GENERAL NOTES The liturgical Ordo here presented is that recommended for the friar, lay Carmelite and other communities of the British Province of Carmelites serving England, Scotland and Wales. The following points should be noted: 1. For this Liturgical Year until Advent 2014

Sunday and Festive Lectionary: Cycle A Weekday Lectionary: Cycle II

2. Abbreviations DO Divine Office – 3 volumes CS Carmelite Supplement (1987) NCS New Carmelite Supplement (1993) EP1 Evening Prayer 1 (First Vespers) Mem Memorial 3. The ‘DO’ page references are for the offices of Morning and Evening

Prayer in the three-volume Divine Office Breviary printed by Collins. The numbers in brackets refer to the book of Morning and Evening Prayer printed by Collins. Page numbers to the Carmelite Supplements (also known as The Carmelite Proper of the Liturgy of the Hours) are those printed by the Institutum Carmelitanum in Rome (currently awaiting updating and reprint).

4. On Ferias (ordinary days) and most Memorias, use the Psalter for the

prescribed week in conjunction with the reference in the Divine Office or Morning and Evening Prayer book. For Feasts and Solemnities follow the indications given in the proper (the part towards the end of the books where the feast days are arranged by date).

ALWAYS TAKE NOTE OF THESE REFERENCES FIRST. 5. Regarding Midday Prayer... On Solemnities, the Antiphons and Psalms

are as noted in the Proper. On Feasts the Hymn, Antiphons and Psalms are normally from the weekday Psalter, unless otherwise noted; the rest is from the Proper or Common. On Ferias and Memorias the whole of Midday Prayer, including the Prayer, is taken from the Feria, unless otherwise noted.

6. The Anniversaries given are those of deceased friar members of the Province, of the Blackburn Nuns, and of the founders and leaders of The Leaven Secular Institute, together with others, including some Tertiaries, who have made a significant contribution to the life of the Carmelite Family in Britain. Local Lay Carmelite communities may wish to include the anniversaries of deceased members in their prayer. When a Carmelite dies it is usual for the Office of the Dead (found at the back of the books) to be prayed for him/her.

7. On Ferias in Advent & Lent, Memorias are celebrated as follows, if desired: at Morning Prayer and Evening Prayer, after the prayer, the conclusion is omitted and the Antiphon & Prayer of the Saint is said with its conclusion.

8. Italics indicate Carmelite Feasts and Anniversaries. For biographies of the Carmelite Saints and Blesseds, along with a commentary on the texts of their Offices, see Fr. Emanuele Boaga, O.Carm., Celebrating the Saints of Carmel, (Rome: Edizioni Carmelitane, 2010). Information on the Order’s holy men and women can also be found on: www.carmelite.org

9. Celebrations which are particular to a specific diocese are not included in this Ordo but normally will be found in the local diocesan directory or yearbook. Feasts of the National Calendars of England, Wales and Scotland are included where appropriate.

10. Where no other celebration takes precedence, it is the custom of the Carmelite Order (cf. 1995 Constitutions §87) to commemorate Saturdays in honour of Our Lady. For the Office the ‘Common of the Blessed Virgin Mary’ and ‘Memoria of the Blessed Virgin Mary on Saturday’ are printed in the various editions of the Office books.

Solemnities of the Lord (such as the Epiphany, the Ascension and Corpus Christi) have been transferred to the appropriate Sunday, as per the decision of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England & Wales. These are shown in the Ordo, and Carmelites in Scotland may need to check the local liturgical calendar for such dates.

Days of Prayer appointed by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England & Wales have been included, as have the Days of Prayer and Action designated by the Carmelite NGO on 5th June (World Environment Day) and 10th December (World Human Rights Day), and the Provincial practice (since 2012) of marking the 16th day of each month as a time of particular prayer for vocations. In keeping with the request of Pope John Paul II, and in solidarity with our enclosed sisters in Carmel, 21st November is marked as Pro Orantibus Day (a Day of Prayer for Those who Pray).

