The Authority established a Citizens Ad- visory Panel to solicit input from individuals throughout the Hudson Valley, including local elected officials, business, community and envi- ronmental leaders, frequent flyers and represen- tatives from economic development, colleges and the travel industry. Said Dr. D’Ambrosio, “I am honored to be a part of this group and have been impressed by the way in which the Port Authority has responded to our recom- mendations.” The CAP has broad representa- tion from Orange, Dutchess, Putnam, Rock- land and Ulster counties. Concerned by recent negativity directed at the Port Authority and its handling of Stewart Airport, the Chamber President wrote an op-ed piece that was published in the Times Herald- Record. In part, the President said, “The unwar- ranted antagonism and unfounded criticism directed at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is very disturbing.” He continued, “I can say with utmost confidence that the Port Authority has done absolutely nothing to warrant these attacks. The success of Stewart International Air-port has been a priority for the Orange County Chamber of Commerce for decades. The last time we highlighted the airport on the cover of this publication was December 2007, just weeks after the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey assumed operations there. At the time, Chamber President Dr. John D’Ambrosio was quoted as saying that the Port Authority has the “juice” to make things happen at Stewart. Now, nearly four years and $50 million later, that juice is definitely flowing.

In terms of airlines, Delta now offers an ad-ditional daily flight to Atlanta. JetBlue has done the same for service to Orlando. Load factors for last year were greater than 80% all year. More pas-sengers were served in 2010 than 2009, and it is expected that 400,000 passengers will use Stewart this year. New service to Cancun was established, celebrated with an inaugural flight on February 12, complete with a Mariachi band. Travelers in-cluded Sen. Bill Larkin and his wife. In addition, the Port Authority Board approved an incentive package to attract new carriers.

Air cargo grew significantly, gaining more than 20% in 2010 over 2009 levels, primarily due to additional FedEx flights.

A “Think SWF” campaign, originally con-ceived as a local concept by the Orange County Chamber and the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce, was utilized by Port Au-thority Marketing and won the Platinum Award by Hermes, which recognizes creativity and inno-vation in advertising.

More than 800 new spaces were added to the main parking lot at SWF. Abiding by the Chamber’s “buy local” refrain, the Port Authority

ensured that nine out of 20 contracts awarded for projects at the airport went to local contractors. Looking toward the future, planning funds for the proposed expansion of the terminal have been approved by the Port Authority Board.

“In all areas,” said Dr. D’Ambrosio, “planning, operations and construction, the Port Authority has demonstrated its commitment to the airport while also being a good corporate citizen, a re-sponsible environmental steward and a true eco-nomic engine for the regional economy.”

The Port Authority’s commitment has not stopped at the gates to the airport. The agency’s community involvement is significant. PA staff have participated in local business expositions, conducted workshops on “How to Do Business with the Port Authority” (one such session will be held at the Chamber on June 17), and been involved in a number of other community func-tions.

Diannae C. Ehler, General Manager, is a member of the Chamber’s Board of Directors, as well as the Board of the Orange County Partner-

ship. Assistant Director of Aviation Public Affairs Ralph Tragale serves on the Board of Hudson Valley Pattern for Progress.

In another “think local” effort, the Port Au-thority Board approved the agency’s purchase of 163,000 megawatt hours of environmental attributes annually through 2032 to support the Taylor Biomass Energy project and help promote sustainable jobs in Orange County.

The Authority established a Citizens Ad-visory Panel to solicit input from individuals throughout the Hudson Valley, including local elected officials, business, community and envi-ronmental leaders, frequent flyers and represen-tatives from economic development, colleges and the travel industry. Said Dr. D’Ambrosio, “I am honored to be a part of this group and have been impressed by the way in which the Port Authority has responded to our recom-mendations.” The CAP has broad representa-tion from Orange, Dutchess, Putnam, Rock-land and Ulster counties.

Concerned by recent negativity directed at

the Port Authority and its handling of Stewart Airport, the Chamber President wrote an op-ed piece that was published in the Times Herald-Record. In part, the President said, “The unwar-ranted antagonism and unfounded criticism directed at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is very disturbing.” He continued, “I can say with utmost confidence that the Port Authority has done absolutely nothing to warrant these attacks. Rather, the depth of the agency’s commitment to our airport is nothing short of extraordinary.”

