My Dear Friends in Christ,

The fall season is upon us. I am reminded of the famous poem Trees by Joyce Kilmer that begins, “I think that I shall never see a poem lovely as a tree. A tree that looks at God all day and lifts her leafy arms to pray.” After a wicked weather blast last month that destroyed many trees, causing much havoc to several parishioners’ lives and necessitating a significant amount of tree and landscaping costs for our parish, we are looking forward to a hopefully calm and mild winter. Last month was a time to say goodbye to seasoned parish-ioners and this month we welcome newbies. Consider some of the things we say when we part with one another: See you. See ya – see you later. Our Anglican Heritage St. Cyprian of Carthage

The early life of Thascius Caecilius Cyprianus is largely unknown except that information from his writings. The date of his birth is unknown but is believed to be about 200 in Carthage. He came from an eminent non-Christian fami-ly, apparently of some wealth. He was well educated in rhetoric. He came to Christianity after finding himself dis-gusted with the ostentatious wealth, corrupt justice, and a society of bloodthirstiness and cruelty. During his journey to Christianity, he was guided by his friend, the priest Cecilius. He found that through the experience of baptism he was liberated and cleansed from his old life and given a new birth, armed with the heavenly gift of the Holy Spirit. When he was baptized is unknown as are the dates he be-came a deacon or priest. Near the end of 248, after the death of Bp. Donatus of Carthage, he was chosen, by the voice of the people, bishop of Carthage with opposition from a small group elderly Carthaginian presbyters includ-ing Novatus who would cause him problems later. Before Cyprian was bishop a year the persecutions of Decius began, as Decius required all citizens to sacrifice to the state gods and be in receipt of a libellus, a certificate from a temple confirming the act. As the bishops of the church immediately became targets of the decree, Cyprian found a safe place from which he was able to maintain his charge of the church in the province of Africa through cor-respondence, relying on faithful workers such as his friend Tertullus. After the death of Bp. Fabian of Rome, the priests and dea-con who were overseeing the church in Rome criticized Cyprian from going into hiding. Cyprian, in return, replied

Fr. Farrell Graves The Priestly Encounter

“F**k!” he said, His intense voice seeking and rejecting a witness to his ex-istence, Announcing and defending his fragility. His unsettled eyes struck upon my collar, From which they sank, deflated. Solitary pain turned inward To release a soul-denying mortal mixture That fermented inside a hardened shell. Guilt, the slurry of soul mining, Coursed between us. Muscles, hardened against a hurtful world, Grew taut against an intangible target Stretched over a lifetime of pain And fully absented him. Separated by a syllable, Cast as a model of propriety, Of rules expunging humanity— An encounter without a meeting.

to them about his activities, sending as proof copies of the correspondence with the churches of Carthage, noting that his presence in Carthage would only pro-voke the Roman authorities and aggravate the perse-cutions. As the persecutions continued the issue that had aris-en in the church in Rome concerning treatment of the backsliders (lapsi) appeared in Carthage, raised by Novatus and his supporters. Cyprian, following the general approach of Rome, gave a more precise ap-proach that pastoral care would be given to the back-sliders while the persecutions continued, leaving the decision of receiving them back into the fellowship of the church to a synod after the persecutions ended. In 251, Cyprian called a local council that decreed that it was possible to receive the lapsed back into the church after a penance. In the meantime, the priest Novatus joined with a priest of Rome, Novatian, in a schism of the church by asserting that those who lapsed during the persecution could not be readmitted even if they repented their sin. In Carthage, Fortuna-tus, who opposed absolution, was elected by Cypri-an's opponents as bishop of Carthage. Further, No-vatian, aided by Novatus, convinced three Roman bishops to place Novatian on the cathedra of Rome while Bp. Cornelius still occupied it. Cyprian entered the battle with a series of encyclicals to the African bishops that was later produced as the book, On the Unity of the Church. Support for the extreme measures by those who opposed absolution were moderated by Bp. Cyprian's writings raising him in the eyes of the people and increased further by their witness of his self-denying devotion during a great plague and famine that descended on Africa.

In 256, a new persecution arose under Emperor Vale-rian in which the Roman bishops Stephen I and Six-tus II were martyred in Rome. After preparing his people for the extension of the persecution to Africa with his De exhortatione martyrii, Bp. Cyprian set himself as an example when he was brought before the Roman proconsul Aspasius Patermus on August 30, 257, by refusing to sacrifice to the pagan gods and firmly professed Christ.

