Elizabeth Bartlett - Orchestra

Elizabeth Bartlett was born and raised in Johnson City, New York.  She is a graduate of the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education.  While at Crane, she studied Double Bass with Mr. Richard Stephan and Mr. John Geggie. After graduating, Ms. Bartlett returned to the area to teach orchestra and general music for the Binghamton City School District.  She received her Masters in Music from SUNY Binghamton in Double Bass performance under the direction of Mr. Steve Stalker.   Currently, Ms. Bartlett teaches lessons and string orchestra at Roosevelt and MacArthur Elementary Schools in Binghamton.  She is an adjunct instructor for Broome Community College and has a private studio of students. She is an active performer in the community and a member of Binghamton’s Musicians Union, Local 380.   Ms. Bartlett is a member of the Broome County Music Educators Association (BCMEA), the American String Teachers Association (ASTA), and the Southern Tier Music Teachers Association (STMTA).  For the past six summers, she has taught at the New York ASTA String Institute at Ithaca College.  Ms. Bartlett is honored and excited to be conducting this festival, having had many wonderful memories of All-County from her childhood.

James Gleason - Chorus

James Gleason is a native of Virginia, where he obtained his bachelors and masters degrees in music. He studied voice in Italy and performed there and elsewhere in Europe as a Tenor soloist before returning to the US to take up a full time singing career in opera, oratorio and musical theater. He is a graduate of both the Tri-Cities Opera and Houston Grand Opera training programs, and has performed with TCO and many other opera companies, including Houston Grand Opera, and the Virginia Opera. He has performed lead roles in Romeo and Juliet, Tales of Hoffman, Tosca, La Traviata, and many others. He has also sung many lead roles in musical theater, including Oliver, South Pacific, Oklahoma, Fiddler on the Roof, Kismet, The New Moon. He teaches Choral and Vocal Music at Union-Endicott High School, is Minister of Music at Vestal United Methodist Church and lives with his wife in Apalachin, and has three children. Mr. Gleason has taught many master classes in voice, and worked and/or performed with several prominent choral composers and conductors, including John Rutter, Mark Hayes, Darmon Meader, Helmut Rilling, Julius Rudel and several others. He has conducted many musical theater productions and oratorios and also conducted national and regional choral festivals. He serves on the board of several arts organizations, sings the National Anthem for professional hockey and baseball games, maintains active interests in Civil War organizations, and is a soccer referee.

Dr. Nathan Rinnert - Band

Dr. Nathan Rinnert is the Assistant Director of Bands at Mansfield University where he co-directs The Pride of Pennsylvania Marching Band and directs the MU Symphonic Band, the MU Brass Band, and the MU Tuba-Euphonium Consort.  In 2003 Dr. Rinnert initiated the Mountie Sound Machine, a 25-piece, high-energy ensemble that performs at MU basketball games.  In addition, he instructs the tuba studio, supervises instrumental music student teachers, and teaches courses in instrumental music methods and conducting.  Dr. Rinnert is an active performer, educator, clinician, arranger, and researcher, having performed across the U.S. and Japan.  He performed with the 1989 All-American College Band at Disneyland, spent two years playing at the Huis Ten Bosch theme park in Nagasaki, Japan, and enjoyed a five-year stint with Joel Kaye’s “Neophonic Jazz Orchestra,” in Denver, Colorado.  Dr. Rinnert’s PhD in music education and conducting from the University of Miami culminated with a dissertation entitled “A History of the Bands at the Teachers' School in Mansfield, Pennsylvania: 1871-1971.” He also holds a master’s degree in music education from Auburn University and a bachelor’s degree in music education from the University of Kansas. Dr. Rinnert taught public school instrumental music in Paonia, Colorado and Longmont, Colorado, and was the Director of Athletic Bands at the University of Denver.

Dr. Rinnert is the faculty advisor for the Mansfield chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi, and a member of MENC, the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association, the Collegiate Band Directors National Association, the Pennsylvania Collegiate Bandmasters Association, the International Tuba-Euphonium Association, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Pi Kappa Lambda, and Tau Beta Sigma.

