I can’t believe it’s already June! Or, at least it will be by the time you get this issue of the Times.
Important note: the June Board of Directors meeting has
been moved to Wednesday the 14th. Don’t forget! I’ve done a June/July issue for a couple of reasons….One: it’s
too late to do a May issue; and Two: not much will be happening before the SEDiv Double National July 1-3. So the next issue should have a recap of that event.
I wasn’t able to make it up to Roebling Road for the Jim
Stark Memorial SARRC/SARRC races...thanks in large part to the high gasoline prices! I understand that workers were in short supply. But what can you do?! It’s a little too far to ride my bike!!!
Roebling Road is scheduled to undergo repaving Mid-July.
However, the Region is having difficulty obtaining the funds to make this happen. The financing we had fell through, and now we are scrambling to make it happen. We are going to the membership to ask everyone, if they are able at all, to consider helping out your Region maintain and improve an awesome racetrack that everyone in the Southeast, and many across the country, love to visit and race at. Time is of the essence in this matter. If you are interested in helping us out, please contact our
Regional Executive, Ted Migchelbrink. Okay, enough seriousness! Jax Solo results are in this issue, as
well as the Schedule and Supps for the upcoming Double National. There are many other interesting articles, so please, enjoy, and...
Until next time...
Paula Frazier

From the R.E. Hello Buccaneer region,
I have been kind of silent lately, but its time to bring you all up to date with what’s going on in your region.
You have probably heard that we have run into a
problem with the funding for our repaving project at Roebling. The truth of the matter is we do have a problem and are working diligently to solve that problem. We have gone out to the racing community requesting donations of any amount or 5000.00 loans that would be repaid to those lenders at a competitive rate. We need 50 lenders to make that plan work. If there is anyone out there that has CDs maturing or other liquid investments, I would be happy to discuss the details.
Last month we hosted the 2006 edition of our Jim Stark
Double SARRC race and had a great turnout of drivers, unfortunately we could not say the same about worker turnout. It was the lowest worker turn out for a race of this stature that I can remember. The stewards counseled me on options available if we could not muster the staff to pull it off. Thank God we were able to fill all the positions and the race went well. The scary part is that we have 2 more
track events and historically they have been harder to staff than the spring events.
By my calculations we have 300 plus idle members in
our region and the time has come for all our members to dig deep and make the commitment to be a bigger part of a great club. I do not have the time to invite you individually, so please accept this blanket invitation and join a really great team.
We really have a great region. We have two Solo
programs in two cities, 110 miles apart. Our Solo programs host 20 events a year. We are one of three SCCA regions that own their racetrack. We just got a Q45 pace car at the track. All we need now, is you!
We can train you and will help you find your niche.
Please contact any specialty chief, BoD member or myself and we will welcome you and guide you thru the maze.
Thanks for your time. Ted Migchelbrink

The 3rd Annual Spring Thunder Race Car Show was recently held at Orange Park High School in Orange Park, FL on April 28th. Dave Bacher (Buccaneer Region member and racer) is a teacher at the school, and, like the previous 2 years, hosted this car show to give students and teachers alike the opportunity to experience firsthand the sights and sounds and feel of racecars. “We started the cars up at various times during the day and at the end (1:00 pm), we started them all up, which was an awesome sound…the sound of thunder,” explained Susan Bacher, Buccaneer Region member and former Buccaneer Times editor. “There weren’t as many SCCA cars there as last year. A couple of the students displayed their tuner cars also.” Among the SCCA Members’ cars on display were: Bob Eubanks – Rusty Acres AS Mustang Casey Miller – Chevy Nova drag car Mark Bacher – Olds Cutlass (yes Olds, not Dave’s) drag car Dave Bacher— GT1 Olds Cutlass Chief Wells – ITB 914 Porsche Mike Kuiken – Pontiac stock car
Ring Power brought their Caterpillar Dodge stock car. Also there were TWO Ford GT’s. Bill Warner (Amelia Island Concourse presenter) brought a beautiful blue one, which was stock, and Tony Gonyun brought a red one that had twin turbos and sounded awesome! Jimmy Britts displayed a Dash series car and Jake Jacobs a ’57 Chevy Vintage Stock Car.

Watch The SPEED Channel Or Get Watched On The SPEED Channel.
You Get The Picture.
We’ve got several ways to help you break the channel surfing habit...several very exciting ways! We can get you so close to the action you’ll be able to smell the hot brake rotors, the tire smoke, hear the transmissions, listen to high-winding twin-cams and the awesome muscle motors! We can get you involved in a way no TV show can even approach. You can be a part of the action. You can make a difference instead of just being a spectator. Our corner workers and safety crews, along with all of our SCCA personnel, get to do a job that they are proud of! You can too! You don’t have to race a car to be part of the excitement. You just need to be an action person. You just need to want to hang around with a lot of racy people on weekends. If you’ve got the need...we’ve got the action!

