

For over 40 years the church Property Group has been trying to find a safe, non-destructiveway of cleaning the relatively soft, oolitic limestone, which clads the nave and chancel areas.They have been in contact with the experts at English Heritage and the Worcester DiocesanChurch Fabric group in order to find a way to clean the building. However, a safe method ofcleaning cannot at present be found, which is acceptable to all of the many parties who areconcerned with any work carried out on this listed building.

Mainly About CyclingConsider the environmental impact of various forms of transport: 1. Walk, 2. Run, 3. Cycle, 4.Bus/Train, 5. Car and 6. Fly.

1, 2 and 3 share the three Es - Economy, Exercise and Ecology and are beneficial to the individual as well as the planet.

Walking is slowest but gives time for contemplation. Running requiresmost effort but should get you fit. Cycling is the most efficient, balancing speed of travel versus energy expenditure and allowing you tocarry a lot of stuff by way of panniers, saddlebags or even trailers.

A car might seem to save time, but consider how many extra hours youneed to work (at least 5 a week?) in order to pay for and maintain a car.

Walking, running and cycling gets you fit, and there is also the satisfaction that you are notdoing any harm to the planet and you are being an individual instead of sitting in a traffic jamwith everybody else!

Cycling isn’t carbon neutral, as bikes have to be manufactured and parts have to be replacedand they have to be lubricated. However, if you purchase a good quality bike and look after itwell, it should last longer than a car. My own bike is nearly 30 years old and still running fineand I got round the lubricant problem by using Green Oil, a plant based product made inKent.

There are many problems associated with the car, and even though a lot of people walk, runor cycle as a leisure activity, things won’t improve unless bikes are used to replace manymore car journeys.

I found myself chuckling when reading Diane Chater's account of her husband’s attitude toValentine’s day in their younger days since it reminded me of an incident in my past.

At the time, my husband, now deceased, was a member of Rowley Regis 41 Club, and it hadbeen decided at one of their meetings that wives and girlfriends would be taken to a Valentine Ball. We all arrived, dressed in our finery, and all ladies were presented by theirhusbands with a beautiful fresh red rose suitably wrapped in cellophane. I, however, waspresented with a very sad looking plastic version, for which I offered a humiliated 'ThankYou', while my husband was admonished by his colleagues. Serve him right I say!

Update on New Medical CentreBewdley Medical Practice’s plans for a new medical centre have recentlyhad to alter due to planning restrictions within the town centre.

As everyone is aware, the current premises are out-dated and are nolonger fit for purpose. The practice team has expanded and we are increasingly struggling for space, which has an impact on the services wecan offer. In the future, the services that we provide may be restricted ifwe cannot obtain a new building. We would like to continue to expand andbuild on our already wide range of services and so it is vital that we

progress with a new building.

A great deal of hard work has been put into the development of a new building on the existing surgery/library site over the last few years by many organisations. Unfortunately, therecent planning restrictions recommended by English Heritage (regarding the scale/height ofbuilding allowed) have meant that we cannot build a new medical centre in this location. Atwo storey development would not give sufficient space to accommodate the new surgeryand, furthermore, it would be financially unviable.

In order not to miss our opportunity to improve our practice, we need to continue to lookfor a way forward for a new building. As a town centre option is not viable or available, it hasbeen necessary to look at alternative sites. The site we are currently looking at is on Kidderminster Road, Wribbenhall. There are a number of key benefits in moving to Kidderminster Road:-

• Fewer design restrictions and a more flexible/adaptable layout.

• Opportunity for ample free parking on site.

• Access to public transport.

• Removes need for costly temporary accommodation.

• Releases the existing surgery site for a smaller scale development.

The Practice will be involving the patient participation group and would like our patients togive us their thoughts and views on what they would like to see in our new surgery. Therewill be a public consultation for us all to discuss the plans in more detail once they are developed further.

