HAPPY NEW YEAR!
BOCCE BALL
Throwing balls toward a target is the oldest game known to
mankind. As early as 5000 B.C. the Egyptians played a form of
Bocce with polished rocks. While Bocce today looks quite
different from its early predecessors, the unbroken thread of
Bocce’s lineage is the consistently common objective of trying
to come as close to a fixed target as possible. We have 2
Bocce courts located in the court yard outside Building 6.
To reserve a
court there is Bocce
Ball Book with a sign up
sheet at the desk in the
Lobby. The book also
has a list of players.
Contact Abbie or
Joanne in Community
Life if you have
questions.
The New Year offers
opportunities to be engaged
socially, physically and share
your talents and interests with
friends and neighbors in
our community. We have so
many offerings to choose from.
Here is a sampling of selections
available: Chair Yoga, Numerous
Exercise Classes, Great
Decisions, a nationally
recognized discussion group,
and Watermark University
offerings, which encourage
lifelong learning and provide us
chances for full self expression. The New Year is the best time to
try something new and different!
LIVING WELL
In the United States, flu viruses are most
common during fall and winter months.
The Center for Disease Control
recommends three steps to protect
yourself from the flu. First, make the
time to get a flu vaccine. Secondly, take
everyday actions to prevent the spread
of germs including proper hand washing
with soap and water, covering your
mouth and nose with a tissue when you
cough or sneeze, avoiding close contact
with others who may be sick, and
limiting your time around others when
you feel ill. Physicians also remind us
that we should avoid touching our face
because germs spread when we touch
our eyes, nose and mouth. Lastly, we
should be vigilant about disinfecting
objects and surfaces that may be
contaminated with germs.
Flu symptoms include fever, cough, sore
throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches,
headache, chills and fatigue. Some
people may also have vomiting and
diarrhea. People may be infected with
the flu and have respiratory symptoms
without a fever.
Take preventive measures during your
day-to-day activities. Wash your hands
often, avoid touching your eyes, nose
and mouth, drink plenty of fluids and eat
healthy foods. All of these habits will
help to bolster your immune system and
make you less prone to the virus.