The 2nd Gear Race Report Welcome back racers! We now have race #4 under our belts. I apologize for missing out on the Gainesville event. On with the report...
It was a windy and cloudy day at the Whitehouse autocross event. However,
there was a great turnout of racers and spectators. More than 100 cars competed on this day with plenty of peers cheering them on. I noticed as I was walking thru the paddocks it almost looked like the Germans were invading again followed by their Jap allies. But have no fear; the American car count is ever growing. The grids were full of the usual Subys, Nissans, Mazdas, Hondas and Mustangs. The rest of the line up was a great mix-up. There were also good old-school racers, from Saleen style Stangs to Z-cars. I feel with every race we grow more in entries and spectators. We need to keep up the good work.
On to the races. The track was awesome. Each race leads to a new challenge to design a course to keep the racing fast and tight. This was no easy feat. Today’s track
was set-up for some fast runs. It had its tight spots to keep everyone in check. The real trick was the set-up at the end right before the timing lights. Some well placed cones put a few cars viewing the track sideways. Overall, the races went great. Fast and close. I noticed after several runs everyone had the track dialed in, at least in their minds. The results left some wanting a few more runs to better themselves. The groups were split up into smaller amounts of cars due to the overall turnout. This gave many racers a better chance to watch some of the runs, instead of just working them. This also seemed to make the day go by quicker. I personally like the way it ran today.
Well, until the next race at St. Aug. We will all plan on the next chance to beat our rivals. I hope to see all of you there. Until then, “keep it between the cones” guys and good luck to everybody.
If you have any ideas or complaints you can e-mail me at [email protected]. Thanks again for your time. Until next time, keep it between the cones.

Tire Rack® ProSolo Finale and Nationals Warm-Up Event Schedules Revised
SCCA Staff Writers
TOPEKA, Kan. (May 12, 2006) – Sports Car Club of America, Inc. announced today that the schedules for its Tire Rack® SCCA ProSolo Finale and the Tire Rack® SCCA Solo National Championships Warm-Up events have been revised. Citing shape and configuration reasons for not being able to run both a championship caliber ProSolo event at the same time as a meaningful warm-up event on the same pavement that will be used for the Solo Nationals, the ProSolo Finale has been moved to Friday and Saturday, Sept. 22-23. The Kansas Region Warm-Up event will be held Sunday, Sept. 24, as will
the new Test and Tune event. “Our goals are to provide both the opportunity for competitors to test their cars on the new Heartland Park Topeka surface and to provide ProSolo competitors with a true championship-caliber Finale event,” SCCA Solo Director Tasha Marlow said. “The new format allows the majority of Nationals participants the ability to arrive to the event a day later than the old schedule. It also gives us the ability to run both the Warm-Up and the Test and Tune at the same time.” Competitors will have the ability to run both the Warm-Up (full course) and the Test and Tune (shorter course). The ProSolo banquet will remain on its traditional Sunday night, Sept. 24. Registration for the Kansas Region Warm-Up Solo event is now available through www.kansasregionscca.org. The Test and Tune details will be available in July. Plans are also underway to have a single, common technical inspection, so competitors only have to go through tech one time for all the events that make up Nationals.