The facts indicate that the Port Authority’s commitment goes way beyond extraordinary.

Certify your business as sustainableThe Orange County Chamber, SUNY

Orange and Greenopia, an industry leader in “green”-rated brands and services, are collaborating on a unique partnership that will allow Chamber members to gain certification as sustainable. The program establishes a credible system to substanti-ate the levels of eco-commitment by Or-ange County businesses and, according to Chamber President Dr. John D’Ambrosio, “will revolutionize the way we do business in Orange County.”

Businesses interested in certifica-tion should visit www.orangeny.com and

complete a preliminary application. The Chamber will forward completed appli-cations to Greenopia which will review them. An invoice for the certification fee will be sent to the applicant, who will then be contacted by a student intern from SUNY Orange for further review of the business’ suitability for certifica-tion. The intern will submit a report to Greenopia. When Greenopia approves the application, the business will receive a sustainability sticker and promotion by the Chamber as having achieved certifi-cation.

But wait, there’s more……No matter how hard we try to get the word out about all

the benefits and opportunities that are available to Cham-ber members, I’m always amazed when I hear a member say, “I didn’t know that!” So, here are a few of the benefits that you might not know are available to you as part of your membership investment: ● News about your company printed in monthly Cham-

ber Business Viewpoint (circulation: 60,000+)● Link to your business on the website● FaceBook, LinkedIn and Twitter social network marketing● Your events listed on website Community Calendar● Meeting and conference room space● Members on Monday luncheons ● Afterhours mixers● Notary Public service● Display of your flyers/business cards in Chamber lobby● Business counseling ● New Member Orientations (whether you’re a new member or not)● Legislative representation by one of the largest chambers of commerce in New York

State. Of course, the above are all in addition to the many other “traditional” advantages that

come with being part of an active chamber of commerce. If you have any questions, please call anyone here at the Chamber (457-9700) or stop in

anytime. Oh, that’s another perk for you: this beautiful new Chamber Business Center in Montgomery is YOURS.

John A. D’Ambrosio, Ed.D.President

Chairman’s MessageWow, we’re already into sixth month of

2011. And, finally it seems warmer weather is here to stay. So, it’s the perfect time to step back and reevaluate how your Chamber membership is working for you. I want to

take this opportunity to remind you of two im-portant aspects of busi-ness success: networking and professional devel-opment.

First, it’s easy to be-come so busy working on your business that

you forget to continue to widen your net-work. For continued business success, you must have various styles of networks. For example, an operational network is mostly people you depend on to get work done. On the other hand, a developmental network

will have several individuals whom you trust and to whom you can turn to for advice. You should also have a strategic network to help you prepare you for future business success. Next, how much time have you spent in professional development this year? Things happen at lightning speed and you must keep abreast, or surround yourself with those who do, if you want to take advan-tage of opportunities and be prepared for changes.

The Chamber can help you in both of these areas. We offer a wide variety of experts and networking and professional development events that can help you and your business succeed. Take the time this month to evaluate how you’re doing in those areas and give us a call. We’re here for you!

Want to do business with the Port Authority?

The session will be held in the Larkin Room at the Orange County Chamber Business Center in Montgomery from 10:00 a.m.-noon. It is co-hosted by the Air Service Development Office at Stewart Airport.

This will be an excellent opportunity for local businesses to network with the airline and aviation companies at Stewart, as well as with the Port Authority. A complimentary breakfast will be served.

Space is limited for this forum that, in prior years, has filled the room, so make a reservation as soon as possible by calling Roseann at the Chamber at 457-9700 or visit www.orangeny.com.

Reducing regulatory burdens on businesses and reviving the economy through job creation are also top priorities.

What’s so special about Organic Coffee Klotch coffee? Delicious, 100% gourmet Arabica Brazilian beans infused with Ganoderma. For centuries, this Reishi herb has been prescribed for stress and coronary ar-tery disease-related angina symptoms because it improves blood flow and lowers oxygen consumption in the heart muscle. Reishi contains gan-oderic acids (triterpenes) that lower high blood pressure and cholesterol while inhibiting platelet aggregation that leads to heart attacks and circula-tory problems. Choose a heart-smart daily coffee. Check out the research at Pubmed.gov, then contact Dr. Lois Tannenbaum at [email protected] or call 527-7913 for seminars, gift giving ideas and free samples.