Dr. Emily Mason - Chorus

Emily Mason currently teaches courses at Ithaca College in vocal music education and supervises junior and senior student teachers. She holds degrees from Florida State University (Ph.D., Music Education), Ohio State University (M.M., Vocal Performance) and Capital University (B.M., Music Education). Additionally, Dr. Mason has received certification and training in the Kodály Method, Orff-Schulwerk Approach, and Dalcroze-Eurhythmics.  Before arriving at Ithaca College, Dr. Mason was a member of the voice faculty at Millikin University and Ohio Dominican University.  She has also directed Children’s Choirs at Millikin University, Florida State University, and currently conducts the Senior Choir in the Ithaca Children's Choir Program.

Dr. Mason has presented research at state and national conferences including the Music Educators National Conference (MENC) and the Organization of American Kodály Educators (OAKE).  Her research interests include preservice teachers, current teaching methodologies, the child singing voice, and students with special needs.  Dr. Mason has recently been published in Update: Applications of Research in Music Education and received the 2009 Outstanding Researcher Award for a Doctoral Dissertation, from the Organization of American Kodály Educators.  She has served as adjudicator and clinician for state and regional vocal competitions and choral festivals, and currently serves on the National Conference Choir Committee for the Organization of American Kodály Educators.  In the summer of 2010, Dr. Mason toured Austria and the Czech Republic as Assistant Conductor of the Ithaca Children’s Choir.  In addition, Dr. Mason is an active clinician and frequently presents workshops on Music in Early Childhood, the Orff Approach, and the Kodály method.

Robin Linaberry - Band

Robin Linaberry is the Director of Bands at Maine-Endwell Senior High School in Endwell, NY, where he has conducted the Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble and Marching Band since 1987. His daily schedule includes rehearsals of several Band ensembles, as well as lessons for nearly one-hundred fifty students in grades 9-12. Under his direction, the Maine-Endwell groups have earned superior ratings and accolades locally as well as in honor festivals in Boston, Washington, Toronto, NYC, Williamsburg, Orlando, Montreal, Richmond, and Ocean City, and he has also served as Lead Teacher for the Maine-Endwell District. He earned distinguished degrees from Mansfield University (magna cum laud) and from Ithaca College (summa cum laud), and regularly serves as a host for their student teachers.

In addition to his full-time responsibilities, Mr. Linaberry maintains a very active teaching and guest-conducting schedule, especially with select band festivals throughout New York and Pennsylvania including, most recently, the NYSSMA Zone 8 Area All-State Band in Oneonta in November. In addition, he is the Conductor and Music Director for the well-known Southern Tier Concert Band, a professional-level adult concert band of sixty members based in the Binghamton area. He has been on the faculties of Binghamton University as the Wind Ensemble Conductor, Broome Community College as an Adjunct Instructor of Low Brass, and Ithaca College, where he was Conductor of the Brass Choir. For several summers he was the Band Director for the well-known Signature Band & Choir Camp on the campus of Ithaca College. Now he spends his summers as Head Director and Symphonic Band Conductor for the internationally-known American Music Abroad tours. As director of the AMA “Red Tour” Symphonic Band, he has conducted Concerts in Switzerland, Germany, Italy, Austria, France, Belgium, Holland and Luxembourg.

As a performer, Linaberry has been a trombonist with the Binghamton Philharmonic Orchestra, the BC Pops Orchestra, Tri-Cities Opera, the “Ice Capades”, Ringling Brothers – Barnum and Bailey Circus and a large variety of bands and brass ensembles. Linaberry spent two decades performing as an electric bassist and vocalist with numerous groups, including “Classy Brass”, a seven-piece band which counted among its successes a performance for then-President William Clinton in October 2000.