Solo Nationals News Greetings fellow Soloists!
It is getting closer to the 2006 Tire Rack SCCA Solo Nationals – which starting this year will be held at Heartland Park Topeka (HPT) race track. Because it is a new venue and because it is very different from past Solo Nationals sites, there seems to be much speculation and many wild claims flying around the internet and Solo events around the nation. I hope to address some of these speculations and claims in this letter.
I should probably also mention that Karen Babb and Kevin Youngers, arguably two of the nation’s best Solo course designers, have been assigned as the Course Designers for the 2006 Solo Nationals. All of us arrived a day prior to the 2006 SCCA National Convention to visit the site for mapping and planning purposes.
The following is taken from some excellent correspondence recently received from Karen Babb, and I wholly agree with her observations and comments:
“I have never seen this good of a blacktop surface anywhere. Very close to flat, very smooth.
The HPT site is logistically completely different from Forbes, "New-Salina", or "Old-Salina" in that the courses will in essence be side-by side with a "buffer zone" between them, making it somewhat conceptually akin to a typical Pro Solo layout, but rather larger.
Yes, the overall square footage available to each course is not what it was at Forbes, particularly in comparison to Forbes-North. However, it must be remembered that only a fraction of the Forbes area was actually usable. Typically layouts had to tiptoe among the land mines, trying to use the best (or least bad) of the available surface. Routes were constrained, as were in most cases widths and directions. The actual usable square footage was probably less than 25% of the total area at the North end. The need for overlap and separation had to be dealt with as the surface allowed.
At HPT there are no such issues. No grates, poles, peaks, valleys, holes, frost heaves, snakes, etc. So the course can be routed wherever it needs to as the desired elements and separation requirements dictate, not as the surface dictates. This offers considerable freedom in what elements can be used, how they can be connected, and how they can be oriented, even within the constraints of needing the Start and Finish on a particular end of the available area. This type of openness makes possible the use of a variety of space-saving methods that can if necessary compensate for a somewhat smaller overall area.
The route length on my 2003 South course was approximately 3650 feet; available route lengths in
preliminary sketches on the left side of the HPT pad have yielded lengths of 3500-4000 feet. It’s largely a matter of being able to make the best use of the available space. Many details (e.g. Grid locations and ingress/egress points) have yet to be finalized, but it looks pretty good at this point.
It should be remembered that a very big complaint year after year from members at the Town Meeting was about the deteriorating Forbes surface. The move to HPT was largely driven by this input. It seems counter-productive for members to assume the worst about getting something they asked for, even before they see the actual hands-on results of the change.
At this point I'd just ask that people stay tuned and have a little faith in the event Chairman, the course designers, the Nationals event officials team, and the National Staff to provide a Solo Nationals that won't beat their car to death, and will offer improvements they can all appreciate. Yes, it will be different. No, it won't be perfect. Yes, it will evolve. That's all fine with me.” – Karen Babb
I would like to add to her comments that holding the Solo Nationals at a purpose built race facility, instead of a location designed and meant for other uses, really makes a positive impression. Everything at the site is about racing and competition. This means that HPT has erected buildings designed solely to function for the needs of automotive competition. For example, the scales are permanently mounted and located inside tech/impound building – out of the weather. There are real toilets (flushies!), a paddock wide public address system, garages for rent, a registration building/parking lot that is on the way in. There is also a beautiful track that surrounds the paddock and Solo course area. Who knows – there may even be cars running the track while we are there! All of this adds greatly to the overall competitive feeling and gives credibility to what we do. It only seems fitting that the Solo Nationals be held in a purpose built race facility instead of a parking lot – a place where the Nation’s best will compete for a chance to earn their 2006 Solo National Championships.
If I may steal a line from Karen’s correspondence above, I think it is worth repeating:
“Yes, it will be different. No, it won't be perfect. Yes, it will evolve. That's all fine with me”
See you at the 2006 Solo Nationals

Hale Motorsports Announces Hole In The Wall Camp Awareness Program Courtesy of Hale Motorsports
Old Saybrook, Conn. (May 16, 2006) -Hale Motorsports has announced a program to build awareness of the “Hole In The Wall Camps,” founded by Paul Newman, for children and their families coping with cancer and other life threatening illnesses. Hale Motorsports will race a Mazda MX-5 Cup car, with the “Hole In The Wall Camps” logo, in the new 2006 SCCA Pro Racing SIRIUS Satellite Radio Mazda MX-5 Cup Presented by Hankook series and support this effort by creating a Hole In The Wall Camp presence at each race with special events and outreach programs. The initial appearance of the Hole In The Wall Camps Mazda MX-5 Cup car will be at Lime Rock Park in Lakeville, Connecticut on Memorial Day Weekend, May 26 – May 29. Hole In The Wall campers, their families and camp staff will be invited to join the race team during the weekend for a behind the scene look at and a taste of what goes on during a race weekend. In addition, on race day, children of race fans will be invited to get a close-up look at the Hale Motorsports Hole In The Wall Camp Mazda MX-5 and show their support of the Hole In The Wall Camp.
“Our goal is to raise awareness of and funds for the camp,” said Randy Hale of Hale Motorsports. “We want all the kids to have a chance to feel like they are a part of the race team.” “The Hole In The Wall Camps are honored to be participating with Hale Motorsports in this event at Lime Rock Park,” said Hole In the Wall Executive Director James Canton. “Our founder, Paul Newman, has had a long association with motorsports as both a team owner and competitor.
Motorsports fans are noted for their enthusiasm and generosity, and we hope that the campers and their families will benefit directly from that support.” The Hole In The Wall Camps serve children dealing with chronic and life-threatening illnesses by creating memorable, old-fashioned camping experiences. With state-of-the-art medical services available, children are empowered, in the words of Paul Newman, “to kick back, relax and raise a little hell.” There are currently four camps in the United States and two overseas. No child
or family pays to attend a Hole In The Wall Camp. For more information about The Hole in the Wall Camp, contact Mike Smiles at 203-772-0522 or [email protected]. For more information about Hale Motorsports, contact Randy Hale at 860-399-4603.

