Commanders’ Report
Cdr. William A. Towner, AP
Cell (585) 260-7981
Thank you to everyone that attended our 78th
Annual Change of Watch in December.
We had around 40 members and guests in
attendance while the Lodge on the Green
Party House provided an excellent buffet and
service for us all.
A member our own Rochester Coast Guard
Station was in attendance and gave us a
speech on the latest happenings at the Station
along with some inside stories of life as a
Coastguardsman on Lake Ontario during the
holidays. District 6 Commander Bill Herrick
was in attendance and did the honors of
swearing in our new bridge this year along
with speaking to us about the latest
happenings at the District and National levels
plus cooperative programs he is encouraging
across the District to bring in new
members. D/C Herrick was very informative
about who our prospective members are for
marketing the classes and other benefits of
being a member of the USPS and ideas on
how to reach out to those same boaters.
Awards Given
F Ritter Shumway Award for Distinguished Service to the Squadron Lt/Cdr. Debbie Heffron
accepted by P/C Steve Heffron.
Past Commander’s Cup for Exemplifying the Best of USPS Values P/C Rick Hibbs
What an exciting time to be
Commander! Here it is January already and
there are so many things coming up for the
Squadron!
Right off is our January Membership meeting
with our guest speaker Anthony Danielle of
the Danielle Family Businesses and he will be
giving a presentation on their new Braddock
Bay Westpoint Marina, along with the latest
developments at Southpoint Marina in
Irondequoit Bay. If you have ever thought
about visiting or docking in Braddock Bay
this is the time to find out the possibilities!!
Coming up in February we have our
Membership meeting on the first Wednesday
at GYC as usual and I’m sure we will hear
more about from Admin. Lt/Cdr. Bob
Crossman as the date gets closer.
3
Soon after that we have the 2017 Greater
Rochester Boat Show at the Convention
Center. We will have our booth there and
Rick Hibbs and John Zingo are working on
some additional ideas to attract more
visitors. Sign up now to get the best time
slots!
However later in the month of February we
have something new!
Lt. Bridgett Arieno will be hosting a “Partner
in Command” seminar on Saturday, February
11th. This is the class you want to attend
with your 1st Mate! Bridgett, along with
associates from West Marine will be teaching
us about all the latest safety gear and
procedures for when or if you suddenly find
yourself in command of the boat. This will
help give you the confidence to face the
unforeseen situations that can happen
suddenly out on the water and summon the
help you may need and to bring your loved
ones home safely!
This should be a very exciting
program! Plus, to make it even more
interesting it is going to be held at the Port of
Rochester Terminal Building in Charlotte.
The class is open to the public and we
encourage everyone to bring their boating
friends and family for a great seminar!
Thank you to everyone working so hard
already to make 2017 a success for the
Rochester Sail & Power Squadron!

Administrative Officer
Lt/C Bob Crossman, P
(585) 202-0453
Greetings from your new AO! I hope everyone had a
safe and happy holiday season!
Our Change of Watch in December brought about
some big changes to the Bridge, with Rick Hibbs
stepping down from the Commander’s position
(again…), and Bill Towner taking the helm. Another
Power Squadron veteran, Marti Tertinek, accepted
the XO position, and the fresh fish (yours truly)
moved into the AO position.
For those who have never attended a Change of
Watch, I highly recommend it. Aside from sharing
good food and great conversation with fellow
boaters, it’s a good way to get a feel for the
organization. It’s a nice blend of historical traditions
and new ideas. It’s an opportunity for the ‘newbies’
to meet the lifetime members. You get an overall
sense of what the squadron was, is, and the direction
it’s heading.
Continuing with that theme, the Bridge is in the
process of planning for events in 2017. Starting with
the general meeting on January 4th, Anthony Danielle
will be joining us to discuss the development and
facilities at the Westpoint Marina in Braddock’s Bay.
February brings in the Greater Rochester Boat show.
Many new and exciting ideas are being tossed around
for our booth. As plans solidify, we will pass on
details…
Also in February, we have the Partner in Command
seminar. This seminar is designed for those
significant others who are uncomfortable in boats,
but still come along to humor our obsession. Safety
equipment and procedures will be discussed in a
friendly, non-intimidating environment. Once again,
details are forthcoming.
February is a busy month for the squadron! We also
have our Founder’s Day observance, AKA the Mid-
Winter Wine and Food Event. We celebrate the 1938
founding of the Rochester Sail and Power squadron
with some history, great food, and great wine.
Planning is progressing, and (you’ve guessed it)
details will come.
Lots of information is coming your way. Keep an
eye out for emails and flyers for event dates and
times!
Winter is here. Instead of wistfully glancing out the
window at our snow covered boats sitting on their
trailers or covertly driving by the boatyard as we “run
errands”, why not join our fellow squadron members
at any (or all!) of our winter events? Share a drink
and a story or two and maybe pick up a tidbit of local
information that you’ve never heard before!
We’ll see you there!