Mr. Linaberry’s professional affiliations include Music Educators National Conference, National Band Association, NYSSMA, the American Federation of Musicians, the New York State Band Directors Association, and the International Trombone Association. He is an award-winning conductor and educator, having been honored with the “Nationally Registered Music Educator” status by MENC and the “ASBDA-Stanbury Award” at the State level (New York) and for the Northeast United States. He has been honored by Maine-Endwell Schools with the “Founder’s Day” award, along with an honorary life membership in the National PTA. Linaberry has been listed several times in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers, The National Dean’s List, and in Outstanding Young Men of America. In 2005, he worked as the featured Band Mentor in the MENC “Ask the Mentor” program. A published author of works about all facets of music education, Linaberry’s articles have been featured in Music Educators Journal, School Band & Orchestra Magazine, The Instrumentalist and The NBA Journal (National Band Association).

Robin Linaberry lives in Owego, NY with his wife and best friend, Patty (an inspirational elementary school teacher). They have two grown children, Whitney and Chris. Robin & his wife have had a tremendous time working as a team with American Music Abroad tours, traveling through Europe during the summer. In any leftover free time, Robin immerses himself in carpentry, reading, writing and music composition projects.

Cayenna Ponchione - Orchestra

Cayenna Ponchione was born and raised in Fairbanks, Alaska, the 'golden heart' of the Alaska interior. She holds graduate degrees in instrumental conducting and percussion performance from Ithaca College, and has served as the sabbatical replacement for percussion faculty Gordon Stout. Cayenna is the music director of the Ithaca Community Orchestra, the GrassRoots Festival Chamber Orchestra and served as the music director of the Binghamton Community Orchestra from 2004-2010. 

Through her work "The Creation," for percussion ensemble, which won the 2003 Percussive Arts Society Composition Contest, Cayenna has received international recognition as a composer. "The Creation," in addition to her other works for percussion has been performed by numerous percussion ensembles throughout the United States and in Central and South America.  Cayenna serves on the board of directors for the Zeltsman Marimba Festival and the ZMF New Music Project, sponsor of the creation and publication of Intermediate Masterworks for Marimba in 2 volumes, addressing the need for repertoire in this area.

Mike Titlebaum - Jazz Ensemble

Since 2008 saxophonist/composer/arranger Mike Titlebaum has been Director of Jazz Studies at Ithaca College, where he directs large jazz ensembles, coaches small combos, teaches jazz saxophone and courses in jazz improvisation, repertoire, arranging, pedagogy and history. He is the founding member of the Ithaca Jazz Quartet and the creator of the Ithaca College Jazz Ensemble Composition Contest and the Ithaca All-Star Jazz Invitational for aspiring high school jazz musicians.

He was born and raised in Rochester, NY, where he earned his BM in Saxophone Performance from the Eastman School of Music in 1991, as well as the coveted Performer's Certificate in Saxophone. He received his MM in 1992 from Eastman in Jazz and Contemporary Media. He has studied with wonderful musicians and teachers such as Rayburn Wright, Ramon Ricker, Fred Sturm, Bill Dobbins, Russell Schmidt, Rich Thompson, Manny Albam, Samuel Adler, Al Regni, Elizabeth Marvin, and many others. As a student, he won nine "DeeBee" awards from DownBeat magazine in multiple categories, including Jazz Performance (on both saxophone and trumpet), Classical Performance, Jazz Arranging, and Jazz Composition.

In 1994, Titlebaum moved to New York City where he enjoyed a very diverse career. He played in many of New York’s world famous musical venues, including the Blue Note, Smalls, Augies, Fez/Time Café and the infamous CBGB's as well as the pit orchestra of the Broadway musical "Cats." He has performed with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, the Binghamton Philharmonic Orchestra, and with dozens of internationally recognized artists and groups such as Jason Robert Brown, Red Rodney, Randy Brecker, the Nelson Riddle Orchestra, the Mingus Big Band, Cab Calloway, Jeff Tyzik, Natalie Cole, Billy Taylor, Mel Torme, Manhattan Transfer, Branford Marsalis, Clark Terry, Lee Konitz, Kenny Wheeler, Billy Hart, Paquito D'Rivera, and many others.