The President’s Corner It’s been two months, so I’m told that I can’t duck the
President’s Column any longer. It has been long enough, however, that I think we can dispense with the college and job history stuff. I also have a wonderful family and have led a fairly interesting life up till now, but I suspect that none of that really interests you as much as where I see the SCCA today and where I see it going.
As I said at the convention, the SCCA is a wonderful organization composed of thousands of wonderful and passionate automotive and racing enthusiasts. While it seems to me that I have met most of you in the last two months, I know that I’ve only scratched the surface. But the hundreds of you that I have met haven’t changed my mind on that subject one bit. I also said at the convention that the SCCA was an organization of tremendous heritage, serving a noble purpose and satisfying a real need in both the world of racing and the world of automobiles. After two months, I believe this to be truer than when I first said it.
However, like anything that has passed its 60th birthday, whether it’s a person, house or classic car, you only begin to see the defects when you are able to spend some time with it. The SCCA is no exception and after two months here is a short list of some of the things I think we all need to work on: • We need more members, especially younger ones. • We need to hang on to more of our current members each year. • We need to improve communications between the national office, the Regions and the membership; and that communication
needs to work both ways. • We need to make some of our racing classes more relevant to the auto companies. • We need to do a lot better job recognizing the tremendous contribution made by our volunteer workers. Without them we have no club. • Finally, we need a better business model than today. One that has sources of revenue other than member fees, entry fees and licenses.
Now just like a classic Ferrari with an oil leak or an old Jag with wiring by Lucas, there’s just too much right about those cars and the SCCA to just jump in and start fixing things with a hammer and saw. NO, we have to be careful, almost surgical; in our efforts to make sure that as we are fixing the problems we aren’t diminishing the strengths or the things we do right; or, heaven forbid, creating new problems in the process. Over the coming months, you will hear more on each of those subjects, where we are heading and specific plans to get there.
I, for one, am optimistic. While I know that Rome wasn’t built in a day, sooner or later, someone has to star piling up some rocks. I’ve got a few already stacked up in my office and I’m looking for some strong back to join me.

United Spinal to Celebrate 60 Years of Helping Individuals With Spinal Cord Injuries and Disorders New York, NY––United Spinal Association is proud to announce that 2006 marks 60 years of empowering, renewing, and enhancing the lives of individuals with spinal cord injuries and disorders (SCI/D). Launched in 1946 by a small group of World War II veterans paralyzed on the battlefields of Europe and the Pacific, this member-based organization––founded as Eastern Paralyzed Veterans Association––has grown into one of the nation’s premier advocates for people with disabilities. “United Spinal Association is made up of thousands of individuals with SCI/D who have committed themselves to living, working, raising a family, achieving their dreams and conquering their fears,” said Executive Director Gerard M. Kelly. “The core belief of the membership and the staff of United Spinal has remained unchanged for over 60 years––that, despite spinal cord impairment, a full, productive, and rewarding life is not only possible, it is within the reach of anyone with the strength to
believe it and the courage to make it happen.” United Spinal’s initiatives in research and education, government policy and legislation, civil rights and advocacy, accessibility and architectural design, and competitive athletics have made it the fastest-growing not-for-profit in America dedicated to helping those with SCI/D. The Association played a prominent role in drafting such landmark legislation as the Americans With Disabilities Act, the Fair Housing Act and the Air Carrier Access Act; to date United Spinal has provided over $52 million for cutting-edge spinal cord research and helped launch two of the most prominent research facilities in the nation at the Yale School of Medicine and the James J. Peters Veterans Affairs Medical Center in the Bronx, New York (named after the Association’s late executive director); its adaptive sports programs are nationally known and have brought the proven physical and psychological benefits of adaptive sports to generations of individuals with disabilities. And for our veterans, United Spinal’s lobbying efforts helped get legislation passed in record time that will provide traumatic injury insurance for our soldiers returning from conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. With 60 years of experience, United Spinal also offers a variety of