Executiver Officer’s Report
P/C Marti Tertinek, S
Hello! Let me introduce myself. My name is
Marti Tertinek; I am your new Executive
Officer i.e. XO. This isn’t my first “rodeo” as I
have been a member of USPS since women
were allowed to join. I guess we are looking
at about 36 years with 35 merit marks to my
credit and the status of Life Member. I had
the privilege of holding a position on the
National Cruise Planning Committee way
back when Cruise Planning was in its’ youth.
I have held every office on the bridge,
being a past member of the “dissolved” Red
Jacket Power Squadron. Chris and I have
chosen to join RSPS because #1 we know so
many of you and also, Red Jacket’s birth
evolved from the Rochester Power
Squadron, those so many years ago. And so
now it has evolved and we are back
“home” once again.
I have been around the water, in the water
and under the water since I was knee high
to a “belaying” pin. I’ve had the privilege of
boating on Sodus Bay and Lake Ontario for
“many” years, and didn’t know what fun I
was missing until Chris and I meant up with
the “motley” crew of membership of Red
Jacket Power Squadron. And, the rest is
history. We joined because we wanted to
educate ourselves about crossing the “lake”
safely. And ever since then, I can count on
my fingers and toes many times over,
crossing Lake Ontario with “Scotch n’ Soda,
too!” and so many of our USPS friends. And
safely, too! Attending almost every Summer
Rendezvous, what fun!!!!!
Despite what “National” does for marketing
USPS, the one thing that they continue to
forget is that of the “people” are what
make it. It is the main reason why we have
hung in USPS is first and foremost the
“members”, the “people”. Over the many
years Chris and I have formed so many
wonderful relationships with YOU, the
members, the “people”. So, I guess right
now today, my goal is to serve as your XO ,
along with the other “bridge” members, to
keep RSPS alive and well. To help RSPS
maintain its’ membership and encourage
others to join, if for nothing else than
education, to enrich their lives with the
tremendous friendship and comradery that
is offered through RSPS.
Please feel free to contact me with any
questions or concerns. If I don’t know the
answers to your questions or not able to
immediately solve your concerns, give me a
chance; I’ll find out. Many of you I know,
but many of you I don’t know. Please
introduce yourself to me, so I can have the
privilege of adding you to my USPS list of
friends.
Looking forward to seeing you at all the
RSPS events. AND, don’t forget that there is
a “boat show” coming up. Entertain the
idea of signing up and helping out at the
“RSPS Booth”.
As ever,
Marti Tertinek, S

From the Secretary:
Communications Would you say that it is nearly impossible to go through the day without talking, texting, or sending an email to someone personally or
professionally? Communications, is the sending and receiving of information between two or more people. The person sending the
message is referred to as the sender, while the person receiving the information is called the receiver. But let’s be real, if you don’t
speak the same language, don’t have the right equipment or email addresses the wrong person may be receiving your information
or it may fall into a black hole.
Surely, you know why I have chosen this as my topic; we have a list of emails, which we need to ensure its accuracy on a monthly
or bi-monthly basis. Why; because it is our mainstream to communicate with you our members or our Guest, we want you to be
aware of classes, meetings, as well as be the happy recipient of our award winning newsletter; The Chart.
Beginning this month you will receive instructions in The Chart bi-monthly, asking you to go to the USPS website and update your
email information. The Rochester Sail and Power Squadron are on a mission to have accurate information, so we can alert you of
events and classes in a timely way. But we won’t succeed without your help!!!

PARTNERS IN COMMAND SEMINAR
- BRIDGETT ARIENO, JN
If the Captain should become injured or incapacitated, many first mates are not
prepared to take over handling the boat, and may not be familiar with
communications, emergency equipment, or other necessary chores usually left to the
Captain. When crew members have little or no experience they may be unprepared
when emergencies arise.
Do you know how to call for help on a marine radio? Do you know how to use a fire
extinguisher, marine distress signals, or how to handle lines? Do you know how to
stop the boat, how to turn it around to pick up an overboard crewman, or safely get
back to shore to meet first responders?
In emergency situations, there is no time to sit and read manuals, so the time to learn
some basic skills is before the emergency arises.
This three hour seminar will not make you an expert, but will teach non-skippers what
is needed to handle many of the skipper duties should the need arise and to give
skippers the tools to train potential first mates and crew. This seminar will also
include a demonstration and use of safety gear highlighted in the seminar.
Date: Saturday, February 11, 2017
Time: 1:00 – 4:00 PM
Location:
The Port of Rochester Marina
1000 N. River Street
Rochester, NY 14612