Titlebaum has published numerous compositions and arrangements through Lorenz (Heritage Jazz Works), Advance Music, and GIA Publications. Recent performances of his compositions include a performance of "Danca Latina" by the Hillcrest Wind Ensemble in 2010, "World War II Pizza Man" by the Grinnell Symphony Orchestra in 2007, a performance of "Round Chi-Town" by the Nebraska All-State Jazz Ensemble in 2007, and the recording of "Ornetti" which was released on the disc "With Gratitude" by the Army Blues Jazz Ensemble in 2005.

His interest in educating musicians of all ages has brought Titlebaum to schools and universities across the country where he has directed all-county jazz ensembles and done numerous lectures, clinics and performances. In 1999 he founded the jazz studies department at the American Festival for the Arts in Houston, and subsequently directed the department for 5 summers. He has been on the faculty of Florida A&M University in Tallahassee and the Eastman School of Music, and has taught a wide variety of musical topics at multiple schools in the New York City area.

April Lucas - Band

April Lucas earned both a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Music at Binghamton University and is currently on the faculties of Binghamton University and Broome Community College and a former member of the Hartwick

College music faculty. Ms. Lucas is a founding member of the Empire Saxophone Quartet and has recorded with the Hudson Valley Saxophone Quartet, the Saxophone Sinfonia, the New Sousa Band and the Empire Saxophone Quartet. A former regional director of the North American Saxophone Alliance, Ms. Lucas has served as a clinician and guest conductor throughout New York State. In 2009, Ms. Lucas retired from being a full time instrumental music teacher for the Susquehanna Valley School District. Ms. Lucas is a member of the Binghamton Philharmonic Orchestra, the Tri-Cities Opera Orchestra, and the Southern Tier Concert Band and has been a member of the New Sousa Band under the direction of Keith Brion since 1989. The Band has toured the United States, Japan and this past holiday season, China, where they performed nine concerts in five major cities. In December of 2009 the New Sousa Band was the honored performing group at the Midwest Band and Orchestra Conference. As a featured soloist, Ms. Lucas has appeared with the Southern Tier Concert Band, the Binghamton Community Orchestra and The New Sousa Band.

Conducting groups like this BCMEA Elementary Band and helping them listen to and learn about the music, to see their faces as they realize that THEY are making the music, good music, each one individually, each one playing and extraordinarily important part in working together to make THEIR band the best it can be, is a real honor. Thank you for the opportunity.

David Beck - Orchestra

David C. Beck is currently at Bethlehem Central School District in Delmar NY where he has been a string specialist since 1991. While currently in the high school, Mr. Beck’s duties have included teaching string lessons in grades 6 through 12, the sixth grade orchestra, the 7/8th Grade Orchestra, and currently the High Schools Concert Orchestra and Symphony. During his time at Bethlehem Central Schools, he has also established a Chamber Music Program for Strings. His ensembles have been consistently awarded “Gold” and Gold with Distinction” at the New York State Music Association’s Major Organization Festival and has performed at the Governor’s Mansion in Albany and well as master classes for the Manhattan String Quartet.

Mr. Beck maintains a rigorous schedule as a performer, teacher, NYSSMA Adjudicator, and conductor. For NYSSMA, Mr. Beck is a certified adjudicator for solo/ensembles, All State, and Major Organizations and he is currently the assistant chair for the All-State Orchestra. He has also received various awards for his teaching from Northwest University, The Times Union New Paper, and the Capitol District YMCA to name a few.

Mr. Beck has worked as a festival clinician for elementary, middle, and high school orchestras throughout New York, Connecticut and Florida. He has been a conductor of Orchestras at the Eastern U.S. Music Camp at Colgate University since 1995, and has been on the faculty of Laurel Music Camp in New Hartford Connecticut since from 1987 - 2005. Since March of 2000, he has been the director of the Empire State Repertoire Orchestra in Upstate New York having that orchestra perform in the Troy Music Hall and Ozawa Hall at Tanglewood. Other orchestras that he has worked with include Delmar Community Orchestra as their Music Director from 1999 – 2004 as well as The West Hartford Music, and the Connecticut Valley Chamber Orchestra.