St Anne's tower contains a ring of eight bells, varying in weightfrom 5 cwt to 15 cwt (0.25 to 0.75 tonnes for the modernreader), in the key of F. They are rung "full circle", that is, a bellstarts from the upside down position ("mouth up") and swingsthrough a full circle until it is again mouth up; it then swings ina complete circle in the opposite direction.

As each ringer is controlling a lot of swinging metal, the options are limited. Once a bell has commenced its swing, we

have no control over it until it is again mouth up. For this reason, we cannot use the bells toplay tunes. Towers which do this (eg Worcester cathedral) employ a completely separatemechanism to make the sound.

What happens to the bell rope is different as the bells swing in each direction. In one direction the fluffy wooly bit (the sallie) disappears through the ceiling; in the other directionit comes down again and the ringer needs to catch it. We aim to ring the bells evenly spaced,with a slight gap after two blows.

The bells consist of a major octave. We always begin by ringing rounds, in which the bells arerung repeatedly in a descending scale, with a slight pause after every other change. For a ringof bells in the key of C (for simplicity) they would sound

Ringers do not refer to the bells by their note, but by numbers, from the lightest (treble) tothe heaviest (tenor). So we are thinking

The aim is to have the bells absolutely evenly spaced. This is achieved (approximately!) bywatching the rope of the bell you are following, and then making fine adjustments by ear. Thisis something that learners in particular find very difficult. So on a Sunday morning you mayhear the odd bit of uneven ringing, clipping, or even a direct hit on another bell (known in thetrade as crunching"!)

TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 6TH FEBRUARY 2012

LitterTown Councillors were saddened to see the letter in January’s edition of the Bridge fromNora Chatsworth as to problems of litter in Bewdley and particularly the riverbank footpathbetween the High School and Styles Mill. Not all litter is dropped by young people but theview was that more might be done in schools to discourage the practice and so a requestwill be sent to Bewdley’s three schools for them each to mount an anti-litter campaign.

Mercure Kidderminster HotelThe Council had received a disappointing reply from Mercure Hotel’s HQ to last month’srequest to call it the Mercure Bewdley Hotel and not the Mercure Kidderminster Hotel.Councillors agreed that a Petition should be drawn up supported by the Mayor with a viewto getting local residents to sign as means of bringing pressure to bear to get the namechanged.

Jubilee CelebrationsCouncillors had a report form the Jubilee Working Group as to celebrations that werehoped could go ahead on Jubilee week-end at the beginning of June including events on theMonday in the Queen Elizabeth Gardens. The Mayor had also obtained 60 woodland treesaplings free of charge from Grow With Wyre which it was intended would be planted inOctober to commemorate the Queen’s 60 years as monarch.

Welch Gate Traffic Management ImprovementsCouncillors had taken part in the consultation exercise carried out by County Councilofficials as to what might be the best means of solving this difficult and long-standing problem.The County Council proposed a trial scheme involving traffic lights to provide for alternatingone-way traffic. This would be for a period of one month commencing shortly. There wassome scepticism as to how this might work and how it may impact on adjoining roads. Theoutcome of the trial will be eagerly awaited.

Volunteering in Novinki Orphanage Belarus:Part Two

Working in Novinki orphanage, Belarus, with other SKIP (“Students for Kids in InternationalProjects”) volunteers provided me with an exciting opportunity to witness health and socialcare in a different country and forced me out of my comfort zone. Peering into the largeroom for the “bedbound” kids, I could see many pale faces with sombre expressions atopthin, twisted bodies with various levels of deformity. This led to me to expect that when wemet the children for the first time they would be meek, timid and withdraw from our socialcontact. However, I couldn’t have been more wrong! Barely had we had time to stow ourthings before the first cheeky, inquisitive head popped round the door to find out who wewere.