The Greater Rochester Boat Show
Riverside Convention Center
Feb 2-5, 2017
What’s new for 2017?
We spent some time at the District 6 Fall conference discussing visibility at boat shows. The most successful
program in recent years has been the approach that the Syracuse Sail & Power Squadron has put in place. They
started with a display that includes a Kiddy pool with remote controlled boat activity that attracts people to the
booth, entertains kids (and some adults I bet!), while the parents can be contacted by a Squadron representative.
More recently they have expanded the display by adding the Boating Skills Virtual Trainer as well.
As you can imagine, this is quite an undertaking! But I have been in contact with D/LT/C Jeff Freedman, AP who
has reported this activity at conferences. I believe we can take the first step and add the RC Boat and pool to our
booth and get some experience with larger crowds at our booth. After a fantastic meeting with Dave Heimes of
McMillan Marine, the Boat Show Promoter, I am happy to report that he also likes the idea of the kiddie pool &
RC boat attraction at our booth, and has agreed to a new and larger floor space this year!!
Bridgett Arieno, JN said the new boat passes the FUN TEST!!
We think the booth staffing would need two people per shift; which is what most of our shifts have now.
If you’re interested in problem solving, playing with a remote controlled speed boat, or have a skill for
advertising, contact Rick Hibbs at 752-6046!! It’ll be fun!!

The Rochester Boat Show will take place at the Rochester Convention Center from February 2nd to February 5th
2017.

CNY Boat Show 2016….by D/6 Executive Officer Jeff Freedman and SSPS Educational Officer Tess Freedman
Thanks to all of the 21 volunteers from Syracuse Sail and Power Squadron (SSPS), and to the three from Auburn Power Squadron, one from Utica Sail and Power Squadron and two from St. Lawrence Power Squadron who staffed our expanded booth at the Central New York Boat Show held at the New York State Fairgrounds February 18 – 21, 2016. These 27 volunteers were supplemented by eleven Sea Scouts from Ship 876 at Onondaga Yacht Club and five adults from the Sea Scout program, making a total of 43 volunteers. The extra staffing this year was necessitated by the expanded scope of our exhibit, in which the boating information table was flanked on one side by an inflatable pool with a remote control PWC, and on the other side by the Boating Skills Virtual Trainer, otherwise known as the “boating simulator”.
The picture above on the left shows SSPS members Bill Arnold and Rolf and Ruth Ziemer at the boating information table; the photo on the right shows Don Bacik along with Ed Folts and Tess Freedman. Kudos to Ed for another sustained presence at the Boat Show dispensing boating safety information and to Tess for her yeoman work preparing posters, handouts, course information sheets, squadron contact information and sign-up materials for our booth.
The inflatable pool from Walmart supplied by P/C Frank Misurelly enabled children to guide a remote control PWC from a Styrofoam dock through three pairs of red and green buoys (balloons anchored with lead fishing weights), and safely back to the dock. This boating experience for the younger boating set, ages about two to twelve, was intended to attract families to our booth where the adults could receive boating safety information while the children had fun guiding the toy RC PWC. Note the concentration of the future boaters in the photos below as they steered the RC craft around the pool.
12
The “Boating Skills Virtual Trainer” (BSVT, boating simulator) attracted over 200 boat show attendees; 136 filled out survey forms, with mostly high rankings for “helped gain boating confidence” and “BSVT is a realistic boating experience”. Users were mostly male, ages 4 to 50+, almost all were power boaters with a few sailors and paddlers. Both new and experienced boaters tried the simulator. We received many “awesome”, “great”, “fun”, “realistic” and
“helpful” comments. SSPS members staffing the simulator were assisted by teenage Sea Scouts and their leaders from Ship 876 (hosted by Onondaga Yacht Club). Most users tried the slalom course, with many others trying the docking module (many had trouble docking). Others took off around the “lake” at high speed, and a few teenagers experimented with grounding the boat or ramming a dock. We emphasized safe boating practices, and acquainted the users with our courses and squadron events.
13
With the boating information table, the inflatable pool with a remote control PWC, and the boating simulator, we succeeded in attracting many boat show attendees to our booth where we could distribute schedules of our beginning boating courses as well as advanced courses, and contact information for visitors from other D6 squadrons in our area. We also handed out information about joining SSPS and about vacationing at SSPS’s Binnacle Island. Several visitors, including boat show vendors, expressed interest in joining SSPS or in renting Binnacle Island. Thanks to P/C Frank Misurelly, Steve Vetter, Bill Arnold, and Ed Folts for helping to set up the booth, and to those and Jim Sharpe for helping to take down the booth. Drew Wickham, organizer of the CNY Boat Show for Boating Industries Associates (BIA), complimented our team for the outstanding job we did at providing a family-friendly and fun exhibit that attracts visitors to the show and provides boating safety information in the context of fun virtual and RC boating activities. We in turn thank Drew Wickham and BIA for providing us with the space at the CNY Boat Show for promoting our mission of boating safety.
