Join fellow members of the California Art league as we meet at the gorgeous Getty Villa on Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu on a special date - Saturday December 16th - to view the Last Days of Pompeii exhibition. The Getty Website best describes the Last Days of Pompeii as a show filled with a head-spinning variety of art, from Classical, ancient to modern:

"The eruption of Mount Vesuvius in A.D. 79 destroyed yet paradoxically preserved the city of Pompeii and neighboring towns. Seemingly frozen in time, they are often considered the places where we can best access the daily lives of ancient Romans. While providingwindows to the past, since their rediscovery in the early 1700s, the Vesuvian cities have also served as mirrors of the shifting present. For three centuries they have remained a constant obsession, inspiring foremost artists—from Piranesi, Fragonard, Ingres, and Alma-Tadema to Duchamp, Dalí, Rothko, and Warhol—to examine contemporary concerns, such as sexual identity, psychoanalysis, the nuclear threat, collective memory, and the nature of art."

The exhibition draws its name from Edward Bulwer-Lytton's 1834 novel The Last Days of Pompeii, a melodrama of Pompeian life set immediately before the eruption of Vesuvius. One of the most popular literary works of the 19th century, the novel transformed modern perceptions of Pompeii and inspired numerous works of art, several of which are on view in the exhibition."

December is the season of giving and a traditional time for giving gifts to loved ones. When I was a child, I was always excited about the thoughts of gifts under the Christmas tree. Now that I am an adult I like to think about what special gift I can find for my family members. This season brings my thoughts to giving and how can I give in a special way, and how that gift can last throughout the year. Here are three special ways.

Steve Maraboli, in "Life, the Truth, and Being Free" says:

"Give yourself entirely to those around you. Be generous with your blessings. A kind gesture can reach a wound that only compassion can heal."

Do you know another artist who is tight on funds and can’t afford the California Art League dues? Wouldn’t it be a kind and generous gift to pay for their membership so that they can be a member and participate in all the year round art shows and activities? I think it would even be fun to do it as a “Secret Santa” and not tell them whom it came from. If everyone in this club who can afford it, bought a “Secret Santa” membership for someone who can’t afford it, we would really be reaching out to the community and showing that we are an organization who thinks of others in a personal way.

The second idea is to make an effort to be happy. That’s right, just be happy and positive. Keep your negative thoughts and observations to yourself. Gretchen Rubin, from The Happiness Project says, "The belief that unhappiness is selfless ismisguided. It’s more selfless to act happy. It takes energy, generosity and discipline to be unfailingly lighthearted. The happy person becomes a cushion for others."

The third idea for giving is to be of service. Is there a place where you can use your talents for the service of others? Kahil Gibran wrote, "I slept and I dreamed that life is all joy. I woke and I saw that life is all service. I served and I saw that service is all joy." Find a place where you can serve in 2013 and better your life and your community. Perhaps it could even be within CAL and volunteering to help our organization move forward.

I leave you with one last quote to think about by Mary Anne Radmacher:

"As we work to create light for others,we naturally light our own way."

Please see the Member News section of the newsletter for information on Marjorie's latest book! Congratulations Marjorie!!

For those of us who become artists the drive to express ourselves is especially strong. We also have a natural desire to manipulate materials for creating artworks. Here’s an assortment of techniques to try, and tips for managing materials.

Do a Little ArtTiny stretched canvases, 4” x 5” or less can make strong little statements. There’s something magical about miniatures. You can incorporate the canvases into larger artworks or create a mini series. Find them in craft stores along with diminutive display easels. Add paint smudges to the easels for a “little” authenticity.

Giant Palette KnivesGiant spatulas intended for frosting cakes are shaped like palette knives. They’re cheaper than art knives and are great for sweeping paint onto large surfaces.

Instant AirbrushTry kids’ spray markers (Sprayza or Blo Pens) over watercolors or acrylics for instant airbrush effects. Coat sprayed color with acrylic medium to make the colors permanent and give them a painterly look.

A Yard of HelpMahl sticks support your arm and steady your hand for painting details and more. A flat wood yardstick is inexpensive and works beautifully because it stays in place.

Reviving Dried AcrylicsHere’s the secret sauce for reviving gummy, almost-dry (not totally dry) acrylic paints: one partammonia to 20 parts distilled water. Mix with a stirrer and store in a jug; keep a small batch handy in a plastic squeeze bottle. Add a drop or two directly into the tube or jar to liquefy the paint.

It’s advantageous to try new materials on occasion to see what resonates with your personal expression.

Kids’ Lap Tray For ArtistsInexpensive plastic lap trays from

Michaels or Crate & Barrel are handy on a table near your easel. They elevate your

palette, and hold brushes, books, and art materials, too.

VViiccttoorriiaann MMuusseess –– PPaarrtt IIBook Report: Effieby Norm Beal

No self-respecting connoisseur of art history should be taken aback by the often questionable social-romantic adventures occurring in the aesthetic and creative circles of 19th Century France. They were, after all, French – well, mainly French. What has received less attention are the peccadillos within the contemporary art scene in Victorian England.

There, while 'proper society' was hardly bereft of scandalous goings on, the English level of repression controlling any romantic relation or any discussion of (horrors!) sex, was considerably higher. Consequently, any infringement of the established norms might result not only in a cover up, but would contribute to a broader dimension of hypocrisy.

Among the more convoluted soap operas within this scene was the liaison between John Ruskin, Effie Gray and John Everett Millas. John Ruskin was, of course, the famous art critic and promoter of the Preraphailite. Effie Gray became his wife at the age of 19 in 1848, a marriage which lasted six years, but was never consummated.

Nevertheless, Effie – smart, articulate, a beauty by any standards and no shrinking violet, found herself plopped into the swirl of Victorian high society. In fact, she soon became a center of attraction wherever she appeared. She met the Queen, dined with Gladstone and Wellington, was constantly approached by panting swains and inspired at least one duel. In 1851 Ruskin, during the course of supporting the Preraphailites, became particularly friendly with the upcoming Millais, already known for several works including his "Ophelia" of bathtub fame.

In 1853 Ruskin suggested that Millais join him and Effie on holiday, and that Effie pose for the artist. Big mistake! The upshot was that Effie effected a flight and eventual annulment, in April 1854. This was a feat virtually unheard of at the time. In 1855, Effie and Millais were married. All of this was accomplished with only minor defamation, which, in any case, was mainly directed toward Ruskin for being soporific, although the Queen refused to allow Effie at court again until 1896.

The entire story of this trio, rarely surpassed even by today's HBO, also provides a revealing andentertaining view of the prejudices and morals of this fascinating age. It is told for the first time by Suzanne Fagence Cooper's great biography, Effie, 2010, St. Martins Press, 276 pages.
