You have to get out there and make your opportunities. Making the time and financial commitment to attend networking events of a chamber and similar groups is a great investment for most businesses. Plugging in at chamber-type networking events is a key component to a successful busi- ness marketing plan. As part of your membership, or for a small fee, you can usually access a chamber’s database or members with physical and e-mail addresses. As I often say, marketing is about having multiple touch-points that reinforce each other. So if you are present and active at chamber networking events, imagine how much more effective you can be with an ongo- ing direct mail and blast e-mail program to that same group. In the end, you’re trying to be top-of-mind with key business leaders who will either do business with you or be a key referral source. Consistently communicating with this database of chamber members can supercharge your efforts. Joining a business group such as a chamber of commerce or membership-based economic development organization can be a great move for your business. Simply joining these groups can provide many benefits, such as special rates on insurance coverage and referrals. But if you want to leverage these memberships to grow your business, it’s important to fully tap their potential for your company’s marketing program.

If you sit by the phone and think it is going to ring because you’re now a member of the chamber, it might, but you would really be limiting yourself. You have to get out there

and make your opportunities.Making the time and financial commitment

to attend networking events of a chamber and similar groups is a great investment for most businesses. Working the room at chamber events puts you in front of a lot of decision-makers if you want to promote yourself to businesses who may want your product or ser-vice. Even if your business is solely focused on direct-to-consumer sales, chamber networking can connect you to future strategic partners. Plugging in at chamber-type networking events is a key component to a successful busi-ness marketing plan.

One of the greatest assets you can gain by joining a business organization is access to the group’s database. As part of your membership, or for a small fee, you can usually access a chamber’s database or members with physical and e-mail addresses.

As I often say, marketing is about having

multiple touch-points that reinforce each other. So if you are present and active at chamber networking events, imagine how much more effective you can be with an ongo-ing direct mail and blast e-mail program to that same group. In the end, you’re trying to be top-of-mind with key business leaders who will either do business with you or be a key referral source. Consistently communicating with this database of chamber members can supercharge your efforts.

Finally, one of the most important ways a chamber can help your marketing is with

new ideas on how to stand out in the market. Groups frequently conduct seminars with im-portant topics such as the best ways to stretch your marketing dollars and how to use social media for promotion. Many companies cannot afford to have an in-house director of market-ing or advertising agency. But you can always depend on chambers and economic develop-ment organizations to provide educational programs that are relevant and timely on how to pump up your company’s marketing.

Every great organization must take the time to recognize and pay tribute to the many individuals who repeatedly donate one of their most precious resources, their time, to help further the mission and

vision of the business. In this message, I especially want to recognize our many dedicated and wonderful committee chairs and co-chairs. Without them, it would be impossible to truly understand the needs of the businesses we serve

and the community where we are honored to live and work. They tirelessly give of their expertise and

resources, and provide a wealth of knowledge, sup-port, and dynamic, positive energy. Alongside the chairs, individual committee members contribute their valuable resources and add clarity, focus, and strength to the foundation of the organization.

On behalf of the Orange County Chamber Board of Directors, I would like to say “Thank you” to all the committee chairs and their mem-bers for being one of the “rocks” on which the Chamber continues to build a strong, firm and profitable foundation for all those who work and live in Orange County.

If I had 10 wishes, they would be…

Johnson

…that it won’t be business as usual in Albany in 2011.

…that New York State will become more business-friendly.

…that health insurance premiums will be held to no more than the cost of living.

…that the state Legislature and Governor will finally realize the gross injustice of the MTA payroll tax and do something about it.

…that so many people didn’t have to wake up each morning wondering if they’ll still have a job at the end of the day.

…that our non-profit organizations will receive the support they so desperately need.

…that businesses and consumers alike will realize the importance of buying products

and services locally.

…that everyone will truly understand that we need to work together to deal with the many challenges that face us.

…that more of our members will take better advantage of what the Orange County Chamber can do for them.

…that 2011 will prove to more prosper-ous than 2010 for all of our members and everyone in the community.

CORRECTION: The mission of the Mid-Hudson Workshop for the Disabled is to provide meaningful work for disabled veter-ans and other physically or medically (NOT “mentally” as was incorrectly published in last month’s Viewpoint) handicapped area residents. This mission has been built upon three times since last year with the hiring of four staff-ers. MHW is proud to report that two of those hires are disabled veterans. The combination of these additions and newer slots to-be-filled will have helped grow staffing by 50%. Individuals seeking work who fit MHW’s mission and pos-sess assembly skills are encouraged to apply by visiting www.midhudsonworkshop.org, where a downloadable employment application PDF file may be obtained. Applicants should forward completed applications to Ralph Malone at MHW’s 188 Washington Street, Poughkeepsie address to arrange immediate interviews.

Bruce Perry of Perry Heating and Cooling, Inc. says that demand water heaters can be 24-34% more effective than conventional storage tank water heaters. Demand water heaters heat water directly as needed, without the cost of a storage tank, so standby heat losses associated with storage type water heaters are eliminated. Demand water heaters are more expensive than

storage water heaters, but that cost is offset by lower operating costs. For more information, visit www.perryphc.com or call 534-4270.

in the

Larkin Community Room OC Chamber Business Center 30 Scott’s Corners Drive, Montgomery

9:00 a.m.-12:00 noon

International Trade Seminar

Guest Speaker Robert Stein

Certified Customs Specialist & Vice President of Customs & Trade Compliances Mohawk Global Logistics

The seminar will cover how Incoterms have changed, what terms have been eliminated, how the changes will affect your business and information about the role that Incoterms play in sales contracts.

Robert Stein’s extensive experience in customs brokerage and freight forwarding is spread across a multitude of roles, giving him a unique perspective on the field. Working at the northern border, in both release and entry roles, helped him learn a great deal about cross border trade and NAFTA. His work as a regional FDA trainer and vice president for a brokerage/freight forwarding firm gave him a deeper understanding of trade compliance. He is a frequent speaker to the trade community on topics including Incoterms, import compliance and NAFTA.