The first child who was placed in my care, Jayna (aged 6-8), turned out to be deaf and blind asshe suffered from congenital rubella. I found myself at a bit of a loss as to how to entertainsuch a child! We sat quietly for a bit while she got used to me, feeling my face to get an ideaof who I was. She didn’t seem to have any interest in toys and for lack of anything better todo I started singing to her, which I think she responded to (she didn’t seem to object to anyway!) I was then asked to help her with her walking, as being unable to see she finds thisdifficult.

Over the following two weeks I became very, very attached to Jayna as I was appointed theSKIP volunteer in charge of her development. Over that time her walking improved and wemanaged to find her toys and activities that she could undertake independently.

Whilst the kids at the orphanage seemed to love the extra attention from having us there,the carers were less enamoured. During our visit, there was a government inspection thatlasted 7 days. This meant that we were under close scrutiny and were repeatedly warned notto get the children too excited or let them play with too many toys, as that made the placelook “messy”. It became clear in Belarus that sadly appearances are often deemed more important than the happiness or quality of life of these children (!).

Lucy Robinson, an ex-pupil at Bewdley School, is now at medical school.

Mick was a stalwart supporter of Bewdley Town anddid a lot of work behind the scenes to keep the club running. He will be missed by every-body connected with the club. Our thoughts are with his family at this very sad time.

Match ReportBewdley started January off on the 7th with an away game against Cradley Town. Bewdleystarted the first 10 minutes of the game looking like the rain had left them rusty. But soon,Ollie Smith scored for Bewdley. The second half goal for Bewdley was from Craig Webb’spenalty, making the final score Bewdley FC 2 - 0 Cradley Town.

The other games in January were cancelled due to poor weather conditions.

Signs of springshould abound inthe forest thismonth. You shouldbe able to hear gold-crests and siskinssinging, while otherssuch as blackbirds,mistle thrushes andsong thrushes startto build their nests.The eggs of tawny

owls, dippers and ravens will already behatching. On warm days some of the cold-blooded inhabitants of the woods – woodants, adders, grass snakes and slow worms –should emerge from hibernation and frogswill spawn.

The silky “pussy willow” buds will silver the sallow trees and new leaves will be ap-pearing: usually first on the hawthorn, followed by hazel, rowan, elder and brightgreen larch needles.

The early flowers should be out: primroses,wood anemones, celandines, violets andwood sorrel. Thinning and felling of conifersnear the new Community Discovery Centrehas created the right conditions for a varietyof other woodland plants, such as bluebells,heathers, ramsons, enchanters nightshade,woodsage, bugle and wood spurge to spread. We will be en-couraging this enrichment of the habitat byplanting more native flowers and shrubswhere appropriate. We hope to see morebilberry bushes as well, not only because thefruit are good in pies! (No, they are also ex-cellent in jams and jellies, cooked in batteror raw with cream!) In the Hebrides, theleaves are traditionally dried to make a tea,while the berries were collected from the Long Mynd to be sold as a dye (no surprise for anyone who hascollected them and suffered the stains re-

sulting from the odd squashed berry). Thedeer love to browse bilberries but thebushes are sometimes protected by tanglesof brambles so that humans have a chancetoo! Grazing by deer reduces diversity inour forest, so the best flowers are generallytucked away in inaccessible places by rillsand streams.

As usual this month, the Forestry Commis-sion will be hosting events in the forestwhich are open to the public.

Forest Friends are a group of pre-schoolchildren and their carers meeting everyterm-time Thursday from 10am to 11am forforest-based play and activities. Then thereare Health Walks every Tuesday and Sundaystarting from the Forest Cafe at 11am tobuild fitness at a gentle pace.

During the school holidays there will beweekly Treetastic Tuesdays and Forest Fri-days where the Discovery Centre will be

open for people to see the interpretativeartworks and exhibits. There will also betrails and activities for children on thesedays. There will be an Easter Egg Hunt onGood Friday from 10.30am to 2.00pm, start-ing at the Community Discovery Centre.There is no need to book but please bring£3.50 per child.