(Continued from page 20) generous, need-based stipends to members for improving accessibility in their homes and apartments and for installing adaptive controls for automobiles. Approximately 700,000 Americans have spinal cord disabilities as a result of traumatic injury, multiple sclerosis, polio, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, spina bifida or other diseases. Membership in United Spinal is free and open to any individuals with these disabilities, regardless of age. Its Accessibility Services program provides innovative solutions for architects, developers, building owners and managers needing assistance in understanding or complying with the latest state and federal accessibility requirements for people with disabilities. United Spinal also provides expert wheelchair sales and service through Wheelchair Medic (based in Fort Totten in Bayside, NY) and recently unveiled a unique new travel agency called ABLE to Travel that offers professional travel agents with wide experience in searching out accessible hotels, airports, aircraft, bus services, rental equipment, trains, cruise ships, and every mode of travel or accommodation in between. “As we toast our 60th Anniversary, United Spinal stands at a critical new juncture. We have expanded nationwide and launched a bold new mission offering our services to more people
than ever before. Complementing our longstanding commitment to serving America’s paralyzed veterans, we’re now reaching out to everyone with SCI/D across the country,” Kelly noted. “We eagerly embrace these new challenges and we look forward with confidence to our next 60 years.” For more information on the many programs of United Spinal Association, please visit www.unitedspinal.org or call 800- 404-2898.
Inside Line Editor’s Note: The SCCA’ Region Development department is engaging in a cooperative effort with the United Spinal Association. Tom Scott, the Association’s editor of their on-line magazine Action, has written an article on Solo event accessibility to those with hand controlled cars. Featuring SCCA soloist Jerry Lamb, the story can be found on the organization’s website noted below. The RDD will be handling inquiries from Spinal Association members wishing to participate in local events by placing them in contact with REs and Membership Chairpersons for further information. The United Spinal Association and the SCCA are very excited about this relationship and the opportunities that are available to their members in our sport.

Time Trials The national office is getting several calls and emails each week from new/potential members looking for PDX events in their area. Many of these are from people in areas not currently holding PDX or Club Trial events. If your region is not holding an event of this type, you are probably missing an opportunity for new members and participants. In addition to the youth market, there is also a growing market for those middle aged, financially stable car enthusiasts that want to put their “sportscars” on a race track in a controlled environment. While this may not lead to increased participation in traditional Club Racing events, it is a source of new members, new programs and perhaps new volunteer administrators for a region. Mid week events are also attractive to this crowd and are less expensive to run if your local track is looking to fill weekdays. Look to non-traditional populations for staffing of these events as well (experienced personnel needed in some areas, but not all) if your existing volunteers are tapped out.

Memo From Tasha: 2006 Minor Waivers To: Region Executives; Regional Solo Chairpersons
From: Tasha Goodale Marlow, Director Solo
Re: Minor waivers
Since my last note in this publication concerning minor waivers a couple of other items have come to light. So I want to share this information with you.
1. The minor ID card that is available for the annual/multi-event waiver is blue this year and not yellow. (Editors Note: Please see the Blue Minor ID Card sample at the end of Tasha’s memo.)
2. A Club Racing “W” minor waiver license is not acceptable at Solo events. The "W" program was not designed for and is not applicable to Solo events. This license is strictly for 16 and 17 year olds competing in Club Racing events.
3. The SEB included the following in their minutes in the March Fastrack. Although this will not be mandatory until 2007, I would encourage each region to make every effort to put this into effect for the 2006 season. In discussions with Pete Lyons, Risk Management Department, we need to focus on ensuring the waivers are filled out consistently and correctly.
Effective 1/1/2007, add the following new section 5.5 and renumber the subsequent sections accordingly:
5.5 CHIEF OF WAIVERS The Chief of Waivers shall be responsible for ensuring that the waiver function complies with the requirements of the SCCA insurance coverage as regards Solo events. Specifically, the Chief of Waivers shall ensure that the following are met: A. The waiver function follows the Rally/Solo guidelines.
B. All waivers used at an event are correctly signed, witnessed, and completed, including the event designation, location, date, and all required signee and witness information.
C. Necessary supplies and equipment are maintained as applicable.
D. Waiver workers are on duty from the time the gate or site is opened until the event has been completed.
E. Waiver workers have been recruited, trained, and assigned in cooperation with the Chief of Workers.
F. Waiver workers are SCCA members. G. Communication is provided between the waiver station(s)
and event administration. H. Waivers are properly stored for 3 to 5 years.
This position shall be filled by an SCCA member. It is strongly recommended that the Chief of Waivers perform no other duties for the event.
Thank you in advance for following these guidelines and making Solo events enjoyable and safe.