NOTES FOR THE 2014 LITURGICAL ORDO From the Holy See’s Congregation for Divine Worship & The Discipline of the Sacraments On 1st May 2013 the Congregation decreed that the name of Saint Joseph, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is to be added to Eucharistic Prayers II, III and IV, as they appear in the third typical edition of The Roman Missal, after the name of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Further information regarding the Congregation can be found on the website of The Holy See: www.vatican.va/roman_curia/congregations/ccdds/ From the Liturgy Office of England & Wales The Holy See has granted recognitio to the Bishops’ request for Blessed John Paul to be included in the National Calendars for England and for Wales as an Optional Memorial on 22 October. Popes John Paul II and John XXIII will be canonised on 27th April 2014. The Bishops’ Conference has agreed to add to Ordinary Time – Winter the intention of Victims of Human Trafficking and Those who Work to Combat it with a Day of Prayer marked on 8th February (feast of St. Josephine Bakhita). The Bishops’ Conference has also agreed to the moving of the Day of Prayer for Prisoners to the 2nd Sunday in October. Further information regarding the liturgical calendar can be found on the website of The Liturgy Office of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England & Wales: www.liturgyoffice.org.uk

From the Postulator General of the Carmelite Order On 13th October 2013 the beatification of a group of 522 “Martyrs of the 20th Century in Spain” took place in Tarragona, Spain. The Carmelites, Blessed Carmelo Maria Moyano and 9 companions (Bética Province) and Blessed Marco Alemán and 8 companions (Province of Castile) were among the group. Details of the date and texts of their liturgical feast will be printed in the Order’s official journal of record, Anelecta Ordinis Carmelitarum.

From the Carmelite Family in Britain Of particular note for prayer in 2014 are the Friars’ Provincial Chapter in May and the Third Order’s Provincial Assembly in November. A suggested prayer text in preparation for these gatherings is included on page 5. Other noteworthy events in 2014 which merit our prayers are the Scottish Independence Referendum on 18th September, and the Synod of Bishops Extraordinary General Session on the Family between 5th and 9th October. In 2015 the Carmelite Family around the world will mark the 5th centenary of the birth of Saint Teresa of Jesus (of Avila). Different sections of the Carmelite Family will mark the event at various times, and Province-wide celebrations will begin in October 2014. For details visit www.teresaofavila.org

From the Editor Further copies of this Ordo can be obtained from Saint Albert’s Press. It is also available as a PDF file on the Province website: www.carmelite.org/prayer I would like to express my sincere thanks to Br. Gerard Walsh, O.Carm., for his kind assistance once again in compiling the Liturgical Ordo.

PRAYER TO THE HOLY SPIRIT

The following prayer is recommended in the lead-up to the Friars’ Provincial Chapter (5-9 May 2014)

and the Third Order’s Provincial Assembly (28-30 November 2014). All: The Holy Spirit comes to us so that we may know the truth and

be strengthened to walk with Mary our Mother and the prophet Elijah on our pilgrimage to the mountain of God’s glory, Christ our Lord, making the Carmelite way the wellspring of our lives.

Leader: God is our light and our salvation All: Declare his glory among the nations. Leader: Let us pray.

May the Spirit of wisdom and understanding be with us to enable us to listen to the voice of God and the voices of one another, and, in seeking to serve the Kingdom in the Church and in the world, to heed especially the voices of the poor and the oppressed. Through Christ our Lord.

All: Amen.

Under the mantle of your mothering we seek refuge, holy Mother of God. Turn not your eyes from our distress, nor disregard the beseeching voice of sinners, but come to our aid, most glorious and blessed Virgin.

THE CARMELITE CALENDAR

Carmelite Solemnities, Feasts and Memorias are listed in the Ordo below (except when higher ranking observances preclude them this year). It is not the tradition in the communities of the British Province to observe Optional Memorias, except for that of St. Simon Stock because it is observed here as a Feast. They are, however, memorials which are proper to the Carmelite Order, so for those who wish to commemorate them they are included in brackets within the Ordo when other celebrations do not preclude them. Memorials observed by the Discalced Carmelite Order (O.C.D.) but not by the Carmelite Order (O.Carm.) are not listed below, but can be found in the various printings of the Carmelite Supplement to the Breviary.
