Working together to make a difference IS A

KIND THING TO DO

Grand Exalted Ruler Michael Luher has adopted, “Working together to make a difference” as his theme for his year as GER. I have adopted, “Be kind in all you do” as my theme. Working together is a concept we all learn very early in childhood. This being said it seems to a concept that organi-zations across our globe struggle with regularly. Effort without results is a real waste, making a difference is hard to measure without applying measurable goals. Being kind in all you do is chal-lenging but very rewarding. Putting this all together speaks directly to the work involved within Elkdom. We have all experienced a car that runs rough or a lawnmower that won’t start, these are frus-trating times indeed. In the end the lesson resonates as something we have all heard and tend to ignore. “A little maintenance and this will run just fine”. Wow, how true is this? Adding the right fuel, keeping things oiled and making sure the spark is strong and these modern conveniences be-come our reliable friend. This is true to the membership in our order as well. If everything is run-ning well it is easy to be kind and spread kindness. It is when the motor is running a little rough or is hard to start that kindness goes right out the window. Remember being kind in all you do means being kind when things are not running smooth. Sometimes the kindness you give is all that makes the spark in someone’s life turn strong again. I am certain we all will get more done if we are kind to one another and work together. We will measure the results of our efforts by retaining and growing our membership with kind people. Make 2019 the year that kindness resonates in all you do as we work together to make a differ-ence” Dan Hrouda Exalted Ruler BPOE Lakewood #1777

Veterans Committee Serves Supper At Archway Housing

On January 15th, the Veterans Committee served supper to approximately 30 veterans who live at Archway Hous-

ing. The meal consisted of several ham slices, macaroni and cheese, corn, salad, rolls with butter and several bunt

cakes for desert.

In addition, each veteran was gifted with a pullover hoodie sweatshirt.

Veterans Committee — Tom Kelly

The Veterans’ Committee at our lodge honors, and occasionally entertains, the military veterans who are members of our lodge. Additionally, the committee seeks to assist non-member veterans in our local community who are in need. Many of them suffer from combat or combat-related Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD. Of course, we can’t diagnose or treat PTSD. However, we can help some of those suffering the effects of this con-dition by providing them with needed items, such as a hot meal, winter clothing, welcome home kits when they are transitioning from homelessness, and some friendly and understanding conversation.

How Common is PTSD in veterans? The number of veterans with PTSD varies by the era in which they served:

Operations Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and Enduring Freedom (OEF): somewhere between 11 and 20% who served in OIF or OEF have PTSD in any given year;

Gulf War (Desert Storm): About 12% have PTSD in any given year; Vietnam War: About 15% were currently diagnosed with PTSD at the time of the most recent study in the

late 1980s. It is estimated that about 30% of Vietnam veterans have had PTSD in their lifetime. Besides combat or combat-related PTSD, another cause of PTSD can be military sexual trauma (MST). MST

refers to sexual assault or repeated, threatening sexual harassment that happened while a veteran was in the mili-tary. This can happen to both women and men. However, it is more prevalent among females.

55% of female veterans who use VA health care reported experiencing sexual harassment while in the mili-tary; and 23% reported being sexually assaulted.

38% of male veterans who use VA health care reported experiencing sexual harassment while in the mili-tary.

Thus, while MST is more prevalent among female veterans, many of the veterans who report experiencing MST are men.

The Elk Membership Card I hold in my hand a little scrap of paper 2 ½ x 3 ½ inches in size. It is of no intrinsic worth, not a bond, not a check or a receipt for valuables, yet it is my most priceless possession. It is my membership card in an Elks Lodge. It tells me that I have entered into a spiritual kinship with my fellow Elks to practice Charity, Justice, Brotherly Love and Fidelity in very word and deed; to forgive and forget the faults of my fellow members; to hush the tongues of scandal and innuendo; to care for the crippled, the hungry and the sick, and to be fair and just to all mankind. It tells me that no matter where I may travel in the world, I am welcome to visit a place where good fellowship prevails among friends. It tells me that my loved ones, my home, and my household are under the protection of every member of this great Fraternity, who has sworn to defend and protect mine as I have sworn to defend and protect theirs. It tells me that should I ever be overtaken by adversity or misfortune through no fault of my own, the hands of every Elk on the face of the earth will be stretched forth to assist me in my necessities. It tells me that, and a great deal more, this little card, and makes me proud yet humble, that I can possess this passport into a society of friends that are numbered in the millions. And finally, it tells me that when my final exit from the stage of life has been made, there will be gathered around my lifeless body, friends who will recall to mind my virtues, though they be but few, and will forget my faults, though they may be many.

One Room Fits All By

Bob Laster Imagine a school without a principal, counselor, psychologist, nurse, janitor, crossing guard, buses, refrig-eration, air conditioning, teacher lounges, electricity, hot and cold running water, cell phones, computers, orga-nized sports, auditorium, gym, TV and cafeteria. The above could be a description of a one-room schoolhouse in early America. Because of the agrarian economy the infant country had a pressing need for con-venient educational centers that were readily accessible by walking or by horse and buggy. School houses were made of wood, brick, logs, stucco, stone or metal built into a square, rectangle, hexagon, octagon, or round shape. Windows were placed in the best location for maximum light and summer breezes. Desks or tables were available. A wood or coal stove not only provided warmth, but also was used for cooking. Only a dedicated teacher could make success with this system. He or she had to be prepared to handle students attending kindergarten through eighth grade. The teacher had to correctly assess the needs of every kid. Fortunately, older students would help the younger ones. The teacher also had to take into account some students had to help their parents with the farm. It was a life that can never be duplicated. Many of the houses were demolished or fell down. Others have become historical sites. A few are still operating. Special accolade to the one-room schoolhouse professionals who made the system benefit students, parents, communities, states and America.