Many of his writings have been preserved. His essay On the Unity of The Catholic Church stresses the im-portance of visible, concrete unity among Christians, and the role of the bishops in guaranteeing that unity. It has greatly influenced Christian thought, as have his essays and letters on Baptism and the Lord's Sup-per. He has been quoted both for and against the Ro-man Catholic claims for Papal authority. Exiled to Curubis, today's Korba Tunisia, Cyprian comforted, as best he could, those of his exiled flock and clergy. A year later, he was returned and kept

prisoner in his own villa as a more stringent imperial edict was issued that demanded execution of all Chris-tian clergy.

He was imprisoned on September 13, 258 at the order of the proconsul, Galerius Maximus. The following day he was questioned again and then sentenced to die by the sword, to which he answered "thanks be to God!" The execution came in an open place near the city be-fore a multitude that followed Cyprian on his last jour-ney. After removing his garments without assistance, he knelt down and prayed. After he blindfolded him-self, he was beheaded by the sword on September 14, 258. His life and ministry is honored throughout the Episcopal Church every year on September 15.

Adult Choir Planning for the New Musical Year

It is not too early to mark your calendars and remember that promise you made to yourself to be involved in the church choir. Beginning Thursday September 10th, the Senior Choir will begin rehearsals in the Upper Room of the Parish House at 7:00 p.m. Come meet our new organist. For anyone who would like to join, please contact Choir Director Dallas Garvin at 751-6559 for more information. Just think, what would Sunday services, Christmas, or Easter be like without any music? Did you know that the very first musical instrument that God created was your voice? Let us use this wonderful creation to sing praise and glory back to God.

Adult Education Program "Borderland" is a four-part television documentary, pro-duced and aired in April 2014, in which six Americans from varying backgrounds are confronted with the realities of undocumented migrant labor. The six participants split into three groups and go to Mexico and Central America in order to retrace the footsteps of three migrants who did not survive the journey north. They discover the circumstances which led the migrants they are tracing to risk their lives; they make their way north by riding atop a cargo train know as "La Bestia" or "The Beast"; they learn about the impact of Mexico's drug wars on immigrants; they traverse the desert in which some 2500 migrants had died the previ-ous year. Alex Seel, Sue Seel and Spencer Edelbaum's son (Caroline Church parishioners), was one of the six participants and will be present for question and answer. These presenta-tions are for adults and mature teens. We will consider two episodes per evening on 2 weekdays in October beginning at 6:30pm. Undocumented migrant labor is a compelling issue that all Christians face. Come view the documentary and discuss.

ECW Morning Branch We will be having a Rummage Sale on Friday and Saturday, October 23rd, & 24th.

Please do NOT drop off any items until that previous Monday, October 11th, in the Parish House. We welcome your clean, gently used clothing to share with those less fortunate. We also welcome your assis-tance with setting up and breaking down. If you can help, please speak with Barbara Jones at 751-8809. Thank you.

As usual we have many activities planned for the children during the year and I am pleased to say we have most of our teachers returning and a couple of new parishioners volunteering their time. We could use some more help team-teaching our children as well as volunteers to help with our nursery. Do pray about this. All parents of Children Pre-K through 12th Grade need to go to the classroom on this first day and pick up your children. Each teacher will go over some information with you about the coming year. The service starts promptly at 9:30 am. We are in need of volunteers to play the piano. If anyone is in-terested please call the parish office or let Jan Visconti know of your interest. Prayer Shawl Ministry

Our prayer shawl ministry continues to serve the peo-ple of our community. We have a devoted group of women who gather regularly on the third Saturday of each month at 8:30am in different people's homes.

Our group is ecumenical and expanding all the time. We represent many different churches and encourage anyone who is interested, to attend and bring a friend. You do not have to be experienced to come. We are willing to teach you!

We open with prayer, discuss patterns and colors, teach others, pray for others, and listen to a short medi-tation. During a time of silence we focus on God, our knitting, and the clicking of our needles.

We have given away over 125 shawls. The shawls and lap robes have been warmly and graciously received. We trust that the shawls we have created send a mes-sage of God's love and compassion to all who receive them.

Our next gathering is still to be determined. Watch the weekly bulletins for the start up date and time.