Mr. Beck has maintained an active performing career as a freelance cellist, tubist, bassist, and bass guitarist. He has been a member of several ensembles including the New Britian Symphony, Meridan Symphony, Connecticut Valley Chamber Orchestra, Glens Falls Symphony, the Capital District Wind Ensemble, and the

Schenectady Light Opera Company to name a few. Mr. Beck received his Bachelors of Music Degree in Music Education from Ithaca College where he was a double major on cello and tuba. He received his Masters of Music Degree in Orchestral Conducting from the Hartt School of Music.

Dr. Jirka Kratochvíl - Chorus

After receiving his Bachelor of Music at Pardubice Conservatory of Music in the Czech Republic. Jirka continued his studies at the Charles University in Prague and in Academy of Music in Weimar, Germany. He received his Master of Music degree in 1994 and Doctor of Arts degree in 1997, both at the University of Northern Colorado, where he studied under Dr. Howard Skinner and Dr. German Gutierrez.

Jirka has conducted choruses to international acclaim in over thirty-five countries across Europe, Asia, North and Latin America, the Middle East and Africa. Both as a conductor and vocalist he gave concerts with such artists as Placido Domingo (the BBC production “Carols from Prague” was seen worldwide by more 200 million people worldwide), José Carreras, Kurt Mazur, Erich Leinsdorf, Giuseppe Sinopoli and Claudio Abbado, and also with Moses Hogan and Paul Winter among many others.

In 1995, he became Music director and conductor for the World Vision Youth Ambassador Choir consisting of fifty uniquely talented students from fifty different countries of the world. With this ensemble, Jirka was featured twice on CNN in his performances from the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and in a special concert for the United Nations in New York City. Also with the Youth Ambassadors, he gave private performances for dignitaries including presidents of Guatemala, the Philippines and Taiwan. In 1998 he conducted a series of concerts for the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Human Rights. With this choir he was honored by receiving “Congressional Recognition for outstanding and invaluable service to the community" from Howard Berman, a member of the United States Congress. He also received an honor from the mayor of Los Angeles recognizing the work and mission of the Youth Ambassadors. With the Youth Ambassadors he was selected to perform at the World EXPO 2000 representing Germany.

Dr. Kratochvíl, serves as Chair of the Music Department and Director of Choral Music at Hartwick College, NY, where he has also taught diction, choral conducting, Italian, as well as music history and theory, and where he currently directs several choral ensembles. His work at Hartwick was also recognized on a state level when the Hartwick College Choir was selected to perform as the only college choir representative at the New York State School of Music Association conference. Jirka is a founder of the Hartwick College Choral Festival and Institute, which organizes international choral opportunities for high school and college students abroad. Most recently, in summer 2008, he directed a large international choral festival in Prague, Czech Republic in honor of Moses Hogan. Three of the most distinguished American choral directors - Anton Armstrong, André Thomas and Raymond Wise - joined him and nearly 300 selected singers from across the United States, Russia and Czech Republic for a gala performance in the famed Smetana Hall in Prague.

As the Music Director and Conductor, Dr. Kratochvíl dedicated nearly a decade of his professional career to the Catskill Choral Society in Oneonta, NY. With this chorus he toured internationally and he gave two praised American premieres: Bonhoeffer Oratorium by the American composer Tom Johnson and a re-discovered early 19th century Requiem by the French-Bohemian master Antonín Reicha. Most recently he collaborated with the Prague Philharmonic Choir and its concert tour to Israel, where the choir gave twelve performance of Bach's b minor mass conducted by Peter Schreier. Recently, he also led the Prague Philharmonic Choir in four performances with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra.