Parish Ministry Opportunities

Church School Teachers and Pianists Many of last year’s Sunday School teachers are returning this year to teach. For this we praise the Lord! However, there are a few spots where we could use another teacher to be part of a team or as a substitute. We also need a once a month pianist, adult or child, to accompany the Children’s Chapel program on Sunday mornings from 9:30 am to 10:00 a.m. If you can help please contact Jan Visconti or the parish office.

Children and Teen Singers

Our Youth Choir, aka Joyful Noise Choir is a Ministry. Through singing in a choir, a child or young teenager can serve as a leader in the most important gatherings of the congregation. Your child does not need to match pitches or sing beautifully in order to be a Chorister. In our Joy-ful Noise Choir of children and youth all will learn to sing well. They will learn to use a great gift—their sing-ing voices—and they will have fun and fellowship in the process. Their friends who are not members of the parish but are interested in singing are also welcome. Please encourage your child or young teen to contribute to the life of our church by singing as choristers – a small deed that is well within the reach of each child at Caro-line. If you would like to know more about the program, or to sign up your child or young teen, please contact our new Youth Choir director, Mrs. Janani Sridhar, [email protected] or the parish office.

We would like to remember in prayer, those who are serving in the Armed Forces.

Michael Cardamone, Melanie Gonzalez, Don Gonzalez, Andrew Gaebelein

May God protect them, bless them,

and bring them home soon.

Buildings & Grounds  Only two weeks have passed since the August edition of The Carillon was revised to include the storm, so little has changed. Things are moving along and by the time you read this, the floors in the MCS Building should be sparkling. Our tree service will have put in a second day cleaning up after the thunderstorm that passed through on August 4. There is much damage in the Rookery woods, where hanging limbs must be removed for safety reasons. The stair lifts mentioned in last month’s article should have been installed or at least scheduled. Likewise, the fire prevention improvements (which can not be sched-uled until the Town signs off on the plans) should be scheduled. Finally, the job refinishing of wood floors in the Sacristy and altar area has been awarded and should be accomplished by early September. So there will be some disruption with use of the facilities during this peri-od. Please bear with us as we prepare for the fall.

Caring for the Caregiver Support Group

How exciting that we will soon begin another “church year” together and with that a wonderful opportunity to take a moment and learn more about the Caregiver Sup-port Group, an active community outreach ministry at Caroline Church. Knowing the specific logistics of the ministry, i.e. meet-ings are non-disease specific, free, open to the communi-ty, facilitated by a geriatric social worker, held on the second and fourth Saturday of the month from 9:30-11:00 upstairs in the Parish House are important, but it is more important to be aware of those you intereact with in your daily lives and to be sensitive to the appearance of care-giver related stresses in their lives. It is also more im-portant to request several colored fliers that you can post in locations that you frequent and potentially reach a neighbor whose life you could enrich by so doing. Community awareness of the Caregiver Support Group Ministry is vital to its existence. Every parishioner of Caroline Church can and should participate in helping to achieve and maintain an ever growing presence of the group as a stable community resource within the Three Village and surrounding communities. Please note that there is always a need for volunteers for both behind-the-scenes work as well as those interested in helping to facilitate the group. Contact Virginia Cash, Caregiver Support Group Facilitator, at 428-0902 or [email protected] to request fliers or for further in-formation. Meetings in September will be held on Saturday, Septem-ber 12th and 26th.

CYC PLEASE NOTE regular CYC meet-ings do not resume until September 20! Come one come all (well, 6th-12th graders that is!) to the Cave (basement of MCS building) for our first meeting of the school year, Sun-

day September 20th from 4:00pm-6:00pm! Please wear "getting messy" duds, as we will be playing some ooey gooey games! Also, please bring a snack or bottle of soda to share so we can feast while sharing our summer tales. See you then! Any questions or information contact Lindsay Porter at:

Daughters of the King

We now have a Chapter of the Daughters of the King at Caroline Church. Our name is St. Teresa of Avila Chap-ter. Daughters of the King are dedicated to a service of prayer and service. We had a time of study and discern-ment before we felt called to start a chapter here at Caro-line Church. As a service to our Caroline Church families we will be praying for your prayer requests. How? There will be blue prayer cards in the pew racks for you to use either requesting prayer or giving thanks. We will have a box in the vestibule for you to drop your cards into. We will keep you in our daily prayers for a month (unless you request longer). As always all prayer requests are kept confidential. Thank you for letting us provide this service to you.

Anyone for Volleyball?? We are having another volleyball match on the Village Green on September 26 with a rain date of the 27th. A team of at least 10 people will be formed. There will also be a kids' game for the under 13 crowd. And we will be playing against other congregations in the area. Caroline Church is on board for a rematch and I hope you all can join in and see just how much fun this is and how rewarding to have fellowship with other congregations! We have worked it in the past as a $20 donation to play and a $10 donation to watch and cheer. We bring drinks and snacks and baked goods to sell at the Concession stand. The winners take a little higher percentage of the proceeds and each Church chooses for themselves where their share of the "prize" will go.

If you have a competitive spirit and are interested in playing,

please contact Lindsay Porter at: [email protected]

Brotherhood of Saint Andrew Thank you all for attending our mid-summer BBQ. We had a great crowd come out for some burgers and dogs with all the trimmings. It was also a wonderful support to our youth who presented their thoughts and experiences on the DC and Cuba mis-sion trips. Good job CYC. Special thanks to our kitchen help, who as usual car-ried the work load. Thank You, again. Our first Brotherhood meeting is scheduled for Sep-tember 12th. We start at 8:00am with our Eucharist. Hope to see you all there. Blessings Br. Mark

Joyful Noise Choir! Come join us in our Joyful Noise Choir! If your child is between 2nd-9th grade and likes to sing and make music, we would love to invite them to use their voices for the Lord! The Joyful Noise Choir is a great way for children to be involved in serving at the church, and it is also lots of fun! We do not hold auditions nor do we require prior musical experience. We invite everyone, so please consider joining us. The more the merrier! Regular rehearsals are Sundays 11-11:45am after the 9:30am service. We sing in church on the first and third Sundays at the 9:30am service, between the second reading and the gospel. We will start with a rehearsal on Sunday, September 27th at 11:00am. Our first Sunday to sing will be October 4th at the 9:30am Service.

If you have any questions, please contact me at: [email protected] Thank you and I look forward to seeing you soon.

Warmly, Janani

Director

Blessing of the Animals

To all Caroline Church pets, be sure you communi-cate to your caring owners that you want to come to Caroline Church for your yearly blessing. You know how much they enjoy worshipping God in a faith af-firming community, so don’t be shy about asking the Lord to bless you as an important part of the family. The Blessing of the Animals will take place on Satur-day, October 3rd at 10:00 a.m. at the Carriage Shed in the Church Parking lot. This unique service in cele-bration of St. Francis of Assisi’s love for all of God’s creation has always been a special time for all mem-bers of our parish family, even those that wag their tales or chirp. We will also take an informal vote on the most exotic pet presented for a blessing.

Service Saturdays at Camp DeWolfe

Another season of summer camp has just come to a close out at Camp DeWolfe! To ensure that the camp is spruced up and ready for programs throughout the coming program year, friends of the camp throughout the diocese are invited to help with service projects during a series of Saturdays in the fall. Each day provides an opportunity to participate in the stewardship of the camp grounds, engage in communi-ty, and enjoy a day out east in the natural setting on the Long Island Sound!

Montessori School Comes to Caroline Church

Beginning this month, Caroline Church will be undertaking a new community outreach. We will be hosting a Montes-sori Pre-School for 3-5 year olds. The classes will begin mid-September and be held Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. in the main room of the MCS building. Before and after school care may also be offered. The Montessori Method of teaching will be practiced as closely as possible, helping children progress through stages of mental, physical, and spiritual growth at different rates. The environment is structured so that children have maximum freedom to gravitate toward material that enhances their current state of development. Children are encouraged to choose their own activities with teacher’s support and guidance. This atmosphere fosters the growth of inner discipline and independence that leads to a healthy self-image. By nurturing children as individuals, the school seeks to develop confidence, intellectual growth, creativity and a joy of learning. Admission is open to all children and is non-sectarian, and non-denominational. However, the school will offer a Cat-echesis of the Good Shepherd spiritual development tract for interested parents to have their children participate. Although we realize that the use of our MCS building by the School will impact some group meetings, we are blessed with several buildings here at Caroline Church that will allow us to continue to accommodate them. If you would like further information about the new school and program either for your children or someone you know, please contact the Director of the Montessori School, Mrs. Ditas McHugh. Her e-mail address is [email protected] or call her cell at 631-599-4080.
